Stop and Think.
Have you ever stopped to think about faithfulness? This week is the last week of Advent and in the gospel we hear the
familiar story of the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel visited Mary, and Mary answers God with the ultimate act of
faithfulness called her fiat (Latin word meaning “let it be done”). Through all the readings this weekend we hear stories
of faithfulness. David was faithful in showing his concern for the dignity of God’s presence in the Ark, God shows his
faithfulness in making a covenant with David and his bloodline, and Mary shows her faithfulness with her fiat. This got
me thinking about the faithfulness of those people surrounding the birth of Jesus. Joseph came to mind
immediately. Matthew’s Gospel records Joseph’s perspective of the birth of Jesus and throughout that whole story
Joseph is depicted as taking immediate action to the will of God. Matthew does not record any words that Joseph may
have said, but Joseph’s actions speak much louder than words can. Joseph does not hesitate when God’s messenger tells
him to take Mary into his home, nor when he tells Joseph to flee to Egypt, and when the angel calls him back out of Egypt
Joseph “rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.” Each time Joseph is asked to follow the will
of God scripture tells us that as soon as he awoke he did as God had asked. God’s ultimate message is in the
incarnation. Jesus comes and asks us to love God and love each other, can we act with the faithfulness of Mary, Joseph,
David and all the other people who were immediately faithful to the will of God?
