The country is called “Africa in miniature” because of its geological and cultural diversity. It includes natural features including beaches, mountains, deserts, rain forests and savannas. Cameroon is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Dr. Romocki has been a resident of Creedmoor since 1991 and is married to Tim Dr. LaHoma Romocki Romocki, who is a former Peace Corps volunteer. Tim Romocki currently works as the Director of the Debt Management Section of the NC Department of the State Treasurer’s office in Raleigh. They have two children, Rozalia, 17 and Moses, 14. LaHoma was a girl scout troop leader before leaving for Cameroon and often attended sporting events of the SGAA where her children participated in team sport activities. D r . Romocki has committed her career to helping to increase awareness of global health problems. Prior to her announcement as Country Director in January 2010, Romocki served as Chair and faculty member in the Department of Public Health Education at North Carolina Central University. She also had an adjunct appointment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She led the NCCU team as part of a successful grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support efforts to build partnerships with multiple stakeholders and increase health research literacy. Her past accomplishments including leading a team of public health students to Ghana, West Africa during the summer months. In November, 2007, she received the President’s Award and in June 2008, she was awarded the Franklin H. Williams Award LaHoma meets with other Peace Corps workers in Cameroon. for outstanding service from Peace Corps in a ceremony at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. Since March 2008, Dr. Romocki has served as a consultant on the United States Agency for International Development. Last year she traveled to Kenya, East Africa where she assessed combination HIV prevention programming activities. Romocki also has extensive field experience in sub-Saharan Africa and speaks French. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer (80-82) and later returned to the Central African Republic (CAR) as the Associate Director for Health Programs (84-87), serving as the Acting Director in the absence of the Country Director. Romocki lived in Cameroon (87-89) and consulted for a number of non-governmental agencies as well as the National AIDS Control Program. She has over 25 years of experience managing programs to advance public health objectives. Her extensive experience includes creating strategic communication plans, developing corporate marketing and educational materials, and designing and implementing complex statewide, national and international public health programs. Dr. Romocki has developed health communication and training programs on reproductive health and HIV/AIDS in various contexts and settings. She led the Research Triangle Park based Family Health International(FHI)’s efforts to develop communication strategies for national AIDS programs. She provided technical assistance in conducting information and training needs assessments, developed educational materials, and designed training curricula in fifteen (15 countries). Dr. Romocki served as a senior policy analyst for the White House Office of National AIDS Policy to coordinate and provide support on international AIDS issues. At the North Carolina Division of HIV/AIDS, Dr. Romocki monitored and evaluated statewide AIDS prevention activities and services at local health departments, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and community-based education and risk reduction programs. She has worked closely with research organizations to integrate and communicate findings to service providers, policy-makers, and community stakeholders and she served on the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and Public Health’s Task Force on Health Literacy. Granville Health System (GHS) announced that L. Lee Isley, GHS Chief Executive Officer, has been chosen to help set policy for the state’s hospital trade association. Isley recently began a threeyear term as an at-large member of the board of trustees of the North Carolina Hospital Association. “I am pleased to have this opportunity to continue working with the North Carolina Hospital Association,” said Isley. “It is important that our community and Granville Health System have a voice determining the direction of health care policy in North Carolina.” Isley joins three other hospital administrators and a physician as incoming members of the 22-person board. “We are delighted to have Lee Isley joining our board and greatly appreciate his commitment,” said Bill Pully, president of the organization that represents 130 hospitals and health systems statewide. “Lee has demonstrated great leadership at his hospital, particularly on quality issues, insisted that he didn’t order the car bomb that could have killed Kristina, had Johnny not pulled her away in time. Anyone interested in volunteering or having their child participate in the camp, you may attend this informative meeting on May 10th at 6:30 p.m. Camp highlights will be Bible study, recreation, educational workshops, field trips and work studies. SUMMER READING VGBN MEETING The Vance-Granville Business Network meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 7:30 – 8:30 am. The Vance-Granville Business Network was formed in 2007.
