The Communications Lifeline of the Gizeh Shriners of British Columbia and Yukon 2013

Potentates Message…
Nobles, thank you for electing me to be your Potentate for 2013.
It has taken me thirty seven years to arrive at this pinnacle in my life.
Life has been extremely kind to me over the years. Being born prior to WW 2
had disadvantages but it did have many, many advantages. It meant that after
high school you had a choice of many careers to follow. At age eighteen you had
all the world at your doorstep. It was your choice how high you wanted to make
that next step. Most men my age were never unemployed or at least not for long.
I like many other Freemasons have spent most of their lives in the construction
industry.
I was extremely lucky I started out as a construction tìmekeeper and cost
accountant. Then spent the next 40 years in the construction industry in and
around B.C.
I joined Maple Leaf Lodge in 1967, then York Rite, Scottish Rite and the Shrine
in 1976. I served my lodge as Worshipful Master in 1972 then as District Deputy
in 1987-88. In 2005 the members of Grand Lodge saw fit to elected me as Junior
Grand Warden. In 2008 I was again elected and served as Grand Master of the
Grand Lodge of B.C. and Yukon.
I have served the shrine for the past 37 years in many offices but 27 wonderful
years with the Gizeh Shrine Provost Corps. Housing Chairman for the Imperial
Shrine in 2002. Also a 20 year member (emeritus) as an Assistant of the Imperial
Marshall Staff and emeritus member of the Colorado Corporation. My hobbies
were motorcycles (Harleys) and flying.
The shrine has been good to Lady Laura and me, so now it is time for us to
pay it back. We have a great young divan who are committed to serving you and
to make the necessary changes but still maintain the proud traditions of Gizeh
Shriners.
We must all strive for new and younger members, not only for the Shrine
but we must be cognizant of the fact that it all starts at the lodge level. Lodge
members should not be afraid of losing members to the shrine. Please remember
that only 20 percent of Freemasons are Shriners. But 75 percent of Shriners are
dedicated hard working Freemasons. All Shrine Nobles are dedicated men of
your neighbourhood, raising funds that are used for the relief of our children, this
ís the reason we became Shriners. Remember Shriners Hospitals are world class
hospitals for the betterment of physically challenged
children.
We as Freemasons and Shriners must project
a persona of self satisfaction and pride in our
fraternity and also in our friends and community.
Help us focus on Membership, Fellowship,
Fundraising, and above all have fun doing it.
On behalf of Lady Laura and me, Nobles thank
you for affording us 37 fantastic Shrine years.
Yours in the Faith,
SHRINERS DRAW FOR KIDS 2013
Nobles,
We require your assistance in the worst way.
As most of you are aware, the B.C. Gaming Commission have tightened
the gaming regulations and it is much harder to have our Gaming Grants
approved. This will put a real strain on the transportation system due
to the lack of funding so I am asking every Noble in Gizeh to buy a
book of tickets for the Shrine Draw for Kids. To make this as easy as
possible, I have attached a request form and all that is required is fill it
in, cutting it out and mailing it in to Gizeh filling out the # of required
books. Send it to Gizeh Shriners, 3550 Wayburne Drive, Burnaby, BC
V5G 3K9 Attn: Lorne Donaldson.
As the adage goes, “Desperate times call for desperate measures”.
2013 Shriners Draw for Kids Request Form
The 2013 Shriners Draw for Kids will begin May 7. Again we are asking all Nobles to participate
by buying or selling books of tickets. Please fill out this form and return it to Gizeh Headquarters
giving your approval to receive books of tickets. Each book is $45.00.
Or request your books by email at: lorne.donaldson@shaw.ca . No credit cards accepted.
Vernon &
Okanagan Update
by Jake Terpstra
Our Nobles certainly know when the New Year has
started in earnest here in Vernon. It starts off with the
Winter Carnival Parade, followed by a week of festivities
capping it off with the family skate at the Wesbilt Centre.
The whole community gets involved and the Shriners
have become an integral part of these festivities within
our community. Each year the
attendance seems to be increasing.
Our Clowns, Nobles and Dazzle
were kept busy with face painting
balloons assisted by our wife’s Sue
Schierer and Carolyn Terpstra,
who fielded questions regarding
the Shrine programs. Once again
we ended up with 3 families
who not being aware of our bus
program, now can phone our 1-800
number and have a tremendous
burden taken from their families
with our assistance. It is satisfying
to sit there as a Clown and have
people walking up and thanking
us for what the Shrine has done
for them. When we work as a
team like that everything comes
together and one realises just how
important each one of us is for the
overall program. We look forward
to another productive year with
our raffle fishing boat sitting in the
Carport awaiting the start of our
sales. People are already asking if
we have the boat draw this year. This boat draw starts
off the year for our fund raising and continues until after
the Shrine Draw for Kids. We are so fortunate with our
newest Noble, Lew Rossner who is working on a project
to have our Logo and Shrine information fixed to the
back of vehicles of several transport companies. The
first one to do this is Vedder Transport, who with their
shiny tanker trucks will have our large decal and phone
number on the back of their units. They travel all over
the province picking up milk. Advertising like that is
invaluable. Our hats go off to Noble Rossner for thinking
outside of the box. This is so important for our continued
success. As it becomes harder to raise funds we have to
be innovative and try new approaches, the status quo
just doesn’t work anymore, and any Noble who thinks
that, “we have never done this
so why change”, has lost touch
with reality. Things do change
and we have to flow along
with those changes. Besides
how satisfying and rewarding
can it be when things work
out, when we worked outside
the box? Also to top it off we
have fun doing it. The rewards
are there, increased ridership
on our buses, new Shrine
Patients and families being
assisted with the purchase of
medical equipment for their
Kids making their lives a little
easier to bear. When we hear
their comments of appreciation
we all feel proud of being part
of this great organisation and
From left to right:
part of making things happen.
We are looking forward to the
upcoming Spring Ceremonial
from which we hope to gain
some future Nobles to assist
us in our cause. So Nobles we
carry on with 2013 hoping we can surpass anything we
did last year. Remembering, everything we do is for the
of the Nile. There are 143 temples across North America and 11
temples across Canada. To date we have given to the Shriner’s
burn injuries, orthopedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip
and palate conditions and rehabilitation of children. In Canada we
have given to the Shriner’s hospital in Montreal over 3 million dollars
to date. Zarah temple in Vancouver has over 624 members to date
and is rated #2 out of the 143 temples across North America. We
have clubs in Penticton, Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops, Cranbrook, Fort
Nelson, Dawson Creek and Terrace/Kitimat and in Abbotsford and
the lower mainland. We make lap robes for the children that travel
on the Shrine buses to the hospitals in Portland and Spokane. Last
year we were able to donate to the Shriner’s over 360 lap robes for
the children. Our goal as Daughters of the Nile is to promote
friendship, character building among women, social interaction and
service to others. These ideals have led to our work for the special
children in the Shriner’s hospitals. To become a member of
Dear Fellow Nobles,
Lady Jan and I would like to invite you to join us and a group of fellow Shriners in discovering the treasures
along Russia’s storied Volga River. We’ll travel aboard a comfortable private river ship, visiting historic cities
and towns — including the revitalized capital city of Moscow and glittering, historic St. Petersburg. We
would be honored if you would come with us for what promises to be a memorable journey
We hope you’ll take part in this exclusive voyage — available for one departure only — during which you’ll
share in the warm camaraderie of fellow Shriners. Traveling aboard the M/S Rossia, we’ll cruise from
Moscow into the heart of Russia. We’ll unpack just once upon boarding, with all meals on the ship included.
Enjoy conversing with new and old friends in the bar and lounge, or watching the riverside scenery unfold
from the panoramic Sun Deck.
Throughout our trip, we’ll be attended to by Grand Circle’s dedicated, English-speaking onboard staff and
gain invaluable knowledge from an expert resident program director. In addition to helping us get to know
our fellow travelers, our program director will give us a candid, insider’s perspective on Russia’s fascinating
history and culture. We’ll enjoy tours of iconic locales like the Kremlin in Moscow and the expansive
Hermitage Art Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as visits to lesser-known gems like Goritsy, Svir Stroi, and
the inspiring open-air museum on Kizhi Island.
Traveling is always exciting, and we’re eager to share this River Cruise experience with you. For more
information on this unique event, contact Grand Circle at 1-800-866-6561 and select option #2 . We hope
that you choose to join us — we’re in for a special treat.
Cash Calendar Comments
On behalf of our Shrine Children your Gizeh Cash Calendar Committee would like to offer a sincere
thank you to all members of the 38 Shrine Clubs, Shrine Units and Concordant Bodies who sold a
total of 4031 cash calendars for 2013. I would personally like to thank the Committee and especially
the Area Coordinators Nobles Norm Baird, Jake Terpstra, and Doug Christie for their excellent work
in distributing and controlling the calendar sales for their respective areas. Also, I would like to offer
my special thanks to Noble Don Denney for his exemplary work in managing the database and the
finances. This project has survived a considerable economic and financial upheaval and also some
stiff cash calendar competition. It is a credit to the resilience of our wonderful philanthropy and the
dedication of our Gizeh Nobles, who have not lost sight of why we are Shriners, the support of our
Shrine Children. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
We have included the 2013 Club Sales / Winners Summary for your perusal.
Your Committee are in the process of preparing the application for the licence from BC Gaming and
Enforcement Branch for the 2014 cash calendars. Chief Rabban, Noble Bruce Barker has been requested
to present a theme for these calendars and also to recommend a children’s organization or school to
partake in a competition to have the children’s paintings included in the calendar. We are printing 4,500
calendars again for 2014 and due to certain parameters set by the BC Gaming and Enforcement Branch,
we really need to sell all the calendars, or any future licence applications may be placed in jeopardy. I
know we will be up to the challenge.
On a related note, after 3 years as Area Coordinator for the BC Interior and North, Noble Jake
Terpstra is unable to continue. On behalf of the Cash Calendar Committee I would like to sincerely
thank Jake for his excellent work. For the 2014 Campaign, we are looking for a replacement for Jake.
Please contact Noble Colin Craig, Tel: 250-738-0464, e-mail: goodison95@shaw.ca to discuss the duties
and responsibilities if you are interested in taking on this important task.
