2880-ALCPippas2012Sngv8_7964-ALCPippasSong.qxd 5/22/12 3:15 PM Page 6 Planned ALC Giving News News Nichols Receives National Recognition George Nichols III, an Alice Lloyd College alumnus and Board of Trustees member, has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by Savoy magazine. The article announcing Nichols’ inclusion on this prestigious list ran on Market Watch, an online branch of The Wall Street Journal. Alice Lloyd College would like to congratulate Mr. Nichols on this achievement. Mr. Nichols received his associate’s degree from Alice Lloyd College in 1980. He went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University in Sociology and Economics and a master’s degree in Labor Studies from the University of Louisville in 1985. Mr. Nichols currently serves as senior vice president in charge of New York Life Insurance Company’s Office of Governmental Affairs, where he is responsible for federal and state government relations and the company’s Political Action Committee, the largest in the insurance industry. Before joining New York Life Insurance Company, Mr. Nichols held the prestigious title of Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Insurance. He was the first African American Commissioner in the state’s history. During his time in this position, Mr. Nichols was responsible for regulating the state’s $10 billion insurance industry. He served as president of the National Association of Insurance Commission from 1999 to 2000. In 1996, he became special advisor to Kentucky Governor Paul Patton on healthcare policy and economic development initiatives for the financial services industry. Mr. Nichols has also served in such esteemed positions as Executive Director of the Kentucky Health Policy Board; Vice President of Marketing for Athena of North America; Executive Director of Product Development of Southeastern Group, Inc.; Chief Executive Officer of Central State Hospital in Louisville; and Executive Assistant to the Commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Mental Health/Mental Retardation Services. George Nichols’ success is attributed to hard work and character. His involvement in youth mentoring programs is a testament to his devout caring for young people and their future. He has worked diligently during his career to raise the visibility of healthcare needs throughout the nation. Mr. Nichols currently resides in Potomac, Maryland, with his wife, Cynthia Jean, and their three children. On Friday, March 30 th , nine ALC students traveled to Northern Kentucky University to participate in the Kentucky Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference. These participants represented the College well with both individual and chapter awards. Students who placed first or second are eligible to go on to the PBL National Conference in San Antonio, TX in June. 2880-ALCPippas2012Sngv8_7964-ALCPippasSong.qxd 5/22/12 3:15 PM Page 7 JBS News JBS Student Spotlight: Channing Everidge While most high school sophomores are trying to figure out who they are and what they want to do with their lives, one very special student at The June Buchanan School has already taken major steps towards her future. Channing Everidge, the daughter of Steve and Angie Spady of Leburn, and Jeff and Kathy Everidge of Hazard, has achieved so much in such a short amount of time that even she finds it hard to believe. The sophomore certainly has shown initiative and perseverance in pursuing her goals— and the hard work is paying off! Channing has served multiple roles within The June Buchanan School community. She has been her class president and was active in founding the ACE (Art and Cultural Enrichment) Club, which provides opportunities for academically excellent students to travel and immerse themselves in cultural experiences Channing Everidge they may not otherwise have. So far, the ACE Club has viewed multiple live shows, including the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring The Rockettes in Nashville, Young Frankenstein in Cincinnati, and Spider-Man on Broadway in New York City, as well as visited multiple art museums along the way. Channing’s spirit of volunteerism is unmatched. She has worked numerous hours with younger students at The June Buchanan School, including helping with the Elementary and Middle School Academic Teams during practices and meets. Channing is also an active volunteer with Christian Flights International, a group dedicated to improving the lives of kids in Ranquitte, Haiti. Channing assembled over 1,000 angels that the Haitian students painted and sold to raise money for their school. Art and writing are two of Channing’s passions. Last year, she received 1 st place in Morehead State University’s Regional Art Competition for her multicultural piece, “Hope for Haiti.” She also garnered high honors at the Kentucky State Fair, winning the Grand Champion award for her oil painting entitled “Winter Innocence,” as well as earning the prestigious Kentucky Commissioner’s Award. This year, Channing was selected as a recipient of a Scholastic Art and Writing Award for the Southeast U.S. Region for her short story titled “Legacy.” Channing’s extracurricular involvement is also impressive. As captain of the JBS High School Academic Team, she placed in all three of her individual events at district competition and took 1 st place in Arts & Humanities. Additionally, she is a member of the JBS Tennis Team where she and her doubles partner, Jackie Henderson, are the top-seeded pairing. Last year, they were named runners-up in the 14 th Region tournament, and they are hoping to do even better this year. The summer months usually offer students a break, but not for Channing. Last summer, she was the first-ever student from Knott County to participate in the summer art program hosted at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. This summer, Channing with be participating in both the HOBY Scholars program and the Hal Rogers Scholars program. Even with such a busy schedule, Channing maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA at The June Buchanan School, while taking additional classes at Alice Lloyd College through the Caney Honors and Achievement Program. She has already earned twelve college hours this year and plans to continue taking more college courses in the future. With such a strong drive to succeed, we know that Channing will go far in life! 3 Annual Report 2011
