Glenn Manton Presentation
The students in our 40 plus club were privileged
to listen to ex Carlton premiership player and
educator Glenn Manton last Monday afternoon.
As a motivational speaker he spoke about
healthy relationships as he has an amazing
ability to capture, engage, humour and inspire
the students to do their best in all walks of life.
The discussion with the students was
refreshingly honest and all students would have
left with some key messages that will help them
not only in VCE but life in general.
The reception area was buzzing again
at 1pm as parents came in to pick up
their children who clearly wanted to
share how they felt they performed .
Results of the exam will be available
Uniform
One of the aspects that we really
enjoy about working at a school is the
support and sense of belonging that
comes from being a part of a community.
People are not biologically
designed to be alone, we need each
other to survive and thrive. Whilst
individuals have achieved wonderful
things, when they join forces with
others, the results can be extremely
powerful.
The community of Rowville Secondary
College includes students, parents and
staff and when we support and help
each other every individual within our
community benefits.
It is with this in mind that we are
commencing a blitz on student
uniform. The colder weather has
brought with it the appearance of lots
of extra clothing that is not a part of
our school uniform, such as beanies
and hoodies and lots of incorrect footwear.
The wearing of College uniform by all
students is compulsory in response to
the strong and clear preference of
parents and the community for such a
policy.
The compulsory nature of the uniform
has been agreed to in order to:
•Create a strong sense of College
identity within the College and in the
community.
•Create equal opportunity for all
students and to prevent social or class
distinctions.
•Maintain appropriate health and
safety standards.
•Maintain financial equality for
parents.
In the event that a student is unable
to be correctly attired in school
uniform the following procedures
must be followed:
1. An explanatory note written and
signed by parents/guardians must be
provided in order to validate a
request for a short term uniform
pass. The note must be dated and
specify the item of uniform for which
the pass is being sought, the reasons
why, and the period of time for which
the pass is sought – this should be for
a short time only. A medical
certificate must be provided for
students who need to have a pass for
an extended period of time for
medical reasons.
2. All students (Years 7-12) who
require a short term uniform pass
should obtain such a pass from their
head of school or team leader prior to
Period One.
3. Students who are out of uniform
without a short term uniform pass
will be issued with a College
after-school detention. Parents will be
given at least 24 hours notice if their
child is required to attend a
detention.
The Rowville Times
4. The Junior/Senior School Manager
or Assistant Principals may contact
parents/guardians if they are of the
belief that the reason for the student
being out of uniform is inappropriate
or unreasonable. In such
circumstances, the student may be
sent home for the offending item to
be rectified or the parent/guardian
may be requested to bring the
required item of uniform to school so
that the student can be correctly attired.
5. In all cases where a student cannot
Friday, May 25, 2012
Assistant Principals’ Report
be correctly attired in school uniform,
the nearest approximation of the
missing item should be worn.
6. Students who are frequently out of
uniform (approved or unapproved)
will have escalating consequences.
Parents may also be contacted to
discuss the issue.
We are asking for parental support
with our uniform blitz so that we are
sending a strong, clear and consistent
message to students. Could you
please ensure that your child leaves
and returns home in full school
uniform, check their bag for additional
clothing and ensure their shoes are
appropriate.
If students are cold there are optional
items that are permitted for extra
warmth such as plain white skivvies
and navy blue scarves. Please check
the student planner for a complete
list of acceptable uniform items.
Year Nine Flame Tests
Have you ever wondered which
colours elements burn to? Well on
Monday the 21st of May, the year 9
Maths and Science class tested just
this. All you had to do was set up a
Bunsen burner onto blue flame and
use the tongs to grab the icy pole stick
(which was saturated in different
elements) and put it into the flame to
see what colour is would produce.
Once put in the flame, these were our
results:
Barium Chloride -turned a bright
yellow
Sodium Chloride - turned a fierce
orange
Copper Chloride - turned emerald
green
Potassium Chloride - turned violet
Strontium Chloride - turned fire
engine red
Deionised Water - only went orange
at the tip with a slight pink colour
underneath
The aim of this experiment was to see
the colours emitted once the
elements were put under the heat of
a flame and we observed this
perfectly.

What is your favourite dance?
“I like the poppy dance
there’s this massive skirt and we
get to hide under it, so it is like a
massive poppy. So you can act all
feminine and stuff rather than
being a big grizzly monster, so
that’s why I like it.”
How do you think the production
“I think it’s going to be awesome,
Students in Year 11 Business
Management classes have the
opportunity to simulate the planning,
running and management of a small
business by involving the whole
school community and beyond.
Once again in 2012, given that the
weather wasn’t too kind, all students
managed to run a successful business
with a percentage of their profits
being donated to nominated charities.
Personally, I would like to thank all
VCAL Trees Adventure
On Monday 30 th April the Year 12
VCAL class went to a high ropes
course in Belgrave called Trees
Adventure. On the day we completed
3 different ropes courses, green (easy)
red (medium) and black (hard).
I personally did all 3 courses and the
hardest course was by far the black
course, it took roughly 45 mins to
complete and was stressful on the
upper body and on the hands. Some
of the obstacles on this course took
about 10 minutes to complete and
were really tough.
Everyone managed to complete the
red course, even the people that were
scared of heights and managed to
conquer their fears.
Over all, it was a fantastic day and big
thanks to Ms Nelson and Mr
us all.

Over the past two weeks our year 11
and 12 VCAL students have been
doing their bit for the disadvantaged
community of Melbourne by working
in the Fareshare Kitchens in South
Melbourne.
I am extremely proud of the work
ethic, respect and willingness to help
others demonstrated by our VCAL
students when working in the kitchens,
and although they were not
personally thanked by those receiving
the meals they cooked I know they
enjoyed the experience of
volunteering their time to help people
in need.
Fareshare is a non profit organisation
who works to rescue unwanted food
from supermarkets and restaurants in
order to turn it into nutritious home
cooked meals for people in need.
The VCAL students did an amazing job
when working in the kitchens and
have helped to cook and package over
700 meals to be distributed amongst
Melbourne's homeless and
disadvantaged citizens.

Year Ten Psychology
Ellie Gogis
Sarah De Cesare
In our year 10 Psychology class we are
using token economies, which enforce
positive behaviours in the class, with a
points table for each group; points
may be deducted for negative
responses during class time. These
may include; phones in class, not
raising hands and not arriving to class
on time. All the points we collect
either go to group or individual
rewards. Group and class rewards
reach as high as 500 points with the
pleasure of having Fish and Chips or
Pizza in class fo r free.
It’s a great challenge!
Daniel Donovan
In Psychology at the moment we are
studying the different ways that
people learn. We are currently using a
‘token economy’. Everyone has a
pretend credit card and we receive
points on the card if we do something
good and we have points taken away
if we do something wrong. If everyone
ends up with a certain amount of
points then we receive a reward.
In Psychology at the moment we are
learning about operant conditioning
and the theories of learning. We are
using a method in class called token
economies. We have to reinforce our
negative behaviours into positives.
We have been gaining ‘tokens’ or
points whenever we do something
good. Some behaviour which has
been reinforced are putting our hands
up and telling Mr. Sherlock he’s a
fantastic teacher! It’s been really fun
and interesting to learn about operant
conditioning.
Monica Chhour
At the moment in Psychology, we
have been learning about token
economies and the theories of
reinforcing behaviours. It reinforces
positive and negative behaviours.
Token economies are the use of
tokens as rewards that can be
‘cashed’ in for bigger rewards later.
Token economies are mostly used in
schools and prisons! In our class we
gain points for good manners, hands
up etc. and lose points for talking over
someone etc.
In year 10 Psychology at the moment
we are learning about token
economies. It is a method used to reinforce
certain behaviours, mostly
positive. If we are able to achieve a
certain amount of class points we are
able to cash in our points for a reward
such as “fish and chips”, we also have
individual rewards and group rewards
as we have been assigned a house
colour in groups of 5. We have learnt
a lot about operant conditioning
which is about altering certain
behaviour over time.
Timothy Sugumar
At the moment in year 10 Psychology
we are using token economy which
uses reinforcement to help learn
certain behaviours. It can be both
positive and negative depending on
what action has taken place.
Mr. Sherlock has been able to bring in
a fun environment into the topic by
putting us in teams and giving us
points as reinforcement. Everyone is
really enthusiastic about it and getting
involved! Psychology is really a great
subject!

Technology Teacher
My Year 7C Technology students are making Wall Hooks out of Wood and Metal.
Jacinda, Savannah and Zoe did a fantastic job in class, are all very dedicated to their work
and have fantastic personalities. Because of their continued hard efforts, they are going to
be given a Fish and Chip lunch at my expense!
Jacinda
“I had a lot of fun doing the
hooks. It is the best thing I have
ever made. I don’t think I could
have had any more fun than what I
did making it.”
Savannah
“I thought it was a great project to
make, because you can use the
hook to put your keys and jackets
on. Even though it is a long
process making it, you can use it
when you are done and I can say
that I MADE IT..!!”
Zoe
“I think that this project was fun
because we got to do just about
everything ourselves. We got to
use all sorts of tools and learnt
how to use them safely. I am glad
that we got to do this project and I
hope we get to do something like
this again.”

Senior Stage Band Director
On Friday 4 th May the Senior Stage
Band travelled to Mount Gambier
where they participated in the nation
wide jazz festival called ‘Generations
in Jazz’. ‘Generations in Jazz’ was
founded by James Morrison in 1989
and has grown to now involve over
2500 school-aged participants.
Generations in Jazz
The Stage Band performed extremely
well on the Saturday afternoon and
received great feedback on the
performance from the adjudicators.
As well as performing the band
watched other bands from our section
and also bands from the top division,
who were amazing as well as
inspiring!
The band also enjoyed inspiring and
motivating performances by James
Morrison, John Morrison, Gordon
Goodwin, Ross Irwin and many others.
This was Rowville’s first appearance at
the festival and we hope that in the
years to come that we can return and
compete in higher divisions. The
weekend was a great experience for
all involved and now it is full steam
ahead for the upcoming concerts and
competitions.

Business & Finance Teacher
Winners are Grinners
As part of the Year 10 Business and
Finance elective, students from both
the East and West Campuses took
part in the ASX Sharemarket Game.
They joined over 18,000 other
syndicates nationally to compete in a
hands-on, interactive and fun
experience.
Each syndicate starts with a
hypothetical $50,000 to invest. Over a
10 week period, they use that money
to buy and sell shares in ASX-listed
companies using real market prices
and in real sharemarket conditions.
Students are able to test out their
trading strategies in a risk-free
environment.
Naturally, given this environment,
some students can become quite
competitive – and that is what
happened amongst these four
students! Two syndicates battled it
out: Taylor Seymour & Rhys Clarkson
against Scott Brooks & Zac Clifford.
Scott and Zac lead the class for most
of the way until Week 8 when Taylor
and Rhys took over. From there –
Scott and Zac tried all sorts of strategies,
but could not catch Taylor and
Rhys!
Taylor and Rhys finished 246th
nationally (out of 18206 teams) – a
fantastic achievement – well done
boys.
Chris Rodier
International Students Coordinator
Our Japanese sister school will be
visiting in late July. Expressions of
interest are still be called for to host
students during the week of their
stay. Families who wish to host a boy
of junior school age are especially
invited to express interest. After each
visit we receive very positive reports
from those families who host, and
encourage other families to take up
the opportunity this year.
“The visit was a wonderful experience
and an invaluable learning adventure
for the whole family. We hope Nao
enjoyed it as much as we did, and
hope one day to meet her family. A
strong relationship beyond
friendship has been formed, and I am
sure it will be one that will continue
for a long time.”
This would also be a great way for
students who would be interested in
Scott and Zac finished 671th
nationally – another great accomplishment.
Considering that only 22.5% of players
finished in profit overall, it was a great
achievement.
taking part in our next visit to Japan in
2012 to prepare themselves.
Percentages: Just like statistics, can
say whatever you want them to say.
Percentages are all around us. In an
earlier edition the 10% rule was
mentioned as a very simple way to
work out percentages. We see
percentages a lot with retail as a common
thing. Sometimes you wonder
though, as is it better to save $5 off a
product, or save 25%. Obviously you
need more information, how much
does the product cost to start with?
$5 off a tub of ice cream is great, $5
off the price of a car is not great.
One of my first secondary school
projects was about percentages.
Paraphrasing it was “the cost of
groceries goes down by 10%, we
celebrate by eating 10% more.” It
reads like the money doesn’t change,
drop of 10%, rise of 10%, back to
where you were surely. However, the
trick behind it was that if you take a
number, say $100, 10% off leaves $90.
If you then add 10%, that equals 99,
so it is less than the original. It is not
the same as what we expect, if you
take away $10, then add it later, you
will be left with what you started
with, not a different number.
Now with sports salary caps
percentages are thrown around all the
time. At times these are linked to the
income the sport makes. In America
two of the bigger sports, NBA & NFL
had lockouts over many issues, but
especially money. One of the big issues
was how to split the revenue pie.
Players were making close to 60% of
income, but with financial pressures,
and good negotiating by the owners,
this is now at a 50/50 split. But then
there is the issue of what money is
put into the pie? Is it all revenue, or
just the profits? What is counted, and
Maths Corner
“Better late than never”
what isn’t counted is very important.
A massive deal is the television rights
where a huge chunk of the money is.
We also hear about percentages with
salary caps. Most of us don’t actually
know what the salary cap is, but we
often hear that teams are hard up
against it in the AFL. It doesn’t seem
to happen as much now, but back in
my school days, there was a lot of talk
about the minimum of the salary,
92.5%, at which St Kilda & Fitzroy
operated. I often think that is where
St Kilda breached the salary cap 20
years ago, paying too little money, not
oo much.
The AFL salary cap this year is
8,780,000. With their extra players
and concessions, and paying Ablett,
Karmichael, and Israel Folau, the new
expansion teams have a cap closer to
10 million. Just as a comparison, the
NFL salary cap is at 120 million, down
from a previous high of 123 million a
few years ago. The NBA is at 58
million, but averages out to more
money per player with the much
smaller size of a basketball team. The
MLS (soccer) comp has a salary cap of
under 3 million with exceptions, so it
shows the difference in popularity of
the sports.
There is no salary in major league
baseball or the high level of Soccer in
Europe. There is a powerful group
called the G14 which is made up of
the biggest clubs, Man U, Chelsea, AC
Milan, Barcelona, and so on. In 2005
there was an idea floated that clubs
could only spend up to 70% of the
club’s income. This never went
through and occasionally you hear
about clubs really struggling for
money, even the giant Spanish clubs.
In Scottish soccer there tends to be
only two teams at the top, both from
Glasgow, Rangers & Celtic. This year
Celtic held a slight advantage but
Rangers declared bankruptcy, and
took a 10 point penalty which handed
the title to Celtic. Will the Rangers still
be around for next year, and would
the 70% rule have worked for them?
A documentary was on in the past few
weeks about the setting up of the
Premier League in the late 80’s. One
of the big issues was that all English
soccer clubs in the FA, of which there
are somewhere near 100, all got an
equal share of the television rights,
which weren’t much at the time.
Rightly or wrongly, the Premier
League was established with the bulk
of the television money going to those
clubs, with little below.
Ten years ago I heard that a game on
Sky Sports for Premier League was
worth $1,000,000 to the clubs
involved. Similar set up for Division 1
was worth $50,000. Recently West
Ham United won promotion back the
Premier League, apparently worth
somewhere around $100 million
extra. They will get the same
percentage of a larger amount of
money. Happy times for them and the
other two clubs that got promoted.
Not so good for the relegated clubs.

It has been a busy start to term 2 with
sports on every week. The senior
boys AFL team have started the year
well by winning the district
competition quite convincingly and
progress to Eastern Zone on the 19 th
of June.
We had one boys team represent the
west in year 7 volleyball. The team
made up of players from the maths
and science academy, did a great job
at the district level, making the grand
final. A big thanks to Emma Krauer
and Tara Reinshagen for umpiring and
supporting the year 7’s on the day.
Our senior baseball team had the
Eastern Zone event on April 30 which
they won and progress to the State
Final on Tuesday May 29 – keep an
eye out for results in the next
newsletter.
Our senior girls football team played
on a horrible cold day where they got
beaten by the East in the first round
of competition, knocking them out.
The 9-12 students have been
competitive in their year level
competitions, given the tough opponents
of the East. With the East
playing basketball in the premier
division, this opened up an
opportunity for the West to win the
district competition. The west girls did
just this, beating Fairhills quite easily
in the grand final. They will play
Eastern Zone on the 2 nd of August.
Cross Country was the last event for
week 5 with many year 7 students
running but with our best
performances coming from Teagan
Sheldon (2 nd ) and Ryan Laffan (5 th ).
Along with Teagan and Ryan, the
following qualified for Eastern Zone –
Luke Morgan, Lessica Lillie, Ebony
Blight, Emma Santamaggio and Amy
Syer. Good luck on June 22!

Pizzey Cup 2012
Rowville Secondary College students,
Michael Best and Alex van de
Steenoven recently participated in a
successful School Sports Victorian
Pizzey Cup team, which finished 3rd at
the 2012 National competition. The
Bronze medal performance also saw 4
of the team selected the All Australian
team, one of which was Michael Best
(see photo). As mentioned in the
previous article, this was Michael's
second Pizzey cup team and he made
the most of it. Alex was on his first
trip and also had a very strong
showing. Both boys also did very well
in the Tennis Australia Cup singles
tournament, losing in the round of 16.
The 2012 Victorian Pizzey Cup team
travelled to Toowoomba on the 28th
April and were greeted with a
torrential downpour. It was raining
when the team arrived at Brisbane
airport on the bus trip to their
accommodation. No practice was
possible in the afternoon, and the first
day's play was washed out. The
competition was comprised of 7
teams playing a total of 6 matches
each.
Team Vic opened their account
against South Australia with a strong
17-1 win. Tasmania were next, and
the Vics went one better with a 18-0
win. ACT were the Vics third
opponent, and were duly handed a 17
-1 result as the Victorian team started
to gather some momentum. The
match versus QLD was a close
affair, however the Vics were on
the wrong end of a few key
matches and went down 13-5 to
the eventual silver medallists.
Regrouping the Vics showed
their class with a 16-2 win over a
well-credentialed WA team.
The final round saw the Vics
pitted against the strong NSW
team, who had won on the 3
previous occasions. The Vics
were level after the Doubles and
the Mixed doubles matches, and
needed to win the majority of
the singles to cause an upset. It
was not to be and NSW duly won
the match and the Cup with a
well deserved 12-6, but Team Vic
was far from disgraced.
In the Pizzey cup there are 12 singles
matches (6 girls and 6 boys) and 4
doubles matches ( 2 girls and 2 boys)
and 2 mixed doubles matches, a total
of 18.
Michael won 2 of 4 singles matches,
and won 3 of 4 in the doubles &
mixed doubles matches.
Alex won 4 of 5 in the singles and 5 of
6 in the doubles & mixed doubles
matches.

undefeated again despite the
weather. S.E.D.A (another tennis
sports program) was the toughest
opponent, yet the boys earned their
win 4 – 2.
destroyed in the final when he came
up against quality opposition.
Michael played the best game I’d seen
in the tournament, although lost it 6 –
4.
Knox District (played at Knox) was an
easy win for the boys. Michael Best,
Alex van de Steenoven and Nathan
Ponton did not lose a set, in fact they
lost very few games.
Eastern Zone (played at Ringwood)
presented us with tough, windy
conditions. Alex and Nathan again did
not lose a set. Box Hill who have a
specialist tennis program was our
toughest opponent but we still
managed to beat them 4 – 2.
Eastern Conference finals (played at
Traralgon) brought tough conditions
again. It was extremely windy this
State finals had Rowville as one of the
last 8 schools of over 400, we played
Ballarat Secondary College (won 6 –
0), Viewbank College (won 4 -2),
Catholic College Wodonga (won 4 – 2)
and made the grand final against
Maribyrnong (a specialist tennis
college). They had 8 strong players
and we lost 4 – 1 (but expected to win
the other doubles game).
Alex again won all sets and remained
undefeated for the tournament.
Nathan was injured and hopping. He
still won his first singles game and one
doubles game for the day but was
Ha Park, a year 8 student did
extremely well for the day winning 3
of his 4 singles games. He was
outclassed in the final.
James Makrodimitris and Mitch
Atherton, our #5 and #6, both had the
opportunity to play a singles and
doubles game and did their best.
A sensational effort against quality
opposition. I’m really proud of the
boys and their effort. It was a
tremendous shame we could not have
a real crack at them at full strength
without injuries.
