Editor’s Letter
Bigger and better.
It’s inspirational to see spring finally here. I always look
forward to seeing the new growth on the trees and the
colourful spring flowers bursting open.
This issue marks a significant change for us here at
LUXURY. We’re excited to showcase a much bigger
magazine – now at 120 pages. This edition also looks
back over the last five years of reviews to bring you our
very first ‘Best of the best’ for both city hotels and beach
resorts. We don’t often have time to reflect back so now is the opportune moment
to do so as we re-visit some of LUXURY’s absolute favourites. We are also moving
to a six monthly publication cycle, but will still bring you the best of luxury stays
from around the world.
“This edition also looks back over the last five years
of reviews to bring you our very first ‘Best of the Best’
for both city hotels and resorts.”
This issue, we also visit Buenos Aires, the home of the flamboyant Tango and step
out into its lively city scene. We indulge and stay at the Four Seasons in Langkawi
– an archipelago made up of 99 islands on Malaysia’s west coast. Then we touch
down in Macau to sample the new lifestyle resort called Galaxy, offering everything
you could ever want in both entertainment and relaxation.
Closer to home, Peter Thornley gives a first-hand account on the recent opening of
Wakatipu Grill at Hilton Queenstown and we explore a serene retreat in Fiji that’s
less known to New Zealanders, Wakaya Club & Spa.
So enjoy the read and I invite you to email me your thoughts on your luxury travel
finds to mel@travelpublications.co.nz. I look forward to hearing from you.
Keep relishing what the wonderful world of travel has to offer.
Disney magic arrives
in Hawai’i
Here’s an intriguing proposition. Disney
is one of the world’s mega brands – but
is it a luxury brand? To find out, catch
a flight to Hawai’i. You’ll find there’s
nothing Mickey Mouse about Disney’s
new Aulani Resort & Spa on the leeward
side of O’ahu.
Singapore spa luxury on the 55th floor
Ozone: one amazing bar
You won’t need too many cocktails to alter your state of consciousness when you visit the
Ritz Carlton Hong Kong’s new bar. Ozone will blow your mind with its décor. It’s on the
118th floor, so your head will be in the clouds as soon as you step out of the lift.
The design breaks all sorts of rules, with a futuristic but somehow retro, Star Trek feel. The
opulent furnishings, dramatic lighting and imaginative layout combine to create a bar with
an atmosphere that’s utterly contemporary. A must-visit when you’re next in Hong Kong
– linger for the evening and soak up the latest beats while watching dusk turn to night as
the lights twinkle over Victoria Harbour.
Auckland to Adelaide
made easier
Air New Zealand is upping capacity on
its direct flights to six trips a week for
November, February and March and
daily trips for December and January
(from the current four weekly services).
Land is in short supply in Singapore, so now they’re developing the sky. The city’s first
Banyan Tree Spa can be found on the 55th level of the spectacular Marina Bay Sands Hotel.
Walt Disney Imagineers worked hand in
hand with locals to create a place that
celebrates Hawaiian culture, history
and traditions. From the contemporary
Hawaiian art featured throughout the
Resort, to a myriad of recreational
activities, culinary programs, excursions
and more, Aulani immerses you in
the legends of the islands so you can
experience the enchantment of Hawai’i.
Aulani is part of the Ko Olina Resort
Community & Marina, which features
spectacular beaches, a championship golf
course, extensive shopping, snorkelling,
sports fishing, other water sports and
more. Located on the western shore of
O’ahu about 25km from the Honolulu
International Airport in Hawai’i, Aulani
rests on 21 acres of beachfront property.
This ultra high-rise spa infuses the sleek glamour of its modern interior with Banyan Tree’s
tradition of staging sensual Asian-inspired experience to exude a unique sense of place.
The fit-out honours its Asian heritage, celebrating creativity and intricate craftsmanship.
Leaf-patterned hand-carved timber panels by artisans from Indonesia and abaca woven
fibre panels from the Philippines adorn the walls and doors. Travertine marble and onyx as
well as solid bamboo are crafted into the floors and wall panels. Interior furnishings and
décor include Chinese and Thai style paintings, Balinese stone carving and modern day
laser cut-out screens featuring different styles of the Tree of Life. Imagine submitting to
one of the Banyan Tree’s signature treatments, surrounded by the finest Asian art, with a
panoramic city view from the 55th floor to add to the atmosphere. Pure bliss.
Guess how many premium lounges
Emirates has in Dubai?
If your guess was greater than three and less than five, you’re spot on. Emirates has just
opened a new First Class Lounge at Terminal 3 in Dubai International Airport, making it the
fourth dedicated premium Emirates Lounge in Dubai.
The 1,058m 2 lounge boasts a quiet zone with eight recliners, 55 and 65 inch LED TVs,
plush leather armchairs, a choice of formal or relaxed seating, two dining areas, shower
facilities, a business centre with four individual work stations, wireless LAN connectivity
within the lounge, a water feature and contemporary artwork. Work, rest and play – this
lounge has it all.
Victoria reigns when it comes to country spas
The Australian state that likes to think of itself as a tad more sophisticated than those
neighbours to the north now has a new boutique country getaway – Hepburn at Hepburn.
Fourteen fully self-contained villas are nestled in the picturesque bushland of Hepburn
Springs, directly opposite the world-famous Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa.
Designed by David Edelman, each villa has its own north-facing secluded deck overlooking
the forest. Interiors are by David Hicks with two colour palettes on show, one dramatic
and warm with nero marquina marble, dark timber and deep red rugs; the other fresh and
invigorating with silver travertine marble, deep green, crisp white and oak timber finishes.
If you can tear yourself away from all the luxury, the area has plenty to offer. No fewer
than 60 natural mineral springs are located nearby. The region’s finest restaurants and an
abundance of outdoor activities provide the ultimate getaway retreat.
Great news for travellers who won’t
have to look much further than Adelaide
for some great local experiences.
One of Australia’s best foodie gems,
Adelaide Central Market is located
right in the heart of the city, along with
edgy shopping at East Rundle St and an
eclectic mix of great value restaurants
along Gouger St.
This app gets you the
best seat on the plane
Whether you love to curl up in a
window seat or get first dibs on the exit
row, there’s nothing like getting your
preferred seat. Now you can download
an app from the iTune App Store that
does just that. The Jets Flight & Seat
Advisor is a new app to find the best
seat. The app has seat information for
more than 80 carriers and 400 different
aircraft. Seat maps show ‘positive’
(extra leg room) and ‘negative’ (near
bathroom) traits for each seat on every
single plane.

Nothing to hide at Sidart
Auckland diners take note – Sid
Sahrawat’s restaurant in Auckland’s
Ponsonby Road has followed the trend
for interactive cooking and dining. The
premises have been remodeled to open
up the kitchen for full viewing. Patrons
can approach the chefs, discuss meals
and watch their next course being
plated up.
This refreshing open space is
complemented by an exquisite new
entrées menu that showcases a range of
scintillating creations by Sid Sahrawat.
Created with a selection of organic
vegetables and free-range meats, the
new entrées are sure to entice appetites
and tantalize tastebuds.
Maltese showstopper
What do you get when a talented designer
is let loose on a 450 year-old townhouse in
the Maltese port of Vittoriosa? The answer
is Indulgence Divine. That’s the name of
this utterly distinctive townhouse for two,
recently restored with an injection of colour
and sensuous design.
Bespoke furniture sits comfortably alongside
some decidedly funky “found” pieces, all
contrasting with the venerable stone walls
and exquisite wall hangings. The master
bedroom was once a private chapel, so a
stone arch frames the inner sanctum. You’ll
find the private roof terrace is the perfect
spot to unwind with a glass of wine at dusk
when the heat of the day starts to dissipate.
The capital Valletta is just a short ride by
water taxi and your booking includes a pick-up from the international airport. Our verdict:
if you want a very cool base while you explore Malta, this could be your home away
from home.
Chandigarh welcomes its first 5-star hotel
This northern Indian city has its first luxury hotel with the opening of the JW Marriott
Chandigarh. Speaking at the opening of the JW Marriott Chandigarh, Rajeev Menon,
Marriott International’s Area Vice-President, said: “The opening of a JW Marriott Hotel in
Chandigarh is a great milestone for us as Chandigarh is the best-planned city in India with
architecture which is world renowned, and a quality of life which is unparalleled.”
The JW Marriott Chandigarh aims to combine the best traditions of international luxury
and Indian style. The Grand Ballroom, with a majestic ceiling height of more than 6 metres,
stylish design and grandeur, will be a fitting venue for elegant weddings in Punjab.
Luxury, Croatian style
If you’ve never visited the Adriatic coast of Croatia, you’ve missed one of the Mediterranean’s
most delightful spots. The seductive, minimalist curves of the Hotel Lone are utterly
distinctive, yet somehow appropriate for this spot. They evoke an ocean-going liner,
dedicated to catering to your every need.
Curving away from the coastline in a distinctive Y-shape, all 248 rooms offer views of the
island-speckled coast. Delicate wafts of locally grown rosemary, lavender and olive oil tempt
you into the Mediterranean-inspired wellness spa, while the open-plan lobby – bedecked in
mirrors and cool white stones – allows the outstanding natural beauty of the surrounding
area to flood inside. It’s rare to find such a sympathetic melding of nature and technology.
This is one hotel we would definitely like to spend more time in.
All aboard the spa!
A spa on board a boat – water baths inside a vessel, riding on
water. That’s got to be a novel take on spa locations!
Anchored at the Quays of the Old Port of Montreal, Bota Bota,
spa-sur-l’eau offers passengers the healing benefits of a spa
coupled with the natural lulling movements of the St Lawrence
River. The ship once operated as a ferryboat between Sorel and
Berthier Quebec during the 1950s and 1960s, followed by a
stint as a Richelieu River showboat. It has now been completely
refurbished into a day spa, featuring five decks fitted with
various spa installations.
Lufthansa flying high
on biofuel
The German flag carrier has launched
the world’s first scheduled flights using
biofuel, commencing a six-month trial
of a 50/50 mix of regular fuel and
biosynthetic kerosene on a four times
daily Airbus A321 service between
Hamburg and Frankfurt.
Originating from a sustainable supply
and production process, the hybrid
fuel can be used in all jet types without
modifications to the aircraft.
One of the newest and most unique
The newest leisure property for Hilton
recently opened on the popular Gold
Coast. Featuring Salt Grill by celebrity
chef Luke Mangan as well as a purposebuilt
Thai and Japanese style
Koh Samui attracts a lot of visitors – and more than its share of stylish resorts. One of the
newest is Akatsuki, which offers a Japanese-inspired take on Thai luxury. The setting is
magnificent. Akatsuki sits on a beach facing five rock islands across a lagoon. A series of
infinity pools cascade down from a grand entrance pavilion to the beach lawn, with private
habitation and amenity pavilions either side, reflecting the ocean view beyond.
The basic concept is intuitive to the site’s local culture, climate and locality, with a design
that is functional yet luxurious, with minimal dependence on artificial energy. It is built
entirely from recycled wood and uses natural ventilation and shade for optimum comfort.
The resort is available for private use only, and comes complete with four pools, on-site
spa, concierge team, accomplished private chef, personal guide, driver and butler, as well
as numerous entertainment and relaxation spaces.
The passionate people of Buenos Aires love to dance. It’s a
desire that’s embedded deep within their cultural psyche.
When porteños (as they are called) are not dancing the tango
on balmy, sultry Latin nights, they’re watching futbol (football),
a game that is followed with religious fervour.
You will also find porteños promenading around their
architecturally striking city, immersed in animated conversation
and resplendent in the latest chic fashion wear from Italy, France
and Spain.
At other times they will be discussing politics while dining on
the finest beef in the world in restaurants that are fully booked
from midnight until 2am – when the nightclubs start to hum.
Buenos Aires is the city that never sleeps. Having just arrived
from Auckland I’m not about to emulate the fast-paced life of
the porteños tonight.
The morning sees me stepping out to experience the sights of
the elegant, Parisian-inspired boulevards, avenues and alleyways
of this great city of 14 million. Buenos Aires took its first colonial
steps in the barrio (neighbourhood) of Plaza de Mayo, close to
the River Plate, so it’s appropriate to begin my first day’s walking
tour here.
Stepping out
in Buenos Aires
Paul Rush feels the beating heart of an electric city.
From under the gleaming white Pyramid of May, I look at the
broad sweep of public building facades and do a double take.
Am I really in South America? I shake my head in wonder, as all
the stately buildings appear to be faithful reproductions of Old
World edifices that line the piazzas of Rome and the boulevards
of Paris.
My local city guide has the answer to this enigma. It seems that
there was a boom time around 1900 when cattle were king and
wheat was gold. Architects travelled to Europe and returned
home with design ideas that would turn the ‘Great Village of
good airs’ into the ‘Paris of the Pampas’.
A rosy pink palace catches my eye as I face east in the Plaza de
Mayo. The Casa Rosada (Presidential Palace) was originally painted
in a mixture of lime and bovine blood. The door is open on the
first floor speech balcony. I can visualise one-time President Juan
Domingo Peron and Evita addressing the assembled crowd. It
was from here the charismatic Evita wooed her beloved ‘shirtless
ones’ with an emotional plea ‘don’t cry for me Argentina’.
I’m also drawn to the colonnaded, neo-classical splendour of the
Metropolitan Cathedral on the north side of the plaza. Inside,
there is a buzz of activity around the ornate baroque altar. In
a quiet alcove I solemnly approach the statue of Jesus Christ of
the Football Players, where the national team and thousands of
supporters come to pray for victory on each championship year.
Argentine won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986.
Once I emerge into the sunlight and get my bearings. I amble
along the Avenida de Mayo until I reach a prominent red sign,
which reads ‘Café Tortoni 1858’. This café is revered by porteños
as the first French café in the city. I follow the pleasant aroma
of freshly-brewed coffee into the dark-panelled and generouslymirrored
interior and order a cortado (strong espresso) and
medialunas (sweet croissant), just as the conoscente did in the
19th century.
The diners are huddled in close conversation and appear to be
quite physical and demonstrative when speaking. It’s the porteño
way. They are stylishly dressed in formal attire and appear to be
more European in appearance than Latin American. I might well
be sitting in a café in Milan or Madrid. I’m beginning to think
that Buenos Aires is a classic belle-époque European city that has
inexplicably found itself in the heart of South America.
Continuing on my walking tour, I stumble over a weird architectural
creation festooned with gargoyles and other demonic figures.
The Palacio Barolo was inspired by Dantés Divine Comedy. The
entry lobby is decorated as the inferno of Hell, the middle floors
are Purgatory and the upper floors signify Heaven. I take a bumpy
ride in an ancient iron-framed lift, not to enter the pearly gates
but to get a celestial view of the sprawling city.
Catching an inexpensive black and yellow cab (one of 60,000 in
the city) I head to Avenue Ninth of July. This magnificent avenue
hums with a sound that reminds me of low-frequency static in
an amplifier. I stand under the shiny white obelisk that proclaims
Argentina’s independence from Spain and listen to the throb and
thrum of a thousand vehicles traversing the 20 lanes of traffic on
the widest avenue in the world.
At this point I’m rather overwhelmed by the grandeur and
elegance of this vibrant city with a silver lining. Like Paris, it has a
certain je ne sais quoi that compels your attention. The variety of
architecture is surprising and the city is at once bewildering and
beguiling with a subtle blend of old and new.
I stroll east to the main shopping streets of Sante Fe and Florida
which have excellent pedestrian-only precincts. In the Galerias
Pacifico shopping complex with its paintings and frescos by great
masters, I see an impressive range of fashion wear, leather goods,
jewellery and books and sample the mouth-watering helado
(ice cream).
My day of promenading has created an appetite. I find an
Asado restaurant offering a selection of delicious meat cuts
from carcasses suspended over an open charcoal fire. With 50
million beef cattle on the pampas and 6000 restaurants in the
city to serve it, restaurateurs don’t skimp on portion sizes. A
palatable Malbec wine rounds off the meal. I make my way back
to the homely Tanquero Hotel on Suipacha Street for a wellearned
sleep.
Day two sees me jumping on a collectivo (bus), riding to Recoleta,
one of the city’s wealthiest districts. Among the designer fashion
boutiques, ritzy cafés, tango dancing couples, artists, clowns
and human statues is one of Buenos Aires greatest sights – the
Recoleta Cemetery.
I enter the colonnaded gates of this great necropolis and
am instantly lost in a marble-walled labyrinth. Monolithic
mausoleums sit side-by-side with modest tombs in this mini-city
that is a peaceful simulacrum of the frenetic metropolis outside
the gates. I find Eva Peron’s modest resting place, where fresh
flowers attest to the lasting devotion of the porteños.
Another taxi ride and I’m in Calle Defensa, the main street of
San Telmo district. I’m intrigued by the faded grandeur of the
buildings and the free, bohemian spirit of the people. There’s
an unpretentious, working-class charm about this barrio
with its antique dealers, street entertainment, tango dance
demonstrations and café culture. Taking a lunch break, I have a
choice of generous portions of pasta, parrilla (barbecued meat)
or pizza, which I finally select and it’s delicious.
It’s fascinating how Buenos Aires is so cosmopolitan and diverse
in its barrio neighbourhoods. Some have undergone significant
gentrification and are now slick and flashy, like San Telmo.
Others retain their historic, downtrodden look, like La Boca, my
final destination.
La Boca is the cradle of tango and also home to the La Boca
Juniors, Argentina’s greatest football team. In the Football
Museum I meet a larger-than-life statue of Diego Maradonna, an
idolised national hero. I stroll down the tourist honey trap of El
Caminito, an alleyway with eye-catching murals and corrugatediron
clad buildings decorated in unbelievably garish colours.
Buenos Aires is an exciting destination, a European-style cocktail
of pleasures and sights, laced with loads of Latin verve and
energy. For the Kiwi traveller it’s reasonably inexpensive with our
favourable exchange rate.
After two days on the trot I rate Buenos Aires as one of the best
walking cities on earth. The avenues are perfectly flat, there are
ample cool, shady resting places in parks and gardens and many
relaxing corner cafés.
It’s a city where you can step out in confidence and see everything
it has to offer. Allow several days to appreciate the elegance and
charm. Don’t miss any of it.
Four
Seasons
Resort
Langkawi, Malaysia
The grandeur of the property is immediately evident the moment you enter the resort’s
sweeping drive, defined by imposing five-metre high Ayuthia and rich red-coloured rock
walls. Hidden beyond is a property worthy of the acclaimed brand, built between jagged
limestone cliffs and the emerald blue waters of the Andaman. Designed by acclaimed
architect Lek Bunnag, the Four Seasons is a resort that seamlessly manages to blend
Asian, Indian and Arabic influences to create a uniquely Malaysian milieu, enhanced by
very clever and unique design details that both reveal and complement the remarkable
setting. Throughout the resort, the views are framed by portals of various shapes and
sizes. Curvy Moghul Indian-style windows throughout the lobby look onto massive
ponds surrounded by gardens of bougainvillea. Frangipani and hibiscus are used to
frame one of the many meandering pathways of reclaimed railway ties, strewn with fire
pots. Moorish arches and warm-hued terrazzo baths transform bathrooms into private
hamams. Marble inlays turn private pool cabanas into decadent oases. Set beside one
and a half kilometres of wide, white sandy beach, the resort’s proximity to the sea is
mirrored in the numerous water elements incorporated into the overall design.
Sanctuary for the Senses
Galaxy Macau
The first glimpse of the Galaxy Macau Resort’s identical twin towers
with an opportunity to enjoy the ultimate in entertainment,
the shimmering Pearl River Delta far below. The ultra-modern
If I wish to indulge in more luxury, the Banyan Tree Spa
is overwhelming. The soaring gold and white monoliths rise above
the skyline like a futuristic sci-fi mini-city in a distant universe.
The Resort comprises three distinctive five-star properties with
2,200 rooms, suites and villas across three hotels; the ultraexclusive
Banyan Tree Hotel & Resort, the Okura Hotel & Resort
and the Galaxy Macau Hotel, which opened in May 2011.
The three hotels are fully integrated as entertainment precincts,
sharing common facilities like the gaming room and wave pool.
My hotel, the 256 room Banyan Tree, occupies part of one
tower block, along with the 488 room Okura. The second tower
block is occupied by the 1,500 room Galaxy. Overall, the mega
resort covers a mind-numbing 550,000m 2 and provides guests
dining and leisure activities.
After a full day of shopping and sightseeing in the heritagefilled
avenues and alleyways of Macau – China’s newest Special
Administrative Region – I’m grateful to escape the 35°C August
heat with a view to soaking in a private relaxation pool within
my Grand Cotai Suite. The Banyan Tree is the first high-rise
hotel in Macau to feature private pools in all its spacious
suites – sanctuaries for the senses. Guests can also choose
a Spa Suite with its own treatment room, a Sky Villa with a
gourmet-outfitted kitchen or a Sanctuary Pool Villa with a
Resort Host presiding over every need. My large luxury suite is
light and airy with a panoramic view of busy shipping lanes on
design elements are simple and elegant – marble, glass,
stainless steel and contemporary sculptures, all conducive to
feelings of calmness and relaxation. The decor is inspired by
Chinese architecture and style, combining ancient traditions
with modern furnishings that are visually striking in their beige
and vermillion red accents.
The main entry foyer of the Galaxy gives one a palpable sense
of peace and tranquillity. Fragrant scents float in the air and
staff add the human touch with smiles and warm greetings.
A mammoth multi-coloured water fountain, monumental
chandelier and a huge cut-glass diamond rise and fall in an
impressive water and light show. It’s an experience of fantasy,
anticipation and delight that is filled with feng shui.
offers 21 treatment rooms that are steeped in holistic Asian
healing traditions. I’m looking forward to dining later in the
Belon Oyster Bar & Grill, the resort’s signature restaurant that
specialises in seafood and steak meals.
Each day’s stay is full of opportunity and promise. I check out
the gaming hall, which covers the area of three football fields
and is a fairytale scene of flashing lights, whirring machines,
jangling jackpot bells and high-octane excitement.
Story: Paul Rush

Everything is on a grand scale here. I’m overawed by the world’s
largest rooftop wave pool. The Sky Wave Pool has breakers as
high as 1.5 metres that surge up a white sand beach, creating a
tropical setting that resembles a South Seas island lagoon where
guests can lounge in salubrious surrounds with cocktails at hand.
High overhead, the twin tower blocks are topped off with six
cupolas dressed with twenty-four carat gold leaf, enough to cover
87 football fields. From this angle the golden cupolas glistening
in the sun are reminiscent of Istanbul and Moscow. The cupolas
are instantly recognisable symbols in the city’s hottest leisure and
entertainment district, the Cotai Strip. The property owners have
spared no expense to create a unique hospitality ethos based on
their ‘World Class, Asian Heart’ philosophy.
The three resorts are a paradise for lovers of fine food and wine.
With many restaurants and bars, every day offers the temptations
of a new culinary adventure. I enjoy the exquisite tastes of
Japanese Kaiseki in the elegant surroundings of Yamazato and
also sample the Michelin-recommended Cantonese cuisine in
Laurel. It is said that the finest Korean barbecue outside of Seoul
is on offer at the stylish Myung Ga.
Shopping in the Galaxy offers a wide range of luxury items,
which are normally priced lower than Hong Kong. This includes
cameras, porcelain, electronic goods, mobile phones, watches,
cashmere sweaters, silk clothing and jewellery.
As dusk descends over the broad Pearl River, the Galaxy Macau
resort towers gleam brightly with a golden glow and the garish
‘Neon City’ of the Cotai Strip arouses the senses, fires the spirit
and the imagination. Macau is a high-tech city of bright lights that
never sleeps, driven by sheer dynamism towards a remarkable
tourist-centred future - ‘A world of difference’ where the West
meets the East.
Getting there:
Cathay Pacific operates up to 14 direct flights weekly from
Auckland to Hong Kong. Most flights connect to the Turbo
Jetfoil service to Macau at Hong Kong Airport’s Sky Pier.
What to see and do:
On the peninsula, the Ruins of St Paul’s, the Monte Fort
and Museum of Macau, Senado Square, A-Ma Temple,
Private Island
Resort in Fiji
The Wakaya Club & Spa - Secret island
getaway of the rich and famous
Although not overly well known to New Zealand travellers, The Wakaya Club & Spa has long been
recognised as one of the world’s finest tropical resorts. It’s also been the secret getaway for many
a celebrity, including an injury prone Keith Richards who a few years back fell out of a tree while
enjoying a private picnic on one of Wakaya’s deserted beaches. Yes, it’s very exclusive and so very
private – two key attributes that attract some of the paparazzi shy guests, but it also retains that
special Fijian warmth of hospitality that is given to all and I was taken in by its charm from the
moment I arrived.
Wakaya is a private island of 2,200 acres, a mere forty minute flight from Nadi airport and situated
in the Koro Sea due east of Vitu Levu, the main island of Fiji. In 1789 Captain William Bligh sailed
right by Wakaya Island after the mutiny on his famed ship, The Bounty. Over 200 years later,
Canadian entrepreneur David Gilmour and his New Zealand born wife Jill fell in love with the
island’s unspoiled natural beauty and they dreamed of creating the ultimate tropical haven on
this tiny sliver of paradise. Their vision was to create a small, private luxury resort that offered an
extraordinary vacation experience to just a handful of guests that also contributed to the quality of
life for the people of Fiji. The rest as they say, is history.
The experience starts with the short air transfer in the resorts stylish Grand Cessna aircraft. The
advantage of having their own plane means that in most cases (weather permitting) they are able
to schedule the flight time to coincide perfectly with your arrival. No wasting precious time at the
airport and especially convenient for many of Wakaya’s jet lagged, long haul travellers. Another
unique feature is that you are able to check-in well before noon and depart late afternoon, so
in effect you receive an additional day at no extra cost. Upon arrival, it’s easy to see why the
Gilmour’s were so taken by this island. Blessed with unmistakable beauty, Wakaya boasts majestic
cliffs, countless pristine beaches and is surrounded by a protected coral reef offering some of the
world’s best diving – and all just minutes
from shore. In fact, during my visit I met
a well travelled guest and keen diving
enthusiast who was so taken by the
underwater experience, he dived twice a
day for the entire duration of his stay.
With only ten bures, Wakaya is very much
a boutique property, each of which line the
immaculate beachfront (no bures without
a view here) and all are very generously
spaced apart, providing the utmost
privacy. Our home was the very large
Governors Bure, exquisitely furnished by
Jill Gilmour, the bure is filled with precious
artefacts from their many travels which
compliment the elegant, colonial inspired
furnishings – such attention to detail; it
feels like someone’s home and creates
such a warm, inviting space. The simple,
rectangular shaped floor plan consists
of a spacious lounge, separate master
bedroom and a bathroom the size of most
standard hotel suites. Laid in stone, it
comes complete with a rock walled open
air double shower and a recessed oval spa
bath for two, enclosed by floor to ceiling
glass with a view out to your very own
private garden. Modern touches include
DVD, flat screen TV, surround sound
stereo but special mention must go to the
master suite, which contained the most
comfortable bed of any luxury resort I
have stayed at, bar none.
“Whatever, whenever, wherever” is the
mantra of Wakaya and its fair to say that
they absolutely deliver on this promise.
The cuisine is of the highest international
standard, partly due to the in-house
mentoring from some of the world’s
most talented chefs, including renowned
celebrity chef Nobu. With a focus on
fresh, local ingredients and the finest
balanced. Another popular dining option
is a romantic picnic for two with your own
private beach as a back-drop, a lobster
and Champagne hamper and a two-way
radio for when you decide to be collected
– or to order more Champagne!
For the energetic, there is a better than
expected nine hole golf course, flood
lit tennis court and a small but wellequipped
gym. A trip to Wakaya would
not be complete without experiencing
the underwater wonders around the
island. Diving and snorkelling are available
whenever you wish – no timetable, you
choose. Or for a romantic indulgence, try
the three-hour couples retreat. A series
of pampering treatments and a private
beachside candle lit dinner in the seclusion
of the spa sanctuary.
Yes, there are some newer luxury resorts
on offer in Fiji, but Wakaya is something
truly special and if anything, has improved
with age. The world needs these types of
properties, gems that have that certain
X-factor. Part of what makes it a favourite
and perhaps the secret of the island’s
success, lies in the incredible staff, many
of whom have been with the resort since
its opening in 1992. It’s fantastic to see
the pride they have in both themselves
and in what they have helped create. A
mention must also be given to General
Manager, Willow Fish. Polished and
gregarious, she leads the team with
infectious enthusiasm and having moved
to Fiji as a child, possesses an intimate
knowledge and respect for the local
culture – a perfect combination for such
a role. Wakaya, born from a couple’s
dream and now one of the world’s most
awarded luxury island resorts. No mean
feat and a testament to the passion of the
imported meats, the daily changing à la Gilmours and the love that the people of
24 Hours in:
Shanghai
If you love bustling, vibrant cities with a dash of exoticism, you’ll love Shanghai.
Philip Tetley-Jones touched down for a look.
7.15am. Returning from a midsummer jaunt around Europe, I’ve
postponed my return to the everyday by booking a stopover in
China’s commercial capital. I have heard great things about the
rejuvenation of Shanghai so it’s time I checked it out. The airport is
certainly big, modern and very efficient. There are two options for
my trip to the city centre – taxi or monorail. No need to overthink
this one.
7.50am. The train uses maglev technology. That stands for magnetic
levitation, but it feels more like magic. An electromagnetic system
means the entire train hovers a couple of centimetres above the
track and is propelled along the raised monorail route at the speed
of an F1 car - it reaches 430 km an hour and we cover the 30 km
to Longyang Road station in eight minutes.
8.40am. I check into the Fairmont Peace Hotel in the legendary
Bund district on the south bank of the Huangpu River. It’s an
absolutely prime location with Art Deco mansions and commercial
buildings preserved from the pre-Communist era. Just to remind
us that we’re not back in the 1930s, the view across the river to
Pudong includes an icon of modern China – the Oriental Pearl
TV Tower.
Old and new meet in the Fairmont, to stunning effect. It’s a place
of early 20th century opulence, with Art Deco fittings and original
Lalique to catch the eye. Built in 1929, it has just re-opened after
a three-year renovation.
11.35am. After freshening up in the most lavish hotel suite I’ve
seen in a long time, it’s time to start exploring the city. A short
walk takes me to Nanjing Road – the 5.5 kilometre retail spine of
Shanghai. There are 600 shops here, so if you want anything from
a bottle of water to a Porsche, this is the place to go.
3.34pm. Nanjing Road, with its Singapore on steroids vibe, is
pretty energising, but I’m ready for a taste of heritage now.
Yuyuan garden in the centre of the old city is a place of tranquil
vistas, rockeries, pavilions and ponds. Yuyuan was established in
1559 and declared a national monument in the 1980s. Always
popular with modern day visitors, its immaculate setting proclaims
the timeless values of Chinese artists.
7.30pm. Where to dine? It’s a tricky question, because Shanghai
spoils you for choice. Do I try the spicy dumplings the region is
renowned for? Or check out the chic international restaurants on
the Bund. The ever-helpful staff at the Fairmont Peace Hotel steer
me to Fu 1088, a restored colonial mansion that serves excellent
Shanghainese cuisine in private dining rooms. This is the place to
meet friends and relax over delicacies such as tea-smoked duck
eggs and rich, red-braised pork belly served on bamboo shoots
in a black clay pot. Delightfully decadent but somehow not
overpowering – a bit like Shanghai itself.
Capella
Sentosa Island, Singapore
It may not be a brand that you have heard of, but in the heavyweight division of the
luxury market, Capella is a fearsome competitor which is fast earning a reputation for
not only rivalling the world’s finest, but setting a new standard all its own. Capella
Singapore exemplifies all that is required to be regarded as a truly great hotel and it
was my privilege to experience all that it had to offer.
Once your reservation is confirmed, the first-class service commences. Before arrival
you are contacted by your very own personal assistant who will happily organise
every detail of your stay. Whether it be securing a seat in an ‘impossible to get into’
restaurant, or booking an airport transfer in one of the in-house Rolls-Royce Phantoms,
they will customise an entire itinerary and provide preferential service for the entirety
of your visit.
Nestled amid 30-acres of lush rainforest with the South China Sea as its backdrop,
Capella Singapore enjoys a prime elevated position on Sentosa Island. Space on this
scale is indeed a rarity in Singapore and this peaceful sanctuary feels a world away
from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, yet it’s just minutes away.
Designed by famed London architects, Foster & Partners, Capella Singapore is a
masterful fusion of old and new. Two beautifully restored 1880’s British colonial
buildings form the heart of the property while newly built modern, curved additions
blend seamlessly, creating an outstanding example of intelligent design.
Due to outstanding feedback, we had
chosen to stay in one of the signature
Capella Suites, which impressed on many
levels. The layout was very well conceived,
designed to maximise the ample space.
Oversized windows front the entire length
of the suite providing grandstand views
out to the South China Sea from almost
every area. Interiors were a sumptuous
combination of modern and classic Asian
inspired touches. Rich wood floors with
marble in-lays, thick woven rugs and
elegant furnishings in natural, earthy
tones complemented by fine art and dark
wood accents. Hugging the front of the
suite with just a glass wall separating you
from the view, the designer bathroom laid
in lava rock, features his and her marble
vanities with an open, two person rain
shower and access to a very private outside
deck with chaise lounge, table and chairs.
Technologically smart features include
an iPad sized touch screen hidden in the
beside drawer, controlling everything from
activating the ‘do not disturb’ button,
Bose stereo system, air conditioning and
the master light settings. Open the front
door and the blinds go up and one of
the ambient light settings automatically
activate. Flat screen TVs placed like pieces
of artwork swivel off the wall in both the
lounge and bedroom, again positioned to
not distract from the view.
Recreational facilities include a large multitier
river stone infinity pool that seems to
cascade down the terraced manicured
designed alongside the energies of the
lunar phases in order to align the rhythms
of nature with each individual.
Dining options include lively tapas and
(serious) cocktails at the poolside Bob’s
Bar, reminiscent of the Cuban island bars
of the 1950s and 60s. Relax indoors and
enjoy a pre-dinner tiple, including premium
aged rum from Cuba and Caribbean
cigars. Or, step outdoors to the terrace
and lounge on the plush sofas and extra
large daybeds. The Knolls is an all-day fine
dining restaurant and the most popular
spot in the city for a lavish Sunday brunch.
Dine inside or alfresco style overlooking
the reflecting pools and distant sea with
the hundreds of cargo ships anchored out
from shore waiting for their turn to enter
the port. With a nod to its Colonial past,
afternoon tea is served daily with more
Best of the Best
The concept of luxury suggests exclusivity – yet one website purports to list more than
5,000 five-star and luxury hotels in 208 countries. The true total is almost certainly higher.
While it is fantastic to have so many prestigious properties vying for your holiday dollar,
common sense suggests they will not all be of the same stellar standard. At the very top of
the market, it’s the intangible factors that set a hotel apart. The attitude of the receptionist
who greets you by name. The view from the rooftop terrace as the sun goes down. These
things are hard to pick up from a brochure or website – but they can make a world of
difference to your experience.
That’s why, five years ago, we had the idea of capturing and conveying those very personal
experiences in our detailed reviews. LUXURY is a magazine that is built on hundreds of hotel
nights, from Fiji to France. Our writers have walked through the lobbies, checked into the
rooms, dined in the restaurants and submitted to the spa treatments – all in the worthy
cause of finding out which hotels offer something truly special. In this issue, we have looked
back at our experiences and cherry-picked the most memorable.
The properties in these pages are the very best of the best, comprising a winning assortment
of both city hotels and luxury resorts. We hope you enjoy our recommendations.
Park Hyatt
Shanghai
Want to feel on top of the world? Then you’ll need to head to the highest hotel
in the world – the Park Hyatt Shanghai. Located on floors 79 through to 93 of
the Shanghai World Trade Centre in the Pudong financial district, this eco-friendly
skyscraper is an astonishing sight. It is sleek and slender in contrast to its neighbour,
the Grand Hyatt, which is an elegant modern pagoda styled building – different but
equally as beautiful.
A striking building on the cityscape, the Trade Centre’s distinctive feature is an
aperture at the peak. Originally it was meant to reduce the stresses of wind pressure,
but it also has meaning in Chinese mythology where the earth is represented with a
square and the sky with a circle.
The entrance is unassuming but as you’re welcomed and chauffeured through a series
of ambient-lit chambers, you feel a sense of calm and at the same time suspense. This
is because you are about to enter a lift that will propel you swiftly upward to the 87th
floor – no stops on the way. As the doors
slide open, you step out and take a first
look at the sophisticated reception area
with a stunning backdrop featuring the
Shanghai skyline.
The hotel’s philosophy is to convey the
feeling of being in a friend’s residence. The
aptly named ‘Living Room’ is the ideal place
to meet someone over a cup of Chinese tea
or light meal. The ‘Dining Room’ restaurant
serves European provincial style cuisine
in a contemporary setting with polished
service. There are several places to wine
and dine within the hotel and also its sister
hotels the Grand Hyatt and the Hyatt on
the Bund. However, special mention needs
to go to 100 Century Avenue Restaurant
located on floor 91. The dramatic location,
with 25m floor to ceiling glass windows
and diverse show kitchens including
a duck-specialised roasting oven, is a
real highlight.
The Water’s Edge is the name of the hotel’s
relaxation zone which, true to Chinese
detoxifying and refreshing the mind and
body. The area also houses a 20m infinity
pool, heated whirlpool, wellness studio
spa, gym and tai chi courtyard. It is quite
an amazing feeling to be swimming in
a pool that high up in the sky. Reserved
as a place to sit and reflect or for fitness
recreation use, this setting will certainly
help you to find inner balance.
The number of guestrooms is surprisingly
small at only 174, lending it more of a
boutique hotel feel. The hushed hallways
lead to discrete entrance doors that open
up into monochromatic coloured rooms.
There is a certain poise provided by the
furnishings that feature precise attention
to detail. I noticed the unsymmetrical
configuration of art, lighting and furniture
that bordered the bed. It was somehow
“...you step out and take a
first look at the sophisticated
reception area with a
stunning backdrop featuring
the Shanghai skyline.”
The highlight of the guestrooms may
well be the capacious and stylish marble
walled ‘bath chambers’, with their underfloor
heating, Plasma TV embedded
into the vanity mirror, freestanding
marble-topped double vanity unit and
aromatherapy toiletries. Choose from
four bathing options: an Oriental bathing
area, an overflowing 230-litre soaking
tub, an oversized monsoon rain shower,
or a hand-held shower.
194m 2 . With ceiling heights of up to 4.3m
and real ‘grass’ art installations (topped
with ceramic dogs), the Chairman Suites
have a distinct loft-like feel.
Each suite comes with its own private
butler – one of a team that has been
handpicked to deliver the incomparable
discreet and personalised service that’s
synonymous with the Park Hyatt brand.
This property left me feeling on top of
the world both literally and emotionally.
The polished and professional service
coupled with the excellent dining options
and of course the view (even on a
hazy day) won me over and I’m keen
to return and spend more time there…
just how you feel when a visit with great
friends ends.
Four
Seasons
Hong Kong
To tower above the competition amongst the world’s most exceptional hotel chains is
no mean feat. Stand-out contenders are those that attempt the slick combination of
unbelievable degrees of customer service mixed with the most lavish surroundings at
every turn.
On our travels we have found only a handful of international hotel brands that deliver
on this promise each and every time – the St. Regis, Ritz Carlton and One & Only. But
there is one top chain that we haven’t reviewed to date: the Four Seasons.
This is a hotel chain with a reputation for understated elegance, without the labyrinth
of sweeping staircases, massive foyer atriums and five marble variants all mixed into
one execution. Four Seasons is all about subtle design cues and less of the fussy.
Classical styles fused with a touch of local flavour.
Mindful of its opulent reputation we headed off to sample first hand the Four Seasons
Hotel, Hong Kong. Our arrival into Hong Kong was late in the evening after a long
flight via Sydney on Virgin Atlantic Airways. The mood was set for luxury as we were
collected from the airport by one of the hotel’s limos, and as we entered the hotel this
sentiment continued. A short six-storey
atrium extending partially from one end of
the otherwise understated lobby hinted at
greater things to come without shouting
it right at us.
We were greeted warmly, in an efficient
and quick manner, and it was immediately
obvious that this hotel was geared to the
business traveller. Approached separately
by a different staff member, we were
ushered directly to our rooms. My
travelling colleague and I found ourselves
checked in, there and then, in the comfort
of our hotel suites – documents were
signed, credit card details exchanged
and then done, we were in! No hanging
around in the foyer, as in most hotels,
which is a bonus when arriving late at
night off a long flight.
We’ve only experienced this personalised
service a handful of times and it makes
for a great start to any trip. With only a
three-day visit to this lively city, an express
check-in meant we were out sampling
Hong Kong’s bustling nightlife pronto.
A unique characteristic of the Four Seasons
is having a choice of room themes. We
each had an Executive Suite and could opt
for either a modern take on traditional
Chinese décor or a more contemporary
European rendition – both as beautiful as
each other. With a room each, we decided
to sample both variations.
But this was no subtle wallpaper or carpet
colour change – these themed room
options meant not only variations in décor
but striking differences in the bathroom
layout, lounge furniture and fittings.
With an intuitive layout, the generous
sized rooms (68m 2 to be exact) made
the most of the striking view with a large
floor-to-ceiling arc of glass spanning both
the expansive bedroom and lounge. Each
room featured all the modern touches
that we have come to expect in a property
of this class – iPod Bose speaker system,
42” plasma in the lounge and bedroom
along with air-conditioning and electric
curtain controls at the bedside.
Further luxurious and unique touches
included a stunning selection of breakfast,
lunch, canapés and drinks at the Club
Lounge that are complimentary for
guests who stay in suites. With French
Champagne, fine aged ports and an
impressive wine selection all included on
the complimentary drinks list, what better
way to kick off an evening or to wind
down after a dinner out.
Added to this are the divine in-room petit
fours. Ours dripped with chocolate and
gold leaf, making a return to our room
after dinner an extra special treat.
One of the must do’s of this hotel (or of
any stay in Hong Kong) is a visit to the
hotel’s Chinese restaurant, Lung King
Heen (View of the Dragon). Here the
food is a superb example of modern and
traditional cuisine. The yum cha is the
best we have ever had – in particular, the
lobster, prawn and scallop dumplings are
to die for!! Not so impressive was the
hotel’s chicken rendition of a Chinese
classic, Peking Duck. It didn’t work and it
would have been better if they had stuck
with the original recipe.
A big draw card is the hotel’s location
for both leisure and business travellers
alike. Positioned on the waterfront, it is
just a two-minute walk from the Central
District, which is one of the major
financial centres of Asia. From there it’s a
short trip by boat across Victoria Harbour
to Kowloon or 10-15 minutes by taxi.
Below the hotel is an underground train
station taking you directly to the airport,
making it a very quick and convenient
travel option.
Our impression of the Four Seasons Hong
Kong was that of a beautiful hotel with
delightful, friendly staff at every turn. It
felt small and intimate even though it is
much larger than it appears – partly due
to its clever building design, with it only
ever being a short walk to your room
from the service areas of the hotel.
The Four Seasons is our pick for the best
hotel in Hong Kong as nothing else offers
such a complete package.
What’s great? The beautiful restaurant
options. If you’re a yum cha fan, you must
try the lobster and scallop dumplings! They
are truly beautiful. The pool is amazing,
and the spa set-up just beckons!
What’s not so great: Because the hotel is
situated in the business district, it doesn’t
get the same striking panoramic cityscape
views that you get on the other side.
Editor’s tips: Opt for a ‘traditional Chinese’
other suites, it feels more ‘Hong Kong’.
Hotel Fouquet’s
Barriere
Paris
When it comes to five star hotels, Paris has an abundance of opulent properties, many
of which have been operating for decades. For a new hotel to compete, it needs a
certain ‘x-factor’. Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere may not be a name you’ve heard of, but it
has certainly caused a stir since it opened in 2006.
Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere
What’s great: The rooms and suites are
stunning. The location is right in the heart
of the action and the overall service level
and attention to detail is a step above
others in the city.
What’s not so great: Nothing significant
comes to mind. The room service is pretty
pricey, but hey, this is Paris.
Location wise, the hotel is perfectly
positioned on the corner of the Champs-
Élysées and Avenue George V, in the
heart of the designer shopping district.
Watch as crowds queue across the street
every morning, just to say they purchased
their Louis Vuitton handbag from the
Paris flagship store. Or for a spot of
people-watching, stroll along to one of
the many upmarket cafés for a strongly
brewed coffee and a freshly baked pastry.
Five minutes’ walk will have you at the
Arc De Triomphe; another fifteen, at the
Eiffel tower.
Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere is billed as a
21st century Parisian palace and, in that
respect, it certainly delivers. A classic
Haussmann era building has been cleverly
restored and combined with modern
structures, shapes and artistic flourishes.
The interiors are innovative, with splashes
of colour and bold design elements that
give a refined retro touch. The spaces are
all complemented by mood lighting that
creates a very chic ambience.
On the food and beverage offerings, the
hotel is home to Le Diane, an intimate
fine-dining restaurant serving innovative
combinations presented with typical
French flair. Fouquet’s Brasserie, one of
the most famous of all Paris brasseries,
located right on the Champs-Élysées, is
the centre piece of the property and since
1899 has attracted the greats of the film
industry. An experience not to be missed.
With this level of detail, it’s no surprise
that Hotel Fouquet’s Barriere is taking on
the best of the best, and succeeding.
Burj Al Arab
Dubai
When the various hotel associations want to bestow upon a hotel their highest
possible honour, they award it five stars. In a few exceptional cases, they go above.
In the case of The Burj, they gave it seven. Let’s be quite clear. There is no such thing
as a seven star hotel. But if there were, it would probably look something like the
Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
60 Your ultimate luxury and corporate travel resource.
Your ultimate luxury and corporate travel resource. 61

Towering 321 metres above the turquoise
waters of the Persian Gulf, the world’s
tallest and most shamelessly luxurious
hotel perches on its tiny man-made island
like the billowing sail of an enormous
yacht. Perhaps it’s no coincidence then
that the Burj has become a symbol of
the winds of change blowing through
Dubai, an increasingly popular stopover
destination as Emirates widens its
worldwide network. At any given time,
two-level suites are occupied, proving that
visitors recognise a compelling proposition
when they see one. And spectacular really
is the only word to describe it. Enter your
suite and you are completely swept away
by the most luxurious décor imaginable.
Everywhere you look intense colours
and luxurious surfaces are accented by
gold, gold and still more gold. Truth be
told, everything inside the suite that is
gold in colour is gold in substance. That
depending on your suite, could include a
door or the mirror above your bed!
Rest assured, this is no über cool Hudson
or minimalist W Hotel. Instead Arabian
Nights and Vegas meet head on with a
level of opulence so overpowering, you
have to blink a few times after entering
a room. The lashings of gold and swirling
kaleidoscope of colours are anything but
subtle, but the Burj brings them together
with such flair and on such a scale that
it works brilliantly. Ranging in size from
169m 2 to 780m 2 , each suite features lavish
living and dining areas and a state-of-theart
entertainment system.
Despite the fact that virtually everything in
the room, including the lighting, curtains
and air conditioning, can be operated by
remote control, your suite comes with
the services of a dedicated butler who
can cater to your every whim at any hour
concierge on every floor so you can check
discreetly into your suite and if you need
to venture out you also have access to a
chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce Phantom.
The Burj offers a choice of eight
restaurants and lounges, each with its
own theme, superstar chef and authentic
menu. You can take the virtual submarine
voyage to Al Mahara for superb seafood
surrounded by a magnificent aquarium
or take the elevator to the Sky View Bar
at sunset, for a spectacular view of the
Dubai harbour and Palm Island. Then
there’s Al Muntaha, Arabic for ‘the
ultimate’ or ‘the highest’ – which at 200
metres above the Arabian Gulf offers
a view matched only by its modern
European cuisine. You can also choose to
dine at any of the lounges or restaurants
at neighbouring Jumeriah International
properties; The Jumeriah Beach Hotel or
Your stay at the Burj also entitles you
to use of the Assawan Spa & Health
Club on the 18th floor with magnificent
views over the Gulf. Treatment rooms,
hydrotherapy baths, oriental massage,
stand-up solarium, sauna, steam rooms
and Jacuzzi, two swimming pools, squash
court, two fully equipped fitness studios
and an aerobics floor are all yours for the
taking. You’ll also want to make full use
of your unlimited access to Wild Wadi -
a continuous water park on Jumeriah
property where one ride runs seamlessly
into another for hours of entertainment
leaving you without a chance to dry off.
Unsurprisingly the Burj has plenty of
celebrities, but staff tend to be tight-lipped
about their famous guests. However they
will let on that Tiger Woods hit golf balls
off the heliport into the Persian Gulf for
a photo opportunity. It turns out that the
Burj is one of Tiger’s favourite stops on
What’s great: The fact that the hotel is all
attentive and professional we have ever
experienced. They will always greet you
before you get a chance to... it’s one of
their hallmarks.
of the day or night. There is a private
What’s not so great: If we had to fault
something, the pool could have been
slightly more grand.
Editor’s tip: If you’re only staying for 2-3
Emporium Hotel
Brisbane
What’s great: We loved the large balcony
off our Emporium Suite – a pleasant space
to enjoy Brisbane’s warm climate. We also
loved that that GHD stylers are available
on loan.
What’s not so great: There’s not much we
didn’t like. However, we thought that the
living area in the Emporium Suite was not
separated or as spacious as we would
have experienced.
It’s hard not to get excited when you arrive at the Emporium Hotel, Brisbane’s hippest
place to stay. Located in a chic precinct, there are stylish boutiques, award-winning
restaurants and specialty food stores only a few steps away. It’s a great place to spend
an indulgent weekend.
The foyer is a feast for the eyes, with bold
reds and golds displayed in contrasting
textures. The signature E motif is eyecatching,
as is the hand-blown red glass
chandelier that has a prominent position
in this luxurious space. The staff appear
to be extremely passionate about working
here, and they definitely add an extra
dimension to your stay.
Everything about the décor is carefully
considered. The use of texture flows
into the studio suites, which are richly
furnished with opulent cushions, large
wall mirrors and subdued lighting. There
are eight pillow options to choose from,
ranging from a Satin Beauty pillow that
relieves the pressure on facial bones to
one that professes to reduce snoring.
The Emporium’s cocktail bar is a
wonderland of antiques from around the
world, like the German chandelier from
a castle in Europe. The cocktail menu
showcases the bartender’s specialties
and classical recipes with a modern
twist. With so many delicious creations
to choose from, you can be forgiven for
making several visits during your stay.
When it’s time to work off those surplus
calories, the hotel caters to your needs
with a high-tech gym and sauna. And if
you need a day’s rest from shopping or
exploring in the city, the 15m rooftop
saltwater pool is the perfect place to relax
and chill.
The Emporium Hotel is sophisticated,
elegant and leading edge. The creators
have thought long and hard about how
to exceed their guests’ expectations, and
these little touches definitely make your
We were impressed with this hotel from the moment we stepped into the
lobby. The Hilton Sydney is the result of a major reconstruction from rooftop
to basement, with a plethora of hotel industry awards to attest to the quality
of its amenities. The total effect is captivating.
The attentiveness of the reception staff
set us up nicely for what was to come.
The reconstruction extended to the entire
culture and mindset of the establishment -
the attention to detail is outstanding.
Our room was such a relaxation haven,
it was hard to leave. The designer had
thought of everything and incorporated
contemporary style with function. This
was evidenced throughout the space, for
example, the combination of daylight sun
filters with block-out blinds.
The glass brasserie provided a unique
dining experience throughout the day
and night with a 13-metre floor to ceiling
glass wall that frames a captivating view of
the heritage Queen Victoria Building. An
enlightening space to start the evening
is in the glass wine bar. This is a real
attraction with its three-dimensional wine
experience offering over 10,000 expertly
chosen bottles. Later in the night, a visit
Reethi Rah
The Maldives
The Maldives – now there’s a captivating name that suggest luxury! Then add the
One&Only group and you have the makings of a truly exceptionally resort. Reethi Rah,
which means ‘Beautiful Island’, is one of the largest in the region. An exotic paradise
where no amount of money has been spared to create perhaps the world’s ultimate
resort. And so on to the luxury villas…
furnishings. This is a great aspect and it’s
good to know that even the base category
is fashioned around the concept of a lodge
and comprises distinctly different dining
areas. Cuisine is a fusion of Far Eastern,
Arabian tents suspended from the
palms. This is Fanditha, a Middle Eastern
restaurant in a fabulous location at the
the larger reef sharks that often venture
here in the evening. The menu is creative
and delicious with an outstanding
expensive. Inside, extra height is achieved
by the 45-degree pitched ceilings. The
Middle Eastern and Mediterranean with
absolute freshness.
Category: Beach Resort
The choice is beachfront or over-water,
with the cost dependent on size and
extras such as your own private pool. A
mere 92 beach villas share 12 beaches.
We loved the way that the over-water
villas were designed in clusters of four, in
contrast to many other resorts where they
are built in long rows out into the water.
This extended jetty system offers little
privacy and can also spoil the view if you
choose the land option.
Each villa’s interior, regardless of size
and cost, shares the same quality of
décor is Asian-influenced with a strong
use of vivid colours that combine perfectly
with the dark timber.
Floor to ceiling glass sliding doors in the
bedroom reveal the most extraordinary
private pool. Infinity in style on every side
and designed to be at the same level as
the villa floor, it extends over and rises
above the beach resulting in the perfect
horizon effect. The above ground shell
of the pool is constructed of charcoal
lava rock and river stone, which makes a
striking contrast against the white sand of
the surrounding beach.
There are three restaurants on Reethi Rah,
the largest being Reethi Restaurant, which
cellar houses some 18,000 bottles of the
world’s finest wines.
Adjacent to this is the poolside Rah Bar
that also serves light meals and snacks.
The Rah Bar is designed on three levels
allowing various angles to view the
ocean and infinity pool. This astonishing
structure is an oversized lap pool that
extends way out into the lagoon. At the
furthest point, rest on a sunken double
width stone lounger, or lay back and feel
like you’re floating in the middle of the
lagoon. This pool is pure magic.
Picture a beach scene with Persian carpets
on the sand, day beds, giant cushions,
white sails draped over the trees and
and tie required here - or shoes for that
matter. In the evening, vintage brass
hurricane lamps, large candles and crystal
chandeliers illuminate the arena, and
carved colonial chairs, shisha pipes and
magnums of pink Champagne create the
ultimate shipwreck vista. This restaurant
must be experienced, but take note, go
with an appetite, as the servings here
are substantial.
Tapasake is the resort’s signature
Japanese restaurant and is also positioned
over-water. Like the Reethi Restaurant, it
has numerous seating areas within the
one restaurant and I especially liked the
outside terrace with its long communal
granite slab table - perfect for watching
Providing the most luxurious of
surroundings is not nearly enough to
satisfy today’s discerning traveller. Too
often the holiday experience is marred
by inept service. With a staggering ratio
of over 600 staff servicing only 130
villas, the service is what you would
expect of a One&Only property. Friendly,
uncompromising and attentive to any
request, no matter how outlandish. We
came to One&Only Reethi Rah with
high expectations. This opulent resort
is purportedly the world’s finest and
ultimately we tend to agree. This property
ticks all the boxes and easily deserves the
multitude of awards that have become
synonymous with its name.
Soneva Kiri
Thailand
An eco masterpiece
Soneva Kiri is the latest offering from the Six Senses Group, a world leader and pioneer
in the development of ultra exclusive, luxury resorts with a difference. Each and
every property is carefully conceived and meticulously crafted to be as eco sensitive
as possible with minimal disruption to the natural landscape. It really is sustainable
tourism at its very best, which is summed up perfectly in their SLOW LIFE philosophy –
Sustainable – Local – Organic – Wholesome – Learning – Inspiring – Fun – Experiences.
Now if you’re starting to think that this is all sounding very green and potentially
lacking in the luxury department, then I’d like to introduce you to Soneva Kiri, one of
the finest resorts on the planet.
72 Your ultimate luxury and corporate travel resource.

With luxury travel, the difference is quite
often in the small detail and with Soneva,
every detail, no matter how minute, seems
to have been taken care of.
Upon arrival at Bangkok airport you are
ushered through customs formalities and
invited to relax pre-flight in a private room
within the Thai Airways Business Class
Lounge. Onboard the resort’s custom
fitted private plane, you can stretch out in
large, first class-like reclining seats for the
comfortable one-hour flight to the island.
Situated on the east coast of Thailand in the
Koh Chang Marine National Park, Koh Kood
is Thailand’s fourth largest island and unlike
the tourist hotspots of Phuket and Koh
Samui, thankfully as yet remains unspoilt
and undeveloped. This is how you imagine
Thailand to be and the ideal location for
such a special property.
I particularly liked the ‘No News, No Shoes’
policy, and was reminded of this as we were
met by our personal Ms Friday (butler Soneva
style) boarding the classic wooden powerboat
for the five minute crossing from the
airfield to the resort. This is a very exclusive,
expensive resort, but luxury does not have
to be all pomp and ceremony. Here the
environment is relaxed, casual and without
pretence. Such a welcome change from some
rather than feeling relaxed can sometimes
leave you feeling slightly uncomfortable and
are certainly not conducive to my idea of an
enjoyable family holiday.
The service delivery and management
style is both charming and discreet while
at the same time uncompromising in its
commitment to cater to your every whim.
The resort is set over 150-acres of untouched
rainforest and private sandy coves with
only forty-two over-sized villas, and for the
ultimate indulgence, twelve spectacular
Private Residences. This level of space
allows for the ultimate in privacy and even
nearing full capacity, Soneva feels anything
but. Staged like a Peter Jackson big budget
movie set, grand wooden structures in an
eclectic mix of bold designs raise from the
tropical terrain with arched sail like roofing
peaking through the jungle canopy, giving
the only hint of activity below.
Entry level accommodation here means
250m 2 of living space, large private
pool, personal butler and private buggy.
Our modest home was a hill-top Private
Residence. A five-bedroom goliath of truly
epic proportions, occupying a staggering
1200m 2 and yours to purchase for
US$6,000,000 and change.
Five ensuited bedrooms, fully-equipped
treatment area, pool table, multiple indoor
and outdoor living spaces, Bose indoor/
outdoor sound system, multitude of 42”
LCDs… I think I’d like to request an extension
to our visit, six months should suffice.
The interiors are the epitome of paredback
luxury, simple, but sophisticated.
An inspired, clever design of bamboo and
sustainable undressed woods, including
outside decks of sand-blasted New Zealand
Pine. Every possible element is constructed
with a renewable product, right down to
the bamboo spouting.
Apart from the sheer size, the other thing
that strikes you is the swimming pool.
Worthy of being the main resort pool, here
it is your personal one – well two to be
exact. The main being infinity edged and
20 metres in length, hugging the hillside
with views out to the gulf. The second
pool, in addition to enclosing the master
bedroom, acts as the catchment area for
the two-storey waterslide, (yes, waterslide)
that weaves it’s way down from the tree
house which, in this instance housed our
two small children. As you can imagine, this
proved to be a wonderland as far as they
were concerned and has now set totally
unrealistic expectations.
In addition, The Den, a kids club like no
housed in a spectacular building, designed
in the shape of a giant manta-ray and
constructed entirely of timber and bamboo
by absolute master craftsmen. Perched up
high, it appears to magically hover above
the forest, affording magnificent views and
once inside, it really is a dream area for kids
to explore and have fun.
The choice and quality of cuisine is as you
would expect in a property of this calibre,
beginning with the aptly named Dining
Room serving breakfast and dinner with
relaxed Thai-style kantoke seating. Other
options include exquisite fine dining at The
View, a private wine-matched degustation
at the subterranean wine cellar with more
than five hundred labels represented.
Casual Asian inspired fare is also available
to have at the pool bar or lunch at the
resort’s stunning private beach complete
with wood fired and tandoori ovens and
a funky sunken seating area in the sand.
For something truly unique, try Thai dining
inside a treetop ’dining pod’ high above the
rainforest where you are elevated to lofty
heights by a system of safety winches and
fed courtesy of a flying waiter – harnessed
to a zip-line.
Another highlight for me was a romantic
sunset cruise to nearby Benz, a wonderful
Thai restaurant headed by accomplished
classic wooden Thai structure stilted and
hidden amongst the mangroves fringing the
Klong Yai Kee River… this is a serious must
do. The kid’s favourites however would have
to be the resort’s ice cream parlour with
over sixty flavours to try, closely followed
by ‘Ever Soneva So Chocoholic’, a chocolate
room featuring fair trade, gourmet
chocolates… again yours to enjoy without
charge whenever the temptation arises.
Soneva is all about creating experiences and
what better way to spend an evening than
watching a classic movie under the stars.
Cinema Paradiso is a large purpose built,
impressive natural auditorium complete with
a man made lake as backdrop to the terraced
seating of super-sized comfy loungers, day
beds complete with mandatory hot buttered
popcorn washed down with a cocktail from
the cinema bar – I’ll take the Thai spiced
Mojito thanks.
If all this eating and lazing around has your
body in need of repair or some additional
pampering is required, then a visit to their
renowned Six Senses Spa could be in order.
All in all, Soneva Kiri is a remarkable
property and definitely one to put on your
“must visit” list. Plaudits must be given to
the owners for undertaking such a wellconceived
development, and for doing
so in such a responsible fashion. An eco–
luxe resort that sets the standards for all
Siem Reap, Cambodia
Trisara
Phuket, Thailand
Originally named Villa Apsara, this property was originally built in 1962 for King
Trisara means ‘third garden in heaven’. A real sanctuary, this resort offers a mix of
Sihanouk. Stately guests, rebel coups and military occupations all preceded the
hotel and residential villas that are nestled amongst lush tropical foliage facing the
Aman resort group purchasing the 12-suite property in 2002. A fascinating history,
crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea.
What’s great: Before you step foot in
Amansara, the staff have already prepared
an itinerary for your trip. There’s always the
top 10 list of Amansara recommendations
in Siem Reap, so if you don’t like what is
proposed it can be changed – or you don’t
have to do anything at all!
What’s not so great: The library has a great
range of Cambodian books in the library,
but it would be good to see more local
music among the cds selection.
Editor’s tip: Make the effort to adhere to
Amansara’s itinerary suggestions and get
up at the crack of dawn – you can always
to be sure, but how does it measure up as a resort in the 21st century?
First impressions are serene. The villas’
earthy wall colours are carried beyond the
floor-to-ceiling glass and to the outside
courtyard, where a water garden enhances
the adjacent pool’s quiet beauty. It’s not
hard to transition into relaxation mode.
Early morning starts are common in Siem
Reap. As daunting as a 5am wake-up may
seem, Amansara delivers an early morning
enticement: fresh fruit salad, yoghurt,
pastries and most importantly, coffee.
Amansara has an entire list of exploration
tours. These range from the art of Khmer
cooking to visiting Sangkheum, a centre
improving the lives of neglected children
partially through the support of local
businesses like Amansara.
After our morning adventure we return to
Amansara as the rampant humidity kicks
in. This is when the resort‘s three pools
lap pools for a dunk in our secluded villa
pool. Of course, such vigorous exercise
only enhances one’s appetite.
Amansara’s circular restaurant has the
atmosphere of a family home, accentuated
by coliseum-style rock pillars. After
sampling Chef Jonathan Phillips’ amok trei
(fish curry), chicken and banana blossom
salad, and Khmer omelette with roasted
duck, we agree there’s no need to switch
to the western menu options.
By the final morning the spa seems
the appropriate place to complete the
Amansara experience. Four large rooms
are available for treatments, which
include massage from a blind therapist
to a women-only ‘Apsara’ steam, scrub,
wrap and mask – which by all reports is
heavenly. There’s simply no better way to
return your body to the royal bliss you felt
The attention to detail here is outstanding,
from the stunning beauty of the property
in general to the use of space and the
discrete and attentive service. Each
villa features a private horizon pool
overlooking the ocean.
You could choose to stay put in your villa
and enjoy the room service or personal
chef who will come and cook up a BBQ
feast right by your poolside. Alternatively,
if you do manage to force yourself to
leave your private sanctuary, you won’t
be disappointed with the dining selection
at the adjacent restaurant. Everything
from aromatic southern Thai curries to
Bangkok-style noodles is available from
the extensive Thai menu. Or if you’d
prefer, you can choose from the Western
selection that was designed by renowned
Australian chef Neil Perry from Sydney’s
Because of the layout of the resort and the
relative distance between the villas and
amenities, Trisara offers a buggy service.
The behind-the-scenes co-ordination is
so precise that the staff member at your
drop-off point will always greet you by
name when you disembark.
Located close to several championship
golf courses, including the exclusive
Blue Canyon course which is just fifteen
minutes away, Trisara also has two
Plexipave tennis courts and access to a
top-class selection of luxury motor yachts
and launches. You’ll never be short of
outdoor pursuits.
When you stay here, you’ll truly unwind in
peaceful seclusion. The creators of Trisara
certainly thought of everything from the
expected to the unexpected, which allows
this resort to sit at a level of excellence
What’s great? The villa air-conditioning
was whisper silent. The à la carte breakfast
menu as opposed to the usual hotel buffet.
The fresh complimentary cookies and
pistachio nuts that accompany the tea and
coffee facilities.
What’s not so great: We didn’t walk as
much due to the efficient buggy service at
your doorstep!
Editor’s tip: Look out for the herbed eggwhite
omelette and coconut waffles on
the breakfast menu – delicious! You don’t
need to take any music or reading material
What’s great? Every villa has a personal
butler. Little touches like the Aloe Vera
gel, after-sun shampoo and wet swimsuit
a list of frequently asked for items such as
earplugs, scales and ice cube delivery time!
What’s not so great: I’ve been racking my
brain but I just can’t think of anything.
I can’t hold it back any longer – a huge
grin forces its way through as I realise I’ve
reached heaven on earth.
Next to grab attention was the 246m 2
infinity-edged pool complete with water
slide. A massive open-air living and dining
opted for an outing on a traditional local
boat and observed at close range the
treatments they offer. The spa here did
not disappoint with a Fusion massage
achieving this. The next time we feel like
getting away from it all, this hideaway
retreat will always be top of mind.
Ayana Resort
Bali
If you’re thinking serious luxury then Ayana Resort delivers world-class quality and
impeccable style.
We arrived at midnight so the full grandeur of the surroundings was not evident until
the next morning. We had chosen to stay in one of the 38 premium Cliff Villas that
were introduced to add a more contemporary feel and sleek design to complement
the existing 47 villas. The Cliff Villa grounds are very impressive and cover six hectares
in the secluded western side of the resort.
The compound consists of an exclusive check-in lobby area, the very cool lotusshaped
restaurant Dava, the adjacent Martini Club, private library and the funky C-Bar
that overlooks the stunning four-tiered Cliff Villa pool. The vibrant violet coloured
cushions of the double-sized loungers made a striking contrast to the natural stone
pool surrounds, the azure water of the pool and the white flowers of the hanging
trees. All in all, a magical setting.
What’s great: So many things, but I
particularly liked Dava and the Martini Bar,
the Cliff Villa facilities and special mention
to the dramatic Ocean Beach Infinity Pool,
built into the side of a cliff, with the surf
just metres below.
What’s not so great: It’s a small walk or
buggy ride to get to the private beach,
but with such an array of great pools this
wasn’t an issue for me. Also, rooms in the
A swimming choice was the dramatic
Ocean Beach Pool, built into the cliff
face and located just metres above the
beach of Jimbaran Bay. No need to bring
any accessories here, because sunscreen
lotion, pre-loaded iPods, complimentary
chilled fruits, sorbets and mineral water
were waiting. Of course the poolside team
are also more than happy to accommodate
any of your other beverage requirements.
Mojito anyone?
Each villa is positioned in its own walled
compound and this, coupled with the
staggered layout of the villas, provides the
ultimate in privacy. The villa exteriors are
traditional in style with pitched, thatched
roofing and solid plaster walls. Inside they
are opulent and timeless – think Armani
meets classic Balinese.
The villa layout consists of three main living
spaces: lounge, master bedroom and
massive bathroom, all of which look out
to the lava stone infinity pool with floating
pavilion and then across the 20 metres
of manicured lawn out to the cliff edge
and ocean. Each room has large, double
glass sliding doors making the most of the
views and enhancing the indoor/outdoor
flow. Large dark wooden panelled double
doors, framed by beautifully carved
sandstone, lead you into the master
bedroom and the romantic canopied
bed laid with superior cotton linen. The
bathroom features a step-up marble bath
for two, positioned to take advantage of
the ocean views.
Good food is a vital component of any
great holiday and the Ayana definitely
excels here. With 12 restaurants, cafés
and lounge areas, you are positively
spoilt for choice. We enjoyed Dava, the
resort’s signature restaurant with a strong
focus on local seasonal ingredients,
prepared in a modernistic Asian style.
Other restaurants include Padi, for classic
Thai with a modern twist, and Kisik, the
most informal of the three, cut into the
side of a cliff and serving fresh seafood
grilled to order. All three impressed with
their service, cool ambience and food
quality. The presentation at Dava was a
real highlight – well done to Dean and the
exceptional front of house team.
On the spa front, the Ayana includes one
of the world’s most awarded destination
spas, including the 22,000m 2 Thalasso
Spa Complex, reflexology centre, beauty
salon and the world’s largest Aquatonic
Seawater Therapy pool. So impressive
are the facilities that they’re worthy of a
feature all of their own.
In summary, this resort ticked the three
big boxes: stunning facilities, fantastic
food and absolutely impeccable service.
We wouldn’t hesitate to return and loved
everything about our experience.
Hotel Caruso
Belvedere
Ravello, Italy
Ravello is unquestionably one of the most stunning destinations on the entire Amalfi
Coast. Occupying an absolutely prime position, built into the cliffs of this remarkable
historic settlement, is a former 11th century palace and one of the world’s great hotels,
Hotel Caruso Belvedere.
The boutique nature of the hotel, with only
48 rooms and suites, affords its guests the
ultimate in privacy and service. In keeping
with the uniqueness of the property,
many of the rooms and suites vary in
size and design. Rooms are spacious and
are beautifully appointed in a traditional
Italian style.
One of the highlights was the overall
quality of the cuisine. Guests can choose
between two restaurants, both affording
peerless vistas of the Amalfi Coast. The
Belvedere on the terrace is perfect for
sunny days and warm evenings, while
the Caruso Restaurant, boasts a beautiful
outdoor terrace and elegant indoor dining
room. Featuring magnificent frescoes
from the 18th century, the hotel bar is a
perfect spot for a pre dinner drink. The
Poolside Bar & Restaurant beside the
hotel’s much photographed infinity pool,
was a personal favourite and where I
enjoyed the best pizza I have ever had.
Opulent hotel, magical location,
outstanding cuisine. But the other key
ingredient of a truly unforgettable
experience is the people. Plaudits must
be given to the charismatic leadership
skill of General Manager, Franco Girasoli
who seems born for such a role. Service
is precise and discreet without the
forced formality and stiffness of some
establishments in this quality category.
It’s also probably one of the main reasons
why so many guests fall in love with this
property, returning year after year.
Singita
Lebombo
South Africa
Staying at a luxury lodge in South Africa, there are a couple of rules to abide by.
These include ‘no walking alone at night’ - lodge security must accompany you in
case of an unexpected close encounter - and ‘keep your suite doors bolted at all
times’ - the baboons are notoriously clever at opening the doors, raiding the mini
bar and having a party!
Singita Lebombo
at a glance
Category: Resort
Suite reviewed: Luxury Suite
What’s great: The relaxed ‘organic’ yet
luxurious feel of the suites. The food and
attention to detail by staff. The exhilarating
game drives through the African
wilderness. The sightings of animals
wandering through or past the resort.
What’s not so great: We didn’t see the
volume of game that we’d hoped for but
we did see a week-old giraffe and the
elusive honey badger – incredible.
The ambience of our suite would best
be described as ‘restful and soothing’.
Designed around the theme of a ‘luxury
eagle’s nest’, the panoramic views were
enhanced by floor to ceiling glass. A
canopy roof of latticed branches, hanging
beads behind the bed and an all-natural
colour palette further achieved this.
The absence of solid walls in the suite
meant that the various living spaces were
separated rather innovatively through
intuitive design and the use of light fabrics.
At night, mesh walls fold down to create
a tent-like space around the bed, but also
act as mosquito netting. There are also a
number of different ways to configure the
room, and the creators had this in mind.
They wanted the spaces to be versatile
and transform as the guest desires. As an
example, the day bed on the outdoor deck
is ‘tented’ at night, complete with netting,
flashlight and warm blankets so that you
can enjoy sleeping under the stars of the
dark African sky.
There is an organic feeling about the
Lebombo structures and we discovered
that their building philosophy was to
‘touch the ground lightly’. The idea is
that no aspect of the construction should
impose on the site now or in the future.
This extends from the removable buildings
through to the floating walkways. Being
environmentally responsible is a theme
that eco-conscious hotels and resorts are
adopting, and Singita is no exception.
Being situated on 15,000 hectares of
natural wilderness and home to many
species of flora and fauna, Singita’s
rangers and trackers are the gateway
to exploring the region. Rising early for
sunrise, you soon fall into anticipation of
the possibilities that the game drive that
day might bring. The tracker and ranger
work together to locate whatever may be
in the area, whether it be giraffes, lions,
rhinos, zebras or elephants. We felt in
good hands since our tracker, Glass, is only
one of 14 senior trackers in the country,
an achievement that is by invitation only.
With a warm wind blowing though our
hair, eyes scanning the terrain and the
relentless sun beating down, there is a
sense of adventure and freedom driving
in our custom-made Land Rover that just
can’t be found in the city.
“There…” pointed Glass, his keen eyes
spotting what we’d come to see way
before the rest of us: a pride of five
lions being playful with each other and
then flopping to rest and preen prior to
their afternoon prowl. After 30 hours
of travelling half way around the world,
this is what we’d come to see; this is
why people are drawn to the African
wilderness. Whether it’s the drawcard
of the ‘Big Five’ or searching for a more
obscure and difficult to sight animal or
being there for the drama of the kill, Africa
has a wealth of living things interacting
with the environment that can normally
only be seen on television documentaries.
We were fortunate to sight many species
during our stay, including some that our
ranger got quite excited about, such as
the elusive honey badger and a week-old
giraffe still with umbilical cord.
Back to the lodge and honourable
mention must be made regarding the
cuisine. It’s superb in every way, from the
market-style breakfast to fine dining in
the evening. We also experienced a bush
dinner lit entirely with lamps - a beautiful
experience and so eloquently prepared.
Singita also houses an extensive wine
cellar, drawing from the premium and
private reserves that South Africa has
on offer. Their sommeliers are dedicated
to ensuring that each guest experiences
wines from the region that harmonise
with the chef’s creations - perfect for
getting a taste for South African vintages.
There’s a certain romanticism about
Africa: the wild harsh beauty of the
landscape, the young girls making beaded
jewellery and the indigenous animals
roaming freely are all part of it. And now
Singita Lemombo can be added to that
list. We notice a quote in the room from
Nelson Mandela, which reads, “There
is nothing like returning to a place that
remains unchanged to find the ways in
which you yourself have altered.”
Editor’s tip: Stay a night out on your deck
under the inky African night. Stargazing
while listening to the sounds of the
nocturnal animals you’ll remember forever.
This exclusive resort is nestled between the dramatic backdrop of a rugged
mountain landscape and the glistening blue waters of the Gulf of Oman.
The complex comprises three hotels - Al Waha, Al Bandar (both 5-Star) and
Al Husn (6-Star).
Al Husn means ‘The Palace’ and it certainly
lives up to its name. The entrance greets
you with a wafting aroma of incense.
Following that, the presence of still water,
a high atrium ceiling and expansive space
in the lobby belies the plushly carpeted
hallways and the lavishly decorated
guestrooms that have secluded balconies
overlooking the resort or private beach.
Guest rooms are plushly furnished with
the kind of carpet that you sink your toes
into. The fabrics are in warm, rich colours
that complement sleek Arabian elements,
like the intricate lampshades and backlit
panels, creating a muted lighting effect.
The private balcony was of a good size,
complete with a comfortable lounge suite
(nice touch!) and Dedon table setting.
This resort is one where you could arrive
and not leave for several days because
of what it has to offer. Guests are able
to use the facilities at all of the hotels,
which include boutique shopping, six
restaurants, seven casual dining outlets
and pool bars, several pools, three private
beaches, the CHI spa and numerous land
and water activities.
Al Husn is elegant with attentive staff to
tailor your stay. Nothing appears to be too
much trouble. We definitely felt a sense
of ‘hush’ at Al Husn, compared with Al
Waha, which was more ‘hustle-bustle’. It
was very restful to return here after a day
out exploring. The quality of the food is
outstanding and complements the overall
exclusive feel of the property.
Eratap Beach Resort enjoys an idyllic position on its own mini peninsula, set
amongst tropical gardens. With just 12 villas, the place has a private and
exclusive feel, as if you have your own personal beach to relax on. All the villas
enjoy beachfront locations with panoramic views of the surrounding islands.
The buildings are constructed of painted
masonry with clean lines and good
attention to detail. Thatched roofs are
beautifully detailed and the use of quality
woods hints at indigenous Melanesian
style with a touch of Bali. It truly feels as if
you’ve arrived at the end of the road, with
relaxation at the top of the agenda.
As amicable as the hospitality may be, it’s
the natural setting that takes centre stage
at a beach resort. Eratap’s beach is simply
stunning, with a lagoon opening out
onto dozens of pristine islands. The resort
provides two long boats and the staff are
happy to take you on a cruise. Gaze at the
colourful coral reefs or take advantage of
the snorkelling gear provided to explore
the undersea world. Good surfing is
also available and if you fancy a spot of
fishing, that’s easy to arrange too.
Children are welcome at certain times of
the year and the resort makes an extra
effort to provide them with enriching
experiences. For instance, they’ll be
shown how to catch sardines off the
jetty and then taught how to make a
fire without matches to cook their catch
on the beach. It seems so simple, but as
every parent knows, these are the sorts
of experiences that live on in the memory.
We emerged from our stay at Eratap
Beach Resort with a real affection for
its understated charm. It’s just the sort
of luxury retreat that Vanuatu has been
crying out for. Best of all, it’s only three
hours – plus a 20-minute jungle drive –
from Auckland.
What’s great? Having access to snorkelling
equipment, reef shoes, ocean kayaks and
longboats with knowledgeable boatmen to
take you to neighbouring islands, the coral
reefs or on fishing excursions.
What’s not so great: The standard of the
food is very high and although there is a
daily specials board, if you are staying for
a length of time there can be a bit
of repetition.
Editor’s tips: Definitely make use of the
kayaks and longboats to go exploring
whether it be above or below the water.
“...candles flicker through
the darkness and the flares
along the waters edge
reflect in the infinity pool.”
Our villa was nestled in a volcanic rock
face, with private stairway access to the
white-sandy beach below. Furnishings
were ornately designed and reflected the
local culture through colour and style.
All rooms have air-conditioning. The
bathroom, a key feature of the villa, was
marble finished, with a shower facing in
to an enclosed private garden (which also
included an outdoor monsoon shower for
a luxurious treat at the end of the day).
Of special interest were a complimentary
locally made pareo and the Bvlgari
cosmetics provided for guests’ enjoyment.
The fresh flowers, picked daily, added to
the tropical atmosphere.
As with any five-star resort, there is
a comprehensive room service menu
available, but the restaurant is in such a
stunning location it would be a shame not
to savour the views. Situated above the
infinity pool and looking out across the
lagoon through swaying palm trees, it’s fair
to say it holds the most impressive dining
view on the island. A local band plays each
evening, the wine list is comprehensive and
the food is of a high standard.
island life, the cocktail list is hard to resist
and a perfect complement to lounging by
the pool on an exquisite tropical island.
While the beach by the resort is safe and
suitable for snorkelling, as with most lagoon
beaches it is reasonably shallow. Kayaks
and snorkelling gear are available for hire
and it is well worth heading out beyond the
shallows to experience the natural beauty
of the marine life. We were fortunate to
see giant clams just a few hundred metres
offshore and the friendly tropical fish
provide hours of entertainment.
Further out in the lagoon is a diver’s
paradise. Accessible by small boat,
the water is pristine and the brightest
turquoise and full of incredible marine life.
No visit to Aitutaki would be complete
without experiencing the white-sandy
beaches in the middle of the atoll and the
picture-perfect `Robinson Crusoe’ islands.
With several tour companies offering a
range of options, the staff at the resort
will recommend one and make all the
necessary arrangements.
For comfort and style and a holiday in an
unspoilt piece of paradise, Pacific Resort,
Aitutaki is an ideal choice. The resort has
won a host of awards, including 2011 Best
Small Hotel (Asia Pacific), 2011 Best Small
Boutique Island Resort – World Travel
The Te Manava Luxury Villas & Spa complex (managed by Pacific Resort Hotel Group)
consists of two remodelled garden villas; each with a private pool, five villa suites and
four beachfront villas, where the luxury level goes up a notch.
Entry to the Presidential Villa is through
a hand-carved wooden gate, which
opens onto a stunning walled courtyard
reminiscent of a luxury Balinese villa. The
attention to detail and use of quality
materials is instantly apparent with
the inlaid marble tiling and the large,
L-shaped private pool that borders the
covered walkway to the villa. It’s fully tiled
in gorgeous natural river stone with lava
rock edging.
The three-bedroom villa is built over
two levels and measures a capacious
560m 2 including courtyard and decks.
The exterior is a rendered plaster finish
with natural thatch roofing. Inside, this
place is beautifully fitted out and will
not disappoint even the most discerning
traveller. Cool polished marble flooring
combines beautifully with extensive use
of dark teak and native timbers. The
ground level contains a spacious openplan
dining area with seating for six and a
stylish lounge area with super size plasma
and Cambridge Audio (i.e. very high spec)
surround system.
We loved the interior furnishings,
especially the Indonesian inspired pieces
and the exquisite artwork. Ceilings are
over-height, creating a pleasant feeling
of space, while the woven, natural
style summons up a warm and inviting
ambience. Full-length wooden shutters
slide back to expose the prime, elevated
beachfront setting, with the lagoon
literally a few steps away.
The resort has won awards including 2011
International Hotel Awards Winner for ‘Best
New Small Hotel’ Asia Pacific (Construction
& Design) and World Travel Awards 2010
for World’s Leading Island Villas.
If you want to visit Rarotonga, and want
to do it in style, this is the place.
What’s great: The overall quality level of
the villa and outdoor entertaining areas as
well as the prime beachfront location on
probably the best lagoon on the island.
What’s not so great: The romantic covering
on the four-poster bed restricts a bit of
airflow from the ceiling fan that is located
directly above – easily fixed though.
Editor’s tip: Make sure you pay the little
extra to book one of the newer beachfront
Among the myriad of islands in the
Manamuca’s, the unusual and distinctive
topography of Vomo makes it easily
identifiable with its very flat land mass
permeated by a large mountain at its
centre. The island itself is blessed with
perhaps the best coastline in the region.
Long stretches of picture perfect beaches
and an enviable location for a resort. With
no other resort or village on the island,
Vomo is home to just 29 luxury villas and
two larger Private Residences. Vomo is
certainly an exclusive property and offers
the level of privacy that many luxury
travellers are looking for. But it’s not all
honeymooners here as Vomo is also the
only 5-star island resort in Fiji to welcome
kids year round. Fantastic for families,
this also adds a nice mix to the clientele
and eliminates what can sometimes be a
rather sterile environment at some ‘adultonly’
properties.
Our task was to experience the pure
luxury of The Residence, undoubtedly one
of the most impressive accommodation
offerings in the Pacific. A private
compound consisting of three separate
pavilions and occupying an acre of prime
beachfront, this certainly raises the bar
when it comes to island chic. The main
two bedroom villa measures in at a lofty
250m 2 with the other two villas containing
one bedroom a piece – perfect for a
special event, extended family or a group
of friends. Each shares the same design
traits with stunning interiors courtesy of
well known New Zealand designer, Martin
Hughes. The design team have managed
presented in perfectly sized portions
so you’re able to comfortably consume
three courses without feeling like a lie
down. The first night’s seafood selection
consisted of chilled jumbo prawns, freshly
flown in oysters, smoked salmon, walu
kokoda, marinated squid… and that’s just
“Service and food
offering is an integral part
of any five star holiday
where Vomo excels. With
for starters. Dining is either in the main
restaurant, poolside or in your villa.
Still on the food front, I also appreciated
the choices for the wee ones. Apart from
the usual suspects there were plenty of
healthier options and again the quality
was better than expected. Easy to see that
the General Manager and Executive Chef
both have kids!
For the active type, there are the usual
water sports on offer including some of the
finest snorkelling I have ever experienced
and just minutes from the shore. A small
air-conditioned gym housed in a quaint
schist stone chalet, all-weather floodlit
tennis court and unbelievably, a nine-hole
chip and putt golf course. Not exactly a
Vatulele
Fiji
Vatulele lies 32km south of Viti Levu, or an easy 25-minute flight from Nadi. The arrival
by seaplane was breathtaking. As we touched down on a picture postcard lagoon, the
only evidence of development was the striking architecture of our new home.
First impressions were unreservedly great.
I loved the uniqueness of the Santa Fe
architectural style of the resort, which
is quite different from other properties
in the region. The intense, natural wall
colours work perfectly in this tropical island
environment of lush green foliage, creating
a rustic feel with a serious amount of luxury
thrown in.
The island itself is rich in history and
surprisingly flat in terrain, with the highest
point being a mere 33.5 metres above sea
level. The landscape is also very different
from other islands I have visited in Fiji.
Vatulele has an abundance of volcanic
formations, which the resort has cleverly
incorporated into the design of the property.
My mission was to experience The Point
– the ultimate honeymoon destination,
and undoubtedly one of the finest
accommodation options on the planet.
This place is certainly something out of the
pages of ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous.’
Your buggy pulls up to a large set of
Balinese-style doors, from which a winding
path leads up to the villa’s impressive main
entrance. At 186m 2 over two levels, The
Point is spacious and also exceptionally well
laid-out, designed to take full advantage of
the incredible views – even from the toilet!
Generous outdoor areas include not one
but two private infinity pools. One infinity
pool is located directly off the lounge and
the other is an extremely private grotto
style horizon pool hidden down a private
pathway. Upstairs is home to the airy master
bedroom with five double length glass
doors, complete with barn-style shutters to
block out the morning light.
Cuisine is another key component of a
memorable holiday experience. With the
choice of private dining in a candle-lit wine
cellar, a romantic dinner for two on the
beach, a lobster picnic on a deserted island
or simply dining in the privacy of your own
luxury bure, Vatulele certainly impressed.
St. Regis
Bora Bora, Tahiti
Undoubtedly the finest resort in the South Pacific, St. Regis Bora Bora is a stunning allsuite
property at the high end of the 5-star rating. The newest upscale resort in Bora
Bora, it enjoys a prime position within the famous Bora Bora lagoon spanning 44 acres
and four separate motus. With 100 exquisitely designed villas, including the largest
and most impressive over-water villas in the South Seas, this is a large property and it’s
easy to see why it took more than three years to complete. An interesting architectural
aspect is that one of the resort owners is of Chinese origin and he wanted to ensure
the overall design was in keeping with the principles of Feng Shui.
lined with hand-woven pandanus and
floors of Malaysian yellow willow wood,
contrasted nicely with the rich dark wood
of Bora Bora’s camel-humped Mount
Otemanu. More importantly, the cuisine
did not disappoint. After dinner, a cocktail
being the half-day reef tour to get up
close with the stingrays and reef sharks –
not as scary as you would expect, and an
the oversized deck was the perfect spot
Arrival is via a private boat and the trip is
a mere 10 minutes from the airport. Bora
Bora is quite a sight to fly into and it’s also
a novel experience to touch down on a
small motu, collect your bags and then
walk out to a small wharf to board the
boat to your resort.
After the mandatory ice-cold towel and
tropical cocktail on arrival, we checked in
and were escorted to our over-water villa
by our private butler. Talk about the wow
factor: at 1550 square feet, these villas are
absolutely massive and easily twice the
size of many of the competing options.
And if that’s not palatial enough for you,
how about the 13,000 square foot Royal
Estate (a celebrity favourite – think Nicole
Kidman’s honeymoon). It’s a bargain at
just NZ$20,000 per night.
As well as being very generous in size, the
interior quality of the one-bedroom villas
did not disappoint. Cathedral ceilings,
to enjoy a quiet drink, perched over the
lagoon where the water is so tranquil and
luminescent, it looks too incredible to be
real. When it’s time for a swim, you can
simply step down to the lower deck and
dive straight into the lagoon.
When it comes to dining, St. Regis offers
three quality options, including the
only sushi restaurant in Bora Bora and
the Lagoon Restaurant, an over-water
fine dining experience and the 16th of
celebrity chef, Jean-George’s seventeen
restaurants around the globe. It’s hard to
imagine a more outstanding location for
a dining room, with the floor to ceiling
windows affording an uninterrupted view
“Arrival is via a private boat
and the trip is a mere 10
minutes from the airport.”
If you feel like a little spa pampering,
the Balinese-inspired 13,000 square foot
spa and fitness centre is located on its
own private island. After a quick workout
in one of the best-equipped resort gyms
I’ve seen, it was rather pleasant to walk
across the manicured lawn and dive
straight into the private lagoonarium that
surrounds the spa.
We took the opportunity to sample the
excursions on offer, with the stand-out
private bay owned by our guide’s uncle.
His home was a simple structure right on
the beach, and a more perfect location I
could not imagine. Our guide also proved
to be a great host as he spoilt us with a
refreshing selection of tropical fruits.
If you are escaping to Tahiti and looking
for the most luxurious resort, then it is
unquestionably the St. Regis. Yes, it is the
most expensive of the 5-star options, but
when you weigh up the massive villa size
and the overall quality of the property,
in our opinion it is well worth the extra
cost. The only slight negative, is that after
a visit here, future stays in other resorts
may disappoint in comparison!
Hamilton Island, Australia
Oceans
Mooloolaba, Australia
What’s great? Has to be the stand out
quality of the apartments and the prime
position on The Esplanade.
What’s not so great: No restaurant within
the complex but it’s so easy to pop out
the front door and check out the dining
options in the Oceans Precinct.
What’s great: The little things always
count, and with Qualia there are many.
The private picnic on a white sandy island,
just the two of you and a walkie talkie for
calling for pick-up, the overall service, the
complimentary buggy with every room
for getting around the resort and island...
ahhh, the list goes on and on.
Qualia is the most luxurious of all the properties on Hamilton Island. At 60 Pavilions, it’s
on the larger size, but you’d never know it. The secluded nature and layout of the resort
means you never see more than a handful of Pavilions at any one time.
We have had the opportunity to visit a
number of small properties in the past,
and Qualia shares the characteristics that
set the good ones apart from larger resortstyle
alternatives. Firstly, it has a style of
hovered above the floor supported only by
a shiny chrome pole. This minimal intrusion
of appliances never gets in the way of
the building’s tasteful interpretation
of modern Australian architecture.
Just one hour’s drive from Brisbane Airport you’ll find Mooloolaba on the aptly named
Sunshine Coast, offering a pleasant seaside ambience with water sports galore, not to
mention excellent shopping, dining and golf.
As you would expect from the Sunshine
Coast, there are plenty of hotels vying
for the tourist dollar along this sun-baked
strip of coast. But the only true 5-star
contender is Oceans Resort.
With a serviced apartment you get
the best of both worlds. Cleaning and
maintenance are all taken care of, but
you’ve got privacy and plenty of room to
relax and be yourself. You can choose the
service that is very intimate, focused and
essence of empowering staff means that
service becomes tight, quick and efficient.
Unforeseen issues are dealt with swiftly
It really feels as if Qualia has handpicked
the best staff from the best resorts in
the country. That’s probably not what
happened, but it certainly feels that way.
For us though, Qualia is all about the room.
Ours was a Windward Pavilion with a
sweeping cliff top view of the Whitsunday
Passage. In the lounge, an LCD screen
Combinations of local hardwoods give a
rich and warm ambience.
The bathroom is also a haven of chic
modern furniture and amenities. From the
Aesop Spa range of products to the tearshaped
incredible bath, everything was
arranged for maximum relaxation. A lot
of time was spent here gazing at the view
and contemplating the world.
With Qualia, there really is so much to
tell, it feels as if we’re only scratching the
surface. You’ll just have to go and see it
for yourself. It really is one of the most
complete resorts we have ever sampled.
The difference is apparent when you
take a look inside this all-suite property.
Polished limestone tiles, 180-degree
ocean views and Gaggenau-equipped
kitchens indicate a higher level of luxury
than your standard Australian hotel.
Overlooking the tranquil Gold Coast
Broadwater, the setting is ideal for a special
holiday, or even a business meeting with
a sense of occasion. The trip only takes
a few hours from Auckland, so you can
and check in at your convenience. If you
feel the need to add a touch of glamour,
you can arrange to arrive in style via luxury
yacht, limousine or Harley Davidson.
The décor is simply sumptuous, blending
classical and contemporary design with
true Versace flair. Framed photographic
work from Gianni and Donatella’s
collection line the hotel’s corridors.
The rooms are furnished with a special
range designed exclusively for the hotel
by the House of Versace in Milan. The
bathroom sinks are each made from a
single piece of marble, and the hotel
has no fewer than 28 pools. No other
hotel in Australia can offer Australia’s
highest qualified sommelier to conduct
an impromptu wine or Champagne
appreciation presentation as part of
your pre-dinner drinks. The cuisine is
always contemporary and complemented
by an expansive wine cellar. If you’ve
got something grand in mind, the La
Medusa ballroom is ideal. It’s suited to
larger conferences, roadshows, product
launches and exhibitions, as well as large
gala events.
Renowned chef and travel aficionado Peter Thornley
is our guide to the world of food. His passion for
new flavours and exotic ingredients has taken him
to some of the world’s top kitchens in New York,
Singapore, Japan, France and beyond.
Game for a challenge
Opening a new restaurant is always a calculated risk. This is the 5th time I’ve
opened one, which calls on every skill you have in the recipe book.
It requires the bringing together of people: Brian Campbell, world-class pastry
chef, and Dan Wards, Restaurant Manager. Two of the very best professionals
in the business. Then there’s all the other ingredients: food, beverage,
ambience, and all the things guests don’t get to see, such as dish washing,
who looks after the fine cutlery ($200 per set), bathroom products, choice of
music, storage, government regulations and local body compliance.
After all that work, what do you get? The answer is Wakatipu Grill – a brand
new restaurant situated in the five-star luxury of the Queenstown Hilton, on
the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
There are four very distinct seasons in Central Otago, each with
its own special calling card. The arrival of winter means plunging
overnight temperatures, snow on the peaks and clear still days.
Spring is signalled by blossom on wild roadside fruit trees, grown
from the many discarded fruit stones from summer trips years past.
Summer brings cherries, apricots and white, golden and blackboy
peaches. Autumn leaves are torn by the wind from the walnut
trees and blown into shaded corners against the schist stone walls
of the restaurant, swept up daily by waiters before lunch.
Each season brings its own basket of produce and providers to
my kitchen – an eclectic bunch of growers, fisherman, hunters
and passionate folk from all walks of life. Retired bankers from
New York, doctors, stockbrokers, farmers and even a smattering
of movie people and millionaires who have decided to put their
hands in the earth and kick the corporate world into touch.
People like the gentleman farmer who happened to see me in
the restaurant before it opened. He was walking along the lake,
knocked on the door and invited himself in for a chat. “You must
be the chef,’” he said. (The fact that I was in my whites was a bit
of a giveaway.)
My caller had a proposition. “Are you going to put swede on the
menu? I’ve got 44 acres on the farm.” I told him that once we’d
had two or three good, hard frosts, I would put them on the
menu. “You know a thing or two about swedes, then,” was his
bemused reply. “I grew up on a farm,” I said. “Bit of a flash place
you’ve got here. My swedes would look good on the menu.”
So now, every Monday, there is a 20kg bag of swede leaning
against the door of the restaurant. No invoice, note, or any
acknowledgement of origin, but I am hearing stories of sheep
being fed on five-star swedes in Otago. I just know he will be
knocking on the door with five-star lamb come spring. This is
typical of the growers and producers of central Otago.
Having such magnificent produce to work with, it would be a
shame to hide it from the world. Our kitchen is open, with the
most stunning grill and rotisserie in full view of the guests. This
has many benefits, chief of which is that I am able to engage
with guests and they with me.
What is not expected is a deer hunter walking in with his prize
draped on his shoulders – fur, antlers, the full Bambi. The
restaurant went silent. “Where do you want him? I shot him up
in the Gibbston and it’s taken me all day to hump him out. God, I
need an Armagnac, followed by a bloody good pinot.”
With a 52 Delord Armagnac and Valli 2008 Bannockburn Pinot
Noir, he sunk into the outdoor pinot pit with its stunning views
over the lake. The blazing fire makes this a popular place all day
for drinks and tapas, from lunch through to the late hours. Guns
are securely stored in the hotel gunroom.
Wild deer is just the beginning. Bendigo rabbit, hare, pheasant,
partridge, boar and Mount Cook salmon are also available right
on my back door. A few hours away on the coast, we have blue
cod, Bluff and Glory Bay oysters, little neck clams, curly willow
whitebait, hake, sole, grouper, langoustine, or scampi as it is
more commonly known, from the Auckland Islands.
The last time I had visited central Otago was some 20 years ago.
My then wife, Jayne, and I drove over the Crown Range on a
motorbike. This notorious road links Wanaka to Queenstown
across the mountains. It was gravel back then – suitable for
stock trucks and the adventurous only; with potholes so big you
drove into them and out the other side. Now sealed, it is a mustdrive
road to Queenstown, offering superlative views over the
mountains and Lake Wakatipu.
Jayne, a very petite English girl, was used to more classy modes of
transport. She was not best pleased with me but I had promised
a stay at the Wakatipu Hilton. (Twenty years ago my version of
the Hilton was the camping ground where the now five-star
Hilton stands). A tent with snug sleeping bags, dinner prepared
over the fire, with good local wine, rabbit, romaine lettuce, peas,
pancetta and dessert. I will never forget the best peaches and
apricots I have tasted anywhere in the world, bought from a
roadside stall. Cut in half, their stones were returned to the soil
to provide blossoms in years to come. That was my Hilton 20
years ago; it is my Wakatipu Grill at the Hilton 20 years later. Life
is like a menu.
Greece
Each issue, we take a look at a foreign culture and point out a few pitfalls for the unwary.
Before you start
The Greek economy is characterised by large conglomerates
run by dynastic families. Greek society is therefore extremely
relationship-oriented and having the ‘right’ contacts is
essential in order to successfully conduct business.
Business structures in Greece are strictly hierarchical which
is reflected in a directive and authoritative leadership style,
however, women are treated relatively equal at all levels.
Never
Never talk about controversial topics such as the name
conflict with Macedonia. It’s best to avoid showing an
open palm directed at someone’s face as this may be
seen as an insult.
foreign exchanges
Be aware that
Greek people have a flexible attitude towards time. Don’t
be surprised if business meetings or social events begin
late. Being patient and including some extra time in your
schedule can help business relationships with your
Greek counterparts.
People can be easily distracted and subject to numerous
interruptions. The personal problems of employees are taken
seriously and dealt with in a paternalistic way.
Watch out for
Written communication as there is a general distrust for it.
Contracts tend to be simple and there is much more weight
placed on face-to-face conversation.
The final word
Use every opportunity to socialise with your Greek
counterparts. Personal relationships with colleagues are highly
valued in Greece with physical contact being commonly used
to emphasise the subject matter.
5 minutes with Geoff Bryan
LUXURY: Where was your last trip away? I was lucky
enough to get to South Africa for the Football World Cup
last year, and while it was fantastic to follow the All Whites
around, I did enjoy other aspects of being there, including
the unlikely-to-be-repeated experience of being kissed by an
elephant... and it was my wedding anniversary!
LUXURY: What has been your favourite travel experience
to date? This is such a hard question because different things
are important at different times of life. In my 20s, I did the
OE and while none of it could be described in any way as
luxurious, I remember most of it fondly, except for
exceptionally slow Spanish trains and being thrown
out of the Forum in Rome (my fault). However, in
2008, I spent seven weeks in China, covering the
Olympics and Paralympics – my wife came
and in between Games, we travelled
around, taking in Shanghai and the
Terracotta Warriors. To stand on the Great
Wall and contemplate the scale of it all is
simply mind-boggling.
LUXURY: What do you never travel without? Patience
and a sense of humour.... even if it can be easy to lose both.
Timetables will invariably be disrupted, your luggage may take
a different route to your destination, maps may not take you
where you think you are going and the weather – when you
really want it to be fine - may well not oblige, but through it
all, it’s an adventure, filled with new experiences.
LUXURY: Are you a planner or more a go-with-the-flow
type of traveller? If I might borrow from the rules of real
estate – plan, plan, plan.
Conditions of entry: By entering this competition you are agreeing to receive information via email
bag to give away. Competition closes 13 February 2012. Winner will be notified by email 15 February
2012 to confirm delivery address. Prize is not transferable or redeemable for cash.
LUXURY: Any favourite mementoes or keepsake that
you have picked up on your travels? It would be fair to say
that I am to shopping what dolphins are to mountain climbing.
However, the most well-remembered present would have to
be four sets of shoes for the children from Atlanta in 1996.
The fashion then was for running shoes with flashing lights
but because American sizes were different to ours, I drew the
outline of four sets of feet and traipsed through shoe shop
after shoe shop trying to match the shoes to my bits of paper.
LUXURY: Any travel tips? Always check if you have a “sick
bag” in the pocket in front of you...you might not get sick, but
what do you know of the person next to you. If travelling with
someone, cross pack - if the airline loses your luggage, at least
your companion will have some of your clothes.
