FROM THE DESK OF THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families
This week we held our annual Open Afternoon when we open our school to
new families considering sending their children to Kelvin Grove State
College. It was a great afternoon where our students and staff showcase all
the special opportunities we provide at the college. Staff, students and
parents welcomed our visitors. Some parents and student groups held food
stalls which added to the energetic atmosphere. It was a very positive
afternoon that gave our local and wider community a glimpse of the quality
education we provide at KG. Thanks to all involved.
Next week many of our Junior and Middle School students are undertaking
NAPLAN tests. These tests provide a one point in time assessment of how
our students, your children, are going with some areas of our college
curriculum. These tests are based on the national curriculum – which we are
implementing in English, Mathematics and Science (and will be in History
from 2013). It will be important for students to get plenty of rest each night
during this week as it is demanding. The concentration level in rooms is high
when students are undergoing tests and NAPLAN occurs over 3 days.
Our 10 th Anniversary celebrations will be held during the week following
NAPLAN. We will begin with our Parents Cocktail evening. In the week that
follows there will be special presentations on assemblies, a lesson on the
history of KGSC and birthday cupcakes sold for a nominal amount (subsided
by the P & C) during that week. We have a great deal to celebrate and I am
confident we are all going to enjoy the activities of the week across each of
our sub-schools.
Finally, many of our students have been very busy in the arts area with the
instrumental music evening and practicing for the college musical “Glamalot”.
These events take a great deal of time by everyone – students, staff and
parents. Instrumental Music night is on Saturday 19 May and our College
Musical runs from 1 – 4 August. These will be entertaining nights, presented
by our very talented students.
Warm regards,
FROM THE DESK OF THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Open Day (afternoon) – what a busy and exciting afternoon this was. It was
wonderful to see so many visitors to the school. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone involved in the Middle School – staff, student
and parent volunteers who manned displays and classrooms, operated food
stalls and spoke with visiting parents and young people. This was an
important event for our College and I was very proud of the positive
messages clearly conveyed to the community.
Final reminder: NAPLAN testing for Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 will take place from
15 th to 17 th May. Remember – off to bed early each night students and be
NAPLAN 2012
It would be difficult not to know that the NAPLAN tests take place next week!
Our Year 3 and Year 5 teachers have worked hard with our students to
ensure that we minimise the stress placed on our students for these tests.
We do this through test preparation, discussion and support.
For parents of these students we ask that you support your child by ensuring
they have a good night’s sleep and nutritious meals. A good breakfast is
vital!!! We also ask that you are punctual on NAPLAN test days (Tuesday –
Thursday).
Pre-service Teachers
You will see many additional faces in the Junior School starting this week as
the Pre-service teachers commence their practicum. I MAY be biased but I
have let them know that they are very fortunate to be in our school with the
amazing staff, students and community.
Teachers also gain much from having these student teachers in the room. It
is great professional development for them to coach these students and to
reflect on curriculum and pedagogy.
BUSINESS EDUCATION NEWS
As we are now well into term 2, students need to be organising their study
calendars so that assessment can be planned out and time can be utilised
effectively.
Term 2 is where many interesting units are studied. In many of our subjects,
teachers have set up Virtual Classrooms or EdStudios where students can
access course material. Parents who are interested in seeing what their
child is learning should ask them to show you their Virtual Classrooms or
EdStudios via the Internet.
In term 2, Year 12 Legal Studies students are embarking on their biggest
topic to date. They are doing their Independent Studies topic which is one
that they choose themselves. This is where they pick an area of law where
they believe the law needs to be changed.
Year 11 Accounting students are comparing the Cash Accounting system
and the Accrual Accounting system. They will then be analysing accounting
reports using ratio analysis and providing recommendations on how owners
can make improvements.
Year 11 Business Organisation and Management students will be
looking at the traits of a good entrepreneur and the different avenues
people have to enter into their own business.
Year 10 Foundation Business students will be introduced to the basics
of recording transactions for a business and then they will be learning
how to prepare Payroll records. These topics are useful for when they
start part-time employment.
Criminal Law is the topic that all Legal Studies students most enjoy,
and this term the Yr 11 Legal Studies students will be investigating the
different types of crimes there are as well as the defences that can be
used for them.
Year 9 Business & Technology students will be learning how to use
Movie Maker and GameMaker. GameMaker is where they learn how to
make their own computer games. These students will be able to show
parents how these wonderful programs work with the laptops that they
are using as part of the Laptop program.
sponsorship proposal.
Our year 10 students are developing training programs designed o
target their fitness capacities and are studying tennis, and track and
YOUTH SUPPORT CO-ORDINATOR
Hello all,
My name is Chloe and I started working at Kelvin Grove last April as a
- Emotional/social support
- Practical support: financial, accommodation, resumes,
budgeting, supporting young people to make safe decisions
- Managing conflicts: communication strategies and meetings
between friends, support managing conflict with family
- Groups: I am currently running two young women’s groups at
Kelvin Grove that aim to support young women to build
positive peer networks and offer resources and support
around body image, stress, cyber bullying and cyber safety,
sexual health and healthy relationships
This is just some aspects of my work. If you are unsure whether I can help
you or not feel free to ask, if I can’t help I can at least point you in the right
direction. I am also happy to speak with parents if they have any concerns.
booking at student services or text me on 0447 385 199.
One of my favourite books is:
SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT SERIES By Derek Landy
This book is about:
The Skulduggery Pleasant series is about magic and how a skeleton
detective, Skulduggery, and his partner Valkarie Cain; go around solving
mysteries, defeating the bad/evil guys and saving the world. They are my
favourite books because they are fast-paced and funny. However, most of
all, they are gripping stories which you never want to put down.
books.
