Coach Red Manning turns in one of his<br />
best coaching jobs as Duquesne, competing<br />
without preseason All-American Willie<br />
Somerset (who was lost for the season<br />
due to knee surgery), wins three of its final<br />
four games to finish 13-9. The Dukes, with<br />
Somerset back, built on that 3-1 ’63 finish to<br />
make an NIT appearance in 1963-64.<br />
1971<br />
On Jan. 18, 1971, unranked<br />
Duquesne defeats No. 9 (AP)<br />
Notre Dame 81-78 in overtime<br />
before 10,131 at the Civic Arena.<br />
The ’71 Dukes averaged a<br />
school record 85.8 points per<br />
game on their way to an NCAA<br />
Tournament appearance.<br />
2001<br />
On Jan. 27, 2001, Duquesne retires the numbers<br />
of Chuck Cooper (#15), Dick Ricketts (#12), Sihugo<br />
Green (#11), Willie Somerset (#24) and Norm Nixon<br />
(#10) at halftime of a game against Xavier.<br />

Tom Pipkins hits a school-record<br />
99 3-pointers in 27 games.<br />

Derrick Alston earns First<br />
Team All-Atlantic 10 honors<br />
in leading the Dukes to an<br />
NIT appearance. Alston would<br />
go on to be drafted in the<br />

1988<br />
On Dec. 3, 1988, Duquesne plays<br />
its first game at Palumbo Center,<br />
a 73-69 win over Saint Joseph’s. It<br />
was the first basketball game on<br />
campus since the 1943 season.<br />
1980-81<br />
Bruce Atkins leads the Dukes to the<br />
Eastern 8 Tournament championship<br />
game by posting a school-record 22<br />
double-doubles. Atkins averaged 15.1<br />
points and 11.7 rebounds/g. in ‘81.<br />
1976-77<br />
Duquesne, with conference Player of the Year Norm Nixon<br />
leading the way, earns an NCAA Tournament bid by winning<br />
the Eastern Collegiate Basketball League Tournament title<br />
in its first season as a conference member.<br />
1978<br />
On Dec. 29-30, 1978, B.B. Flenory<br />
posts the most prolific two-game<br />
scoring outburst in school history<br />
with 41 points vs. Marshall followed<br />
by 48 vs. Ohio at the West Virginia<br />
Classic at Morgantown, W.Va.<br />
Flenory led the Eastern 8 in scoring<br />
that season at 20.8 ppg.<br />
