Introduction<br />

The Mapping & the Method<br />

This report is a mapping of the <strong>Danish</strong> computer game companies done in the<br />

framework of the <strong>Computer</strong>spilzonen, which is housed and managed by the Dan-<br />

ish Producers’ Association, Producentforeningen, a 3 year lasting project seeking<br />

to create growth in and positive focus on the computer game industry in Denmark.<br />

The mapping is a profile analysis and a contact sheet of each company. In the<br />

Data Template, you will find more specific information about the details of the text<br />

boxes in the mapping.<br />

The information has been found online at the <strong>Danish</strong> company registration site<br />

www.cvr.dk, on the companies websites, divergent computer websites and last but<br />

not least at www.businessview.dk. Further a great number of the companies have<br />

been contacted either or both by email and telephone to attain the information,<br />

that was not available online.<br />

The graphic material in this report belongs solely to the respective companies.<br />

All of the companies have had an opportunity to correct, to object or add to the<br />

information presented in the report. The report will be obtainable through Produ-<br />

centforeningen by personal contact to Jan Neiiendam - see contact in the end of<br />

this report.<br />

The list will have a degree of estimation, since the companies differ very much<br />

in size, activity, field and existence. Some profiles are more detailed than other,<br />

since some information was easier to acquire, and others might lack some infor-<br />

mation, since they haven’t responded to the mapping, or they might lack since<br />

there didn’t exist information about them in any of the above mentioned sources.<br />

The product exambles have been randomly picked out and are results of an es-<br />

timation of what might be representative of the company’s products. It is always<br />

recommended to visit the companies’ own websites to get a closer and more<br />

thorough insight about what each company can offer.<br />

Under Branch Codes, Categories, & Company Structures, you will find more<br />

specific information about the three categorizations in the report. Branch Codes<br />

derive from www.cvr.dk, whcih might give you an idea about a company’s activity<br />

from when they registered - although their present activity might depart from that<br />

very categorization. The Categories - <strong>Game</strong>s, Content Creation, Tools & Plat-<br />

forms, Publisher, and Other, are very broadly framed and are mainly included to<br />

give an immediate idea about the activity of a company. The Company Structures<br />

About <strong>Computer</strong>spilzonen<br />

Major new effort to strengthen the computer game area<br />

Producentforeningen along with a number of consortiums has been allocated to<br />

9.2 million <strong>Danish</strong> kroner (over 3 years) for an Experience Zone for games - Com-<br />

puterspilzonen. With a budget of 3 million <strong>Danish</strong> kroner from the Region Hoveds-<br />

taden, a cash investment from the Producentforeningen at about 2 million <strong>Danish</strong><br />

kroner, and not least with project investments from partners in the consortium, the<br />

Experience Zone for the computergames will reach a total budget of well over 20<br />

million <strong>Danish</strong> kroner over 3 year. These Experience Zones - that besides video<br />

games are dealing with fashion, cuisine and music - are aspired by the govern-<br />

ment, that together with S, DF, RV and SF has earmarked a total of 90 million<br />

<strong>Danish</strong> kroner to strengthen the culture and experience economy in Denmark.<br />

The goal of the Producentforening concerning the <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Zone, is to<br />

establish the <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Zone as a framework that enables developing the<br />

game industry from being a potential into being a healthy, internationally oriented<br />

industry with viable businesses geared for growth.<br />

The basis of the Producentforenings work with games includes a comprehensive<br />

and timely analysis of the video game industry, which was done in the winter of<br />

2008-09. The analysis demonstrates that computer games industry is an industry<br />

with lots of life and activity, but also that it is an industry that has a number of chal-<br />

lenges. Many of these challenges will now be faced by the <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Zone.<br />

The biggest challenge is economic. There has lacked funding and venture capital<br />

long before the financial crisis hit. Today, companies in the <strong>Danish</strong> games indus-<br />

try so challenging that many have questioned whether the <strong>Danish</strong> branch even<br />

exist in five years. Some have gone bankrupt and more companies are planning<br />

to move abroad because of lack of access to venture capital and skilled labor.<br />

Therefore, both capital and business development exist as very important areas in<br />

the Zone.<br />

On the positive side stands the fact that the <strong>Danish</strong> games industry is very crea-<br />

tive. At the same time proper learning environments have been established which<br />

will ensure that the talent is being educated. However, there is a great need for<br />

upgrading of the industry and an understanding of that creativity and business are<br />

not necessarily opposites, but requires each other, if one wants to make money<br />

and be sustainable.<br />

Producentforeningen manages the <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Zone project. Producentfore-<br />

ningen has brought together the many stakeholders and partners in the project<br />

and have prepared the application itself. Pratically, the secretariat of the Pro-<br />

ducentforening will house the <strong>Computer</strong> <strong>Game</strong> Zone, but the zone is a network<br />

project where a wide range of partners come with their own specific projects,<br />

skills and professional concerns, and make these available to the industry within<br />

the network that forms the Zone. It is a cardinal point about the project, which<br />

has now been approved that the activities take place outside in the environment,<br />

which is already present and with the capabilities that exists in and may be benefi-<br />

cial for the industry.<br />

The zone is structured around six areas: Consortium in the Zone:<br />

1) Training and skills development, which aims to ensure the best recruiting base<br />

nationally and internationally<br />

2) Business development, where the objective is to ensure that start-ups and es-<br />

tablished firms have access to advice and skills in relation to the development and<br />

operation<br />

3) Capital, which aims to build bridges between companies and investors environ-<br />

ments<br />

4) Internationalization, where the aim is to make the industry more international<br />

by establishing an international network, development of export capabilities and<br />

specific export promotion<br />

5) Industry Structure and network, which aims to bring together industry, create<br />

strong networks and ensure that building knowledge of market, business models,<br />

environment, etc.<br />

6) The provision, which aims to raise awareness of computer games among cus-<br />

tomers, politicians and other stakeholders<br />

Frecle I/S was founded in 2006 by Mikkel Fredborg and Lasse Cleveland,<br />

who had previously worked for 10 years in the video games and animation<br />

industry, developing and designing games for a multitude of platforms<br />

from Amiga to Xbox360, including PC, GBA, NDS, XBox, PSP,<br />

and PS2 as well as browser based games.<br />

Mikkel and Lasse met each other at Designskolen Kolding, where they<br />

both acquired a Master Degree of Interactive Media Design.<br />

Frecle is a concatenation of Fredborg and Cleveland, the surnames of the<br />

two founders.<br />

Oddlabs is a small independent game development company situated in<br />

Odense, Denmark.<br />

The company was founded in 2001 by four computer science students<br />

from University of Southern Denmark. The first couple of years were<br />

spent on the underlying technology: A game engine that allows for rapid<br />

development of 3D crossplatform games that will run on Windows, Mac<br />

OS X and Linux without any platform specific modifications.<br />

Based on this technology and the “independent developer” approach to<br />

the computer games market, Oddlabs won a third place in Venture Cup |<br />

Denmark 2004, an annual businessplan competition for high-tech startups.<br />

The philosophy behind their technical platform is that they want to challenge<br />

the traditional platform-centric C++ development by creating highly<br />

portable games without sacrificing the speed of native platform code.<br />

The first IP under development “Limbo” is an original idea by Arnt<br />

Jensen, and was first being developed in the company called “Underholdningsbranchen<br />

ApS”.<br />

Later when the first founding from CAT Science was acquired, we transferred<br />

all assets and IP to the newly founded company called Limbo ApS.<br />

This was also because the publishers and foreign people had problems<br />

pronouncing “Underholdningsbranchen” (which means “Entertainment<br />

business” in <strong>Danish</strong>).<br />

The company name was planned to be a temporary name, and in the start<br />

of 2009 we changed the name to (hopefully for the final time): PLAY-<br />

DEAD.<br />

Limbo ApS was founded by a number of people from the <strong>Danish</strong> game<br />

industry, who were earlier involved in projects such as “Hitman”, “Freedom<br />

Figthers” and “Gangland”.<br />
