BVSC Executive Committee BVSC is managed by an Executive Committee whose members are directors of the company and trustees of the charity. They are responsible for the overall management of the organisation, determining policy and ensuring that it is implemented by the staff through the Chief Executive. CHAIR’S FOREWORD This year, Janet Smith resigned as Chief Executive of BVSC after 28 years with us, firstly, for 11 years as Volunteer Bureau Manager and then as Chief Executive for 17 years. During this time, Janet helped to develop new organisations, expanded BVSC and played a key role in partnership working. There were many highlights, particularly Janet’s involvement in setting up a number of organisations including: Homestart, Carers Support Bexley and Bexley Accessible Transport Scheme; the partnership with the William Kendall’s Charity and, in 2006, securing pension payments for employees in the voluntary sector. On behalf of all the trustees and staff at BVSC, I would like to thank Janet for all her hard work, not only over the last year, but over all her time with BVSC and wish her well for the future. So one chapter ends but we were very pleased to welcome our new Chief Executive, Sakthi Suriyaprakasam, who joined us this summer and who will now lead us as we begin the next chapter at BVSC. Sadly one of BVSC’s trustees, Nell Berwick died on 15 March, having served on our Executive Committee since 2001. Nell was a very well-known figure in her community and became the champion of North Cray estate having lived there since the early 1960s. Nell was involved with the Residents Association for North Cray and was Chair of the Cray Meadows Community Forum for a number of years. She will be very much missed. My thanks go to the Mayor of Bexley, Cllr Alan Downing, who was our President this year and has been very supportive of the voluntary sector and of BVSC and to all our funders, including the London Borough of Bexley and Bexley Clinical Commissioning Group. I would like to thank our Board of Trustees whose support I value greatly and, in particular, congratulate our Treasurer, Brian Jones, for receiving the Borough’s Civic Recognition Award. Lastly I would like to thank all of BVSC’s staff for their hard work and ongoing commitment. Linda Whitby ACTING CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S INTRODUCTION With continuing pressure on budgets throughout the voluntary sector, the commissioning process for the Performance Reward Grant was particularly welcomed as was the fact that the voluntary sector was rewarded for its innovative approach with the majority of the funding going to eight of its projects. Presentations on these projects throughout the year at the Voluntary Forum have clearly demonstrated the valuable contribution they are making to the Borough. BVSC’s bid to the Performance Reward Grant to establish a Voluntary Sector Resource Centre within the new Tesco Community Unit on the Civic site was one of the successful bids and Janet Smith worked with the Council for over 18 months to progress the idea. Planning permission for the store has been agreed and a 106 agreement signed between the Council and Tesco. A design for the layout of the Centre was developed, initially through volunteer, John Roberts using a Computer Aided Design package and then subsequently with a second volunteer design professional, Caroline Kirsop, who was referred to us by BVSC Trustee, Ray Hudson. We thank John very much for all his hard work and Caroline for her on-going support.
