They were Italian climber Cesare Maestri, but
the technical complexity of the claimed route
and the lack of photographic evidence raised
doubts that the peak was conquered.
To confirm his words, Maestri returned to the
foot of Cerro Torre in 1970 as part of a large
expedition. Within two months of work on the
wall he was using gasoline compressor scored
in the bolt granite about four hooks with which
he almost managed to get to the top, but the
road was blocked "ice mushrooms."
Maestri was forced to retreat, but, later, still
counted himself the second ascent. He
explained his position that "mushrooms are not
top and ever will melt."
In February 2012, the Americans Hayden
Kennedy and Jason Kruk passed "Compressor
route", without using pitons hammered Maestri.
On the descent from the summit they removed
more than a hundred bolts, explaining his
decision by saying that "climbing should be
clean." Werner Herzog took on the top of Cerro
Torre his film "Stone cry."
