This year's Buling-Buling showcased the singing talents of our different ministry
members instead of the usual dance and song contest of the previous years.
The Buling-Buling kicked off our 60th foundation anniversary celebrations.
for theirlife of prayer but for
Itis interesting to know that "lent" is
an old English word for the season
of spring. For those living in a fourseasoned
region of the world, the
very word spring would surely bring
great delight in one's mind and heart.
It is a season that follows after a sixmonth-long
dull and cold time of the
year. One could just imagine many
The Parish BuUetln reserves ths right to edit
a,,'c'es for spacs and darlty.
people coming out of their houses to
be exposed to the bright sun and fine
weather. It is also a beautiful time
where the seeming dry trees of autumn
and winter begin to bud forth various
colorful flowers where eventually they
become luscious green. Lent, contrary
to what we are used to think of,is not
only a time of long and sad faces but
primarily a season of transformation,
new life and glory.
This early, the Church, lest we
forget, points us to the real goal of Lent
and that is transformation, new life and
glory. Our gospel today is the Lukan
version of the Transfiguration of Jesus.
The apostles were saddened by the
prediction of Jesus about his impending
passion, suffering and death but
through his glorious transfiguration,
the apostles were strengthened by the
fact that death is not the final word but
the glory of the resurrection.
There will be a lot of Lenten
practices, sacrifices and rituals but we'
are reminded first of all not to lose
sight of our goal: springtime - the real
transfiguration of our lives. What is
the use of performing a lot of acts of
penance when our hearts are not turned
to the Lord.
There is a very beautiful
detail in this Lukan version of the
Transfiguration which is not present in
other Gospels. It was while Jesus was
praying that he was transfigured. One
of the pillars not only of Lent but also
of our Christian life is prayer. We are
reminded that the goal of prayer is the
transfiguration of our lives. As St. Clare
of Assisi would say,'in contemplation
we mirror Christ.' Unfortunately, I
see a lot of prayerful people but I also
wonder why they do not mirror Christ
in their lives.
Many of us Catholics base our
Christian lives on the quantity of
prayers and rites we recite and perform
especially in this season of Lent. Let us
not however forget that this long but
great and holy season of prayer brings
us to a real conversion, new life and
JOY·
Let me end by expressing my
heartfelt gratitude to all the parishioners
here. It was indeed a challenging
but fruitful two years of service for
me. I learned a lot from here and my
friendship with some of the active
parishioners also changed my biases
and prejudices of people in lofty
places. Honestly, I see a good number
of holy people who can be candidates
for beatification and canonization not
only for their life of prayer but for their
overwhelming generosity and profound
concern for the underprivileged.
Please pray for me as I embark my
task as the new Minister Provincial of
the OFM-Franciscans of the Province
of San Pedro Bautista in the Philippines.
This election remains to be a mystery of
God's mercy for me. The task is great
but the Lord who has chosen me will
give me the grace to carry on. May this
Lent be a season of real transfiguration
for all of us.
The ABCs of Catholic Doctrine
By Lianne A.D. Tiu
Yes, a pope can resign. The Code of
Canon Law (#332) states, "Should
it happen that the Roman Pontiff
resigns from his office, it is required for
validity that the resignation be freely
made and properly manifested, but it
is not necessary that it be accepted by
anyone."
In the book Light of the World
(printed in 2010), Pope Benedict
XVI responded to a question about
whether a pope could resign: "Yes. If
a Pope clearly realizes that he is no
longer physically, psychologically,
and spiritually capable of handling the
duties of his office, then he has a right
and, under some circumstances, also an
obligation to resign."
On the other hand, he did not favor
resignation simply because the burden
of the papacy is great. "When the
danger is great one must not run away.
For that reason, now is certainly not
Can a Pope Resign?
ANNOUNCEMENTS
ANGELS NEEDED
the time to resign. Precisely at a time
like this one must stand fast and endure
the situation. That is my view. One can
resign at a peaceful moment or when
one simply cannot go on. But one must
not run away from danger and say
someone else should do it."
Our Holy Father Benedict XVI
decided to resign as pope at the end
of this month. He acknowledged
what he called his "incapacity to
adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted
to me." His decision to resign helps
us to understand the role of the pope.
The papacy is a crucial office of the
universal church, but one in which the
pope is an officeholder, rather than an
irreplaceable, magical figure.
THOUGHTS
Voices from yesterday and today ...
By Peachy Maramba
ST. WALBURGA
710 -779
February 25 .
From a Family of Saints
For two years Walburga worked and
Walburga was one of a family of English
missionaries who like herself was here that she became skilled in medi-
preached in the Abbey of Bishofsheim. It
were all saints. While her father was a West cine.
Saxon chieftain, he is referred to in some In the meantime her favourite brother
sources as St. Richard who was "thane" or
minor King of the West Saxon in presentday
Winnibald had founded a double monastery
(the only one of its kind there) in Heiden-
Devonshire, England where Walburga heim. He asked his sister to govern the
w.as born around 710.
nuns while he governed the monks.
While her mother Winna was not a However when he died in 761 her other
saint unlike the rest of her family, she was
brother Willibald who had then become
the sister of famous St. Boniface, the great bishop ofEichstatt in Bavaria appointed his
Apostle of Germany,
sister superior over the double monastery
Walburga's two brothers Willibald and due to her virtues and prudence. She is said
Wine bald were both saints well known for according to the new Roman Martyrology
their missionary exploits.
to have "ruled very well" remaining a distinguished
Enters the Covent of Winborne
abbess of both houses until her
When in 721 her father and two brothers
went on their pilgrimage to the Holy
Land Walburga, then only 11 years old,
was placed in the monastic school attached
to the double monastery there. It was here
at the convent of Wimborne in Dorset that
she was educated. But because this convent
- monastery was noted not only for
its high standard of learning but also for its
discipline and depth of holiness, it is not
surprising that Walburga got a great education
in medicine and decided to become a
Benedictine nun there in 748. At that time
.too in England women of high social rank:
usually became nuns. .It's no wonder that
she spent 26 years of her life there!
Answers the Call
When her uncle SI. Boniface went on
his great mission preaching Christianity
to. the Germans Walburga's two brothers
joined him. England, during that eighth
century, was known as a great center of
missionary-zeal. It was St. Boniface's plan
to set up convents ana monasteries all over
Germany to spiritually conquer the German
people.
To achieve his goal Boniface badly
needed nuns and monks. He wrote to'Abbess
Tatta of Wimborne (she also later became
a saint) for nuns to' aid him found a
convent which he had newly evangelized.
She answered him by sending Walburga
and several other nuns under the care of st.
Lioba (also a saint), a former nun of'Wim- .
bourne who had been sent two years earlier
to help St. Boniface.
death.
St. Walburga's Oil
Ironically it was after she died on 25
February 779 that she became extraor-
, dinarily famous. It was because when
her body was moved from the church at
Heidenheim to the Holy Cross in Eichstatt
to be beside her brother Winnibald her
brother was found covered with an aromatic
fluid. This liquid began to flow (and is
'still flowing to this day) from a fissure in
the rock on which their tomb stands.
This watery fluid which is said to flow
from her bones was soon found to have undoubted
healing qualities such that so many
miraculous cures took place everywhere it
was used. Because the fluid's healing power
were attributed to her it became known
the world over as St. Walburga's Oil.
In order' to .further spread her cures,
her remains were disinterred in 893 and divided
between Germany, France, Flanders.
and other parts of Europe, It is said that
great cures continue to. take place so that
the nuns at Eichstatt to this day collect the
fluid which miraculously still flows from,
the bones only from 12 Qctober through 28
.February, They place it in tiny flasks which
they distribute' to the faithful. Pilgrims still
flock to her shrine in Germany. This' is why
Walburga is often depicted in art as holding
a phial of her healing oil.
But many stories of miracles have always
surrounded Walburga. Legend says
that she once cured a girl dying simply by
praying over her. It's 110 wonder that she
Parish Bulletin
became one of the most popular saints of
the Middle Ages.
Walpurgisnacht
Unfortunately Walburga gained notoriety
through less savory means. Because
her name and a German variant of her name
is Walpurgis (which is generally and universally
associated with witches) sound
alike her name also became associated with
witchcraft. Her May 1 feast of the translation
of her relics also curiously coincided
with the pagan feast Walpurgisnacht a night
given over to witchcraft and necromancy.
People in Germany dress as spooks, bats
and witches.
Thankfully today Walburga lies in the
17th century Baroque church that bears her
name -a symbol not of witchcraft but of
Christian healing and mission. In fact according
to the nuns at her shrine, "Walburga's
genius was in being open to God in his
calling, to his guidance, to his demand so as
to be ready in every situation to accept his
plan."
Patron Saint
Our great saint is known to be invoked
against hydrophobia and storms at sea. She
.is the patron saint of the diocese of Eichstaff
and is the local patron saint of midwives',
builders and domestic animals.
Other Names .
In Germany and the Netherlands our
saint is honoured as Wilburga, Warpurg and
Walpurgis. But in various parts of France
she is revered as Vaubourg,' Gauburge and'
Falbourg. .
I Could Have Danced All Night
By Bing Bing Quiros
The CWL ladies outdid themselves at the Buling-Buling celebrations last Feb
12 in their song and dance number for Santuario Idol. They were graceful
and elegant as they performed to a medley of oldies but goodies tunes like
'Let Me Call You Sweetheart' and 'Something Stupid' in their Valentine red
outfits. The audience certainly cheered them on as they danced and sang to the
choreography of Ms. Julie Borromeo and piano player Lester. Highlight of the
performance was the participation of our very own Parish Priest, Fr Joel Sulse,
as he joined in the finale number of 'I Could Have Danced All Night'. The
parishioners gave the group headed by President Betty Roxas-Chua a generous
round of applause for their efforts! Well done ladies!
This movie is a riveting story about a college freshman, Hannah,
SYAGift Giving at Makati City Jail
Probably more than any other season
in the year, Lent invites us most
to reflect on our life, our selves, and
our relationship with God. For single
adults age 21-39, the 25th SYA weekend
Retreat scheduled on March can
be the perfect time to step back, take
stock, and renew our faith.
During the weekend, participants
will tackle several issues most relevant
. to single adults. It will be a stay-out
retreat held at Santuario de San Antonio
conference rooms that will start on
the evening of Friday (March 15) up to
Sunday (March 17).
The Weekend is organized by the
Single Young Adults (or SYA) group
of Santuario de Antonio. SYA is a parish-based
community that caters to the
needs of single adults. It currently has
nearly 500 members, and throughout
the year SYA conducts various activities,
one of them being the SYA Weekend
Retreat held twice in a year.
Beyond the retreat, SYA sustains
the process of building and strengthening
our relationship with God and the
community via its regular activities.
There are the monthly masses held every
first Thursday of the month.which
PGH Outreach - Christmas
also doubles as birthday celebration
for the month's celebrants. During
these gatherings we get to learn more
about our Catholic beliefs and traditions
and afterwards, get to spend time
bonding with other SYA members over
salo-salo. SYA gets together every
third Thursday for its prayer meeting,
a once- a-month opportunity to reflect
and share. At regular intervals, SYA
also acts as sponsor for the Youth Mass
of the San Antonio Parish.
For the community, SYA also involves
itself via the various outreach
programs it spearheads, such as those
for the kid cancer patients of PGH
and for the inmates of the Makati City
Jail (MCJ). For the kids at PGH, SYA
drives fund raisings as well as activities
to give fun to the children and their
parents, For the inmates of MCJ, SYA
organizes donations to. help with basic
needs as well as activities that foster
creativity and teamwork (like the
Makati City Jail Master Chef where
the inmates compete for the best and
tastiest dishes they can whip up). At the
core, these programs are venues for the
SYA people to share their talents and
gifts, letting our brothers and sisters

About LENT (PartII)
Mental Wellness in the Family on Feb. 27, Wednesday,
from 8arn to 5 pm at the Dasmarinas Village pavil-
Q: Why are acts of repentance appropriate at this time of year?
A: Because it is the time leading up to the commemoration of Our Lord's
lion. Dr. Terence Ketter of Stanford University will talk
death for our sins and the commemoration of his resurrection for our
about Bipolar Disorder in teens and adults. Speakers
salvation. It is thus especially appropriate to mourn the sins for which he
from St. luke's Hospital will also be there.
died. Humans have an innate psychological need to mourn tragedies,
and our sins are tragedies of the greatest sort. Due to our fallen nature
humans also have a need to have set times in which to engage in behavior
(which is why we have Sundays as a set time to rest and worship,
since we would otherwise be likely to forget to devote sufficient time to
rest and worship), it is appropriate to have set times of repentance. Lent
is one of those set times.
Q: What are appropriate activities for ordinary days during Lent?
A: Giving up something we enjoy for Lent, doing of physical or spiritual
acts of mercy for others, prayer, fasting, abstinence, going to confession,
and other acts expressing repentance in general.
Q: Is the custom of giving up something for Lent mandatory?
A: No. However, it is a salutary custom, and parents or caretakers may
choose to require it of their children to encourage their spiritual training,
which is their prime responsibility in the raising of their children.
Q: Since Sundays are not counted in the forty days of Lent, does the
custom of giving up something apply to them?
A: Customarily, no. However, since the giving up of something is voluntary
to begin with, there is no official rule concerning this aspect of it.
Nevertheless, since Sundays are days of celebration, it is appropriate
to suspend the Lenten self-denial on them that, in a spiritual and nonexcessive
way, we may celebrate the day of Our Lord's resurrection so
that that day and that event may be contrasted with the rest of the days
of Lent and the rest of the events of history. This heightened contrast
deepens the spiritual lessons taught by the rest of Lent.
