MCLEMOI GALLERY is proud to present "and ...some text works"<br />
by Peter Burgess. Representing the culmination of more than 2<br />
decades of ongoing projects, in which the artist embarked on a<br />
witty investigation of words and the associations, methodically<br />
rearranging letters to create anagrams that play on the names of<br />
famous artists, celebrities and sayings. These playful rewordings<br />
are realised in a series of works that poke fun at art world politics<br />
and blur the line between the artistic high and low brow.<br />
As an artist, Peter Burgess focuses on how we negotiate the<br />
relationship between private and public levels of experience. In<br />
his work ordinary situations become infused with possibility; the<br />
domestic and the familiar become a microcosm of the public<br />
arena. Burgess is intrigued by the narrative potential of found<br />
objects and images. The mundane things that are normally taken<br />
for granted (a parcel tied with string, an old photograph, even<br />
language) are given new and unexpected meanings.<br />
Born in Australia, Burgess lived and worked in New York City for<br />
twenty years. He returned to Sydney in 2000 and is currently<br />
Co-Acting Subject Leader in Printmaking at the National Art<br />
School. Burgess studied Architecture at New South Wales Institute<br />
of Technology before studying Art at Alexander Mackie<br />
College of Advanced Education. He received his Master of Fine<br />
Arts from Pratt Institute, New York.<br />
Burgess has had numerous solo shows and has exhibited extensively<br />
in group exhibitions across Australia, North America and<br />
Europe, including: Documenta 8 (Kassel, 1987), The Decade Show<br />
(New Museum, NY, 1990), Australian Perspecta (AGNSW,1983)<br />
and, Prints and Australia – Presettlement to the Present<br />
(Australian National Gallery, 1989). Burgess was recently awarded<br />
the Australia Council residency in London, where he held a solo<br />
exhibition. He has been the recipient of numerous grants, awards<br />
and art prizes, including the Fremantle Print Prize twice.

MCLEMOI GALLERY is a contemporary art space established in 2012 by Sara Leonardi-McGrath, Glenn McGrath AM and curated by Kristia D. Moises.<br />
The primary focus of the gallery is to center itself as an open forum, representing international and Australian mid-career artists; and introducing young<br />
emerging artists through exhibitions, conversations, consulting and partnerships with Cultural Institutions. The Galleryʼs mission is characterized by an<br />
adherence to a curatorial program, which aims to create a sense of community and learning.<br />
