SPEAKERS St. Sebastian's Welcomes A look at the people who have spoken at St. Sebastian's School events over the past several months. The Power Of The Powerless Christopher de Vinck Trust your inner voice,” stated Christopher de Vinck, author of The Power of the Powerless, during his visit to St. Sebastian’s on Sunday & Monday, September 13-14, “for it is the whisper of God guiding you along the way… Trust is the tool to overcome your fears.” Through personal stories, Dr. de Vinck demonstrated how God has a way of placing people in our lives at just the right moment. He spoke with passion as he discussed his brother, Oliver, who despite being born blind and mute with physical disabilities that kept him completely dependent on others, had the ability to teach so much to the family that loved and cared for him for over thirty years. “Goodness pursues goodness,” he repeated throughout his presentation as he illustrated that no good act, no kind deed, goes unnoticed. In a time when we are inundated with news that only emphasizes all that is wrong with our world, we need to only look around us to see the true presence of Christ in our family, neighbors, and friends. A Day Of Unity Steven Tejada St. Sebastian’s School celebrated Unity Day on Friday, November 6. The keynote address was given by Steven Tejada, the 2008 and 2009 AISNE Students of Color Conference Keynote Speaker. Tejada performed a one-man play which highlighted a young man from the Bronx who was struggling with different aspects of life. In particular, the play focused on the man's best friend, who was about to leave the Bronx in order to attend college. The Ability To Trust Andrew Wasynczuk The annual Boston Business Breakfast was held at the Boston College Club on Tuesday, November 24. Andrew Wasynczuk, Senior Lecturer of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School and past Chief Operating Officer for the New England Patriots, gave the keynote address. Wasynczuk began his presentation by discussing how the New England Patriots grew from a struggling franchise into threetime Super Bowl Champions. During his comments he noted that without trust, the Pats would not have experienced such success. Wasynczuk said that each player had to trust in his teammates’ abilities, and that all of the players needed to trust in their coaches in order for the group to function as a successful team. The same, he said, must happen in a business environment. Without trust, companies cannot function properly. Employees need to trust one another, employers need to trust their employees, and employees and employers must trust each other if a company is to be successful and operate to its fullest potential. The Virtues of Boys' Schools Headmasters Burke, Brennan, and Melvoin St. Sebastian’s School hosted a panel presentation entitled, “The Virtues of Boys’ Schools,” on Monday, December 7, Fr. SPEAKERS 2009. Close to 300 people attended the event which featured Headmasters Bill Burke (St. Sebastian’s), Kerry Brennan (Roxbury Latin), and Richard Melvoin (Belmont Hill). Moderated by Kai Bynum, Board Member of the International Boys’ School Coalition, the evening gave prospective parents an opportunity to learn about the benefits of having their sons educated in a single sex environment. A special cocktail reception and private dinners will be held for the Classes of 1960 (50th Reunion) and 1985 (25th Reunion) on Friday evening. Saturday will feature a Headmaster's Luncheon for the Classes of 1945-60, the Alumni Memorial Mass, and the Headmaster's Cocktail Reception. The Reunion Clambake will highlight Reunion 2010 on Saturday evening. More details will be made available shortly, and alumni are encouraged to take advantage of an online, early registration discount (which will begin in mid-January).
