With the widest audiences of any arts organisation
in Britain, we believe that everyone can enjoy
access to the very best of the arts. Southbank
Centre audiences are inspired by the biggest
names alongside exciting new talent through our
commitment to creating a series of world-class
festivals across our 21-acre site.
Our Learning and Participation programme, much
of which is free, aims to reach and enrich people’s
experience of classical and contemporary music,
dance, visual and performance art, and literature
and spoken word. It is the generosity of our donors
and sponsors that makes this possible.
Circles Supporters are vital to our continued
success. We are delighted to involve them through
exclusive events such as rehearsals and access to
artists and those behind the artistic programme,
all possible through a personal contact in the
Development Department.
Our vision is unlimited but our funding is not and,
at a time when we strive to become more financially
independent, donors are essential to ensuring we
can continue to offer the very best of the arts to all.

Southbank Centre’s
artistic programme
Vibrant, excellent and diverse, Southbank Centre is
a much-loved and dynamic hub for music, art, dance,
literature and performance. With a heritage dating from
the 1951 Festival of Britain, the site has transformed into
a national and international destination for world-class
culture and entertainment.
The iconic Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall,
Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery form the heart of
Southbank Centre’s 21-acre site, which each year
attracts 22 million people.
Each year, Southbank Centre offers:
• Hundreds of music, dance and literature
performances from world-class artists,
companies, orchestras and writers.
• A series of major cross-art festivals including summer and
winter festivals, the London Literature Festival, Alchemy,
Ether, Meltdown, Women of the World, Imagine Children’s
Festival and the London Jazz Festival.

Why we need
your support
Southbank Centre is committed to providing arts
of the highest quality for all: from the traditional to the
innovative, from dance, performance, visual art, literature,
classical and contemporary music, to festivals spanning
all art forms. This requires the talent and commitment
of those behind the artistic programme, and the funding
to realise their vision.
Southbank Centre benefits from a grant from Arts Council
England of just over 53.5% of its operating budget – the
remaining 46.5% is self-generated.
In the year to the end of March 2011 this consisted of:
• Grant from Arts Council England (£22.8 million).
• Income from commercial activity, sponsorship and
charitable donations (£11.9 million).
• Income from tickets and visitors (£7.8 million).

was a fantastic experience. The imaginative
“semi-staging” was very effective. What was
a great bonus to those present who had not
been fortunate enough to get tickets for the
performance was the complete run-through
of all three acts, no interruptions at all for
musical or technical reasons, with the singers
hardly resorting to “half voice” at any time.’
