Potentates Message…
It is that time of the year when the Gizeh Shriners of B.C. & Yukon prepare for
another transition. I have enjoyed the years leading up to being the Potentate
of Gizeh Shrine Centre and with the assistance of many members who have
served on the various Board of Directors during the last five years; it has been
a fantastic experience.
In 2008 when I came on the Divan, I set my priorities to achieve two goals.
The first goal was to promote better communication between Gizeh Shrine
Centre and the nobility. It took some time to accomplish this goal, but I strongly
believe it is the right of all members who pay their annual dues, to know what
is happening at their Shrine Centre.
My second goal was to increase membership. At the beginning of this
year a new Membership Committee was formed with representation spread
throughout the Province and the Yukon Territory. This has resulted in an
increase of new members for Gizeh which, if we maintain the direction set out
for that Committee, it should be beneficial to our Shrine Centre for years to
come.
This year, with the help of many Shriners and their Ladies, we held a very
successful combined Pacific Northwest Shrine Association and Gizeh Spring
Ceremonial in the City of Nanaimo. Another success was the Stated Meeting
and Cold Sands held in West Kelowna. The participation of the Clubs and Units,
the attendance for both surpassed all expectations. The recent Fall Ceremonial
began with the annual cheque presentation which surpassed the $1.6 million
mark. The Ladies “Victorian Tea” luncheon was a sensation culminating in the
ladies having tea poured by royalty, Queen Isabelle Wilson Miriam Temple #2.
Saturday afternoon 12 new nobles were fezzed followed by the “Fire and Ice”
banquet. Although the piper and the Potentate had a difficult time downing
the scotch for the traditional toast to the piper everyone enjoyed an evening of
delicious food, wonderful music and dancing.
There are many new items on the agenda for the ensuing year and I am
confident they will be a plus for our Shrine Centre. The Board of Directors will
be taking more responsibility for the financial income and I look forward to the
outcome of these new projects.
At our last Stated Meeting on November 8th, our
Oriental Guide Steve Whiteside presented a new
Strategic Plan to better organize our finances and
fund raising. I believe this plan will be in effect
early in 2013 and should make a significant
change to the way we do business at Gizeh.
In closing, thank you for allowing me the
privilege and honour of serving you as your
Potentate of Gizeh Shriners of BC and Yukon
for the year 2012.
May you continue to “Get on Fire for
Shriners” for many years.

Okanagan Update

The older we get the faster the time seems to go.
Nothing is more true than this last Shrine year here in
the Okanagan. As many of our Nobles have taken wings
and flown south, there are always some of us crusty ones
that stay behind to holding down the fort. So much has
been accomplished this
past year from our Boat
Sales, Shrine Draw for
Kids, Cash Calendars,
the building of our
float, Parades, beating
the bushes for new
Shriners and providing
our KIDS families with
up to date information.
So here we are at the
beginning of a new
season our Elections
are complete and now
we can sit down and
plan the upcoming
year, and as nothing
stands still we all have
to adapt to the constant
changes leaving the old
behind and accepting
the new challenges.
Things that have worked for ages have all become subject
to the continual changes within our organization.
We are very encouraged with the initiative from our
Divan with the strategic plan. At last there seems to
be a light at the end of the tunnel. Changes that will
allow some of us old timers, to pass on to the younger
members the tools to forge ahead. Now is the time to
assist our Divan and let our voices be heard and assist
them in making things happen.
Here in the Okanagan we are hoping to draw in some
of our younger brothers out of the Lodges with the Spring
Ceremonial in 2013, at the same time realizing that those
younger members will have new fresh ideas which will
form our future. We have been blessed this past year by
drawing in some Nobles right away started working
for our KIDS rather than sit on the sidelines to see how
things worked. Two of our Nobles took on the selling of
our Cash Calendars with staggering results of over 75
Calendars each. To top it off there are some things in the
works, which when they come to fruition, we will all be
extremely proud
of.

Janizaries Jottings

Gizeh Janizaries Marching Unit.
Merry Christmas from the Janizaries. Since our last
report the Unit completed the summer parade season
by marching in the Sidney Day Parade on July 1st,
and the Duncan Parade on July 14th. The after parade
refreshments provided by the Sidney and Cowichan
Valley Shrine Clubs were greatly appreciated as
always.
We were actively involved in selling tickets for the car
draw and were pleased to support Noble Cliff Johnson
in good numbers when he was installed as Worshipful
Master of Malahat lodge #107 on September 15th, 2012.
On September 24th, 2012 Nobles Al Christie, Cliff
Johnson, Doug McColl, John Reibin, Bob Russell, Simon
Sheppard and their ladies as well as special ladies
Elizabeth Hopper and Marnie Carson were pleased to
join Illustrious Sir John Le Gros and Lady Lynda on their
Eastern Seaboard Cruise from New York City to Quebec
City. It was a great time and thankfully we missed the
disaster that hit New York later in October.
October 19th, 2012 saw the gala dinner and celebration
for the Janizaries 50th Anniversary. The evening
was held at McMorrons Beach House Restaurant on
beautiful Cordova Bay. Master of Ceremonies Noble
Fred Leak and President Noble Al Christie welcomed
the 107 people attending. We were honoured to have
the Potentate, Illustrious Sir John Le Gros and Lady
Lynda as well as the Chief Rabban R. Glenn Allen and
Lady Laura attending. In addition, Lady Shirley Smith
and several Past Potentates and their ladies joined us. A
highlight of the evening was to have our two remaining
Charter Members and their ladies in attendance, Nobles
Keith Lightbody and Ken Davies. All in all a terrific
evening much enjoyed by all. The Janizaries now look
forward to their 100th Anniversary in 2062.
On November 19th, 2012 the Unit held its 4th Quarter
General Meeting and Election of Officers. Noble Len
Walsh was elected as President and we know that
the Unit will be in good hands under his leadership.
Several Janizaries were pleased to participate in the
Fall Ceremonial where we joined with the Patrol for the
Honour Guards and Black Camel Ceremony.
On November 25th and 29th we provided the Honour
Guard for Santa Claus and his entourage when they
arrived at 2 malls in the Victoria area. This involved
escorting him from his arrival point to his office in the
centre of the mall where he started receiving children.
These are always fun activities and some Shrine
musicians joined us to provide festive music.
The Janizaries will commence drilling on January
22nd, 2013 and we are always looking for a “few good
men” to join us. We muster at the HMCS Naden Drill
Hall at 7.15PM Tuesday evenings and have been known
to enjoy a short social meeting at the Legion afterwards.
Please join us and become part of the “wonderful world
of the Janizaries”.

POTENTATE’S APPOINTMENTS
For the information of uninformed members of the Nobility, when a Potentate’s term of office expires, all appointments made
by him during his term of office also cease, according to the Imperial Code.
Some uniformed Nobles have mistakenly believed or assumed their appointments to be permanent. NOT SO! Each Potentate,
when installed in office, must make his own appointments of six (6) officers of the Appointed Divan – 1st and 2nd Ceremonial
Masters, Director, Marshall, Captain of the Guard and Outer Guard, in addition he may make “Potentate’s Appointments.”
The Potentate has the power and authority under Imperial Shrine law to replace every appointee or he may, if he believes it to
be in the best interest of the Temple, retain all appointees by re-appointment.
Many Nobles of demonstrated ability are continued in office or appointment by re-appointment, but this is at the will of the
incoming Potentate.
Courtesy requires that a Noble holding office, position or assignment tender his resignation to the incoming Potentate. If it is
the will and pleasure of the incoming Potentate that the Noble is to continue in office or position by re-appointment, he will be
so notified by the Potentate to that effect.
Should any Noble not holding appointment by the current Potentate wear a Fez carrying any title such as “Aide” or any other
designation, he does so in violation of the Code.
Some Nobles seek to perpetuate an appointment fictitiously by adding to the lettering on the Fez of the year or years of
appointment. This is in violation of Imperial Law.

Election Of Officers
The Imperial Law Reads:
Section 325.9 - Representatives
(a) Single Ballot. Where a temple elects more than
one Representative, all candidates must be
balloted for one written ballot.
(b) Complete Ballot. Each member voting must
vote only for the total number of representatives
to be elected, otherwise his ballot cannot be
counted as a vote.
(c) Majority Vote. A majority vote of those
present and voting is necessary to elect each
Representative.
(d) Election. Only those candidates who receive a
majority vote shall be declared elected.
(e) Successive Ballots. Successive written ballots
must then be taken in the same manner on other
candidates until all Representatives are elected.
(f) Highest Vote. If more candidates receives a
majority vote than the number of Representatives
to be elected, then those receiving the greatest
number of votes shall be declared elected.
(g) Void Ballot. Blank ballots are not votes.
Section 325.11 - Election Regulations
(a) Electioneering. A candidate for an elected
office in a Shrine Temple may print, publish and
circulate during the year he is seeking the elected
office, a resume consisting of his educational
background, his vocational history, and his
Masonic and Shrine record. Except as provided
in the prior sentence, the printing, publication,
circulating or distribution of resolutions, letters,
telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a
unit, club, Noble, or group of Nobles, suggesting,
recommending, opposing, or containing the
names of proposed candidates for office in the
temple is prohibited.
(b) Expenditures Prohibited. The expenditure
of money for gifts, favors, or entertainment
on behalf of a candidate for elected office is
prohibited.
(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the
Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending
Noble, and he may declare the election of the
officers void and order a new election.
(d) Notice. At least one week prior to the annual
meeting or any election, the temple Recorder
shall mail to each member, a notice thereof
containing this section.
Profile of an Oriental Guide
When the annual meeting takes place in January
2011, Nobles will be called upon to determine who
will be chosen Oriental Guide to begin the long
move through the Divan to the highest post within
the Temple.
When the members of the Shrine Temple elect
a Noble to the office of Oriental Guide, they are
virtually starting that Noble through the Divan
line on the assumption that he will prove qualified
for any merit advancement to the high office of
Illustrious Potentate.
Hence it is quite evident that the nominations for
Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough
and accurate evaluation of character, ability and
interest.
A Noble can be a fellow, a hard worker and a loyal
Shriner… and yet lack the basic qualifications,
which make a good Potentate. Unless a Noble
is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to
himself and to this Temple in seeking the office
or in permitting his fellow Nobles to support and
promote his candidacy.
The normal starting point of Shrine leadership is the
office of Oriental Guide. The following checklist may
prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for
the Office of Oriental Guide. However, no thinking
man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to
believe that any one Noble could possibly embody
all of the virtues, talents and qualifications which are
set forth in this check list – for eventual evaluation
of potential candidates by the voting members.
• Leadership
• Executive ability
• Business sense
• Community standing and influence
• Financially secure
• Energy and vitality
• Free to devote ample time
• Capable of building good public relations
• Good habits and moral character
• Interest in Shrinedom
• Ability to give and get cooperation
So, let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all-important
matter of electing to office only men who are
eminently qualified for the job.

Tenor Drummer Dennis Cooper
Dennis was born in Leader Saskatchewan which is
350 kilometres east of Calgary. In 1940 Dennis and his
family moved to Calgary. His father opened a radio
shop with living accommodations in the back. Dennis
ran a bowling alley nearby. He met his wife Marguerite
who had moved from Vancouver to Calgary to work for
a large construction company. They were married in
September 1959 and moved to the coast the same year.
Dennis and Marguerite have two daughters - Linda and
Denise who are both registered nurses and also have
bragging rights to four grand children.
Career
Dennis joined the City of Burnaby in February 1960 as
a rod man on a survey crew. He went on to be a rod man
supervisor with 32 rod men reporting to him. He then
moved to supervising a machine shop that maintained
trailers, compressors and pumps, He has since retired
and he and Marguerite now live in Walnut Grove.
Freemasonry
Dennis was initiated on April 4 and passed on
October 29, 1963 and raised by the RCMP degree team
on February 17, 1964 in Burnaby lodge number 150. He
was also a member of Van Zor Grotto from 1967 to 1974
and is a member of Scottish Rite.
Dennis father Roland Edward Cooper was a member
of Renfrew Lodge No. 134 in Calgary and was also a
York Rite Freemason.
Shrine
Dennis joined Gizeh Shriners and immediately joined
the Drum and Bugle Corps. He has served as secretary for
many years and was made a life member in September
2006. Dennis plays a tenor drum in the band.
A tenor drum is a marching percussion instrument that
has a pitch that lies between a bass and snare drum. It
is similar in size to a field snare, but without snares
and is played with soft mallets or hard sticks. Tenor
drums provide more colour
to the music. These drums
are played near the edge of
the head, like timpani. This
allows for the optimum
resonance and fundamental
tone of the drum to project.

Potentate’s Communiqué – December 2012
I would like to preface this communiqué by first
thanking the two Shriners representing the Shriners
of BC & Yukon on this committee who worked towards
the opening of a Shriners Clinic in the British Columbia
Childrens Hospital. Our representatives were Past
Potentate Ill. Sir James Druchet and our Recorder Noble
James Harrison.
It is now agreed in principle to establish a Clinic in
partnership and conjunction with British Columbia
Children Hospital. The purpose is to assess Shrine
patients who are in need of treatment and refer them
to one of our Shriner Hospitals or alternatively those
who could receive treatment in BCCH and as well, assess
post surgery patients who have been transitioned from
another Shriners Hospital.
All Shriners patients from BC & Yukon will be assessed
by an accredited Shriner Medical Physician/Surgeon.
He will decide, based on his assessment of the patient’s
condition, what treatment/surgery is best for the patient
and refer that patient to BCCH, Shriners Hospital for
Children-Montreal, Portland or Spokane in particular,
or any other Shriners Hospital facility that can give the
prescribed care. It is emphasized, that any treatment
being provided must be within a, “reasonable period
of time in accordance with the National Standards
Committee of Canadian Orthopaedic Association”
who recommends, “no patient should be asked to
wait longer than six months after mutual patient/
surgeon decision is made to operate”.
The Shriners Satellite Clinic located at BCCH would be
under the Administrative Direction of Shriners Hospital
for Children-Canada and operating in conjunction and
partnering with the BCCH.
It is intended the Shriners Satellite clinic would function
on the First and Third Friday of each month of the year
and share the Outpatient Orthopaedic Clinic located at
BCCH.
It was agreed that the Shriners Satellite Clinic in
conjunction with BCCHG will have a Memorandum of
Agreement.
The last committee meeting was most pro-active and
successful in that the partnership between Shriners
Hospitals and BCCH is a positive move toward providing
a high quality of care to children who are in need
of medical attention that can be offered beyond all
expectations and with true satisfaction.
In closing, I wish to thank the Directors of Administration
and Chief of Staffs of the Shriners Hospitals for Children-
Canada and the British Columbia Children Hospital
for their fortitude and willingness to work together in
bringing this major undertaking to reality.

George Burton
April 14, 1920 – October 10, 2012
Father, Uncle, Poet,
Soldier, Policeman,
Shriner
For those of us who have been in Gizeh for many years,
we will remember Nobles George as our Poet Laureate.
He wrote his first poem while serving in North Africa.
This poem appeared in a book called “No Dishonorable
Name”. In 1994 he published a book called “Poetic Diary”
This book detailed in anecdotal and poetic form
many events, highlights, and personal experiences of
his 30 years in the Vancouver Police Department. The
proceeds from this book were donated to the Pageantry
Unit of the Daughters of the Nile in memory of his wife
Eleanor.
Words and thoughts came naturally to George. He
would compose a poem immediately after an event.
He wrote many poems about Shrine events which were
published in the Gazette and eulogies about many Nobles
and their Ladies. His Eulogies from 1995 to 2088,
of which there were 82, gives us a brief glimpse into the
history of Gizeh since the lives and activities of many
distinguished Nobles were highlighted.
Noble George was born on April 14, 1920 in Blackburn,
Lancashire, a cotton mill town in England. He was
the youngest of 4 brothers. In 1940, he joined the Coldstream
Guards and then joined the Guards Commandos
who then became the 3rd Battalion of the Coldstream
Guards serving in North Africa. He was demobilized
in 1946. After serving about a year with the Blackburn
Police Department, he immigrated to Canada where
he eventually joined the Vancouver Police Department
in 1948. Noble George was one of the first members
of the Vancouver Police Motorcycle Drill Team which
was formed in 1954. He served on the Vancouver Police
Force from 1948 – 1981.
Noble George became a Shriner and joined the Patrol
in 1972. He was Captain of the Patrol from 1980 to 1986.
He was totally committed to the Patrol and Gizeh ensuring
that we were disciplined and smart in Drill competitions
and parades. After serving many years as secretary
of the Patrol, Noble George became Parade Marshal
and eventually Director of Uniform Units. Noble George
was a proud Shriner and served Gizeh with distinction.
Noble George was predeceased by his first wife (Eleanor)
and daughter (Susan). He is lovingly remembered
by his daughter (Lisa) and four grandchildren.
