2011 Annual Report &
2012 Spring Update

President’s Message
Annual Report 2011
I joined the Board of Directors of Oasis Counseling for
Women and Children in 2006 and it has been a joy to witness
its growth and success over the last 6 years. In 2011, I had
the honor of serving as Board President. We added a second
play therapist to the staff and saw a 26% increase in services
to children and adolescents. We increased earned revenue by
seeking new third-party providers and we ended the year
on sound financial footing despite unstable economic times.
None of this success, however, would be possible without
the generosity of individual donors, the business community,
charitable foundations, and numerous volunteers. Thank you
to our friends and donors whose on-going support makes it
possible for us to continue making a positive impact in the lives
of so many women and children. I hope you find this report
informative and that it confirms your commitment to our
critical mission in the community.
Our Mission
To help women and children heal, grow and overcome
difficult life circumstances by providing affordable
mental health counseling and innovative educational
programs in a respectful and nurturing environment.
Carla S. Roberson
2011 Board President
“Oasis saved my life,
literally. I was in a dark
place, unemployed and
depressed. Finding an
affordable option like
Oasis has been a life-line
for me.” Molly, age 30
Our Goals
• To improve the psychological, social and occupational
functioning of our clients
• To link women and children to services at a time when
they have a high probability of improvement, and
before they become more severely impaired
• To ensure all services are affordable to our clients,
thereby removing cost as a major obstacle to treatment
Community Impact
Since 1995, Oasis has helped women and children heal from mental health problems
caused by trauma, violence, depression, anxiety, grief and challenging life transitions.
In 2011, Oasis had a 6% increase in number of clients overall.
Services Provided:
• Adult and Adolescent Individual Counseling
• Couples and Family Counseling
• Outreach and Education
As a key resource in mental health services for women and children, Oasis works
closely with a caring network of nonprofit organizations to serve those in need
without duplicating services.
Core Counseling Program
To address escalating hardships on families, services were provided that promote
self-sufficiency and ensure development of knowledge and skills for maintaining
well-being. These services help women move beyond the cycle of poverty and better
care for themselves and their families.
Children & adolescent appointments increased by 26%.
Child and Adolescent Therapy
Children (ages 3–12) who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally received play
therapy and girls (ages 12–18) received counseling services appropriate for that age
group. These services helped children and adolescents process feelings and concerns
that assisted in decreasing problematic symptoms and behaviors in the school
environment, at home and with peers.
Children and young girls from low-income families were referred to Oasis for
counseling by pediatricians, school counselors, private therapists, Family Court,
the Department of Human Resources, Children’s of Alabama, parents, and local
nonprofit agencies.
Common Problems For Children & Adolescents:
• Parental divorce, grief, school adjustment
• Relational Problems
• Anxiety and depression
• ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
Healing and resolution of issues takes place through interaction
with Registered Play Therapists Mimie Player and Catherine Foss.
“Play therapy is a high quality program
and the impact it has on children is tremendous.”
Jim Sisson, Oasis board member
• Play Therapy
• Group Therapy
2011 Counseling Outcomes
2011 Program Outcomes
Provided 4651 counseling sessions to
905 women and children.
• Carolyn Nemeth, LPC, coordinates all calls requesting services and either
sets an appointment with a counselor or refers to a more appropriate
agency. Appointments with a counselor are usually scheduled within 10
working days.
• Clients ranged in age from 3 to 83. 16% of clients seen were children and
youth, 9% were women over 55, and 75% were adults ages 19 to 54.
• Through our Master’s level internship program, 3 graduate students
provided services that allowed Oasis to expand capacity by 13%.
• Sliding-scale fees for self-paying clients averaged $18.00 per session
compared to $90 to $130 per session in the private sector.
66% of Oasis clients had an annual household
income of $17,000 or less.
Of those clients who participated in at least 4 therapy sessions:
• 66% had a decrease in their depression scores
• 45% had a decrease in their anxiety scores
• 65% had an increase in their well-being scores
Of the clients responding to a Client Satisfaction Survey:
• 94% are coping better since coming to Oasis
• 96% learned skills that help improve their life situation
• 99% found their counselor to be respectful and supportive
• 99% stated they would recommend Oasis to a family member or friend
“My child sleeps through
the night now and is no
longer disrupting her class
For the third year, the partnership with the
Junior League of Birmingham (JLB) continued in
support of the Freedom Manor Wise Women group.
JLB members and volunteers assisted Oasis staff in
presenting innovative and educational programs and
they provided lunch to the elderly women. They also
helped Oasis bring joy to the lives of these women.
In December, members of the JLB chorus led the
women in song for the holidays.
2012 New Programs and Initiatives
2012 New Programs and Initiatives (cont.)
Art Therapy, a powerful therapeutic tool
Karen Gibbons recently joined the Oasis
staff. She holds a M.A. degree in Marital
and Family Therapy and Art Therapy
from Notre Dame de Namur University
at Belmont, CA. Karen has practiced as a
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
and Art Therapist in Birmingham and in
Palo Alto, California. At Oasis, Karen works
with individuals, couples and families on
a wide range of issues including loss and
bereavement; at-risk behaviors; family of
origin concerns, relationships, lifecycle
transitions, depression and anxiety, stress
management, and anger management. Through her work Karen knows that art
expression is an effective form of therapy and a way to communicate when words
cannot. Karen has offered art therapy to the Wise Women group at Bankhead Towers.
All of the ladies receive tremendous value from the activities that promote and
nurture their self-expression.
Junior Board is formed
The Oasis Junior Board, in it’s first year as an organization of young professionals,
ages 19-35, is committed to increasing awareness of Oasis’s positive impact in the
community, recruiting other young professionals, and raising funds. This group is
dedicated to being leaders in the organization through effective volunteerism and
social fundraising. These young leaders believe that the mission of Oasis is vital
to our community. Their first fundraising event, ArtCard, will be held in June in
support of that mission. Also, several of the members helped at the 2012 Oasis of
Hope luncheon.
Officers include: Megan LaRussa, President, Meredith Robinson, VP, Barnett
Chenoweth, Sec/Treasurer. ArtCard event chair is Alden Speake.
Members include: Ashley Bentley, Barnett Chenoweth, Marianne Combs, Michael
Hansen, Jane Johnson, Megan Kyle, Chelsey LaRussa, Celina Miller, Mary Elizabeth
Roberson, Anna Catherine Roberson, Meredith Robinson, Knight Sauls, and
Alden Speake.
Mama’s Time Out, a group for Moms
“Mama’s Time Out” is a new group for mothers of children who are infants to
older elementary. The group, led by Oasis counselor and licensed marriage and
family therapist Ellery Berryhill, meets twice monthly. The new and growing group
welcomes any mother of young children who would like therapeutic support,
parenting ideas and collaboration, and a chance to meet other mothers in the
community in a supportive setting. General topics covered include rediscovering
oneself after becoming a mom; how to set and maintain effective boundaries; how
creativity and “play” can enhance parent-child relationships; establishing one’s
parenting style; and effective stress management techniques for Mom and her child.
Child Parent Relationship Therapy
The Strengthening Families Through Play is a new pilot program designed to
strengthen the relationship between a parent and their child. Parents or guardians
of children ages three to twelve will participate in four parenting group sessions to
learn the importance of play and overall parenting skills such as how to relate to
the child in a developmentally appropriate manner, setting limits and responding to
their child’s emotions and needs. The program will also include four to six supervised
parent-child play sessions which will allow parents to practice and work toward
mastering positive parenting skills.
First Junior Board Meeting
“Our Board, Advisory Council, Jr. Board, and staff
are grateful for a community of supporters who help
us care for women and children in times of challenge
and change.” Kathryn Bowden, Oasis Executive Director
