I have pleasure in welcoming you to the
Bristol Access Guide 2012.
The guide has been produced for disabled
people who would like to visit Bristol and
would like to know about access around the city
centre and to various places of interest including
shopping, entertainment and places to eat.
I also hope that the guide is of interest to
disabled people living in Bristol to give you
ideas for exploring the city. The guide is also
useful to non-disabled people who are looking
for accessible places to visit with disabled
friends, partners, family and colleagues.
Access is more than a set of dimensions and
more like a chain of events – the planning, journey,
arrival, experience of a place and the return home.
Therefore in this guide we have included:
• A route for car drivers, which takes about
an hour and takes you past some of
Bristol’s attractions.
• Access details of the pedestrian routes
across the city centre, including information
on pavements, parking, toilets, seating, steps,
street furniture, traffic crossings, Wi-Fi, cycle
paths, shared routes, public transport, taxi
ranks, baby changing and accessible adult
changing facilities.
• Access for Bristol’s main tourist attractions.
• Access to shops, restaurants, markets,
museums, cinemas and a wide range of
entertainment.
Introduction
• Access to entertainment outside of the city
centre including sports venues, Bedminster’s
art scene and St Mark’s Road with its
continental food outlets.
I would like to give my thanks to Bristol Physical
Access Chain, a local group of disabled
volunteers, who have advised us on access
to the city and to Zeynep Sert, a student at
the University of the West of England, who
has compiled the information as part of our
summer internship programme.
Whilst our access guide is by no means an
exhaustive list of facilities and services, I hope
you will find it to be a valuable source of
information to help make your visits to town
more enjoyable.

choice and independent living. This guide’s
goal is to provide this information.
The guide is laid out by business type. Next
to each address and contact details are a
series of symbols. These symbols give
information about the buildings’ accessibility.
Some entries may have additional information,
which might be helpful.
The information in the guide has been
researched with care. It gives a selection of
premises mainly in the City Centre. It has
not been possible due to space constraints
to include every shop, or business in the
guide. If however you know of a shop or
organisation that you think should be in the
guide, let us know. We will try and include it
in the next edition.
In the unlikely event that an entry is wrong,
please let us know and it will be corrected
in the next edition.

accessibility only. Inclusion in the guide is not

Are you getting all you're entitled to?
Thousands of Bristol people are still missing out on disability benefits!
Disability living allowance (DLA)
and attendance allowance (AA)
are paid by the Department for
Work and Pensions (DWP). They
can be paid to people who are
disabled or who have health
problems. Some examples are:
● people with long-term health
problems
● people with mental distress or
illness
● children who need extra care
● people with physical
impairments
● people with learning
difficulties.
People under 65 (including
disabled children)
You may be able to claim
disability living allowance (DLA)
for yourself or your child.
The amount you may get is
between £19.55 and £125.00 a
week, depending on how your
health problems affect you or
your child. You may be entitled
to DLA if you can answer YES to
ONE of these questions:
■ Do you have problems
looking after yourself, for
example, bathing, getting in
and out of bed, or dressing?
■ Do you have problems seeing
or hearing, and need help to
communicate?
■ Do you ideally need someone
to make sure you’re safe?
■ Do your health problems
make it difficult for you to
cook a main meal?
■ Do you feel pain, or get tired
very quickly, when you walk
a short distance?
■ If you can walk, do you
ideally need someone with
you to make sure you're safe,
or show you the way?
2013 changes to DLA
People aged 65 and over
You may be able to claim
attendance allowance (AA). The
amount you may get is either
£49.30 or £73.60 a week,
depending on how your health
problems affect you. You may be
entitled to AA if you can answer
YES to ONE of these questions:
■ Do you have problems with
washing, bathing or getting
dressed?
■ Do you have problems seeing
or hearing, and need help to
communicate?
■ Do you ideally need someone
to make sure you are safe –
maybe because of falls, giddy
spells, fits or mental health
problems?
There are plans to gradually replace DLA with PIP (Personal
Independence Payment) from 2013. At the time of writing the
proposals are still going through Parliament. Despite similarities
to DLA, it seems the test for PIP will be more strict. If you think
you might qualify for DLA, it’s a good idea to claim now.

accommodation, a confidential helpline and other support
services for women and children fleeing domestic abuse.
We manage five safehouses within the city of Bristol,
provide resettlement support, a dedicated service for
women from black and other ethnic minorities and
children’s support services.
Domestic abuse affects families from all different
backgrounds and experiences. One in four women will
experiences abuse at some point in their life and one in
eight women will have experienced it in the last year.
Domestic abuse includes physical, emotional, sexual and
financial abuse. It is usually perpetrated by men against
women but not exclusively.
