Sleepover Awards 2006
TRADITIONALLY, this season of the New Year is regarded as
a time when we should all be looking forward in
anticipation of the days to come – rather than back
over the road we have just travelled. And yet, as I was
thinking about this recently in the context of The Boys’
Brigade, and reflecting upon some of the great saints of
God who have been outstanding leaders of our Movement
since 1883, there drifted into my mind the verse from the
beginning of the fifty first chapter of the book of the prophet
Isaiah, where it says, “ Look to the rock from which you were
hewn and to the pit from which you were dug” – words
which would seem, at any rate, to turn the cult of preoccupation with the present and
the future completely on its head.
So, what was he saying, and why should we listen to his voice now as we prepare
to greet another year ? When Isaiah was writing, his country was in the throes of
conquest, overrun by the Assyrians, and thousands of Israelites carried off to captivity
and enslavement in exile. Not a happy prospect – but yet Isaiah still had words of
comfort and hope to give them, by pointing them back to their roots and firm
foundations through the enabling power of God in the past, going on to assure them
of great things yet to be in the future. And, as he had prophesied, so in time it came
to pass, the exiles returned and the nation was rebuilt with joy and thanksgiving, a
note which sounds out time without number in the Book of the Psalms.
Now we in our time often give the impression of being almost desperate in our
efforts to be “with it”, eager for what is novel or different, but showing scant respect
for the things and ways of the past. To be fair, in one way this is quite natural and
praiseworthy, for there could be no progress in the world without new thoughts, new
ideas and new endeavours. But – in the main these new concepts arise out of old
ones and it is the old situations which give rise to new enthusiasms.
So, when at New Year we pause and take stock of where we are as Christians, in
the Church, and in the family of The Boys’ Brigade, when we begin to make our plans
for the days, weeks and months that lie ahead, we should remember at the same time
to look back to our roots, and recall the wonderful things which the Gospel’s Good
News has accomplished all over the world and not least in our great Movement in
times that are past. And, as we look back, give thanks that the prophet’s words have
come to pass and continue to come to pass so often in the story of the Church of
Jesus Christ.
For, as we do this and look to the rock from which we were hewn and to the pit
from which we were dug, so shall we draw fresh strength, hope and encouragement
as we turn again to our calling of the advancing of Christ’s Kingdom. There is no
nobler calling than this, no anchor to faith or life more sure or steadfast. Through the
good grace of our God may this be a truly happy and blessed New Year for you all.

We have all been bombarded recently
with information telling us how terrible
our teenagers are and we appear to top
the league tables of every social issue
from teenage pregnancy to street crime.
The surveys offer no solutions and
whilst there seems little will to look for
causes, our politicians vacillate between
the reintroduction of national service
and the notion of hugging a hoodie.
There is no doubt that for some young
people all perception of social
responsibility has been lost and many
lives are blighted as a consequence. No
one would underestimate the effect of
such behaviour on communities and the
tragic waste of potential.
The reports indicate that young people
benefit from positive engagement with
adult role models and we could all cite
evidence from our own experience.
However, it is notoriously difficult to get
the media to report good news stories
about young people and some seem
therefore to aspire to the national
stereotype portrayed.
How do we in The Boys’ Brigade
contribute to this debate? What do we
believe to be the truth about young
people? How do we communicate to
young people a sense of value and selfworth?
As we celebrate Christmas, there is a
message of hope within the darkness.
Thank you for the aspiration, support
and challenge you bring to those in your
care. I wish you every blessing for
Christmas and the New Year.
THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD SCHEME
50th Anniversary
Little did Rhys Davies (21 st Cardiff
Company) know when he
accepted the message from the
Brigade President at Brigade Council in
Cardiff in September 2006 that the
adventure was just beginning. The
message was relayed on foot, bicycle,
canoe and car. It was received by
various bands, a Deputy Lord Mayor
and a Town Council Chairman. It
visited all sections of the Brigade at
regular company meeting nights. It
arrived at Battalion and District
meetings and was carried for part of its
journey through the Peak District by a
BB/GB group from Nottingham
undertaking their Gold assessment
expedition.
It was delivered to the Edinburgh
International Conference Centre, where
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
General Council was held in November
2006 with the Duke of Edinburgh
himself being present. Four young
men from 3 rd Kilsyth Company handed
it to the official presentation party:
Michael Gregory of 1 st Burton-in-
Kendal, James Brodie, 1 st New Deer
and John Bogle of 1 st Loughaghery. On
cue, they marched across the stage
and down to the Duke of Edinburgh.
The ‘the adventure begins here’ logo
and the message were shown on the
screen and Martin
Lewis
CBE read the message. The
presentation received loud applause
from the large audience.
In the evening, an excellent concert
was held. The items were performed
entirely by young people, which
included the 6 th /8 th Dundee Company
pipes and drums and 36 bandsmen of
all ranks.
In closing the conference, Sir Tom
Farmer CBE KCSG, chairman of the
Award Trustees, told of two schoolboy
friends of his who belonged to the BB.
They said those days in the BB provided
the foundation that shaped their lives
and influenced everything they did. His
final words of encouragement were
“don’t let your heads go down, you are
making a difference in the lives of
your young people.”
Thus completed a splendid
achievement by the Brigade,
demonstrating a wonderful
exercise of co-operation,
communication and public
relations, spread over several
months.
ENGAGE
A GENERATION
>progress so far…
Engage a Generation is the BB
project which aims to increase
our visibility, improve our
reputation with churches and more
crucially to reverse the trend of
declining numbers and to bring more
leaders and young people into our
movement. We have set ourselves the
aim of starting 125 new companies by
the time of our 125 th anniversary in
2008.
• In 1995 613,000 ten to nineteen year
olds were attending church
• By 2005 this figure had dropped to
230,000 – a drop of 62%
Obviously stark statistics do not paint
the whole picture and sometimes
generalisations are not helpful, but they
do put the context within which The
Boys’ Brigade and other Christian youth
work is operating.
“The Boys’ Brigade
offers a firmly Christianbased
means of working
creatively with children
and young people, using
a programme
of adventure and
activity, which is flexible
enough to meet the
needs of your church”
In the last Gazette a report was made on
an initial piloted campaign. A lot has
been learned from these initial
campaigns, not least, that when we
arrange face-to-face meetings with
church groups, we are sometimes
pushing at an open door. There has
been some extremely positive feedback,
and several very promising “leads” have
been made.
We have also been able to design a
model approach and template for
targeting churches. This has led to the
production of a pack of resources that
can guide battalions through their own
campaigns to grow Boys’ Brigade in
their own communities.
The steering group has been looking at
what we are offering the church and
believe the statement in the box (left) is
the answer to the two fundamental
questions posed below:
• Do you value children and young
people?
• Do you see them as central to the life
and mission of the church?
It is unlikely that a church would be
likely to respond in the negative.
However, recent research highlights that
although churches would affirm the
above many struggle with the reality of
this.
• 39% of churches have no one
attending aged under 11
• 49% of churches have no one
attending aged 11 to 14
• 59% of churches have no one
attending aged 15 to 19
Many churches have great difficulty in
engaging with young people. The Boys’
Brigade through its activities and
programme attracts many youngsters
into churches who otherwise would
never cross the threshold. It challenges
them with the Gospel and works in
partnership with the church to nurture
faith. For many young people activities
such as BB or youth fellowship become
the church, but some churches struggle
with this concept.
The research shows that where midweek
meetings for children and young people
exist as part of the church’s overall
mission then the church is more likely
to grow. The priority given to children’s
and youth work is also vital.
Naturally we believe the Brigade to be
an effective outreach tool for the church
enabling it to access communities and
families, but we need to ensure that our
mission is understood. For some, a
stereotypical image persists and presents
a barrier to our development. Our task
is to share Jesus with young people.
That has been our core since 1883 and
although our methods of working will
change, our purpose remains constant.
Please pray for the development strategy
that is unfolding and that through it
more young people may hear about
Jesus. Many Battalions have already
become involved in the campaign and a
support pack is available. If you would
COMPANY
SUPPORT
SCHEME
“It works because it
uses local people with
local knowledge, who
have a commitment to
keeping The Boys’
Brigade thriving in their
own communities.”
What is it?
The Company Support Scheme is a
year old now, having been piloted in
these battalions:
• Plymouth
• South Lincolnshire
• Yorkshire County
• North West Kent
• South and West Wales
• Hull and East Yorkshire
• Stirling
(Not forgetting Belfast battalion, who
have been running a similar scheme
for several years.)
The pilot scheme was set up using
groups of enthusiastic volunteers, who
had all been round the BB block a few
times, and welcomed the opportunity
to perform a more strategic role in
their battalions. They have become
“Company Support Officers” and have
attended training to enable them to go
into companies armed with all the upto-date
information and resources.
These Company Support Officers
(CSO’s) all have lots of experience of
working with young people and
children in the BB, so understood the
pressures and the challenges faced by
our leaders. They were also people who
could listen, understand and then
respond with creative, practical ideas
and advice.
Although it is too soon to report any
dramatic results, there is plenty of
evidence to show that it is a method of
supporting and encouraging
companies and leaders that will bear
fruit in the coming years. It works
because it uses local people with local
knowledge, who have a commitment to
keeping The Boys’ Brigade thriving in
their own communities. Headquarters
staff are able to co-ordinate and
resource the network of CSO’s, but it is
the commitment of these volunteers
that carries the scheme forward.
Why do we need this?
Like many of our partner organisations
in the voluntary youth sector, the BB
has experienced an overall decline in
numbers of young people and in
numbers of companies. Most BB
leaders are aware that the steepest
decline came in the 1990’s, when the
number of companies dropped steadily
from about 3000 to today’s 1650.
Between 1986 and 2006 the numbers
of young people attending BB halved
and today there are 189 companies
with fewer than 10 young people.
The reasons for the decline are varied,
with some being a result of the
changes in the ways we live our lives
and therefore external to the Brigade
and beyond our control. Some
explanations may lie closer to home,
and despite best efforts we have
sometimes struggled to recruit leaders
or have been unable to get across the
immense joys and benefits of being
involved in BB.
The Company Support Scheme is
designed to respond to the factors that
are within our own control, and to put
in place better support, ideas, help and
advice when and where it is needed. It
is the partner project to “Engage a
Generation” which seeks to raise the
profile of The Boys’ Brigade and start
new companies. The first and most
CONTACTS:
urgent task for the Company Support
Scheme is to provide immediate
support for those companies that are
at risk of closure. Beyond this
“emergency aid” the scheme will seek
to encourage companies to design
more exciting programmes, recruit
new staff and to be even more effective
in delivering our mission.
How can you get involved?
Simple:
• Talk to your battalion or district
colleagues about it.
• Decide on someone (a good
organiser) who can work with your
Regional Headquarters to coordinate
the scheme.
• Contact your Regional
Headquarters. The names and
details are at the end of the article.
• Headquarters staff will help you to
recruit and train the right people to
become CSO’s. This bit is crucial to
the scheme being a success in your
area.
• You are up and running!
As your scheme gets going there are
ways in which Headquarters staff can
help you to review progress and
overcome any initial teething
problems, but it is your scheme. Lets
not sleepwalk into further decline, but
do something positive now. Could you
do this?
MEETING OF THE
BRIGADE EXECUTIVE
The meeting was held at Brigade
Headquarters, Felden Lodge, on
18 th /19 th November 2006. In addition to
routine business, the following matters
were also dealt with:
The Brigade President announced the
appointment of Mr Perry Donaldson
as a Brigade Vice President. The
meeting welcome Rev’d T McCormick
to his first Executive Meeting.
Jonathan Eales was welcomed as the
Business Director Designate.
Constitutional Review: The Executive
received draft proposals from the
Constitutional Review Group.
Consultation will take place with the
wider membership and further details
are contained in the Gazette.
Girls: The Executive received a report
from the Management and Advisory
Group following the motion to Brigade
Council. The Executive is keen to
reach a solution and has asked the
Brigade Secretary to explore possible
ways forward. Further details appear
elsewhere in this Gazette.
a position he still holds
today. He is a very active
Captain involved in all
sections of the Company.
This session the Company
has just over 100 boys.
Perry has served on many committees of
the Belfast Battalion and was Battalion
President from 1994-1997. He is a
member of Battalion Executive and
Chairman of the Finance Committee.
His business expertise and experience
have benefited the Battalion in many
areas of its work and development.
Brigade Development Plan: The
Executive was updated on progress
towards specific aims and also gave
thought to the formulation of the new
plan starting in 2008 and how this
might be best shared with the
membership.
IT Infrastructure: A report was given
regarding progress with regard to
linking Carronvale and Rathmore to
the central database. The recent
difficulties with web & mail were
outlined and the Executive agreed in
principle to a professionally managed
solution for the hosting of the web and
email services.
Finance: The Brigade Treasurer
reported on the deficit on the Brigade’s
general fund income and expenditure
on the first six months of the year.
Although expenditure was roughly in
line with expectation, there had not
been the expected income. The
Supplies operation and the Training
Centres are working well, but the
Treasurer reminded the Executive of
the ongoing drain of the pension fund
shortfall.
Programme Review: A progress report
was given on the work on the
Company Section programme
material. The Executive approved
several recommendations including
delaying the material for Seniors to
ensure that a quality product for
Company Section is achieved. Details
are contained in the Gazette.
Global Youthwork Project BB
Cameroon: The Executive approved
the commencement of the project
which will focus upon the issue of The
Boys’ Brigade as a worldwide family
and the self-sustainability of the BB
movement in Cameroon.
Sub-Groups: Groups under the
headings of Finance, Development and
Training were held which dealt with
various aspects of the Brigade’s
Development Plan
Reports were received on the work of
the Regional Committees
GIRLS IN THE BOYS' BRIGADE
The Brigade Executive discussed the
issue of girls in The Boys' Brigade
following the result of its motion to
Brigade Council in September and
issues the following statement:
Mindful of the position of Brigade
Council in that a majority was reached,
but not the required majority to change
the constitution, the Executive is
actively working towards finding a
mutually acceptable solution to the
issue of girls in The Boys' Brigade.
In the interim, the current practice
relating to competitions and events
should be maintained as and where
appropriate depending on the nature
of the event.
PRESIDENT’S
COMMENDATIONS
During the Queen’s Badge
Presentation Ceremony in Belfast last
year, the Brigade President presented
his Commendation certificate to:
JACK LIGGETT:
1 st Caledon Company
Jack, age 6, was travelling home by
car from a shopping trip with his
mother and younger brother, when
his mother became unwell.
After pulling on to the hard
shoulder of the M1 motorway, she
fainted. Jack had the presence of
mind to flag down a car for help,
which resulted in his mother being
taken to hospital. At the same time
he took care of his brother. Jack
may well have saved his mother’s
life.
He is a credit to himself, his family
and the BB.
Jack with Captain, Mr Ashley Marshall
and officer in charge of the Anchor Boys,
Mrs Margaret Verner.
GRAEME TANNAHILL:
72nd Glasgow Company
Graeme has been a member of the
72nd Glasgow Company since early
years, following in the footsteps of his
brother, father and grandfather before
him. Graeme suffers from health
difficulties, but that has not detracted
in his effort to be a full and active
member and to achieve the Queen’s
Badge earlier this year. Through all
these efforts, Graeme has wanted to be
a member just like any other and his
perseverance and dedication is an
example to us all. This additional effort
was recognised in him being awarded
the Brigade President’s
commendation. His church, his family
and the Company are proud of what he
has achieved and the inspiration he
has been to others in the Company.
The 72nd Glasgow Company, operating
in an area close to the city centre, is
one of the oldest Companies in the
Brigade and will celebrate its 120th
Anniversary next year. Graeme is now
helping with the Anchor Boys and
Junior Section.
The presentation was made by Eric
Woodburn, Secretary of Glasgow
Battalion. The photograph shows
Participation
Update:
Participation Training:
In the BB we believe very much in the
everyday participation of young people
and children in decision making, and
we particularly want to look at how we
can work in new ways to do this in
local groups. This training course is
designed to enable leaders to share
good ideas and to develop awareness
and knowledge of how to use
participation effectively in their
companies. By attending you will . . .
Understand what is really meant by
“participation” at company, battalion
and national levels
Become a champion of participative
working by understanding why it is the
key to good youth work, and
Become confident in how to use
participation techniques and methods
in your BB work
If you are committed to involving
young people in shaping the future of
your company or are just curious to
hear more, then you would be very
welcome to come to this training
event. We promise it will be fun,
informative and will definitely help you
to transform the way you work with
young people!
spending a month in Kenya, and the
rest of the year spent working in the BB
their own ideas. Anyone who might be
Constitutional
Review
THE BRIGADE EXECUTIVE
authorised a review of our
constitution in spring 2005 and a
working group was commissioned with
the following remit:
• To review the Brigade Constitution
and associated regulations and the
Memorandum and Articles of The
Boys’ Brigade (Incorporated)
• To make recommendations to the
Brigade Executive
• To prepare appropriate resolutions
for Brigade Council and the
members of The Boys’ Brigade
(Incorporated)
Currently there are a number of
elements that make up The Brigade’s
constitutional position:
• The Boys’ Brigade as a charitable
movement
• Constitution of Brigade Council as
periodically amended
• Memorandum and Articles of
Association of The Boys’ Brigade
(Incorporated) – incorporated on 19
October 1916 and amended by
special resolution on 24 March
1950. This is the registered charity.
• Individual Companies that are
constituted as part of the church,
together with Battalions and
Districts.
The intention of the Group was to
simplify much of this and the group
proposes that the new constitution of
The Boys’ Brigade should be the
Memorandum & Articles of
Association of the Incorporated
Company and that the documentation
required to achieve this would be:
• Revised Memorandum & Articles of
Association
• Updated and consolidated Brigade
Regulations
It has been important to consult with
the Brigade as part of the Review and
twelve consultations were held and
over two hundred and sixty people
took part and written observations
were received. Issues discussed were:
• the terms of office for Regional
Committee & Executive members
• obtaining the required skills mix on
the Executive
• the role of Regional Committees
• the roles, remits & responsibilities
of Battalions & Districts
• the role of Brigade Council
• youth participation at all levels of
decision making
• terminology and titles of sections
Girls as members of The Boys’ Brigade
was also discussed, but falls outside
the current remit of the CRG.
The observations made at the
consultation were incorporated into
the draft documentation. It is believed
that the proposed documentation will
deliver:
• The Boys’ Brigade as a registered
charity and registered company for
national purposes
• Clear linkages between the
Company being an integral part of
the church
• Provide for stronger regions
• Facilitate regional differences with
regards to Battalions & Districts
• Build strong foundations for the
future of the movement taking into
account good governance
The proposed method of operation
provides the following benefits:
• Clear constitutional documentation
• Clarity for the operation of the
movement at all levels
• Embraces young leaders having a
role in leading the movement
• Facilitates regional development
and caters for geographical
differences in area groupings
• Consolidates the operation of the
national charity, irons out a number
of anomalies and recognises
current practices
• Consolidates Brigade Regulations
into a single document, which is
user friendly and will assist
Companies in carrying out their
work.
Draft proposals were presented to the
Brigade Executive at its November
meeting. A draft copy of the
Memorandum and Articles of
Association will be sent to all Battalion
Secretaries and is available on the
website. If further copies are required
please contact Brigade Headquarters.
If Battalions or Districts would like to
have further consultation then this is
possible and inquiries should be
directed to the Brigade Secretary.
From the West Anglia Battalion….
23 boys and 4 staff from the West Anglia Battalion took
part in the Giant Sleepover 2006. The Battalion event
was held at Priory Methodist Church, Bedford, home of
3 rd Bedford Company. From arriving at 7pm on the
Saturday night, the boys were kept busy with a variety of
activities before settling for the night. On the Sunday
morning we just finished breakfast in time to take part in
the Aquafresh Minty Mouth Challenge, before finishing
our sleepover with Church Parade. The group raised
£976.80 for through sponsorship for Childline.
2007 Awards
We were surprised to learn that our group raised the
most money for Childline, and so were invited to attend
the Giant Sleepover Awards at the BT Tower on 12 th
October. We were only able to take four boys, so those
who had raised the most money were invited to attend.
The party consisted of Joshua Scrutton and Tyler Esnard
(20 th Luton), Grant Hayward (1 st Flitwick) and Adam
Stevens (3 rd Bedford), accompanied by Andrew Burchell
(20 th Luton) and Colin Watts (3 rd Bedford).
On Saturday 12 th October the Giant
Sleepover Awards were held at the BT
Tower in London. The 1 st Stevenson
Company (Scotland) and the West
Anglia Battalion (England) had won
awards for the ‘Best Theme’ and ‘Most
Money Raised’. The two BB groups
who had won awards were amongst
other groups from the Scouts, Guides
and Schools.
Over 1000 groups took part in the
Giant Sleepover with a total of over
35,000 people involved!
After some presentations in the Auditorium we were
invited to the 34 th floor where we had lunch in the
revolving restaurant, looking out over London on a
beautifully clear day.
The Boys’ Brigade were well represented at the awards as
the 1 st Stevenston Company’s World Cup theme won them
the award for the Best Themed Sleepover.
Overall, the Giant Sleepover certainly
lived up to its motto – Fun, Friendship
and Fundraising – and set two new
world records: the biggest simultaneous
sleepover and the biggest simultaneous
toothbrushing!
Andrew Burchell
Congratulations to all that took part in
breaking 2 Guinness World Records
(‘Largest Simultaneous Sleepover’ and
‘Most people brushing their teeth
simultaneously’).
In 2007 the Giant Sleepover will be
held from Saturday 16 th June to Sunday
17 th June.
company had almost closed with
numbers down to two boys, but
through prayerful support there are
now ten boys and it is hoped that
Anchor Boys will re-open in a few
months.
Golden Jubilee
15th National 10-Pin
Bowling Championships
IT SEEMS INCREDIBLE that 15 years have
past since the first Championships
in 1992. During that time, the
trophy has been mainly wrestled over
by Companies in the South/South East
and the North West District. The
current holders, 10 th Enfield (3 times
winners) stood a good chance of
retaining the title.
At the end of the qualifying round, we
were hit by a double first. Two of the
teams that qualified for the next round
did not want to continue, with
comments like “1 needed to get home”
and “I hadn’t envisaged making it that
far”. The other had travelled a long
distance and had entered for the fun of
the event. They wanted to get to
Bedford’s Oasis Swimming pool and
so the organisers quickly ran around
the building and car park checking if
the next two teams down the league
were still around. They were! and so
got a very lucky reprieve to continue.
One of them was our new comer to the
event 1 st Denton [2], the other being 5 th
Gloucester [1] who thought they blown
it this year.
A number of teams had caught the eye
during the Qualifiers, 1 st Bletchley had
scored the most pins, 10 th Enfield led
their league, and the 39 th Nottingham,
9 th, South East Essex, 11 th Northampton
& 14 th West Bromwich were all teams
that had done well in recent years.
From the Alley a Strong contingent of
2 nd teams got promoted to the Main
Championship, 9 th South East Essex
[2]. 7 th Southport [2] and 14 th West
Bromwich [2]. This years wildcard slot,
also went to another Alley team, 1 st
Church [2] who had a great pin score
better than a lot of the first teams.
The Officers competition is always a
favourite, a chance for the drivers and
staff to show the youngsters that
you’re never too old. This year’s
winner was Dave Pilborough from 1 st
Church with 209. It is the 4 th time he
has won this event !
The knockout stages, then followed
and the standard was raised. 1 st Church
[2] took on 2 nd Bedford [1] and in one of
the closest games of the round, each
match was decided in the last frame,
with Church edging through just 2-1.
Those into the Alley Final were 1 st
Denton[2], 7 th Grimsby [2], 11 th
Northampton [2] and 10 th Enfield [2]. A
fairly close final ensued with 11 th
Northampton [2] regaining this title
which they also won 2 years go.
The Championship Semi is when the
big hitters need to be counted. 14 th
West Bromwich [2] were astonished to
beat 39 th Nottingham as they were over
100 pins behind. However, in the
Semi’s it’s still a matchplay event and
1 st Bletchley suffered the same fate.
Two teams that had just scored many
more points than that of any of the
finalists would this year, had just seen
this year’s dream sunk.
It would be worth giving a mention to
Stewart Boon, of 39 th Nottingham, who
put in 4 scores of [187, 185, 182 & 177]
one of the best set of scores seen in
recent years.
Like 1 st Denton had in the Alley, so 5 th
Gloucester [1] had also made it
through to their final, along with last
years Champions 10 th Enfield and the
wildcards 1 st Church [2]. This meant
that 2 of the 4 teams from the Alley,
had made it through to the Grand
Final.
The final was quite a close contest,
with neither of the teams really
breaking away. As the frames
progressed 14 th West Bromwich [2] ran
out of steam. 10 th Enfield were also
slowing, and then an inspired couple
of frames from 1 st Church[2] with the
crowd behind them, saw the trophy
heading back to the North West.
My thanks to all the teams for another
great Championship. To ‘Go Bowling’
for being hosts, to the staff of the West
Anglia Battalion for all that they do
throughout the build up and on the
day, and to Chris Row (Brigade Vice-
President) for presenting the awards.
Next years event is likely to be Saturday
13 th October 2007 at Go Bowling,
Dunstable. We shall also have a new
Registrations Administrator, Dave
Pilborough, with myself and the team
still managing the event on the day.
Championship Administrator.
THE GATHERING
PASSION. HOPE. ENTHUSIASM. Just a
few words which approach a
description of the atmosphere
that infused Carronvale House over the
weekend of 14 th /15 th October 2006.
But these three words only begin to
capture it; a fourth completes it:
excitement.
The occasion was the first meeting of
the thirteen-strong group of young
men, comprising current and former
KGVI cadets and former Seniors,
driving forward ‘The Gathering’, an
event at Carronvale on Saturday 24 th
February 2007 designed by young
people to progress Aim 5 of our
current Development Plan: ‘To
promote the participation and
empowerment of young people by
developing the decision making
infrastructure of The BB’.
Presented with a blank canvas and
motivated by this single purpose, over
the weekend The Gathering grew from
a date pencilled in a diary to an
ambitious, aspirational and, crucially,
achievable event. And this by
individuals who had not known each
other as they walked in the door on
Saturday morning. Needless to say, it
wasn’t long before a team emerged
that fully embraced the possibilities
The Gathering holds for The Boys’
Brigade.
The weekend began, following a short
period spent focused on the planning
weekend’s purpose with team-building
activities, albeit with a twist. These
kick-started the process of critical
thinking needed for the task ahead.
Crucially, they also identified and
celebrated the gifts and achievements
of the assembled team offering
reassurance that the ensemble were
precisely those people equipped to
achieve that task.
Next, a humorous exercise honed the
team’s skills in selling items they were
asked to bring to the weekend that
were precious to them. This done in
the hope that The Gathering once
devised would be similarly precious
making much simpler the task of
selling it to the seniors and young
Officers from Battalions across
Scotland who would attend.
After lunch The Gathering was
committed into God’s hands through
prayer; that His will would be reflected
in the group’s vision and refracted
through their actions. The hard work
of designing the programme then
began. A fairly relaxed day proved
incredibly productive and by the
Sunday morning the programme of an
event that promises to be filled with
fellowship and packed with purposeful
discussion about the movement’s
future had materialised.
But this was only the start. Skills
developed the day before selling items
as obscure as pillows, iPods and
cuddly monkeys were used to begin
planning the publicity for the event.
Each of the planning group members
tasked themselves with securing
support for the event by making
personal representation to their local
Battalions, encouraging others to
attend, air their views and start
shaping the movement to mirror their
vision.
At first sight this seems a difficult task.
But I for one am confident that if the
atmosphere of the weekend spreads
out from Carronvale as they gather in
the event’s participants the House will
easily be filled with 150 seniors and
young men each with the same
passion for their movement, a similar
hope for its future, and an enthusiasm
to share their vision. Together, fully
embracing the possibilities enshrined
in a single sentence in a Development
Plan that unlocks their potential to
shape their movement, they can begin
mapping the road ahead.
THE GATHERING
SATURDAY 24 TH FEBRUARY 2007. EXCITED?
FINDING YOUR WAY TO THE GATHERING…
The thirteen young men planning this event will be attending events in your
local Battalion to deliver a presentation to tell you more about The
Gathering (remember those finely tuned marketing skills…). In fact, by the
time you read this they may have been and gone, moving elsewhere to fire
up another group with their passion and enthusiasm for the event. If you’ve
missed them, don’t worry. Further information can be found on a flyer that
was sent out in December’s Company Mailing in Scotland and an electronic
version is available on The BB Scotland website: http://scotland.boysbrigade.org.uk/.
For more details, and to book places to attend The
Gathering, simply return the slip on the reverse of that flyer or call
Carronvale House on 01324 562008. Make sure your Boys find this flyer.
Encourage them to find The Gathering.
their own church hall.
The Top Team Challenge covers a
wide range of tasks so that all
Companies have a fair chance of
doing well. A sample of activities is
likely to include: Physical, General
Knowledge, Logic, Bible knowledge,
World Issues.
Top Team is an ideal way of taking part
in a national competition without
needing to travel or incur any
expenses. To take part your Company
only needs to have four boys per team,
and can enter multiple teams.
The Challenge must be judged by an
adult who is not an officer in the
Company.
Companies are free to choose when
they carry out the Challenge within the
months of January – March each year.
It can form part of a Company Section
programme or could be an activity
for a separate evening.
All entries for the Challenge have to
be returned to BBUK Headquarters
by 1st April.
To enter you MUST request an entry
pack for each team taking part from
BBUK Headquarters.
These will then be sent to you as
sealed envelopes with full
instructions. A response card has
been sent to Company Captains.
Young people’s questions
YOUNG PEOPLE have an uncanny way
of reducing the abstract and the
mysterious to their own terms.
Describing how God creates people, one
little boy said, “He first draws us and
then cuts us out.” Another said, “God
flies around in the sky. Sometimes he
stops behind a cloud to have something
to eat. He sometimes goes down to land
at night to see shepherds and talk to
them.” Unable to think in abstract terms,
young people tend to interpret Biblical
metaphors and word pictures literally.
Unfamiliar words like ‘hallowed’ and
‘temptation’ they equate with ones they
understand. “Harold be thy name….Lead
us not into Thames station.” Last year a
little Edinburgh boy, instead of saying in
the Nativity play, “And an angel did
appear in the sky”, was heard to say “And
an angel did a pee in the sky!”
Many parents and grandparents can
recall exchanging half-pleading, half
terrified glances, each hoping the other
had some kind of meaningful answer to
such theological questions as, “Is God a
man or woman?” “How can God hear
everything when so many are praying at
the same time?” “Does God pray?” “How
far away is heaven?” “Why did God
create mosquitoes and midges?”
I remember once being asked if there
would be sweets in heaven. That was
not an easy question to answer. To have
told my son that there won’t be sweets
in heaven could have given him the
impression that heaven is an
unattractive place. Though I might have
said that there will be the best kind of
sweets in heaven, I preferred to say, “I
don’t know, but I am sure heaven will be
a wonderful place.” Children have to
learn that there are many questions
about God and heaven to which we
don’t know the answer. As Paul said,
“Now we know only in part….Who can
understand the mind of the Lord ?”
Many and varied are the attributes
parents and Boys’ Brigade officers need,
but one that is not required is the ability
to answer every question young people
ask. Children don’t think the less of us
for occasionally saying “I don’t know.”
They don’t expect us to be unfailing
oracles. On the other hand we must not
make this an excuse for not studying
what we believe. During a group
discussion a young man said, “I would
give anything to believe in God.”
“Would you really?” inquired an older
member of the group. “How long is it
since you read a book which might have
helped you clarify your beliefs. How
long is it since you spoke to someone
who might have helped you believe in
God?” The young man had to admit he
had done neither, and yet he said he
would give anything to believe in God.
By making time to study our faith, we
could better equip ourselves to share the
life enriching truths Jesus taught.
On those occasions when teenagers’
questions have threatened to drown me
in a sea of philosophy, I have often
quoted a former President of Harvard
University who said, “I don’t know much
about God, but what I do know has
changed my life.” Making Christianity
attractive to young people, and sharing
with them the faith and values of Jesus of
Nazareth, that is far more important than
attempting to answer such unanswerable
questions as “How long has God been
alive?” and “Who made God?”
Driving a Minibus
Please find the following
information obtained from the
Driving Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA) relating to the licensing
position for those driving a minibus.
New regulations for the driving of
minibuses came into force on January
1, 1997. Existing drivers who held
entitlement to drive a car prior to
January 1, 1997 (Group A on an old
style licence or category B and D1 not
for hire or reward on a new style
licence) may continue to drive
minibuses provided:
• they are twenty-one years or over,
• the minibus has a maximum of
seventeen seats including the
drivers and,
• the vehicle is not being used for hire
or reward.
To drive a minibus with nine or more
passenger seats for hire or reward, a
Passenger Carrying Vehicle entitlement
(PCV), (category DI or D) is required
necessitating higher medical standards
and a further driving test. Hire or
reward encompasses any payment in
cash or kind by, or on behalf of,
passengers which gives them a right to
be carried. However, if you drive a
minibus for an organisation under the
Minibus Permit Scheme or other than for
hire or reward, no additional test is
required to be taken.
Minibus permits allow a charge to be
made without having to comply with
the full Public Service Vehicle Operator
Licensing requirements and without
the need for drivers to have PCV
(category Dl or D) entitlement. The
services must be provided for the
organisation’s own members or for
groups whom the organisation serves,
but must not be provided to members
of the general public. Such charges
made must be on a non-profit basis.
The Boys’ Brigade is authorised to
grant minibus permits to units
registered with us, applications for
which are available from Headquarters.
Permits are issued to specific units,
but are not vehicle specific allowing it
to be used on a hire vehicle if the unit
vehicle is not available.
New drivers who obtain a car licence
(category B) after January 1, 1997, can
drive vehicles with no more then 8
passenger seats. To drive vehicles with
up to 16 passenger seats (category Dl)
higher medical standards must be met
and an additional test required.
However, new drivers who comply with
the following five conditions will be
able to drive a minibus with up to 16
passenger seats without having to
obtain category Dl:
• the vehicle is used for social
purposes by a non-commercial
body but not for hire or reward
• the driver is aged twenty-one years
or over
• the driver has held a car (category
B) licence for at least two years,
• the driver is providing their service
on a voluntary basis, and
• the minibus maximum weight is not
more than 3.5 tonnes excluding any
specialist equipment for the
carriage of disabled passengers, or
no more than 4.25 tonnes
otherwise. The weights referred to
are known as the maximum
authorised mass (MAM) which is
the maximum permitted weight
when the vehicle is fully loaded.
IMPORTANT!
You should check the weight of the
minibus which you use, as some 15
and 17 seater minibuses are over the
maximum weight allowed for those
who obtained their licence after
January 1, 1997. If this is the case
drivers who do not have a category D
or D1 entitlement would have to apply
for this entitlement to be added to
their licence by passing the relevant
theory and practical tests and
completing a medical – even if not for
hire or reward.
If you have a medically restricted
licence or are over 70 you should read
the booklet ‘Driving a Minibus’ or
contact the DVLA to seek clarification
for your position. You should also
check before driving a minibus abroad
as different regulations apply.
A booklet can be downloaded from the
DVLA entitled ‘Driving a Minibus’
stating the full regulations at
www.direct.gov.uk/assetRoot/
04/01/12/75/04011275.pdf
If you are in any doubt about your
licensing position you should contact
the DVLA’s Customer Enquiries Centre
on 0870 240 0009.
aged between 16 and 25 in the BB (http://www.b-link.org.uk). The magazine
seeks to:
• Advertise opportunities for young people to get involved in the BB;
• Enable young people throughout the organisation to keep in contact;
• Highlight new local initiatives and share practice throughout the BB
However most importantly, the magazine is meant to be fun and inspiring.
Please take the time to read B-link to find out more. We have sent the first
edition to all registered leaders under-26, and one copy has been sent to
every company through the company mailing.
funding to secure the future of the
magazine. Consequently we will continue
to send B-link out to all registered leaders
under-26 and through the company
mailing, but we are also offering the
opportunity for Battalions/ Districts to
purchase copies of the magazine and
then distribute them in their areas as
they see fit.
We would love to see every young
person aged between 16 and 25
receiving and contributing to B-link.
The cost of the magazine is £0.40
hope you agree good value for
money for the quality of the
magazine.
chance for you to buy a session long
NEIL BOND (42) followed in his
father’s footsteps and joined the 2 nd
Cardiff Company at Clare Gardens
Methodist Church where he remained
as a boy and officer until its closure,
when he transferred to 1 st Barry at
Cadoxton Methodist Church. Neil had
great inter-personal skills and
encouraged boys who did not fit in or
who were lonely or shy. Neil was
committed to living out the Object
wherever he was and served the
company with complete loyalty and
enthusiasm. He had the gift of
humour and could easily make people
laugh. Popular with boys and officers,
Neil drew people to himself and was
loved by all. His faith sustained him
through periods of chronic illness and
he bravely returned to BB after major
surgery for cancer and was officer in
charge of the Junior Section In 2005
Neil was presented with the ‘Thomas
Award’, a company award for a boy or
officer who had made an outstanding
contribution to the company during
that year. In 2006 the Cardiff and Vale
of Glamorgan Battalion awarded Neil,
posthumously, the Terry Pasley
Endeavour Award in recognition of his
stoicism throughout his illness. We
thank God for this great servant whom
it was a privilege and joy to know.
HIGH CRAWFORD (88) joined the 3 rd
Airdrie Company as a boy. He served
as Captain from 1946 to 1948 and
again from 1954 to 2003. He also
served as an elder in Clarkson Parish
Church, a member of the Executive
committee of the Airdrie, Coatbridge
and District Battalion for many years
and was made an Honorary Vice
President when he retired as Captain.
Many lives were influenced by Hugh’s
guidance, friendship and Christian
example. He is remembered with
great fondness and respect by all those
who had the privilege of knowing him.
HUGH ELDER (86) joined the 76 th
Perth Lifeboys in 1928. He gained the
King’s Badge in 1939. Hugh’s forte
was PT and swimming and once he
became an officer he was appointed
both Battalion PT and Swimming
Convenor. He attended the Jubilee
camp at Dechmont, the Royal Jubilee
Review at Queen’s Park, Glasgow and
most of the Battalion camps, as boy
and officer. He left the company for
army service in 1940 and in 1945 was
awarded the Distinguished Conduct
Medal and Military Medal for gallantry
and resource on the battlefields of
Burma. He returned to the company
in 1947. After retiring from active
company life, he was appointed to the
Reserve of Officers of Perth & District
Battalion and latterly was an Honorary
Battalion Vice President. He is
survived by his wife Mary, sons
Rhoderick and Douglas (both ex-BB
boys) and grandchildren.
DAVID TAVISH FRASER, BEM (86) was
the longest serving officer in the 1 st
Thurso Company. He was officer in
charge of the Lifeboys before becoming
Captain of the company. David was
highly respected and in 1990 awarded
the BEM for his services to youth work
in Thurso. He was an enthusiastic
member of the Scottish Episcopal
Church and the People’s Warden for
many years. When The Boys’ Brigade
Museum was opened in the 1 st Thurso
Company hall in 2001, the museum
was named the David Tavish Fraser
room, where his memory will live on in
the hearts of all those who were
fortunate to have know him. He was
loyally supported by his wife, Agnes
and proud that his daughter Janet
became Captain for many years.
T MILLAR GIBSON (84) joined the
143 rd Glasgow Company as a young
boy, eventually becoming Captain in
1954. He also served the Maryhill
District as Convenor over several years.
When he retired from the captaincy in
1968 he continued to serve as
Battalion Honorary Vice President and
then as Honorary President until his
death. He also served his church for a
period as Session Clerk and through all
of these offices influenced, for good,
many lives of boys and adults.
BRIAN PETER HOATH (62) joined 2nd
Grays Company at Riverview Methodist
Church, Chadwell St Mary, Essex as a
Lifeboy in 1952 and reached the rank of
Staff Sergeant. As a member of the
band he was senior drummer and he
loved to sing solo at one of the London
District Albert Hall Displays. He
helped start the 2 nd Chelmsford
Company in 1967 and continued as
Lieutenant for many years, taking
charge of the Junior Section. He also
formed and acted as Bandmaster for
the combined GB/BB band. In 1972 he
became Captain for six years. His wife,
Pat, was Captain of the GB for some
years. Brain was an active member of
the church and became a Methodist
Local Preacher in 1985. When he and
his wife moved to Chelmsford Brain
became involved in the work of the
newly planted ecumenical church.
Brian was a real inspiration to many
boys over the years. He is sadly
missed by friends, colleagues and his
wife, Pat, son and daughter and
grandchildren.
ROY McHUGH (85) was a former
member and Captain of the 6 th West
Middlesex Company from 1940-42. He
attributed much of his success in life
to the experience and leadership
training he received in the BB. He was
proud to have taken part in the display
organised to celebrate the Silver
Jubilee of King George V in 1935. Roy
retained a lifelong interest in the BB
and the family involvement continued
through his grandsons, David and
Michael, who were members of the 2 nd
Fleet Company. He will be sadly
missed by his wife Joyce, four
daughters and family.
JOHN McKEAN (68) joined the 2 nd
Kirkintilloch Company, but in 1958
transferred to the new 5 th Kirkintilloch
Company at St Mary’s Parish Church.
John served as an officer in the Junior
Section and as an Elder in his church.
Everyone who knew John had
memories of a gentle, patient and
caring man and we give thanks to God
for his life and work. John leaves his
wife Janet, sons Jim, Stephen and
family.
THE REVD JOHN MICHAEL REES
(64) was Chaplain of 5 th Kingston &
Merton Company at New Malden URC
from 1977-85. BB Headquarters is
indebted to him for his contributions
to the Gazette Chaplain’s Corner in the
1980s for around seven years.
SYDNEY ALBERT TORRINGTON (86)
joined the 4 th Newport Company in the
1930’s based at the Central Hall. He
transferred to 10 th Newport company,
based at Maindee Mission. He was a
keen member of the band and became
lead drummer. During the war he saw
service all over Europe with the Royal
Engineers. He became Captain of the
10 th Newport in the 1960’s and
brought a wealth of experience, which
was manifest in the high standards of
the company. He enjoyed camp as
cook and quartermaster and became
known as Uncle Syd. He was
appointed Vice President of the
Newport & Gwent Battalion. Sydney
understood the meaning of service to
boys.
Obituary:
Roy Herbert
Although the name of Roy Herbert was
known to those of us who had to deal with
the old ILEA, I didn’t personally come into
contact with Roy until ten years ago when I
had the privilege of becoming Vice
President and then President of the London
District.
The biggest task which confronted the BB
then, and now, was how we were going to develop our work in a
modern and relevant way.
This was a task which required a certain sort of Christian person –
someone who matched this Christianity with knowledge,
commitment, concern, a genuine love of children and young people
and of the organisation as a whole. Who better than Roy Herbert?
So, Roy became our Development Officer and for the next few
years travelled the length and breadth of the Capital, visiting
every single unit. He drew up imaginative programmes of how we
might push forward, identified new opportunities and, in true Roy
fashion, pressed his views with energy and enthusiasm.
His commitment to the BB and to those we serve and to his
Christianity meant that he was not afraid to speak his mind and
challenge the beliefs, and sometimes, the taboos of others.
Roy represented the very finest that The Boys’ Brigade could
produce. The seeds he sowed throughout his long and
distinguished work with the organisation, and his care for those
individuals, including myself, who had the good fortune to come
into contact with him, will continue to be his true legacy.
BOYS’ BRIGADE ARE GREAT
AMBASSADORS FOR TOWN
I would like to thank members of the
11 th Northampton Boys’ Brigade
Company for their excellent band
display they gave in July in Newquay,
Cornwall.
They held their summer camp at the
local sports centre. They were
ambassadors not only to their
organisation but also to their town.
The Boys’ Brigade is a great
organisation and any young person
would not go far wrong in life if they
joined.
They received praise in our local paper
and I feel their local community should
know of their efforts and achievements.
Having been a member of the 9 th
Plymouth Company for 11 years in my
youth, I was proud to present the boys
with their camp awards.
I am pleased to say that they have
decided to return to Newquay in 2007
for their annual summer camp. I look
forward to their return.
News from London Stedfast Association
The LSA Brass Band held a concert in
memory of the late Denis Morley at
Wesley’s Chapel in London on 8 th
October 2006. A report will be
included in the next issue of
“FedNews”. An excellent concert was
the result of hard work by those
involved and it was a fitting tribute to
one of London’s best loved bandsmen.
Terry Roper, Co-ordinator, is on the
lookout for new members. He is trying
to arrange a Spring Concert and to play
at the Association AGM Church Service
Asia” for the extension of the Brigade in
