Ageism<br />
Ageism is a process <strong>of</strong> systematic stereotyping and discrimination against<br />
people because <strong>of</strong> their chronological age. It is a unique form <strong>of</strong> bias. Ageism<br />
is identified to have three distinguishable yet interconnecting components.<br />
These include beliefs and stereotypes (cognitive), prejudicial attitudes<br />
(affective), and direct or indirect discriminatory practices (behavioural) (Butler<br />
1969). It is important to note that ageism can occur in both positive and<br />
negative forms (Hagestad & Uhlenberg 2005).<br />
