South Granville held
off the hard charging
Northwood Chargers for a
40-30 homecoming win.
The Vikings and the
Chargers traded
possessions and battled to
a scoreless first quarter.
The Chargers got on
the board first in the
second quarter on a 22-
yard pass completion for a
touchdown. Northwood
led 7-0 after converting
the extra point.
The South Granville
backfield was featured on
the next drive. Sean
Bowman and Kenny Walls
zipped through the holes
opened by the offensive
line for a total of 31 yards.
While Northwood waited
for the next running back
carry, Taz Strudwick
slipped past defenders and
was wide open to receive
a 43-yard touchdown pass
from Matt McCutcheon.
Corey Phillips converted
the extra point to tie the
score at 7 all with 4:24
remaining in the second
quarter.
Northwood kicked a
23-yard field goal to take
a 10-7 lead at the half.
The Vikings went to the
air on the first series in the
second half. McCutcheon
found Craig Wilkie open
for a 27-yard reception.
Walls found open running
after the pass play and
ripped off 15 yards in four
carries. McCutcheon
found Josh Lawler open
deep in the end zone for a
19-yard touchdown pass
with 7:36 to go in the third
quarter. The extra point
was blocked and the
Vikings held a 13-10 lead.
South Granville decided to
grind it out on the next
possession. McCutcheon,
Walls, Brysen Thorpe and
Casey Flowers carried the
ball on this drive. Thorpe
scored on a one yard run
with 2:41 remaining in the
third quarter. Phillips
converted the extra point
and South Granville led
20-10.
The Vikings’ defense
shut down the next
Northwood drive and
forced a punt. South
Granville and Northwood
literally rode Walls’ back
on the next touchdown.
The Chargers looked to
have Walls stopped at the
five, but his sheer will and
determination allowed
him to score. Phillips
added the PAT and South
Granville led 27-10.
Cory Lomena picked
off a Charger pass at the
34-yard line and turned on
the after burners to race
away from the Northwood
defenders for a 66-yard
touchdown. The extra
points failed and South
Granville held a 33-10
lead.
Walls again broke the
Chargers with a 67-yard
touchdown run with 6:36
left in the game. Phillips
converted the extra points
and the Vikings held a 40-
10 lead.
Northwood made the
final six minutes of the
game interesting by
scoring three touchdowns
to make the final score 40-
30in favor of the Vikings.
Kenny Walls led the
Vikings with 161 yards
rushing on 20 carries.
with 56 yards on 13
carries. Brysen Thorpe
