Play is a key term in this thesis. Play often occupies a significant discursive position in Cultural <strong>and</strong><br />

Media Studies <strong>and</strong> new media studies, yet it is rarely studied in its own right. Moreover, games as a distinct<br />

cultural <strong>form</strong> are almost entirely absent from Cultural <strong>and</strong> Media Studies. In Part 1.4 the constitution of play<br />

<strong>and</strong> games in these disciplines, <strong>and</strong> game studies, is surveyed.<br />

Part 1 will conclude with a summary of the key points <strong>and</strong> questions that arise from this survey of<br />

literature on everyday life, technology, identity <strong>and</strong> play, questions that will in<strong>form</strong> the subsequent inquiry.<br />
