Timmy Foundation
Building Healthy Futures
2006 Annual Report
Ten years of service; inspiring and empowering.
Letter from Dr. Chuck Dietzen
The Timmy Foundation has reached an important milestone this year. Timmy is 10 years old! Recently, when the
auditors, who review our financial statement, sat down with our Finance Committee, they made some rather profound
statements. One was “...nobody looks this good.” Another was “...nobody does it better.” They could not
help but be impressed that so much had been accomplished by such a small foundation in its youth and with minimal
overhead. This would have been impossible without the time, treasures, and talents of our supporters.
This annual report only details the treasures which we have shared. It cannot quantify the lives changed or the hope
restored. It does not enumerate the many children who have received medical attention, educational assistance,
and life-saving surgeries because of your support. And we would not be able to do all of these great things in a
world in need of healing without the time and talents of our volunteers. When I was young I used to pray that God
would give me “the strength to help but the weakness to feel the pain.” I was asking for vulnerability and an ability
to feel compassion for others. Our volunteers radiate these qualities and make our work possible.
In his book, Our Greatest Gift, Henri Nouwen wrote, “Devoid of care, our society makes us believe that we are what
we have, what we do, or what people think about us.” We live in a culture of “go-getters.” And yet, this Foundation
is celebrating its 10th birthday because our volunteers and donors are “go-givers.” They are people who believe
that they do have the ability to change the world. They are people who understand that we are related to one
another. It is precisely this idea that explains why we are here, to make a difference, to love others and to be involved
in a mutual healing process. Ultimately, we will continue to experience that while serving as “go-givers” we
get a lot in return.
With the teenage years ahead, we have experienced growing pains. Yet, we look forward to your continued support,
nurturing, and guidance as we step out in vulnerability and commitment to aid as many children as we can.
To all our volunteers and supporters: Thank you once again for all that you have done for this Foundation. Thank
you for helping us grow and making us strong. Thank you on behalf of the children whose lives have been made
better because of your compassion, generosity, and service.
May God bless you for your “go-giver” spirit,
Charles Dietzen
Our Vision
A world in which all children have access to quality healthcare and education.
We believe that quality healthcare not only includes acute treatment but tending to the individual as a whole. Providing
resources such as proper nutrition, education, and child care are important components for creating a healthy
global community.
Our Mission
Building healthy futures worldwide, one child at a time. We accomplish this by strengthening community-based
health and education initiatives and by empowering young people to share their energy and compassion.
Programs Update
Medical Brigades
This year, the Timmy Foundation made huge strides in terms of becoming a
far more robust humanitarian effort. In the past the Foundation sent 60% of
its medical brigades all in the same month- March. This year we made a concerted
effort to streamline our brigades. Our brigades will be spread out
throughout the course of the year, allowing us to visit underserved communities
several times per year and to drastically reduce parasites with consistency.
The Foundation has committed to sending medical brigades to the marginalized
communities of southern Quito, Ecuador in October, January, March,
May, and July. This rotation will provide more consistency and far greater
continuity of care. It also marks a significant
shift in Timmy values from, when it might be convenient for the volunteer
to travel, to when the underserved could best use our services. We hope to
replicate this model in two existing partner organizations, Sousa, Dominican
Republic in January, March, and May; and finally, Quetzaltenango,
Guatemala in March and May.
The Foundation also made a huge step by adopting a neighborhood in
Southern Quito. The neighborhood, La Cocha, consists of roughly 150 families.
It has little access to infrastructure and struggles as it is geographically
removed from Quito. Due to the ongoing success of the La Cocha pilot project,
it was decided that the Foundation would expand its efforts to two other
communities around Southern Quito.
College Outreach
The Timmy Foundation has ten College Chapters nationwide. For the 2006- 2007 academic year these chapters
led responsible campaigns to advocate, fundraise, and serve our international partner organizations. Among
their many accomplishments, these chapters:
● Raised $21,000 for La Fundación Tierra Nueva of Ecuador (University of Colorado and Davidson Collage)
● Raised over $3,000 for Shoulder to Shoulder Ecuador (University of Kentucky)
● Purchased four portable hemoglobin photometers kits for Holy Family Clinic of Jamaica (Hanover College)
● Held a health fair to raise awareness for global health inequity (Tufts University)
High School Outreach
For the past four years, the Timmy Foundation led a trip to Quito, Ecuador for
high school students of the greater Indianapolis area.
In June 2007, students painted the community center and primary school of La
Cocha. This was the Foundation’s fifth follow up visit to the neighborhood since
the relationship began in July 2006.
3 Ten years of service; inspiring and empowering.
Timmy also had these additional successes:
Partner Progress
Programs Update continued
● 11 medical brigades to five countries, including: Ecuador, Dominican Republic,
Guatemala, Honduras, and Jamaica.
● First epidemiological study was conducted in the neighborhood of New
Jerusalem in Southern Quito. All data was entered into iSalus records, an electronic
medical records system.
● Service in Jamaica was revamped to be more medically focused.
● Outreach refocused from serving American youth directly to empowering our
youth to meet the needs of the underserved.
Bebor Model Nursery and Primary School, Bodo City, Nigeria- During Timmy’s 2006-
2007 fiscal year, we were able to deliver $15,900 in three separate rounds of funding to the
Bebor Model Nursery/Primary School project in Bane and Bodo City, Rivers State, Nigeria.
This compares to $13,000 delivered in the 2005-2006 fiscal year. Scott Pegg led a four person
Timmy delegation to the Niger Delta in August 2006 to visit the schools. During this trip,
we implemented Timmy Foundation projects to put a rust-proof roof on the final classroom
building in Bane and to set up a sewing machine workshop for the Tijen Pegg Mothers’ Association
in Bodo City. We are now nearing completion on the final classroom buildings in both
villages and hope to focus our near-term future efforts on improved sanitation through the
provision of latrines and boreholes for drinking water.
Holy Family Clinic, Bull Savannah, Jamaica- According to a study published in June 2004
by National HIV/AIDS Program of Jamaica, 5,062 Jamaicans have died from HIV/AIDS with
an estimated 25,000 more people may be currently living with the disease. The Timmy Foundation
was awarded a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the St. Norbert Abbey Augustine
Stewardship Fund Trust for testing and counseling outreach. Testing, counseling, and education
initiatives have begun.
Poder Joven, Medellin, Colombia- Poden Joven continues to provide food, health services,
educational activities and family support programs to 135 children in two of the most impoverished
neighborhoods in Medellin, Colombia. The recent creation of Casa Maren, a second
outreach center located in the neighborhood of Manrique, will assist 70 children between the
ages of 3 and 12, and has allowed the number of children receiving assistance from Poder
Joven to double since 2006. Additionally, donations from Timmy supporters have made it
possible for Poder Joven to purchase a truck for the recycling center. The recycling center provides
job opportunities, sources of funding, and environmental awareness. The additional
flexibility in the collection of material provided by this vehicle helped to increase the profitability
of the center, boosting the cash transfers to the social programs by 36%.
