Our Mission
To help women and children heal, grow and overcome
difficult life circumstances by providing affordable mental
health counseling and innovative educational programs
in a respectful and nurturing environment.
Our Goals
• To improve the psychological, social and occupational
functioning of our clients.
• To link women and children to services at a time when they have
a high probability of improvement, and before they become
more severely impaired.
• To ensure all services are affordable to our clients, thereby
removing cost as a major obstacle to treatment.

President’s Message
Dear Oasis Supporters,
Oasis is celebrating twenty years of
providing outstanding counseling
services to women, children
and families in the Birmingham
metropolitan area. Begun with
one woman’s vision of providing
affordable care in a safe and
nurturing environment, Anne
Bruno LaRussa’s vision has grown
to a staff of 15, providing services
to more than 2,000 individuals
and over 5,600 hours of therapy
annually.
The year commenced with a
commitment from our Board and
Steering Committee to engage in
a multi-year Expansion Campaign
to raise funds sufficient to open
the third house – the 1912 House
– as a dedicated child therapy
center. This campaign, led by
Steve Brickman and Celina Miller,
has been quite a success. There
has been 100% Board commitment
and contribution to the campaign.
With initial grants of support by
The Junior League of Birmingham
- Beeson Community Fund and the
Community Foundation of Greater
Birmingham, Oasis was able to
begin work on renovating the
1912 House and expand its child
therapy by hiring an additional
therapist who also specializes in
play therapy. As of the writing of
this letter, the 1912 House is now
staffed and open.
Thanks to the continuing support
of long-time donors and new
contributors, Oasis continues
to be a haven for those seeking
counseling and care. Throughout
the year, Oasis asks clients to
complete a voluntary confidential
survey. The comments are so
moving as young women express
how Oasis helped them to
overcome eating disorders and
escape abusive relationships and
mothers report how play therapy
brought back their child’s smile
and joy. These comments are a
tangible reminder of the beneficial
and essential work the counselors
and staff at Oasis provide each day.
My heartfelt thanks go to all who
have supported Oasis in 2014.
Because of the generosity of
countless individuals, corporations
and foundations, Oasis has been
able to provide quality, professional
mental health services to so many
in our community. The professional
support provided by the staff at
Oasis gives our clients the strength
and motivation to overcome
adversity and improve their lives.

Since 1995 Oasis has helped more than
35,000 women, children, and families.
In 2014 Oasis touched the lives of 2,257
people.
Core Counseling Program
Oasis provides counseling services that promote self-sufficiency
and help clients develop knowledge and skills for maintaining
well-being. These services help clients reduce depression and
anxiety, increase self-esteem, build healthy relationships, improve
their problem solving skills, learn to set goals for their future and
successfully cope with the challenges in their lives.
Play Therapy for Girls and Boys ages 3-12
Play Therapy builds on the natural way children learn about
themselves and their relationships in the world. Oasis’ Registered
Play Therapists use specially selected toys and materials for their
therapeutic playrooms with careful attention to the effect they have
on a child’s therapy experience. These therapeutically designed
playrooms help children express emotions through the natural
medium of play. The ability to safely and appropriately express and
process emotion provides the foundation for children to heal and
grow into functioning adults.

Counseling for Adolescent Girls
Treatment for adolescent girls incorporates a variety of approaches
including expressive arts therapy and traditional talk therapy. Oasis’
Registered Art Therapist helps the girls better access and express
their thoughts and feelings using specially selected art materials
and interventions. Oasis counselors work individually with each girl
to help them improve self-image, express and validate feelings,
build healthy relationships, find healthier coping styles, and
develop a positive outlook on life.
Wise Women
PROGRAMS AND COUNSELING FOR WOMEN AGES
55 AND OVER
GROUP PROGRAM
30 women, ages 55 and older, participated in the Wise Women Program,
which is conducted free of charge at Freedom Manor, an apartment
complex for low-income elderly. The group meets twice monthly and
provides seniors with a social network that includes facilitated group
discussion, art activities, guest speakers, and access to valuable mental
health resources.
COUNSELING
In 2014, Oasis provided 559 counseling sessions to 114 women ages
55 and older. The majority of the women reported depression as
their primary presenting problem. Other issues included loneliness,
anxiety, adjustment issues, trauma, grief, and relationship issues.

Oasis of Hope
LUNCHEON
The eighth annual Oasis of Hope Luncheon held March 11, 2014,
featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Laura Montgomery-Barefield
who provided rousing remarks on the need for mental health
services. Celina Miller, the mother of a young client shared how
Oasis impacted her entire family. Chairpersons were Oasis Board
members Andrea B. Powers and Ann J. Gulledge. The luncheon
raised more than $121,000.

Oasis was transformed into an art gallery for the third annual ArtCard
held April 24, 2014, featuring more than 125 original pieces of art
from local artists. The event not only raised more than $12,000 to
support Oasis programs but it also introduced a new audience to
