What is <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>>?<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>>® <strong>tape</strong> is a new, patented <strong>high</strong>-perform<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce <strong>tape</strong> developed <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d made by<br />

Teijin. It c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be used in a wide variety of products for various market segments <<strong>strong</strong>>–</<strong>strong</strong>><br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ywhere, in fact, where there is a need for superior strength, safety, light weight or<br />

durability.<br />

For example, <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is used worldwide in applications <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d markets r<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ging from<br />

ballistic protection (armoring <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d bulletproof vests), ropes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d cables to cargo containers,<br />

sails <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d even loudspeakers. The <strong>tape</strong> shape of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> allows for easy processing <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d<br />

seamless integration into the application of the customer.<br />

Super-<strong>strong</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>–</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d more<br />

Weight-for-weight, <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is 11 times <strong>strong</strong>er th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> steel. But <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> offers more<br />

th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> incredible strength. It is made of a special type of UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular<br />

Weight Polyethylene), making it the <strong>strong</strong>est UHMWPE <strong>tape</strong> available in the world. It<br />

also has a <strong>high</strong>er <strong>modulus</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d better UV resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce, creep properties <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d thermal-aging<br />

perform<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> other UHMWPE fibers.<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is the most sustainable UHMWPE product available, being made in <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>><br />

environmentally friendly, solvent-free process. As a result, the <strong>tape</strong> contains no additional<br />

processing aids or solvent residue. And the thermoplastic nature of UHMWPE me<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>s that<br />

it c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> also be easily recycled.<br />

Versatile<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be made in <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>y width, depending on customers’ needs. In a special<br />

patented process, we also use <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> to make a cross-plied uni-directional-laid<br />

sheet (UD). The result is a unique UD/cross-ply that c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be consolidated to form plates of<br />

different shapes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d thicknesses. These c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be used for ballistic protection applications,<br />

for example.<br />

How is <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> produced?<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is made in a straightforward <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d sustainable process, as is described<br />

below.<br />

PE powder<br />

Compacting,<br />

4

Step 1<br />

A qu<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>tity of UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene)<br />

powder is compacted into a sheet.<br />

Step 2<br />

This sheet is then rolled <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d stretched until it reaches the right thickness<br />

(between 50 <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d 60 µm). By this process, the long polymer chains of the<br />

UHMWPE are aligned, giving <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> its <strong>high</strong> mech<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ical properties.<br />

The result is the <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> TA23 (133mm).<br />

Step 3<br />

To make the <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> UD brick laminate, <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong>s are laid next to<br />

each other in a typical brick-laying pattern.<br />

Another option is to slit the <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> to create smaller <strong>tape</strong>s.<br />

Step 4<br />

The UD brick laminate is cross-plied to create <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> cross-ply XF23.<br />

What c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> be used for?<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is used worldwide in m<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>y different applications <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d markets, including<br />

ballistic protection, ropes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d cables, sails, cargo containers <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d loudspeakers. With<br />

unrivaled expertise <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d experience, we continuously work on further innovations, often<br />

in cooperation <strong>with</strong> customers <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d partners through our worldwide sales <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d marketing<br />

org<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ization. Below, we give <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> impression of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>>’s actual <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d potential uses.<br />

Ropes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d cables<br />

With its unique weight-for-weight strength <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d areal weight (0.99g/cm²), <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is a popular<br />

choice for m<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ufacturers of ropes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d cables. The neutral buoy<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>cy of ropes, slings <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d cables<br />

produced <strong>with</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> makes them ideal for a wide r<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ge of offshore working <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d towing<br />

applications. The good abrasion resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce makes it ideal for use in forestry, for inst<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce. What<br />

is more, although <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is flexible, its inherent stiffness me<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>s it offers <strong>high</strong> responsiveness<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d direct contact between payload <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d operator. Finally, the low weight of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>>-based<br />

products reduces the ch<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce of injuries, <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d <strong>with</strong> their low coefficient of friction, <strong>high</strong> corrosion<br />

resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d <strong>high</strong> UV resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce, they resist failure due to degradation <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d abrasion.<br />

Robotics<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> is ideal for use in robotics, where space is limited, forces need to be conveyed,<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d the winding <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d unwinding of yarns may lead to problems. Th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ks to its unique<br />

properties, <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> proved to be ideal for use in the Darwing®, a dynamic arm support<br />

for people <strong>with</strong> severely limited arm function. <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> is specifically used to support the<br />

Darwing’s revolutionary double-bal<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce mech<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ism. The Darwing was developed by Focal<br />

Meditech, in close cooperation <strong>with</strong> our Teijin <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> team, <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d was presented at RehaCare<br />

International 2011.<br />

Ballistic protection<br />

Protective uni-directionals (UDs) <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d composites made from <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d used in insert<br />

plates, protective p<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>els <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d helmets all have a very <strong>high</strong> energy absorption capability, giving<br />

them a remarkably <strong>high</strong> stopping power for bullets <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d fragments. Due to their flat form,<br />

<strong>tape</strong>s require the use of less matrix material th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> normal, round fibers. As a result, more active<br />

material c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be used in the applications for the same weight, providing better protection.<br />

8

Loudspeakers<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> has excellent damping properties, so in combination <strong>with</strong> its <strong>high</strong> <strong>modulus</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d low<br />

density, it is ideal for use in loudspeakers. Speakers of a specific size c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be designed to reach<br />

<strong>high</strong>er frequencies <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d deliver more output for the same input power.<br />

Cargo containers<br />

The excellent impact resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> in ballistic applications, combined <strong>with</strong> its<br />

stiffness, c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> easily be tr<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>slated into other fields. For inst<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce, cargo containers need to be as<br />

light, <strong>strong</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d as impact resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>t as possible, to protect cargoes <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d save fuel. A solution<br />

using <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>y other material would require more material <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d involve extra weight.<br />

Sails<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> offers very <strong>high</strong> <strong>modulus</strong>, good UV resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d good flex fatigue. This<br />

makes it very suitable for use in sails. Sails made of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> keep their shape even under<br />

severe forces, they are not damaged by <<strong>strong</strong>>ultra</<strong>strong</strong>>-violet light, <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d they c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be endlessly folded <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d<br />

unfolded. Unlike the round shape of ordinary fibers, the flat form of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> lends itself<br />

naturally to the flat surface of sails. Fibers require the use of more resin, <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d carbon fibers tend<br />

to be too brittle to be used for sails, which need to remain flexible for as long as possible.<br />

Adhesive <strong>tape</strong><br />

The excellent properties of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be used in combination <strong>with</strong> a pressuresensitive<br />

adhesive to produce <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> adhesive <strong>tape</strong>. This <strong>tape</strong> c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> be stuck onto<br />

a virtually unlimited r<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ge of surfaces to give those surfaces better resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce to wear,<br />

additional strength or greater resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce to impact. The flat shape of <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> me<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>s applying<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> adhesive layer is quite simple, <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d there is no need to individually bond fibers.<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>–</<strong>strong</strong>> a unique combination of properties<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> offers users a unique combination of properties. It is <strong>strong</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>–</<strong>strong</strong>> 11 times<br />

<strong>strong</strong>er th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> steel, weight for weight. It is remarkably light, durable, weathers well,<br />

performs well under temperature ch<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ges <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d is made in <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> environmentally friendly<br />

way <<strong>strong</strong>>–</<strong>strong</strong>> all of which me<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>s it is a sustainable solution.<br />

Very <strong>high</strong> <strong>modulus</strong><br />

Tensile <strong>modulus</strong> (elastic <strong>modulus</strong>) is a measure of the stiffness of <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> elastic isotropic material,<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d is used to characterize a material’s rigidity. <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> has a very <strong>high</strong> <strong>modulus</strong> (i.e., it is<br />

very rigid), especially for a material that has such low density. <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> also has a <strong>high</strong>er<br />

<strong>modulus</strong> th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> other UHMWPE materials. (See Fig. 1.)<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> has a good chemical resist<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce by its nature against a wide variety of chemicals.<br />

Prolonged exposure even at temperatures of 70°C does no harm to the properties of<br />

<<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>>. The chemicals that <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> c<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> resist include 10% Sodium Hydroxide, 10%<br />

Superior weathering<br />

Fibers are weakened by exposure to <<strong>strong</strong>>ultra</<strong>strong</strong>>-violet light (sunlight), a fact that needs to be taken into<br />

account in the initial design. In outdoor tests (ISO 877), under direct weathering at <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>gle of<br />

5° facing south <strong>with</strong>out protection, <<strong>strong</strong>>Endumax</<strong>strong</strong>> <strong>tape</strong> not only showed less perform<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce loss th<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>><br />

The strength of UHMWPE materials is affected by temperature. As the graph in Fig. 3<br />

shows, their tensile <strong>modulus</strong> <<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>d the breaking tenacity both fall off considerably at <strong>high</strong>er<br />

temperatures. However, unlike other <strong>high</strong>-perform<<strong>strong</strong>>an</<strong>strong</strong>>ce materials, UHMWPE materials do not<br />
