Improve and expand transportation<br />
services for the disabled.<br />
Introduce Equal Opportunity legislation to<br />
eliminate discrimination in the work place.<br />
Give persons with disabilities expanded<br />
political and social opportunities.<br />
Reduce the cost of health care<br />
equipment needed by persons with<br />
disabilities by removing customs duties<br />
and taxes.<br />
Introduce legislation for mandatory<br />
standards for building codes, in compliance<br />
with international requirements.<br />
Mandate wheelchair ramps at all newly<br />
constructed public places and on all<br />
sidewalks.<br />
HOMELESSNESS<br />
ALP corruption and mis-management have<br />
resulted in increasing levels of poverty and<br />
homelessness. The increase in substance abuse<br />
has also increased homelessness.<br />
A <strong>UPP</strong> Government will:<br />
Institute a national programme of care and<br />
treatment for the homeless.<br />
Work in partnership with civil society to<br />
opreate rehabilitative programmes at<br />
shelters.<br />
Quality Health Care for All<br />
The <strong>UPP</strong> considers access to health care a<br />
fundamental right of every <strong>Antigua</strong>n and<br />
Barbudan, foreign born as well as native. We<br />
are committed to developing a healthier and<br />
more productive society by embarking on a<br />
program of preventative medicine and healthy<br />
lifestyle choices. We pledge to upgrade our<br />
neglected medical facilities and provide the best<br />
quality health services for our residents, while<br />
granting the health care professionals the<br />
courtesy and respect they deserve.<br />
The <strong>UPP</strong> will:<br />
Introduce a National Health Insurance<br />
Plan, which will provide universal health<br />
care coverage to all.<br />
Investigate the transfer of Holberton<br />
Hospital to a foreign entity for $1.00 as was<br />
announced by the government last year.<br />
Investigate who owns the Mount St. John’s<br />
Medical Centre, which was financed by<br />
Stanford’s funds.<br />
Add arthritis and epilepsy to the list of<br />
diseases covered by the Medical Benefits<br />
Scheme.<br />
Significantly reduce the taxes on a wide<br />
range of over-the-counter<br />
pharmaceutical products, antibiotics,<br />
vitamins, baby products, and medicines,<br />
including medicines for arthritis, cancer,<br />
circulatory disorders, HIV/AIDS, and<br />
disorders of the ears, nose and throat.<br />
Extend the hours of operation of the<br />
main MBS Pharmacy to include Sundays<br />
and public holidays.<br />
