How Dependable Are You? 1. Your friend has a bad case of the sniffles and has to stay at home, do you: a) Bring her/his homework over and tell her/him about the latest news at school b) Feel sorry for her/him and say “Get well soon.” c) Visit your friend everyday until she’s/he’s better 2. You’re in the middle of studying for a big test and your best friend calls you with a huge problem. Do you: a) Bring your books to her/his house and let her/him talk, and then later she/he can help you study. b) Say you’re busy and you’ll talk to her/him later, but forget to call c) Go over to her/his, and end up not studying 3. Your bud wants you to help her/him with a subject you’re doing great in. Do you: a) Give your bud your homework to copy b) Say “I want to but I’m too busy, ask someone else.” c) Tutor your bud during your extra time 4. Your best friend got a horrible haircut and starts to freak out because picture day is tomorrow. Do you: a) Lend her/him a nice hat =) b) Laugh and tell her/him that no one will notice… c) Quickly bring her/him to a professional hairstylist ASAP! So just how dependable are you? If you answered... Mostly A’s: You’re dependable and you always have your friends’ back. You’re loyal and supportive whenever a friend has a problem or needs advice. Also you won’t get carried away and do anything just because a friend asks. A well balanced friend like you knows that you won’t be a pushover. You’re the best of both worlds! =D Mostly B’s: Oh no! You’re not at all dependable. Though you want to help your friend, you usually don’t. Remember, friends are there for each other through thick and thin, so don’t always put yourself first. Next time when a friend is in need, step up and help them. More C’s: Someone’s in trouble? No worries! You’re going to the rescue! You’re there, no matter what. Final Thoughts Remember and Never Forget BOOM! The ground shakes as you sit in a foxhole in the war-torn fields of Europe. You wonder, ”Am I dead yet?” A barrage of artillery sounds in the distance…it's not far from your side. You quickly jump on the ground, close your eyes, and pray with all your might that a shell doesn’t hit. Slowly but surely, the artillery barrage subsides. You look in front of you and a small smile emerges. You sigh with relief, but suddenly, a sound creeps into your ears, a sound that sends chills down your sides and makes your hairs stand on end. You recognize that sound…they’re screams— the screams of your fellow soldiers, the screams of your family in Europe. Slowly, you lift your head above the foxhole and to your horror, you see one of your comrades desperately crawling towards the leg he just lost…it becomes too much. I am very excited to announce that our school has been selected to be the first school to host an exhibition called "We Said Never Again" on the genocide in Rwanda and its connections to the Markham community. Last year, the YRDSB Heritage Schoolhouse and Markham Museum developed a Youth Curator Project and selected several students from across the board to develop a professional exhibit at the Markham Museum. A number of our Grade Twelve students were chosen to participate. The project has since travelled to an international conference on Genocide in Montreal and has been nominated As you lay in the war-torn fields of Europe, you turn around, cover your ears and try to block out what is happening. At the same time, you pray for another attack to finish. You pray for an end to the suffering. To some people, Remembrance Day is just another day, but to others, it means more than any other day of the year. It is the day to remember the soldiers who went to war, fought and died for our freedom. It is a day where fear is absolved, a day to thank our veterans, and a day to remember loved ones as well as strangers who gave up their lives to secure our present and future. The next time you walk into a mall and pretend not to see the veterans handing out poppies for donations, remember the suffering they endured. Remember how they watched their brothers die in agony. I always feel a little patriotic on this day, it’s like a second Thanksgiving when everyone takes the time to think of our history and how we're a living product of past achievements. Within our school, I think we should uphold a tradition of showing immense respect and personal thought on that day.” Brintha Satkunaratnam, Grade 12 “It’s important because without veterans, we would not be where we are today, so it is only right to commemorate what they did." Philip Pang, Grade 11 Karston Chong, Grade 10: “A day to thank our soldiers.” “We Said Never Again” — The Rwandan Genocide Exhibit Co-op student Calvin Man (left) worked with the Markham Museum staff to set up the Rwanda Genocide exhibition in the Library. Over the course of the week, many students stopped by to examine and learn from the exhibit. Page 19 for an Ontario Heritage Award. This year, the project will extend to the development of a virtual exhibit, but in the meantime, parts of the exhibit are travelling to selected schools in Ontario. As such, Trudeau will be hosting a portion of the exhibit in our Library from November 9th to 13th.
