The Avro Lancaster is a British four-engine heavy
bomber used by the Royal Air Force and Allies
during the Second World War. Of the 17 known
Lancasters remaining in the world, only two are
airworthy of which VR-A is one.
Part of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum
of Hamilton, Ontario VR-A was built at Victory
Aircraft in Malton, Ontario, in 1945.
Although the aircraft never saw active service, it
was used for post war Search and Rescue
operations under Maritime Air Command.
It was withdrawn from service on 6 November
1963 and was displayed in Goderich, Ontario from
1964 to 1977 before being stored at Dunnville,
Ontario. During its time it had clocked up over
4,390 hours on the airframe.
Michigan Airshow, Ypsilanti, M

It was saved from destruction by the Royal Canadian
Legion branch in Goderich and later acquired by
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (1978), where
it underwent a 10-year restoration program. It has
remained airworthy since 1988.
The aircraft is flown in the paint scheme of KB726
coded VR-A, depicting the aircraft of No. 419
Squadron RCAF in which Canadian Andrew
Mynarski won the Victoria Cross.
On the 4 August 2014, it flew to Britain to take part
in a series of events in the UK in formation with the
world's only other airworthy Lancaster, PA474. The
North Atlantic crossing included stops at Goose Bay
Canada, Narsarsuaq Greenland, and Keflavik Iceland
finally arriving at RAF Coningsby, home of the Battle
of Britain Memorial Flight. This was the first Atlantic
crossing by a Lancaster since 1975.
Wildlife Borneo - Another Day in Paradise
Sabah Reef by Gary Bridger
The underwater world of Sabah Reef is threatened by development and irresponsible tourism. Here is just a
glimpse of the fragile beauty that may soon disappear.
Flowers are a subject that serves people in many ways. Some
people grow them for shows and exhibits, others just for
pleasure.
Other people might not have the opportunity, space or desire to
grow flowers, but even they will look at a well groomed garden
or border.
Then there are the others, people like me who enjoy
photography.
Website = photosociety.net Page 10 email = magazine@photosociety.net

I love to take many different subjects, but when that spark of
inspiration departs there is one subject that is all around me
that attracts the attention of the lens …. Flowers.
The main attraction is really the stunning variety of colour and
form, scent is also important for me, but you can’t photograph
a scent and expect to convey its sweetness in the picture. But
we try, and will keep trying to get the image ‘just so’ to allow
the viewers senses to imagine the sweetness of the flower.
We are heading out of Kampala early to get ahead of
morning traffic, wise choice!
By the time sun hits the sky we are ready to pull
over for that breakfast Rolex, stretching, and getting
some extra supply of drinks and snacks, Queen
Elizabeth is a good 10 hour drive from Kampala so
better get stocked up and comfy…
Spirits are high and the scenery passing our car
window is changing, from city traffic to village life
to wildlife already before entering the gates we have
spotted our first elephant.
Website = photosociety.net Page 14 email = magazine@photosociety.net

We slowly travel through the park to check in at the
lodge, passing elephants, buffaloes and Kobs.
In the morning we head straight out on our mission,
to track lions with the Uganda Carnivore Program,
track them through GPS and drive straight up to
them.
Well :straight” is a relative term in the bush, it is an
adventures of its own to get to where the Lions are,
even when you know where to look.
After the days journey it is nice to have a cool
shower and head way for sundowner in the park and
dinner in the bush, while the sun sets behind the
lake, this is life at its best!
But failure is not an option, and we find our first
lions, two males still resting after last night’s hunt,
warming up in the morning sun.
We also find the leftovers covered with vultures. On
our way back, heading for breakfast, there she is, a
leopard! A park that just keeps on giving…
Website = photosociety.net Page 15 email = magazine@photosociety.net

And the sector keeps giving a stop by the hyenas den
we are just a few meters from the two hyena cobs
stretching and yawning when waking up.
A “short” drive from QE to another part of the park
lays the Ishasha sector, my favorite place around
here, with a bit of luck, we found more…the tree
climbing lions.
Website = photosociety.net Page 16 email = magazine@photosociety.net

Tomorrow, we will be back in QE for a boat cruise at
Kazinga channel…stay tuned.
A Study in Nature - Tawny Owl
Pictures by Scott Latham
The tawny or brown owl - Strix aluco - is a thick set, medium-sized owl found in woodlands across much of
Europe and Asia. Its under parts are pale white or off white with dark streaks, and the upperparts can be
brown or grey.
The nest is usually in a tree hole where it can protect its eggs and young. This owl is non-migratory and
highly territorial. Many young birds starve if they cannot find a vacant territory once parental care ceases.
This nocturnal bird of prey hunts mainly rodents, usually by dropping from a perch to seize its prey, which
it swallows whole vision and hearing adaptations and silent flight aid its night hunting.
I am no expert on mushrooms or toadstools so I do not pick or touch them … usually
but it is the time of year when people start to wonder if I am really dead or just pla
when they happen on it by accident maybe. The fact is if you want to photograph the
The Hartsholme Country Park covers over 200
acres to the south of the city of Lincoln, England. It
contains a large variety of wildlife and during the
autumn displays a stunning spectacle of colour as
the trees shed their leaves ready for the winter.
Although the fact is well known, it is equally well ignored . Most birds, insects and many larger animals
spent the majority of their lives in bushes and trees, or under leaves. Their world is not in the open in plain
view, it is hiding in the undergrowth searching for food or just hiding from people.
Most people walk around viewing the vista before them, many photographers are guilty of doing the same.
They miss most of the world around them because they have not yet learned to see what is contained within
that vista.
It helps to know what to expect in
various locations and environments,
birds in bushes is an easy one to
understand, but you will not find a
brimstone on the sandy beach no
matter how hard you look.
Know the subject and their
camouflage, after a while you will see
those critters who are trying to hide,
and may even get to take the pictures.
This series of images was taken on Cape Cod, MA, USA by Patricia earlier this year. The Osprey is a bird
of prey that feed almost exclusively of fish
The osprey (Pandion haliaetus) is also known as the fish eagle, sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk it is a
fish-eating bird of prey and is classed as a medium raptor, reaching more than 60 cm (24 in) in length and
180 cm (71 in) across the wings. Brown on the upperparts and generally grey/white on the head and
underparts.
The osprey frequents a wide variety of habitats, nesting in any location near water providing an adequate
food supply. It is found on all continents except Antarctica.
