Fundraising, Trading and Communication Fundraising, Trading and Communication For the first time ever, we generated more than £1 million from our trading ventures as well as £1 million from fundraising activities. We also continued to work closely with local media to publicise our events such as the Starlight Walk and to inform the public about the work of the Hospice. In 2008/09 we must continue to build our fundraising, trading and communication capacity to make sure we can meet growing need. What we planned to do last year Our achievements We aimed to extend our network of major supporters enlisting the help of volunteer champions. We planned to continue working on joint fundraising events with our neighbouring hospices and to introduce new events like The Starlight Walk to attract supporters of different ages to extend our support. We aimed to encourage more people to consider leaving us a gift as a bequest in their will. We planned to open two extra charity shops. We planned to research and develop a model for the growth of Peace Hospice trading as well as strengthening our systems. We have established contact with a number of people who can help us by networking and advocating support for the Hospice. We received several significant gifts including further support of £200,000 from The Raz Gold Foundation and family. Our Starlight Walk succeeded brilliantly with over £190,000 raised – our most successful event ever. Once again we organised events jointly with other charities – like the firewalk with the Hospice of St Francis and The Big Herts Walk along with Watford and District Mencap, Watford New Hope Trust and Sigma Charitable Trust. We have produced a new legacy information leaflet and highlighted the benefits of leaving a bequest to the Hospice in our newsletter Peace Hospice News. Legacy income increased to more than £500,000 last year. Our new shop at South Oxhey was a great success, taking over £140,000 from the date it opened in June to the end of March. The other shop we had planned to open, is still being pursued. Selling goods on eBay and books on Amazon produced an increased income and turnover from Trading surpassing £1 million for the first time. 14 15
Fundraising, Trading and Communication Fundraising, Trading and Communication What we plan to do next year 2008 - 2009 It is important for us to continue to seek major gifts to support the growing work of the Hospice so we would like to develop our network of supporters in this area of giving. We plan to repeat excellent events like The Starlight Walk and to introduce new options for different audiences like ‘Pedal for Peace’ - a cycle ride open to men as well as women. We also wish to find a new database to replace our old system which we have used for over a decade so we can improve the way we communicate with supporters. We will use our new leaflet and encourage people to leave a gift to the Hospice in their will, once they have provided for their beneficiaries. We have an agreed strategy for developing trading for the Hospice and will continue our search for further suitable new shops. We will also test out new ideas like reclaiming Gift Aid on some items donated to our shops. 16 17
