(low-income groups)<br />

At the beginning <strong>of</strong> pregnancy, you should receive a Mother-Child Pass (Mutter-Kind-Pass),<br />

to be used for recording medical check-ups <strong>of</strong> the mother <strong>and</strong> unborn child <strong>and</strong> subsequently<br />

for recording vaccinations <strong>and</strong> check-ups during infancy <strong>and</strong> early childhood stages. You can<br />

obtain your mother-child pass from your gynaecologist, your general practitioner, your district<br />

public health <strong>of</strong>fice, the specialized outpatient services <strong>of</strong> your district health insurance fund,<br />

the outpatient services <strong>of</strong> hospitals with maternity clinical departments or from pregnancy<br />

consultation <strong>of</strong>fices.<br />

The mother-child pass check-ups are a prerequisite for the receipt <strong>of</strong> the childcare allowance<br />

(Kinderbetreuungsgeld).<br />

8.2 Childcare Allowance <strong>and</strong> Parental Leave<br />

Every child (also foster <strong>and</strong> adopted children) is eligible to receiving childcare allowance<br />

without any link to employment or m<strong>and</strong>atory insurance contributions.<br />

The following prerequisites must be satisfied to receive the childcare allowance:<br />

• common household with the child<br />

• at least one <strong>of</strong> the parents living in the same household with the child is entitled to<br />

receive family allowance (Familienbeihilfe)<br />

• If neither parent is entitled to receive family allowance (Familienbeihilfe), the childcare<br />

allowance can nevertheless be granted if the appropriate duration <strong>of</strong> social insurance<br />

times have been achieved resulting from gainful employment.<br />

• Performance <strong>of</strong> the mother-child pass examinations – five during the pregnancy, five<br />

after giving birth, are to be evidenced by the 18 th month after birth – otherwise only<br />

50% <strong>of</strong> the child allowance will be granted starting with the 21 st month after birth.<br />

An additional gross income <strong>of</strong> up to 14,400 euros per year is permissible.<br />
