The Avro Lancaster is a British four-engine heavy<br />
bomber used by the Royal Air Force and Allies<br />
during the Second <strong>World</strong> War. Of the 17 known<br />
Lancasters remaining in the world, only two are<br />
airworthy of which VR-A is one.<br />
Part of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum<br />
of Hamilton, Ontario VR-A was built at Victory<br />
Aircraft in Malton, Ontario, in 1945.<br />
Although the aircraft never saw active service, it<br />
was used for post war Search and Rescue<br />
operations under Maritime Air Command.<br />
It was withdrawn from service on 6 November<br />
1963 and was displayed in Goderich, Ontario from<br />
1964 to 1977 before being stored at Dunnville,<br />
Ontario. During its time it had clocked up over<br />
4,390 hours on the airframe.<br />
