APPLICATION FOR SCHOOL TRANSPORT – POST 16 STUDENTS

POST 16 SCHOOL TRANSPORT POLICY
Free transport will be provided if your child is attending their catchment area school and the distance
between home and school is more than three miles, measured by the nearest available walking route. If
your catchment area secondary school does not have a sixth form, another school is designated as the
catchment school for sixth form studies. If you require advice about this, you should contact the School
Places Team.
If your child has been attending the nearest school to your current address and receiving transport,
but this is not the catchment school, and they continue into the sixth form, transport will be provided
subject to the same distance requirement.
If your child has been attending a denominational secondary school and receiving assistance with
transport on denominational grounds, you will continue to receive this assistance to enable them to
continue into the sixth form.
If the preferred subjects are not available in the catchment school, assistance will be given to the
nearest maintained school offering the subjects. As with denominational transport, you would,
however, be responsible for your child's transport arrangements. Assistance would be limited to a
seat on an existing service or the payment of a parental grant. Entitlement will be assessed on the
basis of subject availability and not the wish to study a particular syllabus.
If, having been awarded assistance with transport on the basis of a particular combination of subjects,
your child subsequently changes their course, the Authority would withdraw assistance if there is no
longer an entitlement. You should advise the School Places Team immediately if your child changes
their course.
If transport entitlement is important, you should seek advice before decisions are taken. The School
Transport Policy is fully explained in information sheet No 1, a copy of which can be obtained by
phoning (01228) 606008/ 606044. A new application is needed for each year of sixth form study
using Form PTSU/T/12/13, even if your child is remaining at their existing school. Further Education
College students should seek advice from Student Support Services in the Children’s Services
Directorate; telephone Carlisle (01228) 606773.
It is important to return this form in good time for transport arrangements to be organised. Refunds
will not be made for late applications. Pupils transferring into Year 13 should complete and return an
application form for second year transport during the summer term.

I agree that, should I be entitled to transport for my child, in the event of the contract ticket no
longer being required before the date of its expiration, I will immediately return it to the
Authority. In the event of my failure to do so, I will repay the Authority a sum equal to the
value of the ticket or to the unexpired portion of it.
