JIN MEYERSON

Jin Meyerson
Jin Meyerson (b. 1972 Incheon, Korea) graduated with a BFA from
Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minnesota in 1995, and
an MFA from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia in
1997.
Meyerson's monumental paintings bring together traditional
practice methodologies with an image set that is distinctly
contemporary, drawing specifically from a media-saturated
internet age. Near-illusionistic to the eye, Meyerson's paintings
layer and juxtapose dozens of highly-detailed images, often
distorted or fragmented so that at first glance the works present
themselves as swirling masses of colour and pattern. This
moment of visual incomprehension is at the heart of Meyerson's
practice. The interweaving of a wide array of imagery borrowed
from predominantly digital source material references a contemporary
viewer's tendency to sift through thousands of contrasting
digital images on a daily basis. The aesthetic which thus
emerges from Meyerson's work is one of meticulously rendered
chaos. Meyerson's paintings celebrate visual tensions between
the natural and manmade, warping and thrusting together
images of decaying buildings, apartment complexes, trees,
people, flags and urban waste into configurations that are
simultaneously nightmarish and awe-inspiring, and which across
the two and three metre expanses of Meyerson's canvases are
elevated to the status of revelatory images of worship.
In contrast to this post-industrial, post-internet aesthetic,
Meyerson's studio practice is strikingly traditional. After periods
of extensive planning in which his designs are sketched and
transferred onto the canvas, Meyerson's paintings are executed
in layers limited strictly to the media of oil paint, acrylic paint and
ink. With the help of assistants, who make possible the monumental
scale of his works, Meyerson's perfectionism and exactitude
liken his practice to Renaissance studio ideals, in which the
artist's meticulous planning and execution equates to a visual
pursuit of balance and the sublime. Meyerson's images of
distortion, saturation, and fragmentation reverberate with the
violent collision of the objects and figures that are his subject
matter. Depicted with the utmost attention to detail, Meyerson's
commitment to a medium that is deeply traditional, imbues his
fast-paced, explosive compositions with a permanency and
gravity that positions them as shrines to the 21st century.
