Nichols Receives National Recognition<br />
George Nichols III, an Alice Lloyd College alumnus and Board of Trustees member,<br />
has been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America by<br />
Savoy magazine. The article announcing Nichols’ inclusion on this prestigious list<br />
ran on Market Watch, an online branch of The Wall Street Journal. Alice Lloyd<br />
College would like to congratulate Mr. Nichols on this achievement.<br />
Mr. Nichols received his associate’s degree from Alice Lloyd College in 1980. He<br />
went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University in<br />
Sociology and Economics and a master’s degree in Labor Studies from the University<br />
of Louisville in 1985. Mr. Nichols currently serves as senior vice president in charge<br />
of New York Life Insurance Company’s Office of Governmental Affairs, where he is<br />
responsible for federal and state government relations and the company’s Political<br />
Action Committee, the largest in the insurance industry.<br />
Before joining New York Life Insurance Company, Mr. Nichols held the prestigious<br />
title of Commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Insurance. He was the first<br />
African American Commissioner in the state’s history. During his time in this<br />
position, Mr. Nichols was responsible for regulating the state’s $10 billion insurance<br />
industry. He served as president of the National Association of Insurance<br />
Commission from 1999 to 2000. In 1996, he became special advisor to Kentucky Governor Paul Patton on healthcare<br />
policy and economic development initiatives for the financial services industry.<br />
Mr. Nichols has also served in such esteemed positions as Executive Director of the Kentucky Health Policy Board;<br />
Vice President of Marketing for Athena of North America; Executive Director of Product Development of Southeastern<br />
Group, Inc.; Chief Executive Officer of Central State Hospital in Louisville; and Executive Assistant to the<br />
Commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Mental Health/Mental Retardation Services.<br />
George Nichols’ success is attributed to hard work and character. His involvement in youth mentoring programs is a<br />
testament to his devout caring for young people and their future. He has worked diligently during his career to raise<br />
the visibility of healthcare needs throughout the nation. Mr. Nichols currently resides in Potomac, Maryland, with his<br />
wife, Cynthia Jean, and their three children.<br />
On Friday, March 30 th , nine ALC students traveled to<br />
Northern Kentucky University to participate in the<br />
Kentucky Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership<br />
Conference. These participants represented the<br />
College well with both individual and chapter awards.<br />

For the second year in a row, Alice Lloyd College’s PBL Chapter was named the state’s outstanding local chapter.<br />
Students who placed first or second are eligible to go on to the PBL National Conference in San Antonio, TX in<br />
June. We are very proud of all of our participants and wish them the best at Nationals!<br />
