Publisher Notes I am pleased to present the 2010 year-end wrap-up issue of Business Matters magazine. With our cover story featuring <strong>Angela</strong> <strong>Montague</strong>, Executive Director of Downtown Clifton Economic Development Group and a special section about New Jersey’s role in the automotive industry beginning in the late 1800s, I think you will enjoy reading this issue. Please check out the restaurant review of Hamilton & Ward, a sophisticated, delicious steakhouse in Paterson. Not only is it easy to get to from Rt. 80, but it is worth the trip. If you like beef, chicken or fish, make Hamilton & Ward your destination for a great lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch. Next year we begin publishing Business Matters magazine on a quarterly schedule, which means that we have more time to develop content, and our advertisers’ messages will have a longer shelf life. Our first quarter cover story is about Spencer Savings Bank. Although we now post Business Matters on two web sites (www.njrcc.org and www.agreatertown.com), in early 2011 we will launch a web site that is dedicated to Business Magazine. The home page will feature the current issue of the magazine so that readers will be able to “page through” each issue and/or download a PDF. One page will serve as an archive for previous issues and another will list advertisers with links to their sites. The web site will evolve over time and if you have any suggestions about what you would like to see on the site, let us know. Our Next Issue The Janurary/March issue of Business Matters magazine features banking. Responsible Corporate Citizenship: It’s Good Business By Naoma Welk, Editor Business Matters Support for the American Red Cross This summer, Christopher J. Gillian of Pio Costa & Associates (a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc.) established a Community Connections program with the American Red Cross. The program is a marketing alliance that enables Red Cross clients, members and employees to meet with Ameriprise Financial Services for personal financial advice. Whenever someone from a non-profit meets with Ameriprise Financial Services, the company donates monies to the American Red Cross. If the individual is from a business, Ameriprise also donates a gift card from that business to the Red Cross. In addition, Ameriprise Financial Services sponsors American Red Cross events. (Roche), based in Nutley, N.J., is a member of the Roche Group, one of the world's leading research-oriented healthcare groups with core businesses in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. The variety and reach of Roche’s community affairs programs is extensive. This is the fourth in a series of articles about how the Roche Nutley facility practices responsible corporate citizenship. When a company structures a corporate citizenship program, it is good business to link its charitable focus to its own businesses. Typically, companies choose to focus on charitable organizations and non-profits that have goals that mesh with their business goals. For example, MasterCard International focuses on financial education. For more than 100 years, Crayola has supported the arts and arts education in Lehigh Valley, PA neighborhoods, where their employees live and work. Although the Hershey company makes donations to education, health and human services, civic and community initiatives, arts and culture and the environment, Hershey’s places particular emphasis on supporting children and children who are at risk. Director of Corporate Relations and Contributions, Pat Hughes explains, “While we are not in the business of manufacturing a consumer product, we focus on areas that are important to our company such as healthcare, the environment, culture and social issues.” Health/Social/Humanitarian One focus of Roche’s grant making is on specific community outreach programs that may enhance a person’s well-being and quality of life by addressing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The company considers funding requests for innovative communityfocused initiatives within its therapeutic areas of expertise, including Virology, Oncology, Inflammation, Central Nervous System (CNS) and metabolic diseases. Science Education and Student Success Additionally, a portion of Roche’s charitable support focuses on science education and student success. Roche supports student enrichment and secondary teacher training programs that emphasize science. Through this support, Roche invests in the future of its community and leadership development. Environment Protecting people and the environment is a key concern at Roche and is evidenced in various areas, from sales professionals who drive hybrid cars to the company’s recycling program and routine testing and inspections of the workplace to ensure that employees work under the highest standards of health and safety. Culture Roche believes that contemporary culture enriches everyone’s daily lives and that there are close parallels between innovation in the arts and innovation in research. To that end, Roche supports selected arts and cultural institutions that are consistent with those beliefs.
