Crozet Healthcare Providers are Offering New Alternatives by Kathy Johnson: special to CROSSROADS BUSINESS Changes in healthcare come slowly—testing—more testing, then approval from various government agencies are just a part of that slow-moving cycle. Healthcare is a profession not prone to quick decisions or acceptance. Hand washing—now recognized by the Center for Disease Control, hospitals and physicians as “one of the most important steps we can take to avoid … spreading germs” took more than 100 years to reach that level of acceptance. That same slow and careful change has resulted in the average life expectancy increasing by 25 years between 1900 and 2000. Innovation in healthcare can certainly be positive. Anyone over 40 can easily see the healthcare differences between their first visits to their doctors or optometrists—even in little ways. And, some big ways can be quite dramatic. Pacemakers, eye care for infants, homeopathic alternatives, non-invasive surgery, and nondrug options for young children to improve ADD, Dyslexia, and Autism are among some of the evolving technologies. Connections Chiropractic Center and Crozet Eye Care are among those delivering what some describe as new and alternative options. Doctors Brice and Megan Jackson with Connections Chiropractic Center are working with new technology to provide “fitness for the developing brain” in children. “The specialization that I have is Chiropractic Neurology… the procedures that we use to take care of the disorders or improve them is not just say a chiropractic adjustment, though we incorporate that, but … we have different types of therapies, activities, eye movement, time and coordination activities … so, what we find in a child’s exam, determines which therapies they need.” These treatments are designed for children (and adults) with neurological disorders such as ADD/ADHA, Autism Spectrum disorders, OCD/ODD, Dyslexia, learning disabilities, Tourette’s/Tics or Bi-Polar disorder. In traditional medicine, Jackson explains, “There are, for the most part, protocols that every child gets regardless of their diagnosis. The problem, as I see it, is that the diagnosis rarely reflects the deficits the child displays. Ten kids with ADHD might have attention deficit and hyperactivity for very different reasons. We attempt to treat the cause not the result.
