FIND OUT WHO IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR NATIONAL
LEVEL IMPLEMENTATION PLANS
IN YOUR COUNTRY

15 min or with research, 60 min
Together with other youth organisations, research the people
or institutions who will be involved in deciding how your country
responds to the SDGs. Split them into:
Primary person or institution: the policy
makers and influencers who have the power
to set the national level implementation plan.
Ask: who is your country’s representative
or the leading department in the SDGs?
This varies country to country, e.g. Planning
Department, Office of Foreign Affairs, etc.
Secondary person or institution: the
person or group you can influence who
in-turn can influence your primary focus.
This could be the UN resident coordinator,
chairs of the National Youth Council, or a
civil society representative.
Next, organise and prioritise your targets,
identifying who you can most easily influence
that will have the highest impact.
Consider:
How could you educate them about the
SDGs? Be positive, celebrate what they have
already done in the MDGs, and highlight
the widespread advantages that securing
the #5pledges would bring for everyone
What political gain will they achieve
by getting involved? Election times
are particularly useful!
What cross-ministerial committees
are there on the SDGs?
Is there a civil society platform already
influencing the government who you
could work with?
What’s the best way to get their
attention?
Grab some colourful pens and paper and think
of all the ways to influence decision-making on
your issue. Get creative!
