WELCOME TO THE HARDING LECTURES
Dear friends,
Welcome to the campus of Harding University and to our 92nd annual Bible Lectureship! Lectureship is a tradition
that is as old as the University itself. Harding began as a college where faith permeated the campus. It is our prayer
and our goal that such faith still shapes all that we do here. In our most recent mission statement, we reaffirm that
“we are, at our core, a Christian university.” The annual Bible Lectureship is a cherished expression of our longstanding
commitment to teach the word of God and to serve the church.
One of my favorite stories from Lectureship took place a few years ago when I found a friend of mine in the McInteer
rotunda as people were packing up and heading home after the four-day event had concluded. I asked him how
his experience had been, and he said, “Incredible!” He told me that he was heading back to his home state to share
with his preaching friends what he had experienced. He said, “I’m going to tell them that at Harding University
they still believe the Bible, and they’re not mad at anybody!” I chuckle every time I remember my friend’s words, but I think he said it well;
our annual Bible Lectureship seeks to proclaim clearly and boldly the inspired Scriptures with a gentle, kind, loving and Christ-like spirit.
Again, welcome to campus! I pray that your experience here this week is helpful, uplifting, inspirational, challenging and spiritually refreshing.
And I hope you will go home and tell people that you found a special event that takes place at the end of September each year on the
campus of Harding University where “they still believe the Bible, and they’re not mad at anybody!”
May the Lord bless you richly,
Bruce D. McLarty
President
Dr. Bruce D. McLarty
President
Dear guests,
“The disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Why do you speak to the people in parables?’ Jesus replied,
‘The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you but not to them.
Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what
he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to the people in parables.’” MATTHEW 13:10-13
I join Dr. McLarty in welcoming you to Lectureship! It is our prayer that you will leave this year’s Lectureship with
an abundance — an abundance of knowledge about the message of the parables, an abundance of insight into the
secrets of the kingdom, and most of all an abundance of appreciation for Jesus, the master teacher!
We have assembled a lineup of dynamic speakers to unlock the treasures of the parables. My thanks to them for
their willingness to share the fruits of their scholarship.
In addition, the Lectureship Committee spent many months in careful preparation. I am indebted to Scott Adair, Dan Williams
Tom Alexander, Andrew Baker, Dale Manor, Karl McLarty, Sherry Pollard, Bill Richardson, Steve Reeves, Daniel
Stockstill, Devin Swindle, Phil Thompson, Anessa Westbrook and Noel Whitlock for their vital contributions. I am
Lectureship Director
especially grateful to Teresa Castleman, my administrative assistant, for her creative suggestions and her invaluable work in coordinating the
many moving parts that make up this annual event.
Finally, our deepest appreciation goes to you, our Lectureship guests, for your support and encouragement, your active participation in this
program, and above all for your work in the kingdom.
Dr. Dan Williams
Lectureship Director
(All room assignments subject to change)
Understanding Islam:
Muhammad to Atheism to Christ
Wissam Al-Aethawi, Heritage Auditorium
In April 2011, I left my home country searching for
religious freedom. In January 2014, I went back to
the same community I escaped from for the same
reason — the gospel of Christ. What happened in
between, and how did it all start?
Does Paul Belong in Our Century?
Creating Bibles in Our Own Image
Rick Oster, Cone Chapel
Throughout much of Christian history, the Apostle
Paul was regarded as one of the great heroes of Christian
faith and piety. In recent generations, however,
some have felt embarrassment or even hostility
toward this apostle to the Gentiles. This session will
briefly summarize and evaluate some reasons for this
rejection of Paul.
How to Interpret the Parables, part 1
Allen Black, McInteer 150
These three sessions will provide an introduction to
the parables, an overview of how the parables have
been interpreted, and practical guidelines concerning
how they ought be interpreted.
Matthew 25: Three Parables of the End, part 1
Tommy South, McInteer 233
Jesus told the parables of the 10 virgins, the talents,
and the sheep and goats to prepare his disciples for
the end. They apply just as much to the church
today as when Jesus told them, so it is vital that we
understand them in their context to know what they
do and don’t teach.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
E-Church: Beyond the Distractions, part 1
Andrew Baker and Jim Miller, McInteer 125
Social media can distract and interrupt our lives, but
these digital tools can also be strong forces for good.
Join us as we explore how churches and individuals
can move beyond the distractions and use social
media to benefit the kingdom.
Youth in Family Ministry:
The Current Crisis in Youth Ministry
Luke Dockery, McInteer 145
Churches recognize that traditional ways of doing
youth ministry do not seem to be leading our young
people to a lifelong faith in Jesus Christ. Scripture
repeatedly emphasizes the importance of the physical
family and the faith family when it comes to
discipling young people, so this series will focus on
developing a family-centered youth ministry in the
local congregation.
When Life Overwhelms Me:
Where Can I Find Help? (Psalm 121)
John Dobbs, McInteer 225
Everyone faces times when the events of life and
ministry feel overwhelming. In such times we look to
God for help, peace and favor. These three sessions
will focus on three Psalms and seek to find help when
the waters of life would have engulfed us if it had not
been for the Lord.
Re-visioning the Adult Bible Class: What Do You
See Now and How Is That Working For You?
Steve Griggs, McInteer 229
If we could see our current adult Bible classes
through the eyes of Jesus, it could help us to
move from through an information focus to a transformational
one. This presentation will discuss ways
we can structure our Bible classes in the style of Jesus.
The Parable of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven
Chris Fifer, McInteer 230
A Practical Road Map to Help Us Reach out to
Our World, part 1
Artie Shaffer, McInteer 353
So very often we teach and preach about sharing our
faith, but our members are at a loss where to begin.
We will explore together not a system or a program
but practical ways we can interact with our friends
and coworkers to help bring them closer to Christ.
Knowing Jesus, Loving Truth: A Gentle Offer in a
Skeptical Age, part 1
Kraig Martin, McInteer 234
We learn from Scripture that eternal life is knowing
the Father and the Son, and we learn that people
perish for “refusing to love the truth.” In this age of
a million voices, one can easily feel defeated by the
prospect of a search for knowledge or truth. How
should the church respond to this present skepticism?
Pure Heart Vision: Paying for Ministry Without
Auctioning the Gospel, Two Sides of a Table — How
to Pay Ministers: Elders of the Church, part 1
Randy Willingham and Kent Houck, Liberty Room
This daylong series will discuss crucial questions about
several different aspects of ministers’ compensation.
9 and STUDENT CHAPELS
10 a.m. Martin Musyimi, Benson Auditorium
10 a.m. MONDAY CLASSES
Understanding Islam: The Untold Story
Wissam Al-Aethawi, Heritage Auditorium
Islam is the inevitable result of how some Bible
characters showed instances of a lack of faith in God’s
plan. Learn about five of those acts — and a lucky
man who happened to be in the right place at the
right time.
Does Paul Belong in Our Century?
Paul’s View of Creation and Gender
Rick Oster, Cone Chapel
How to Interpret the Parables, part 2
Allen Black, McInteer 150
Matthew 25: Three Parables of the End, part 2
Tommy South, McInteer 233
E-Church: Beyond the Distractions, part 2
Andrew Baker and Jim Miller, McInteer 125
Youth in Family Ministry:
The Physical Family, the Faith Family, and Spiritual
Luke Dockery, McInteer 145
When Life Overwhelms Me:
Where Can I Find Peace? (Psalm 122)
John Dobbs, McInteer 225
Re-Visioning the Adult Bible Class: What a Jesus-
Style Adult Bible Class Might Look Like
Steve Griggs, McInteer 229
Using the example of Jesus and his relationship with
the 12, this presentation will outline ways to plan/
structure our adult Bible class time so that we engage
adults in a Jesus-style experience.
Rake Your Leaves (and Other Things I Wish My
Neighbor Would Do): The Parable of the Friend
at Midnight
Johnny Hobbie, McInteer 230
If someone comes to our front door, it must be a
stranger because no one in our small town uses front
doors anymore. Could there be a connection between
our neighbors, the way we welcome strangers, our
prayers, and our expectations from God? When Jesus
told us to ask, seek and knock, he told us a lot about
those on both sides of the door.
Chris Altrock
Chris Altrock grew up in an unchurched home
and came to faith in Jesus through the efforts
of a teenager and a small church of about 20
in rural New Mexico. He’s been married to his
wife, Kendra, for 26 years and is the father
of Jordan, a student at Lipscomb University,
and Jacob, a student at Harding Academy
in Memphis. Chris has a M.Div. and D. Min.
from Harding School of Theology in Memphis,
Tennessee, and for 17 years he’s preached at
Highland Church of Christ. He is the author of
(All room assignments subject to change)
Questions We Wish We Could Ask at Church,
part 1
Ross Cochran, McInteer 150
Certain topics may be avoided due to their potential
volatility. But unity calls us to respect each other
while, and after, we disagree. Three such questions
will be explored: (1) How should we view Christfollowers
in other Christian traditions? (2) What is
the eternal destiny of those who never heard of Jesus?
(3) How should the church respond to the issues surrounding
homosexuality?
More Than Just Another Evangelical Church, part 1
Dan Chambers, McInteer 125
“Could you tell me something about the church of
Christ?” “Could you tell me the difference between
the church of Christ and the ___________ church?”
If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of questions
like these, then this three-part series is for you. You
can expect to walk away from this series not only
with renewed confidence in being able to share the
restoration idea with others but also with a renewed
conviction that being a New Testament-shaped
church is still a goal worth pursuing.
Maintenance to Missional, part 1
Steve Cloer, McInteer 145
Shepherding: Gifted to Equip or Mentor
Leon Barnes, McInteer 229
Every eldership I’ve ever worked with struggled to
find the balance between eldering and shepherding.
The constant pressure is on them for decisions, and
it makes it extremely difficult to get to the people to
help them grow and become mature in the faith to
be ones who win others for Christ. How in the world
The Care and Feeding of Missionaries:
Serving Those Who Serve
Dale Hawley, McInteer 253
The lives of missionaries can be highly stressful.
Learning a new culture, speaking a different language,
living far from family and friends, and wrestling
with how to most effectively serve God in a
mission point can be a significant challenge. This
session will focus the importance of missionary care
and how to provide spiritual and emotional encouragement
to those we support.
Women’s Program: Power of Storytelling
Calandra Cook, McInteer 233
Storytelling was one of the primary teaching strategies
of Jesus. Not only did he use parables to explain the
nature and will of God, but he also used them to connect
to his listeners. We can learn how to make similar
explanations and connections with our own stories.
Women’s Ministry:
Anessa Westbrook, McInteer 225
In this presentation Westbrook, who recently completed
her dissertation on factors contributing to the
recognition of need for spiritual development among
college-aged students, will share insights gleaned on
the important role women play in the lives of young
women during their developmental years.
The Seduction of Wealth:
The Parable of the Rich Fool
Steve Reeves, McInteer 230
The enticement of wealth presents a formidable challenge
to Christians. The lure of larger salaries, bigger
houses, newer cars and stockpiles of “stuff” distorts
Godly values. Jesus brings us back to reality in the
parable of the rich fool found in Luke 12:13-21.
Black Presence in Restoration History, part 2
Missionary Family Care
Dale Hawley, McInteer 253
Missionary families are in a unique situation. Living
with a foot in two worlds, they balance cross-cultural
dynamics with everyday family life. While life on the
field is often a rich experience for families, it comes
with challenges. This session will focus on fostering
healthy families in the field and how those of us at
Laurie Walker, McInteer 233
Jesus has harsh words for a fig tree without figs —
even though figs were out of season! This seemingly
bizarre behavior on the part of Christ has much to
say to today’s Christians. How are we doing in our
quest to “bear fruit” for the kingdom?
it can be really fun! Come and find out how to share
Shepherding: Befriending Your Preacher
Stephen Teel, McInteer 229
The class will stress the positive ways that elders can
make their preacher a friend, to the mutual benefit
of both. What practical things can be done cultivate
honest and open relationships? What is to be
avoided? How do the biblical examples of David and
Jonathan and Paul and Barnabas speak to this goal?
Missionary Teams: The Shelter of Each Other
Dale Hawley, McInteer 253
Going to the mission field with a team can be a lifesaver
and a point of great frustration at the same time!
Team members provide an oasis of support in foreign
culture, but they can also a source of conflict. This
session will explore dynamics unique to mission teams
and offer ideas about working together successfully.
An Indigenous Model From Albania
Bledar Valca, McInteer 233
This session deals with the solution to the combined
problem of training church workers who are already
doing the work by native preachers who are already
busy in their ministry while at the same time combining
the experience and interest of foreign supporters.
we can be, all we can do but only if we dream in the
Lord. Dreaming in Christ allows him to work in us
and through us to accomplish his mission for our
lives. This session will focus on how our dreams can
become avenues to glorify God.

Orpheus J. Heyward
Orpheus Heyward was baptized into Christ in
November 1996 by his uncle. In June 1999, he
received a $10,000 scholarship from Newark
Church of Christ to attend Southwestern Christian
College where he completed the two-year
biblical curriculum. In October 2003, Heyward
was hired at West End Church of Christ as assistant
minister. During this time, he received
his B.S. degree in Biblical studies from Amridge
University. He also earned his M.A. in theology
World of the Parables:
Agrarian Customs in Jesus’ Day
Dale Manor, Cone Chapel
Many of Jesus’ parables draw from everyday life; this series
will consider the daily life contexts of these stories,
noting their agricultural, economic and social settings.
Colossians: Introductory Matters
Everett Ferguson, Heritage Auditorium
How Church Leaders Can Strengthen the Families
in Their Congregation
Trey Morgan, McInteer 150
In these three lessons, Morgan will be discussing
“why and how” churches should be focusing
on building strong marriages and families. Strong
families make strong churches that make strong communities
that make a strong nation. We cannot over
look this ministry.
What the Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage
Means for Churches and Ministers, part 1
Noel Whitlock, moderator, with panel, McInteer 125
Earlier this year the highest court in our land issued a
ruling recognizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. In
these two sessions our panel of experts will discuss the legal
and spiritual implications for churches and ministers.
New Tools to Connect With Seekers in America
John Reese, McInteer 145
Conversational Evangelism
Bob Brown, McInteer 229
Evangelism is conducted in many forms and contexts,
but the most common and effective format is
through personal conversation. It was the practice of
our Lord and the first century Christians. Today it is
still highly effective.
The Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector:
Two Ways to Be Saved
Ken Stegall, McInteer 230
Jesus used parables to illuminate vital kingdom
truths to those who “had ears to hear” (i.e. “wanted
to learn”). This story contrasts the results of lawrighteousness
and imputed righteousness, specifically
spotlighting the negative effects of thinking you must
be “good enough” to go to heaven.
The Urgency of Evangelism
Bob Brown, McInteer 229
All of us agree that everyone needs to saved. However
we sometimes think and behave as if we and those we
teach are going to live forever. But we won’t.
The story of the rich man and Lazarus provides a
Women’s Program: Workers in the Vineyard —
Pride, Greed and Forgiveness
Chelsie Grate, McInteer 233
Do we allow our pride and greed to limit the kingdom?
Pride and greed seem trivial sometimes, yet sin is sin. As
we examine the parable of the workers in the vineyard
together, let us look at our own lives and seek to be
more like Jesus and less like the world that entangles us.
Larry Hunt, McInteer 233
The recent work of popular atheists/agnostics such as
Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss, Stephen Hawking
and Neil deGrasse Tyson rests, ultimately, not on
scientific but philosophical assumptions. This session
will critique the most fundamental of these assumptions
best explanation forthe existence of the natural world.
Celebration of Ministry Dinner
A special feature again this year is the Celebration of Ministry Dinner at 4:30 p.m. Monday before the evening lecture. Guests include
elders, ministers of all kinds (children’s, education, outreach, prison, pulpit, seniors, worship, youth and family, etc.), along with their
Helping the Helper
On Tuesday of Lectureship, the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and the Harding University Counseling Center will offer their annual
