This is our annual awards issue
and are there ever a lot of
winning Morgans out there!
I’d like to thank everyone
who sent in photos for the awards, we
have some really nice shots this year.
This is also the time of year when some
mare owners start thinking of breeding. If
you’re in the market for a beautiful Morgan
stud to breed to your mare, be sure to
read the stallion advertisements in this issue.
The professional breeders advertised
within these pages would welcome your
business.
If you’re not planning on breeding this
year or expecting a bouncing baby foal in
the coming months, spring is still a time
full of anticipation... for that first riding
clinic (be sure to check out Page 33) or
that first horse show. If it’s the showring
that you’re anxiously waiting for to dry
out, then be sure to flip to Page 28 to read
about some important Equine Canada information
that could impact you.
We also welcome quite a few new members
in this issue, so, if you’re a newbie,
“welcome aboard,” we’re very proud to
have you as part of our association!
Oh, and if you just can’t wait for spring
to arrive, there’s always the CMHA video
library where you can rent anything from
tapings of interviews with top Morgan
trainers to general horse care (see Page
13) for the selection available.
Until next time,
Happy riding... and reading!
President’s Message
Staying afloat in unchartered waters
I
have been most fortunate to have members contact me by email and
telephone providing feedback, input and discussion about various
topics and issues facing the CMHA board and the Morgan horse
in Canada. We are living in “uncharted waters” at the present time
with a surplus of horses of all breeds and economies both north and south of
the 49th parallel that are struggling some, or a lot, depending on the area.
To receive input and support from our members is crucial to developing
plans and strategies to move forward and remain viable. I recently had
a member call to chat who has been a major breeder for many years. One
of the topics that came up during our discussion was that breeders are the
backbone of the CMHA. This is absolutely true: our association’s purpose is
to provide and maintain an accurate accounting of the pedigrees of Morgan
horses in Canada. In other words: a registry. Without breeders who continue
to register foals, transfer animals to new owners and support the registry, we
wouldn’t have a purpose. We also wouldn’t have much money to carry on
with the other things that we do.
Many Morgan breeders in Canada have been breeding animals for 30 to
40 years and are getting to the age where they are cutting back or ceasing
breeding all together. The CMHA is losing two things through these cut
backs. First, the vast knowledge and experience these people possess, and
secondly, the money they have spent for many years that has supported and
maintained the CMHA.
Another contact was a short note and a cheque from 40- year CMHAmember
breeders, owners and show people Sheldon and Miriam Selk from
Claresholm, AB. I
called Miriam immediately
to thank her for
the donation. Her note
in part read: “Enclosed
is our donation toward
the Canadian Morgan
Horse Association.
What have we done
today? We are helping,
we believe in the Morgan
horse!”
Sheldon and Miriam are no longer active breeders but, as noted, they
believe in the Morgan horse and want to help, and their donation was a way
that they could do this.
We can contribute in different ways. If we have a strong belief in the
Morgan horse and a desire to help the registry survive in difficult times, we
can all find ways to help. I am inspired by the concerns, thoughts and ideas
I have received from members.
We have a dedicated group serving on our board of directors. It is essential
that members provide support, verbally and financially, and positive
feedback with solutions that we can use at the board level.
What we conceive and believe, we can achieve.
Administrator’s Message
This is the time of year
when we celebrate
our hard-working trail
horses, our athletic
versatile horses and our elegant
show horses. Whatever it is that
rocks your world with your Morgan,
we have a category to honour
your accomplishments! Thank
you to everyone who participated
in our awards system in 2010.
Here are a few statistics:
Photo by Joy Photography • 101 purebred Morgan horses
entered points into the Show High
Point.
• 1 part-Morgan entered points into the Show High Point.
• 9 Junior riders submitted equitation points.
• 6 horses entered points into the Trail High Point.
• 21 horses entered points for their Versatile Morgan Medallion awards.
There are two Morgans representing both coasts that deserve special
recognition. In the West, BMF Spartacus earned his PLATINUM Versatile
Award for owner Aren-Dina Popadiuk. Dina hails from Maple Ridge, BC,
and primarily competes with her gelding in combined driving events. Congratulations
Dina on your accomplishments with BMF Spartacus!
In the East we have a stallion and his lady, who have accomplished what
only four other horses have done so far. Dawn Brown and her husband Walter
from Collina, NB, own the beautiful stallion Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li*
and they are being recognized for earning a SUPREME Justin Morgan Honour.
To earn a Supreme Justin Morgan, you must earn eight Justin Morgan
honours in four different categories. He has earned JMs in Pleasure Driving,
Hunter Pleasure, English General Purpose and Driving General Purpose.
“Moe” is used primarily for carriage driving, but has certainly demonstrated
that he is a multi-purpose horse.
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* is now entitled to use an asterisk after his
name and is in good company with these fine Morgans: Honnalee Chante*,
Jalna Valiant*, Adanac Halla’s Dawn* and Bonnie Lee’s Cupid*. A special
presentation will be done in the spring to honour “Moe” at a show in New
Brunswick. Congratulations Walter and Dawn!
The year 2010 was unusual because we changed the high point by offering
new categories for Dressage, Hunter/Jumper and broke apart the
Driving General Purpose division. We certainly hope these divisions will
grow by leaps and bounds in 2011. If you are out there riding your Morgan
or part-Morgan at open hunter/jumper shows or dressage competitions or
driving in carriage shows, contact me to see how you can get involved in
the CMHA high point. It would be an honour to recognize your special and
talented Morgan or part-Morgan.
Registry News
The CMHA board is so pleased with the amount of older Morgans being
registered due to the previous moratorium, that the board has created a
new moratorium to continue registering older Morgans at a discount. The
CMHA will accept Morgans two years and older into the registry at a 25%
discount of the current fee schedule until December 31, 2011.
Heaven Sent:
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li*
by Dawn Brown
with assistance from Nan Holden & Peggy Lareau
It all began in 1994, when Reverend David Keith, of New
Brunswick, asked me, Dawn Brown, if I would take the
unborn foal his mare, Amadeus Nekomia Ash, was carrying
as payment for schooling his two Morgans. After
talking it over with my husband, Walter, I agreed. Our thoughts
were to sell the foal, or if it suited us, to keep it as a horse for our
two children. We never dreamed that unborn foal would be our
horse of a lifetime.
We first met the tiny, shy, mousy gray colt a few hours after
his birth in a small barn behind a little Baptist church in Lower
Millstream, New Brunswick. It was the frosty morning of an
Easter weekend, April 15, 1995. There he was! We were now the
owners of a special, 100% Lippitt Morgan. What a surprise—I
had never, ever fancied that I would own a Morgan. Having spent
many years working at the race track, I had planned to adopt a
retired Thoroughbred. I knew little of the Lippitt line, which
contains a high percentage of blood dating to Figure, the stallion
who founded the Morgan breed.
We named him Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li*. With “Amadeus”
(Latin for Love of God) being the breeder’s prefix and, with my
love of music, “Mozart” was an easy choice. “Ara-Li” became
our prefix, chosen for our two
children, Aaron and Lila. Moe,
as we call him, is by Jake Mint,
a Lippitt Morgan stallion bred
in Maine by Marshall Winkler, a
geneticist who worked in the field
of horticulture, but who had a passion
for the Morgan horse.
Moe came to live at our Ara-Li
Acres in Collina when he was
weaned at four months. We have
45 acres there and it was to be set
up as a small boarding stable with,
of course, one horse for me. Then
along came Moe, who progressed
to be far more than “one horse.”
Rev. Keith kept talking on about
Moe’s bloodlines and potential as
a stallion.
I picked his conformation and
disposition apart often, as having
a stallion was not in our plans
and would be a major decision. Fortunately, we decided to delay gelding
Moe until he gained some age and we could see what we had. He learned
fast, was respectful and grew to be very handsome and has so remained a
stallion.
We first showed Moe in the foal class at the New Brunswick Morgan
Horse Show. He was second in a class of two. It was not a brilliant start,
but a great learning experience. Morgans were a new breed for us. Walter
had grown up on a farm with draft horses. He drove his first teams at age
six. Well, the horses were pretty much on cruise control in the hay field as
his father loaded hay. I had owned and shown Quarter Horses. After this
first Morgan show, Walter commented, “I think we are in trouble now.”
Walter knew we had both enjoyed the show. The competitors were friendly
Brown at the Lippitt of the Year presentation at the Lippitt Country Show in
Tunbridge, Vermont.
and having fun, but don’t think for one minute they were not
competitive.
We continued showing Moe In-Hand as a yearling and a
two-year-old with some success, even bringing home a few
Champion Morgan Stallion ribbons. We were driving him at
two, so we entered him in a class. Our goal was to get around
the ring and come out alive.
He was very sensible, settled in to new surroundings
well, and loved to travel. He would stand and wait patiently
between classes, resting—even sleeping—in harness or when
I was sitting on him. As soon as he went in the ring, though,
he puffed up and exuded energy. He seemed to save every bit
of it for the show ring.
We found the New Brunswick Morgan Club members
were helpful, friendly and loved their Morgans. Over time,
we became very involved with the club and were taking Moe
to horse fairs and expos to represent the Morgan breed. Moe
became very well known in the province. People were taken
by the fact that he was a stallion, yet so quiet. We also went
in parades, on group trail rides, pleasure drives and took part
in fun events including CDE, horse trials and hunter paces.
They say it takes a real man to wear pink, and he proved it
by taking part in several Rides for the Cure (Breast Cancer
fundraisers), decked out for the occasion.
In 1997, we enrolled Moe in the Canadian Morgan Horse Association
Awards and Versatile Morgan Medallion Award system.
Not knowing much about showing the Morgan horse, we started him in
Morgan Pleasure Driving, eventually discovering Carriage Driving was
where he would shine. His favourite thing of all is Obstacle Driving. I
think he finds it much more interesting than going around in a circle. Under
saddle, he was started Western and did respectably in the division, even
winning a couple of championship classes. But with the big trot he was
developing, English seemed to be the best direction to point him in. Indeed,
he went on to win many Justin Morgan Standard Classes.
Moe used his talents to earn his Justin Morgan
Medallions. In 2001 Moe received two Justin
Morgan Medallions, with 1000 points in the
Pleasure Driving and Driving General Purpose
(Carriage) Divisions. To date, he has received a
total of five Justin Morgan Medallions for Driving
General Purpose. In 2006, he received the
Superior Justin Morgan Honour for performance,
by earning 4000 points in a single division. In
2008, the Justin Morgan Medallion came for the
division English General Performance, which is
basically anything in English tack, except Morgan
Hunter Seat Pleasure.
The last and most difficult division for us to
conquer was Hunter Seat Pleasure. The judging
trend had favoured horses with more action placing
above those like Moe who traveled long and
low. I believe a gentle reminder sent out from
the AMHA to judges encouraging them to move
away from this helped us last year. A change
to a Pelham bit and a few good lessons using it
helped as well.
In 2010, he earned the balance of points
needed, and he even won a championship class.
This last Justin Morgan added up to four Justin
Morgans in four different divisions which means
a Superior Justin Morgan Honour for Versatility.
These, added to the four he already had, captured
the Supreme 8,000 points in at least four different
divisions. The Supreme has been a goal for us,
and he has earned it.
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* is the fifth Morgan
to receive the Supreme Justin Morgan Honours
since the system was established in 1973. This
achievement allows the placement of an asterisk
(*) after his name as recognition.
In the Versatile Morgan Medallion program
he has received the certificate Silver and Gold
medallions.
Amadeus Mozart Ara-Li* has also been named
Lippitt of the Year three times by The Lippitt
Club, selected as the Lippitt Morgan who has
generated the greatest amount of favourable notice
for the Lippitt Morgan in the preceding year.
He also received from the Lippitt Club the Allen
Major’s Award for competition. We traveled to
Tunbridge, Vermont, twice to attend the Lippitt
Country Show and receive these awards in person.
While there—in a pilgrimage of sorts—we
visited the farm where Figure is buried.
We consider Moe “home schooled,” as he
has never had any professional training. He has
always had a lot of “go” and road trot appears to
be his favourite gait. Containing the impulsion
and keeping it coming from the right end, has
sometimes proven difficult.
He is smart and quickly learns the judge’s
order of gaits, if they are always in the same
order. As many know, anticipation can be a terrible
problem. With him, that darn well-known
“Morgan Jig” will emerge.
Being a stallion, he doesn’t like other horses
in his space. In Carriage they can’t get too
close, but under saddle if they do, he gets a little
cranky. This is not a good picture in a pleasure
class. He likes to work, and at home when I am
doing things with the other horses he becomes
jealous. The first time I noticed this, I wasn’t sure
what was happening. He started making some
pretty nasty looking faces at me. The solution
was to shut the barn door so he could not see the
ring.
We raised four Morgans sired by Moe and feel
successful as small breeders, having sold three in
tough economic times to very fine homes. They
are in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Rolla, Missouri; and
Las Vegas, Nevada. The fourth one we plan to
keep, with no plans to breed any more.
At 14.2, I have often called Moe our “little big
horse,” as he has a huge heart and, like the original
Figure, will rise up to any challenge. He is
very special to our family. Lila once said that he
is like a little brother. Moe and I have a special
bond; I often feel he thinks I am his mother. He
is our horse of a lifetime and the achievements
with him have been very rewarding. We did it
together.
Who’s on the Front Cover?
From my earliest remembered encounter with horses at three
years of age when I ran into the house crying, (only for my
mother to discover that I had a perfect pony foal hoof print
on my forehead) to riding sawhorses, I have always been
passionate about horses. We always had horses, my mother and maternal
grandmother rode, as well as my father who also worked the fields with
horses. But I never had a Morgan until I was a mother myself.
Our first Morgan was DVF Lonesome Dove. She was a remarkable
English horse, and when I had decided to buy a Morgan for myself, I
wanted to purchase a horse with similar bloodlines. Northern Exposure
is sired by Southerly Conowingo, the same sire as Dove. So begins the
journey of Robin (Northern Exposure) and Kathy.
Robin epitomizes the qualities of the Morgan breed, but more than any
other quality is his heart and mind. In 2008, Robin was Reserve World
Champion Fourth Level Dressage horse while at the same show crowned
National Champion Amateur English Trail Horse and National Champion
Amateur Western Trail. He also placed Top Ten in Amateur Western
Pleasure. Quite an accomplishment for one horse, ridden and trained by Northern Exposure with some of his “villagers.”
an amateur and a true example of the versatility of the Morgan breed.
In 2009, Robin was severely injured, but in his heart he was still a show horse. After a year-and-a-half off, and under the direction of Michelle
Hanson of Spiritwood Arabians, we began the rehab process. The first show in 2010 was good, but as the season progressed, Robin was coming
into stride. The muscle that was 75% severed, gained strength, and with patience and great coaching, we had a very successful year. Robin was
undefeated in Trail and was making his presence felt in the Western Pleasure ring that culminated with him winning the Amateur Western Pleasure
Championship at the Alberta Morgan Horse Show.
They say that it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to produce a champion horse and I would like to thank some villagers:
Michelle Hanson, coach extraordinaire; Morris Stewart, DVM; Marty Stapleton, farrier; the Red Deer Groom Team; and my family, who always
have encouraged me to pursue my passion with horses and, of course, one great Morgan, Northern Exposure, who makes every ride enjoyable.
This great horse, who “never says never,” was recognized on January 26, 2010, as Equine Canada’s Breed Sport Morgan of the Year for 2010 at a
National Awards Gala at the National Art Centre in Ottawa.
Don’t be surprised this show season!
Read this important Equine Canada information
1. Motion passed at the last Convention: All owners of Canadian owned
Morgans must hold a current CMHA membership to compete in the
Morgan division at an EC sanctioned horse show.
2. A Morgan Walk Trot Division has been added to the rule book for this
year.
within the context of the Instructor or Beginner certificate.
5. Question asked about leasing a horse - the registered (with CLRC) lessee
of a horse is consider the “owner” of the horse and for Morgan competition
purposes is required to have a CMHA membership as well as an EC
and/or provincial membership.
3. EC memberships are required to show at an EC show, including within
provinces who have decided to not join EC (these include Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland/Labrador).
A provincial membership is not required to show at EC shows in these
provinces. Our Morgan rules are printed in the EC Rule Book and to be
used, the show must affiliate with EC. Rule Book copies can be ordered
from the EC office at $15/Section or printed off the Web site at no
charge. Section B Breeds contains the Morgan Rules.
4. EC Amateurs may hold an Instructor of Beginner certificate and teach
6. Shoe bands and turnbuckles are now allowed; this will align our rule
with the AMHA.
7. Amateur card: Note, if showing Amateur in the US, the EC Amateur card
is usually accepted but, you may be asked to apply for a USEF Amateur
card or to sign a waiver. There are a few differences between the USEF
and EC Amateur rules.
8. If you have questions or concerns, please Contact Cecilia Watson, Chair,
CMHA EC Committee. CM
Equine Foundation of Canada grant
supports equine dentistry
Charlottetown, P.E.I.—A generous donation from the Equine
Foundation of Canada has allowed the Atlantic Veterinary College
(AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI)
to purchase new equipment for equine dentistry and laryngeal
surgery.
Equine dentistry should be a routine part of preventive health care for
horses, says Dr. Wendy Duckett, Associate Professor of Large Animal
Medicine at AVC. An important dental procedure for horses is floating, the
process of gently filing sharp edges and/or overgrowths on a horse’s teeth.
Because a horse’s teeth keep erupting throughout their lives, they need to
be filed—or floated—regularly. If not, the teeth can develop sharp enamel
points that can cause painful sores in the animal’s mouth, making eating or
wearing a bridle painful.
With this grant from the Equine Foundation of Canada, AVC has purchased
a Powerfloat, a mechanized dental device for floating horses’ teeth,
as well as new hand floats equipped with tungsten carbide blades.
“Mechanized dentistry floats can safely and quickly deal with routine
dental procedures as well as problems such as abnormal tooth overgrowth,”
says Duckett.
The grant from the Equine Foundation of Canada has also allowed the
College to purchase instruments used in equine laryngeal surgery.
Horses may develop a partial paralysis of the larynx, which causes
obstruction of airflow, says Dr. Art Ortenburger, Associate Professor of
Surgery at AVC. For many horses, the safest treatment is an outpatient
procedure performed while the horse is awake. This procedure requires two
very long and thin instruments that pass through the horse’s nose to grip the
vocal cords, which are then trimmed by a laser under endoscopic guidance.
“This treatment is particularly good for the larger draft horse breeds,”
says Dr. Ortenburger. “The relative safety of this procedure for those heavy
horses is much, much better, compared to putting them under general anesthesia.
As with any better way to treat an animal, students will learn that this
is possible for draft horses which have this problem, and all will benefit.”
The Equine Foundation of Canada aids and promotes the health and
welfare of horses across Canada. Past support from the foundation allowed
Dr. Art Ortenburger, Associate Professor of Surgery at the Atlantic
Veterinary College and Dr. Wendy Duckett, Associate Professor of
Large Animal Medicine display the new equipment for laryngeal surgery
and equine dentistry purchased by AVC with a generous grant
from the Equine Foundation of Canada. Looking on is Hooligan the
horse.
AVC to establish its equine chiropractic service.
Established in 1986, the Atlantic Veterinary College is committed to
improving the health and well-being of animals and humans through excellence
in education, discovery, professional practice and dedicated service to
the four Atlantic provinces. In 2011 the college celebrates its 25th anniversary
as the veterinary college serving Atlantic Canada.
