Big Kids Club:
By Joanna Fuchs
Our next Big Kids Club meeting is May 29th and it’ll be
at Allison Oppeltz’s house. If you have twins over 4
years old and would like to join us, this small group
meets every other month to discuss “big kid” issues
related to school topics, homework, other siblings,
activities, sports, etc.
This meeting is usually held at someone’s home and is a
casual setting. We also try to schedule periodic field
trips. Past field trips have included,
Rock wall visit, Balboa Park Museums, Nature Hike at
Blue Sky, etc. If you would like more information about
our Big Kids Club, please contact Jennifer at
From The President
Jennifer Boaz
Well, this club year is winding down and it’s hard to believe that my time as president of this club is just about over. It
has been a terrific couple of years!!! I’ve had a great board to work with and of course, they make this job super easy.
Thank you Cathy, Diana and Nicole for doing such an amazing job! I know it’s been a busy year for all of you and with
going back to work part time (Cathy & Diana) and having a baby (Nicole), it’s been a lot to manage. You’ve done amazing
jobs!!!! I’m also really grateful to those of you who stepped up and are willing to carry the torch for next year and
future years in this club. We have grown tremendously over the last several years and I hope we continue to provide support and
friendship to other local mothers of twins and triplets. The election of new officers will be at our May meeting ☺ (but don’t worry, you’re
all in).
We still have a couple of very fun events coming up, including our annual Dessert Night and Installation evening in June. Nicole has
procured a LOT of very nice raffle and auction items, so I hope you can all make a point of coming to this event. It’s unlike any other
meeting we have. Lori and Jon Martin have offered to host this event again in their home and I am grateful to them. Either get a
babysitter and plan for a fun “date” night with other couples of twins or gather your girlfriends and make it a mom’s night out – either way,
you are sure you to have fun, I promise!
Finally, keep your eyes out for information on our 4th annual family campout in June. This is a GREAT event for the whole family and you
won’t want to miss it. Besides, this is our 4th one and they just keep getting better. Take care all of you terrific mom’s! I wish you all a
wonderful Mother’s Day celebration. I hope you get the recognition you so highly deserve!
Hang in there and have a happy end-of-spring-here-comes-summer. ~Jennifer
From The VP of Programs
Cathy Eitzen
Happy Mother's Day!
It's hard to believe, but May is here. That means
we are in the home stretch for the club year. Time
really does fly when you are having fun. Thanks
again to Jenny Gladheim for arranging our April
speaker, Amanda Romero. It was a great reminder
that playing with my kids is not only fun, but also very important to their
development. Yeah for fun☺. We wrapped up April with a very nice New
Mom's Brunch at the home of Marijo Clemons; thank you Marijo. I would
also like to thank the new moms for coming out, especially those there
with little ones. It is always so much fun to see new mommies and babies.
We really appreciate you and hope that PHMOTT can help give you the
support and encouragement you need. When my boys were small, I
remembered being encouraged by seeing moms with older twins who were
clean, well dressed, and able to have an adult conversation. I was
obviously not getting out of the house much, now it feels like I'm never
home.
This month we have our last official meeting of the year. It's packed
full of good stuff; food, elections, secret pal reveal, and a discussion on
traveling with multiples. Then on June 16th we will officially finish off
the club year with our Annual Fundraiser and Installation Dessert Night
at the home of Lori and Jon Martin (Thank You Lori and Jon!). This is a
great event where you get a fun night out with your spouse and/or a
friend, yummy desserts, can have a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, and
get a chance to win some really great stuff. It truly is a fun evening and
I hope to see you there. ~Cathy
From The VP of Membership
Diana Aldrete
Happy Mother’s Day everyone!
Especially to our two new
members, Veronica Brown and
Elaine Dobesh.
Sometimes, I still can’t believe
I’m a MOTHER. Is it really me
that two little people depend on
to keep healthy and to teach to live fully? Did God
really trust me to be responsible for these beautiful
boys? All I can come up with is a big thank you! I am
so truly blessed to be able to love with all my
existence and to care so much more for someone else.
Becoming a good parent forces one to define who they
are, what they believe in and what they want to pass
on, because someone they cherish is watching every
move, and wants to be just like them! My boys turned
three in December. I am so excited to see them grow
into little boys, and I am so proud of them. Don’t get
me wrong, everyday presents a new challenge. But
with each challenge, there’s more love (after it’s
over). So as they grow, mommy grows too. Thank you,
boys.
Also, a BIG thank you to Cathy and Nicole for stepping
up to the president’s position. Without a president,
there is no club, and this club is so needed for many
moms of multiples for the support and friendships
found here. I know all our lives are busy, which is why
I appreciate their commitment to us. Thanks again.
~Diana Aldrete
Nurturing Development Through Play
What is Play?
Everyone has a different interpretation of play as well as different expectations for themselves and for their children during play.
Are you one of those parents who feels awkward taking Barbie to an imaginary beach? Don’t worry! You’re not alone. Many parents find play
difficult. Some parents (and kids for that matter) may not have even had the chance to learn to play due to illnesses or hospitalizations.
How do you play? What about your children?
How you played as a child will influence how you play with your children. If you didn’t like imaginary play as a child,
you probably will find it difficult as an adult, too. Your kids will have their own way of playing that is influenced by their
personality and temperament. Sometimes limitations affect play. Autism and other disorders will affect how our children
interact and play with us. Add to that time constraints and it’s easy to see how limitations can affect our interactions.
So why is play important?
Play fosters a child’s development in all areas (language, motor, emotional, and cognitive) and does it at their level.
It helps children process their daily experiences. For those of us with older children, think back on how cute it was when
our kids would ‘cook’ us dinner and happily ‘feed’ us empty spoonfuls of macaroni! This kind of play evolves into scenarios of a preschooler using
stuffed animals to mimic her preschool day. Play also teaches contingency, or the idea of cause and effect. Remember that game of dropping
things that our babies would play? This early play teaches our children that they can be active participants and have control.
What are the best toys to buy?
The best toys are not toys because then your interaction is the focus. Try using things like paper towel tubes with small objects.
Hide the objects in the tube or roll the item in the tube. Use scarves to play peek-a-boo or blow them up so children can learn about gravity.
Try playing dumb. “Gosh, how do I make this car go?” or “I can’t find where this puzzle piece goes.” This will crack kids up and let them
practice at the same time. Remember children don’t look at us like we look at each other. It’s okay to be silly!
Ways you can enhance play with your child:
• Observe-get an idea of what your child is practicing in play
• Wait-finding a good moment to enter play shows your child respect.
• Listen-Come in at the same level as your child. If your child isn’t speaking, but is making sound
effects, try making some yourself.
• Imitate your child’s actions and sounds. Watch your children’s reactions when you imitate them.
Children who lead get the language they need!
• Follow your children’s interest. Try to do the same kind of play. Don’t switch activities or try to
make into something else. Doing so will most likely cause your child to lose interest.
• Be face to face. Use your body, expressions, and gestures to communicate your ideas.
• Play throughout the day! Don’t forget diaper changes, bath time, book time, and bed time.
• Try to incorporate play at mealtime (in high chairs for babies and toddlers) like playing with
pudding or jello. These are great sensory opportunities.
• Sing in the car instead of listening to the radio or talking on the phone.
• Find ways to signal when play is over and routine needs to be completed. One of the things that can
be stressful to young children is not knowing when a pleasurable activity will be stopped. Since
they don’t have control over the situation, it is a good idea to have a signal or warning so they are
ready for the transition.
Remember:
• Two minutes is better than nothing.
• You’re not always going to be funny!
• Playing with kids can be hard work.
• Play isn’t about academics or
therapy.
• The shared experience is the goal.
• There is a small window of time
when your children will want to play
with you. Have fun for the sake of
having fun and join them!
PHMOTT Newsletter May 08 Page 3

We took our first big road trip with the twins when they were about nine
months old. We rented a mini-van (didn’t own one at the time), grabbed
grandma, somehow managed to pile in cold weather clothes for three adults and
a double shot of Pack ‘N’ Plays, feeding chairs, car seats and an assortment of
toys (thank goodness the twins didn’t need the foot space between seats) and
we headed to South Lake Tahoe for a mini family reunion.
We didn’t have a portable DVD player, but we had grandma, and that was
entertainment enough. We planned our return trip so that they would sleep the
last leg of the journey, but it didn’t quite work out that way. Sawyer decided to
scream the entire last three hours, only taking a break when we would turn on
the interior lights to break the darkness. It was a great time. We knew then
that travelling wasn’t our forte.
Luckily, there are a number of moms in our club who are pretty creative at
this travelling thing and there were no shortage of tips as to how to make the
best of a long trip.
Nicole Murray knows how to get a family out the door and on the road.
She swears by the packing check-list at www.moreorganizedmom.com and
customized it to use as her guide so she doesn’t forget the little things. For
hotel stays, she recommends calling ahead and asking the staff to baby-proof
the room.
“I also ask them what kind of cribs do they
Twin Tips
provide – Pack ‘N’ Plays or actual cribs – so I know
what kind of sheets to bring,” Nicole says.
She takes two sets or buys them at local store
when they arrive at their destination: “This way I
know the sheets are clean and [the kids] won’t get a weird rash from the
detergent [the sheets] were washed in.”
For airplane travel, she recommends investing in the Go Go Kidz car seat
carrier, which can be purchased that the Right Start in Carmel Mountain Ranch.
“Basically, your car seat gets secured to this and you can keep them in
their seat and wheel them around the airport.”
For car trips, Jennifer Adams stressed that the car seat trays you can
purchase at Toys R Us have been invaluable. They have pockets on the sides
that can hold juice cups and more.
“I just filled these up with some new color crayons, books and snacks and
the kids were happy for hours,” says Jennifer of her last trip.
For one club member, her last big car trip was her family’s recent
relocation to Seattle. Rachelle Morse said that to make Pack ‘N’ Plays more
comfortable to sleep in, she cut out foam (1 to 1 ½ inches thick) to line the
bottom.
“They slept much better that way.” (You can buy Pack & Play mattresses,
but the foam takes up less space if you’re packing it for a trip!)
Elizabeth Kerr is a big fan of the books on tape (or CD), and recommends
the collections at the Poway and 4S Ranch libraries.
“They have selections appropriate for many different ages and it’s
something that the entire family can listen to and discuss,” she says. “Also it’s
a great way to expose your kids to something they wouldn’t necessarily read on
their own. One of my favorite road trip memories is driving across Missouri and
Illinois listening to Little House on the Prairie and then talking about Indian
by Rene Carmichael
rights with the boys.”
For takeoffs and landings, small treats are essential. Karen Doxtader
always travels with gummy bears, Skittles, Life Savers, gum or cookies and
doles them out during the ascent and descent phase of the flight.
“The swallowing helps release the ear pressure,” she says, “As a bonus
they love getting a goodie that they don’t often get.”
But don’t hand over the whole bag, she adds: “It’s all about keeping them
happy and distracted for as long as possible.”
There were many different tips and tricks regarding toys and other ways
to amuse the kids. Karen said she wrapped each toy individually like a present
and gave them out periodically over the course of her 16-hour flight to
Australia with her first born. Jennifer said her “go to” goodie was the mini
Magnadoodle. Rachelle said that she made sure they sang silly songs with lots of
arm movements to keep them entertained and moving in their seats. Micki
Wright said she kept a kids backpack in the car that had a collection of Happy
Meal toys from McDonalds.
Karina Fidler will have just taken her first trip with her twins when this
article is published. She was going to try a tip from a friend with older twins.
“She told me she would bring a ton of stickers on the plane and put them
all over the kids’ pants and shirts. Then she would give
them paper and they would spend a long time peeling the
stickers off themselves and fixing them to the paper.”
But pretty much everyone agreed that one item they
couldn’t do without was the portable DVD player. For the
younger crowd, Rachelle swears by Fantasia, as they love
the music: “It will keep the kids quiet for an hour!”
Though Marilyn Chesney’s cross country car trips were done long before
car seats existed and seat belt laws were written, she still had some relevant
tips for moms of the 21 st century.
Back in the day of the station wagon, each kid had their quarter of the
back area staged as their own and along the very back end was a “breakfast
box,” a “lunch box” and a small ice chest.
“We had the breakfast and lunch boxes to save money and time of getting
everyone into a restaurant,” she shares. “We took the breakfast box into the
motel and had cereal and fruit for breakfast. Then we would stop at a park, if
we could find one, for lunch.”
For Megan Streicher, this summer will bring her first long distance trip
with her two-year-old twins. She’s been reading up on do’s and don’ts and
added:
“I read [in] an article to buy the passengers around you each a drink as
sort of a before flight ‘Thanks’ to help take the edge off if the boys are fussy.”
I wish the lady sitting behind my husband and I on the red eye flight to
start my honeymoon years ago would have thought of that. We had the “good
fortune” of being directly in front of her son, who kicked and banged our seats
from San Diego to Boston! It’s probably no wonder that our travelling with kids
didn’t get off to a great start…
I received so many great tips that I couldn’t possibly fit it all in without
taking over the entire newsletter. If this leaves you wanting more, please email
me at reneqc@san.rr.com and I’ll send you the full responses.
From The Treasurer
Nicole Murray
Is it me or is it freakin' hot?! It's April, not August
for goodness sakes. Some air conditioner part needs
fixing so we haven't been able to run the air. I didn't
care about that a month ago but lately I'm jonesin'
for my air! I guess I can say I'm conserving energy
though. At least the girls are old enough now to play
outside and love it. We're about to get an outdoor sprinkler play mat
and other outdoor toys. For now the tent and tunnel from IKEA and a
bag of play area balls that I got at the last garage sale (whoever sold
those, thank you!) are AWESOME!
I'm excited about a few club events that are upcoming. First the
Installation with Silent Auction and Raffle Evening. It's on June 16th
and hopefully most of you are coming and can also bring 1 or 2 friends.
Some of the items that we'll have are Harbor Excursion passes, $50
gift card to Old Navy, Sammy's Woodfired Pizza, Claim Jumper, St.
Tropez Bakery & Bistro, Lamb's Players Theatre tickets, a My Kid's
Clubhouse Build-a-Party valued at $199, a photography session and
$100 credit to Lisa K Photography, a 2008 Buick Invitational week long
ticket pass worth $375, Disneyland passes and two 2008 Del Mar
Thoroughbred Clubhouses Season passes valued at $500.00 just to
name a few. There is a lot more but I can't name it all! The last event
is the annual camping trip. This year will be a new challenge as we'll
have baby Megan along with us, but I'm sure we can manage to find
room in my sister's 4 room tent! So here's to some fun events and I
hope to see you all there. And finally, I wish you all a relaxing and happy
May has arrived - to me that means summer vacation is right around the corner
and spring cleaning is finished (ha ha…). I took something important away from
the speaker at our April meeting - I am always looking for that “teaching”
opportunity when playing with my kids, so now I am trying to just sit back and let
them take the lead. It has been so much fun to get a glimpse at what they are
thinking about. Great advice! Thanks to all who contributed to the newsletter
this month - the minutes are great and I think we all enjoy the pictures
submitted. I am hopeful about taking longer trips with my kids armed with many
new tools from the twin tips column. Hope everyone has a well deserved happy
Mother’s Day - an extra special one to those of you with new arrivals and those
of you expecting new arrivals!
