Fr. Greg!
By Jeannie Bitanga
When Fr. Greg Redoblado
OFM, the Guardian of our
Parish, was recently elected new
OFM provincial minister, it made
our community very proud and so
happy. Little did we know we would
have to, immediately, say goodbye
to Fr. Greg for him to take on his ••
new post for the next 6 years at the
Provincial House in Frisco, Quezon
City. So last Saturday March 2, a
despedida party for him was held at the convento garden.
It was a perfect evening full of fun and laughter set-off by the PPC President
and jokester Mike Limpe. Shortly after Fr. Joel Sulse said the opening prayers
Mike spoke about what he'll miss most about Fr. Greg, referring to his homilies
and explaining what he thought Fr. Greg's last name, Redoblado, really meant.
Everyone had a good laugh including Fr. Greg.
Mike presented Fr. Greg with PPC's send-off gift and proceeded to hand over
the microphone to Fr. Greg for some parting words but not without a warning that
there will be a timer. Fr. Greg was quick to reply that without a prepared speech it
may take him longer.
The Season of Lent
and Reconciliation
By Jim Van Vurst, OFM
Lent is a time of reconciliation:
God's reconciliation with a
wounded world. But, if we are honest,
it is also a time for us to be reconciled
with God again. It doesn't
mean that we have left the church
or even sinned seriously. Hopefully
not. But it is a time for us to come
to the Lord in a sense of repentance
for our failiags=-great or small. And
that is why we have the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. It gives us an opportunity
to do something externally to
reflect what is going on in our hearts.
Jesus gave us this sacrament
for that very purpose. There was no
one who knew more about the human
personality than Jesus. When
he said, "Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give to you" (John 14:27),
Jesus was speaking to his apostles
huddled in the upper room, scared to
death for their lives. They had failed
Jesus, running from his side when he
faced his passion. It was one thing
to heal the sick and cast out demons.
But when the chips were down, they
folded like a house of cards.
Jesus came to them not with
scolding or blame. "Peace" is what
he said-and he meant it. They had
to have despised themselves when
they came face-to-face' with their
cowardice. That's not what Jesus
wanted them to feel. He wanted them
to experience reconciliation with
themselves. "Whose sins you shall
turn to .7

God can never be "offended" by
us. The only thing that can "offend"
Him is when we harm ourselves and
others. As St. Thomas of Aquinas
says, "Weoffend God only inasmuch
as we act against our own good."
Thus, God does not and cannot turn
his back on us. When we sin, we are
GOD'S FORGIVING, ALL-EMBRACING, PATIENT,
SEARCHING AND SEEKING LOVE
Biblical scholars and commentators
say that if we do not have a
copy of the Bible, as long as we have
a copy of Luke 15 and we get its message,
we get the message of the entire
Bible.
The parable of the lost or prodigal
son is one of the three parables in
Luke 15. The other parables are the
parable of the lost sheep and the parable
of the lost coin. Since these two
other parables are paralleled by the
gospel passage on the lost son, it is
obvious that the owner in search of
the lost sheep and of the lost coin represents
God.
The central message of the three
parables in Luke 15 is about the unconditional,
forgiving, all-embracing,
patient, searching and seeking love of
God the Father. In his great poem The
Hounds of Heaven, the English poet
Francis Thompson (1859-1907) pictures
God as Someone in hot pursuit
of the sinner not to avenge the insult
the sinner reaped on Him, not to lambast
the sinner for his or her guilt but
to offer him or her His unconditional,
forgiving and boundless love. The
English mystic Julian of Norwich
says that with and in God, even in
the midst of sinfulness, "all shall be
well."
The parable of the lost son is
a double-edged parable (Patricia
Datchuck Sanchez). The father's
dealing with the younger son is a lesson
of divine mercy and compassion
offered to sinners. In the exchange
between the father and the older
son, we see a strong warning against
those who are self-righteous and cannot
share in God's joy of boundless
goodness over the repentance of sinners.
In the face ofthe father's unconditionallove,
both sons are actually in
need of conversion.
The details of the parable contain
so many powerful and touching
lessons. What is very evident is that
God, as represented by the father in
the story, can never change the way
He relates with us despite our transgressions,
mistakes and sins. He remains
the loving Father who runs after
us even if we run away from Him
and His love.
God can never be "offended" by
us. The only thing that can "offend"
Him is when we harm ourselves and
others. As St. Thomas of Aquinas
says, "We offend God only inasmuch
as we act against our own good."
Thus, God does not and cannot turn
his back on us. When we sin, we are
the ones who turn our backs on Him.
Whenever we read a parable, it
is important that we place ourselves
into the shoes of any of the characters.
At times, we have been the belligerent
younger son. We have also
been the father who is prodigal in
lavishing compassion and forgiveness
on others. We have also played
the part of the resentful and righteous
older son. Indeed, we have played all
these roles. But the big question is -
which of them do we usually play or
live?
T. W. Manson summarizes
the beautiful message of the parable:
"The parable probes the human
psyche andtouches it deeply. It lays
down the fundamental principle of
God's relation to sinful men, that God
loves the sinner while he is still a sinner,
before he repents, and that somehow,
it is this divine love that makes
the sinner's repentance possible."

The ABCs of Catholic Doctrine
By Lianne A.D. Tiu
The 4 C's of a good confession
Qualities of a good confession are
that it be concise, clear, complete,
and contrite.
Concise: We confess using few
words, just the words that are needed
to say humbly what we have done or
have failed to do, without unnecessary
details of our sins. Why we hated our
sister-in-law, or how beautiful is this
woman who wears long curly hair
and who owns many Hermes bags ....
are matters not ordinarily relevant
to confession. Confession is not a
time for telling stories. We do not tell
anyone's sins (our neighbor's or the
BIR collector's, for example) and we
do not mention names.
Clear: We confess without
generalities. It is not enough to say,
"I broke the sixth commandment."
We must mention (supposing it is a
mortal sin) whether we sin by rape,
homosexual acts, use of contraceptives,
divorce and remarriage. We do not
simply state, "I sinned against justice."
We must distinguish whether we
stole, cheated, damaged a property, or
damaged a reputation.
We make ourselves understood in
confession. We do not try to phrase in
vague or ambiguous terms or to talk in
hurriedly mumbled words in the hope
that the priest will not understand what
we are saying. This will be lack of
sincerity.
Complete: In confessing our mortal
sins, we have to tell the number of
times we have committed each sin. Ifit
is impossible to recall the exact number
of times, an honest estimate will do.
For example: I watched a pornographic
show twice a week.
Any circumstance which changes
the nature of a sin has to be mentioned.
To say "I stole a plate" is not enough if
the plate happens to be made of silver
and is a paten used for Mass. In this
case the sin is not simply venial but
mortal because of its value; and the
sin of sacrilege is added to the sin of
theft. It is not sufficient to say "I lied
under oath" if our false oath caused
someone to lose his property. In such
case injustice is added to perjury,
Contrite: We tell our sins without
making excuses or alibis. To blame
someone for our sins or to think,
"Everybody commits these sins. I'm
not so bad after all," shows that we are
not sorry for our sins.
Let us remember that we want to
make a good confession because we
want Jesus to forgive us.
RANDOM THOUGHTS
Voices from yesterday and today , , ,
By Peachy Maramba
ST. LOUISE DE MARILLAC
Patroness of Social Workers
Co-Founder of the Daughters of Charity
1591 -1660
March 15
We don't usually think of saints as
being born out of wedlock or being
married, much less being a mother.
But our saint Louise de Marillac
just that.
was
She was born probably at Ferrieres
- en-Brie near Meux, France on
August 12 (some say August 15) 1591.
She was said to be born out of wedlock
to a military courtier who was a distinguished
country gentleman of ancient
lineage and a mother who died soon
after her birth so that she was raised
and educated by her widowed father.
When he died when she was just
fifteen years old she was devastated and
in desperate social straits. Entrusted to
an aunt who was a religious at Poisy
she completed her education under the
Dominican nuns there.
At 16 she strongly desired to join
the Poor Clares, Unfortunately her
poor health would not allow it.
So her prominent relatives arranged
for her to marry Antoine Le
Gras, a young court officials- secretary
to Queen Marie de Medicis. On the advise
of her confessor she married him
in 1613. It was a happy marriage and
she bore him a son, Michel, who unfortunately
proved slow-witted and awkward.
From time to time however she
still experienced regrets for her dashed
vocation.
After devotedly nursing her husband
through a debilitating illness that
lasted for four years her husband died
in 1625 leaving Louise a widow who
was emotionally drained. Determined
not to remarry Mademoiselle Le Gras
as she was best known withdrew from
public life and puzzled on how best to
serve God. Her answer came in 1623
from her new spiritual director, Father
Vincent de Paul.
Monsieur Vincent, as he was popularly
known, had organized a circle of
aristocratic ladies to work in the slums
of Paris among the sick and destitute.
Louise readily joined them and devoted
the rest of her life helping to direct them
in their work of caring for the sick, the
poor, and the neglected. Not only that
she became his chief collaborator.
To help fund their work Vincent
invoked the assistance of the wealthy
noblewomen of Paris. Banding them
together as the Ladies of Charity, they
worked to collect funds for and assist in
his various charities.
But when it became evident that
the needs of the poor needed a more effective
service other than that provided
by these very well intentioned but parttime
volunteers, Vincent and Louise
formed the notion of a community of
women completely committed to loving
hands-on service to the poor.
After recruitmg unpretentious
country girls for this task Louise set
up in her own home a training center
for candidates willing to help full time
in the work. She started a systematic
training course and trained them herself.
She became the center's directress
and Monsieur Vincent the director.
This was the real beginning of the Sisters
(or Daughters as Vincent preferred)
of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Thus
was formed one of the 'greatest partnership
in the history of religious life.
Louise instructed them: "May you
never take the attitude of merely getting
the task done. You must show (the
poor) affection; serving them from the
heart - inquiring of them what they
need; speaking to them gently and compassionately;
procuring necessary help
for them without being too bothersome
or too eager."
However Vincent did not propose
setting up the community as a religious
congregation. He clearly wrote that,
"Your convent will be the house of the
sick; your cell - a hired room; your
chapel - the parish church; your cloister
- the streets of the city or the wards
of the hospital; your enclosure ~ obedience;
your. grating - the fear of God;
your veil - holy modesty."
Nevertheless Rome saw fit to later
recognize them as a religious congregation
with the members annually renewing
their vows of poverty, chastity and
obedience. Such a recognition was unheard
of. The idea of a congregation of
women living outside of a convent and
engaged in apostolic work in all parts
of the world was certainly a novel one.
The idea of the aim of the religious not
so much for their own perfection but
for the salvation and comfort of the
neighbor was a radical one. The whole
thing was a remarkable achievement.
There was no written rule or constitution.
Neither was official approval
sought for the new Order.
As for Louise she finally got her
wish to become a nun. She took her
vows in 1634 and her exemplary
life, piety, devotion and hard work
(turn to p.7)

March 10, 2013 5
(The Season of Lent. .. from p-l)
forgive, they are forgiven." Strange,
isn't it, how the weakest of Jesus' followers
are told to carry the forgiveness
they have received to the whole world?
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is
not about beating ourselves up. God is
not about blame. God is about forgiveness
and new life.
Confession: A Sign of Maturity
Approaching the Sacrament of
Reconciliation is one of the most mature
things we do as human beings.
We don't make excuses for our behavior,
nor do we hide from it by playing
games. We simply come to the Lord
in the Sacrament, honestly present
our sins and ask for forgiveness. God,
through the ministry of the priest, says:
"I absolve you from your sins in the
name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit. Go in peace."
Let me share something that may
surprise you. I've been a priest now
for 50 years. I've wondered in all those
years how many confessions I have
been privileged to hear. I can say, conservatively,
about 20,000 confessions.
But I can tell you honestly that I don't
remember anything anyone ever told
me. It's true! Why would I want to remember
people's sins? I have my own
sins to remember and that's enough.
I and all priests (including the pope)
go to confession. However, what I remember
is raising my hands in absolution,
"I forgive you," and reminding
all who came all those years that God
loved them with an infinite love. Some
people, I think, floated out of the confessional
with joy and relief in their
hearts. Words could not describe that
moment.
This Lent, there will be ample opportunities
with various parish penance
services to celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. If you approach Jesus
this Lent, you know he will be waiting
with open arms to embrace you.
SYA Weekend Retreat
by Rocky and Yen Chan
",We are Rocky and Yenyen Chan. We have
HI " been married for five years and have been
blessed with two children, Marion and Marco.
While we were still dating, we decided to join
the Single Young Adults (SYA) Weekend Retreat
together. Rocky was excited to join the community
because he "grew up" in the parish, having been
active with the Antioch community when he was
younger. I had my reservations. Although I wanted
to be part of a faith community, I doubted whether
SYA was the right one for me.
It has been 7 years since we joined SYA
and joining the Weekend has been truly rewarding
for us. The community has played a big role in our
personal and spiritual growth both as a couple and
as individuals. Through SYA, we have met true
mentors who continue to guide us through our
personal and career decisions. We have made
great friends with whom we share similar interests
with and consider them to be some of our closest.
The SYA community, through its various activities
like prayer meetings, masses and recollections,
has enlivened the practice of our faith as a
couple. Being married with kids, the temptation to
get caught up with "real" life can easily put our
spiritual lives on hold but despite our being no
longer single, SYA always gives us reminders and
opportunities to do the more essential things that
is prayer, reflection, sacrifice and service.
As a couple, we firmly believe that to fully
live out our faith, acts of service must play a large
role. And it was through our participation in SYA
that we eventually became adult leaders for the
Luke18 community, our parish-based community
for teenagers. As adult leaders of Luke 18, we have
to constantly reflect on how we are practicing our
Catholic faith and how we can share this with the
"Lukers" and, of course, our own children. In order
to effectively fulfill our roles as adult leaders, we
are in constant communication with each other on
how we can improve our spiritual lives. Through
brainstorming we come up with ideas to help the
"Lukers" grasp a better experience of our faith and
because of this, we ourselves find ways on how to
be better Catholics.
Although we are no longer single (though still
young!) SYA continues to be our faith community. It is
where we continue to learn and grow as Catholics. It is
where we always go back to for guidance and nourishment.
It is home.
Notice
To the contributors of the
Parish Bulletin, please
be reminded that the last
working day of Holy Week
is March 27, 2013. Articles
for publication for the Easter
Sunday edition should be in
by March 24, 2013.

March 10. 2013
(St. Louise de Marillac ... from p.4)
encouraged and attracted others to
enroll as candidates in her centers.
When Rome gave their formal approval
in 1655 they placed their community
under Vincent and his Congregation
of the Mission with Louise as
superior.
Through the indefatigable work of
Louise who traveled all over France
establishing her Sisters in hospitals,
orphanages and other institutions the
numbers and works of the Daughters
expanded quickly going beyond the
borders of France.
The distinctive blue-gray habits
and white linen headdresses copied
from the peasant women in the Isle de
France of the Sisters of Charity were
seen everywhere "administering hospitals,
orphanages and schools for the
poor as well as ministering to prisoners
and galley slaves and visiting the
poor in their squalid hovels." In that
first year alone 760 women converted
from Lutheranism and Calvinism to
join them!
If you think all Louise did was to
direct, you're wrong. She herself per-
sonally cared for the victims of the
plague during an epidemic in Paris.
She remained for the rest of her
life not only a hard working but valiant
and inspired leader. She truly followed
her own Rule to the Sisters that they be
"diligent in serving the poor. .. to love
the poor, honor them .... As you would
honor Christ Himself."
Fearful that in time her Sisters
would lose touch with the radical spirit
of service in the world and become "institutionalized"
she constantly reminded
them that they would encounter the
face of Christ in the poor who were to
be their masters. If needed, they were
to leave their prayers and tend to them
going as it were "from God to God."
Some of the Sisters even went over
to Poland at the request of the Polish
Queen who was a former Lady of Charity
herself. There they helped ease the
suffering of the wounded soldiers that
they came to be known as the "Angels
ofthe Battlefield."
When she died in Paris on March
15, 1660 followed six months later by
St. Vincent the congregation had more
than forty houses in France alone. Today
these "Butterfly Sisters (so-called
because of their distinctive headdress)
are spread all over the world including
the Philippines. It has become the largest
religious order in the world! Not
only that - it has also inspired a large
number of Congregations modeled after
them.
Louise was canonized by Pope
Pius XI in 1934. She was declared by
Pope John XXIII in 10 February 1960
to be the patroness of social workers.
Kathleen Jones, author of "Women
Saints" wrote, "Vincent's reputation
made the work possible, but it was
Louise's sheer competence in organization
and training her young women that
made the movement a success."
LENTEN RECOLLECTION - 1
Fr. Tito Caluag
The First Lenten Recollection was
given last Saturday March 2 by
Fr. Tito Caluag. Fr. Tito centered his
talk on the theme of Year of Faith,
focusing on the context of Eucharistic
Consciousness.
The forty days of Lent are a time
of intense preparation for Holy Week
which culminates in the Easter Tridiurn:
Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and
Easter - and this Paschal Mystery of
the Last Supper-Cross-Resurrection is
the central mystery of our faith.
"Since we have the same spirit
of faith ..., we also believe, and so
we also speak, knowing that He who
raised the Lord Jesus will raise us
also with Jesus and bring us with you
into His presence." (2 Corinthians
4:13-14)
For this Year of Faith, Pope
Benedit XVI asked the faithful to pay
emphasis to New Evangelization and
the celebration of the faith in the liturgy,
especially in the Eucharist.
Fr. Tito talked about how To have
faith/To believe is not a mere mental
process; Faith is an activity of
the whole person. This consciousness
of faith brings us to an awareness of
God's love, and God loves us even in
our failures and shortcomings. Knowing
and feeling His love, no other response
is possible except to love Him
back. "Amor con amor se paga. "
Faith inspires us to live it. We
profess the faith in fullness and with
renewed conviction, with confidence
and hope - to witness and thus to
evangelize.
The Ignatian 3-fold process of
1. To know
2. To love
3. To follow
is reflected in the movement of the
Mass with the Liturgy of the Word and
the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
At each Mass, we commemorate
the Last Supper at which Our Lord
Took
Blessed
Broke
Gave
Each Mass is a means for us to
Take stock of our lives, Be aware of
God's love for us and to give thanks,
and to Break of ourselves and Give to
others. We are to live this Eucharistic
consciousness throughout the day, every
day.
Christ's divinity is defined by the
Cross and the Resurrection, and every
Mass brings this Paschal Mystery
to us again and again. Evangelization
means to make people realize that we
have been crucified with Christ and we
prepare for His promise of the resurrection.
The Eucharist is both the tool and
the end goal. It enables us to discover
meaning in our life because in that one
perfect sacrifice, Christ defeated sin
and death yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
At each Mass, Christ becomes
truly present at the altar at Consecration
and then in us at Communion.
Thus, at each Mass, the community
comes together to
Remember
Celebrate
Believe
Fr. Tito talked about a BBC interview
with Carl Jung, who founded
analytical psychology, when Jung was
84 years old. The interviewer John
Freeman asked him about his childhood
and being brought to church every
Sunday as was the norm then.
Freeman:
God?
Jung: "Oh yes."
Freeman:
God?"
"And did you believe in
"Do you now believe in
Jung: "NOW? ..(moment of silence
while Jung ponders his reply) ...
difficult to answer ... I KNOW. I
needn't ...,I don't need to believe - I
know."
Fr. Tito brought out the significance
of our Pilipino term for faith -
pananampalataya, and the beauty of
its root word - "taya" - which evokes
that element of risking all when we offer
ourselves to God, i.e. itataya mo
ang sarili mo sa Diyos.
To partake of the Eucharist is to
bring its spirituality and consciousness
into our every moment of life so that
we may truly say as in Galatians 2:20
"I have been crucified with Christ and
I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.
The life I live in the body, I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me
and gave himself for me."
