Achillea<br />

Yarrow<br />

One of the easiest perennials to grow and a good<br />

choice for beginners. Keep this plant out of heavy<br />

moist soils, divide every 2 years in spring or fall<br />

and remove spent flowers to ensure months of<br />

color. After flowers fade, cut plant back by half to<br />

stimul<strong>at</strong>e a second flush of bloom. Perfect for<br />

areas th<strong>at</strong> are dry and hot. Ferny green leaves.<br />

Blooms early to mid summer.<br />

Gypsy White<br />

zones 4-9<br />

Gypsy White intermingles well with other plants to<br />

fill in the middle ground of a combin<strong>at</strong>ion. This<br />

Achillea also does well as a nice dried flower. Use<br />

as a specimen plant, in mass plantings, or in a<br />

container. It is drought tolerant and can withstand<br />

dry conditions. Height: 8-12”; Spread: 12-18”<br />

Moonshine<br />

zones 3-8<br />

Still one of the most popular garden plants today,<br />

Moonshine is valuable in the landscape because it<br />

combines well with almost everything. It is a<br />

terrific foil for many other colors including purple,<br />

blue, and pink. Its fl<strong>at</strong>-topped, canary yellow<br />

flower clusters and bright silver foliage light up the<br />

garden. This is a clump-forming selection th<strong>at</strong><br />

blooms over a long period beginning in early<br />

summer. Plants will rebloom if they are cut back<br />

after the first round of flowering. Height: 18-24”,<br />

Aconitum<br />

Monkshood / Wolfbane<br />

An excellent plant for full sun or filtered light<br />

areas. They demand ample moisture but not<br />

wetness, mulch them so moisture is constant. Keep<br />

well fertilized, they are especially fond of<br />

phosphorus. Each flower is shaped like a little<br />

helmet, hence the common name. Staking is<br />

recommended if your Aconitum grows fairly tall.<br />

Upright spikes of violet-blue flowers from mid to<br />

l<strong>at</strong>e summer when few other blue flowers are in<br />

bloom. The distinctive, deeply divided, dark green,<br />

glossy foliage provides interest when the plant is<br />

Actacea pachypoda<br />

White Baneberry<br />

This plant prefers to be grown in light to full shade<br />

and moist, fertile soil. It is rarely bothered by pests<br />

or diseases. Caution: the fruits of this plant are<br />

extremely poisonous if ingested.<br />

Misty Blue<br />

This lovely n<strong>at</strong>ive woodland perennial forms a<br />

sizable multi-stemmed clump of soft blue-green<br />

foliage and is similar to Cimicifuga in habit. It is a<br />

dependable, low maintenance, long-lived perennial<br />

once established. In l<strong>at</strong>e spring to early summer,<br />

small clusters of white flowers are produced just<br />

above the foliage. These flowers develop into<br />

panicles of showy white fruits which are borne on<br />

red pedicels in autumn for 4-6 weeks.<br />

Snow-on-the-Mountain<br />

A vigorous ground cover th<strong>at</strong> does well on banks,<br />

hard to maintain places or planted under larger<br />

woody trees and shrubs. At the end of a hot, dry<br />

summer, just run the lawn mower over it and w<strong>at</strong>er<br />

it deeply a few times to encourage fresh new<br />

growth. AKA Bishop Weed and Gout Weed.<br />

Ajuga<br />

Bugleweed<br />

Rapid growing ground cover with upright flowers<br />

blooming April through May. Spreads vigorously<br />

and is thus recommended for filling large areas like<br />

banks and hillsides. It also makes a gre<strong>at</strong> under<br />

planting for a number of Hosta varieties. Prefers<br />

partial shade to full shade but will grow in sun if<br />

constant moisture is provided.<br />

Beautiful, scalloped, dark burgundy foliage appears<br />

almost black. The deep blue flower spikes are<br />

shown off nicely against the dark foliage.<br />
