How to write a Resume that will not get tossed out of the pile!
Adapted from David Silverman’s article in the Harvard Business Review Blog
( June 5, 2009)
We all know that there are more jobs being
lost than created, and that each opening will get
dozens, if not hundreds, of applicants. In our
fear to avoid saying anything that might get our
résumé tossed out of the pile, we end up saying
nothing at all. The best you can do is try to achieve
the maximum content with minimum peculiarity.
Here’s a list of nine things to make your résumé
stand a better chance of survival:
Get the formatting right
Line up bullet points, dates and headings.
Uneven spacing will get you questioned about
skills that have nothing to do with what you
can do on the job. Learn to always put dates
flushed against the right margin.
Insert dates for everything
If you have got a gap, explain it in your cover
letter. But do not leave the dates off a job or a
degree. Maybe you are worried they will think
you are too old or too young — but at best you
will look sloppy.
Fill up on the buzzwords
Yes, buzzwords are typically “bad” for clarity, but
you have to get past the HR department first, and
they are screening for matches with the words in
the job description.
Choose verbs that mean something
“Assisted,” “Worked on,” “Contributed to” and so
on don’t convey much to a prospective employer.
Instead, say what you did: “Wrote,” “Designed,”
or “Managed.” The more specific, the better.
Rewrite your résumé for each job application
If you really want a job, your prospective
employer is not going to be impressed by your
inability to adjust one 3-page document to meet
their needs. Highlight the top 3 to 7 things you
have done that match up with the requirements
of the job.
The further into your past, the less detail you
should have
Do not have 13 bullets on a job from 10 years
ago.
Keep it short
A five-page résumé may be justified, but you
have got to make it clear through headings and
organization why you need so much space. If
you have got a list of publications or industry
conferences you have spoken at, great, but put
it at the end as a separate section.
No typos
Your résumé is like the restroom in a restaurant,
the one room everyone sees. If you cannot keep
that clean, what is it like in the kitchen?
Entrepreneurial
Intelligence
Should You Be An Entrepreneur?
Adapted from Daniel Isenberg’s article on the Harvard Business Review blog
(February 12, 2010)
There are strong internal drivers that compel
people to create their own business. Daniel
Isenberg developed a 2–minute Entrepreneur
Test (below) to help you find out. Just answer
yes or no. Be honest with yourself.
1. I don’t like being told what to do by
people
2. I like challenging myself.
3. I like to win.
4. I like being my own boss.
5. I always look for new and better
ways to do things.
6. I like to question conventional
wisdom.
7. I like to get people together in order
to get things done.
8. People get excited by my ideas.
9. I am rarely satisfied or complacent.
10. I can’t sit still.
11. I can usually work my way out of a
difficult situation.
12. I would rather fail at my own thing
than succeed at someone else’s.
13. Whenever there is a problem, I am
ready to jump right in.
14. I think old dogs can learn and even
invent new tricks.
15. Members of my family run their
own businesses.
16. I have friends who run their own
businesses.
17. I worked after school and during
vacations when I was growing up.
18. I get an adrenaline rush from selling
things.
19. I am exhilarated by achieving results.
20. I could have written a better test
than Isenberg!
If you answered “yes” on 17 or more of these
questions, look at your paycheck. If the company
that issued the check is not owned by you, it is
time for some soul searching and for you to start
thinking about what kind of business you want
to set up. It does not matter what age you are.
Talk to people who have made the plunge, learn
how to plan and deliver a product or service,
think about that small business you might buy,
talk to people with whom you would like to
work, and talk to customers.
Pastor Wale’s Column
Living Life On
Purpose
‘Living Life On Purpose’ is a book that was written by
Pastor Wale Akinsiku and first published in 2003.
In the next few editions of L.I.F.E. magazine, we will
feature the book in its entirety. Enjoy!
It is my desire in these series to help you achieve among other things
the following:
1. To enable you to discover that you are worth more than you
think.
2. To help you understand why it is impossible for you to fail
3. To enable you to say in the words of William
Booth - founder of The Salvation Army “I have found my destiny”
There is big difference between information and revelation.
To help you appreciate this, take a look at the story of
the Ethiopian Eunuch in Acts 8:27-38. This man was
diligent in the reading of the scroll of Isaiah, he had a
lot of information but he could not receive the gift of
salvation from God though it was readily available.
After Philip explained the scriptures to him he got
a revelation of the scripture and subsequently he
received salvation and was baptized the same day.
From the above story we can deduce that when you
do not have an understanding of the information
available to you, you will not be able to partake of the
intended benefits.
Hence, understanding is what transforms information into
revelation and when you act on revelation of the scriptures
you are guaranteed results.
Get ready as we explore some principles over the next few months, I
trust God to grant you understanding and as you act on the revelation,
you will hold tangible proof in your hands of God’s goodness.
Understanding
is what
transforms
information into
revelation
Let us start by looking at the life of Jeremiah. Jeremiah, one of the
prophets of the Old Testament had a very interesting life that is worth
studying diligently.
The first chapter of the book of Jeremiah gives a great insight into his
person and mission in life. I have been intrigued by his life for quite a
while and as I began studying the topic – LIVING LIFE ON PURPOSE,
I was drawn to the remarkable account of the start of his mission and
his response to the discovery of his mission.
Principles are timeless and universal; the principles learnt from the life
of Jeremiah can be applied to our own lives in this present generation.
Regardless of your present status in life, I believe these
principles will be of great benefit to you in taking you to a
higher level of fulfillment and achievement.
I trust the Holy Spirit to accomplish His Will in you
as we embark on this journey.
The first part of this series is for you to understand
that You Are on a Mission. As mentioned earlier,
we will be taking principles from the life of
Jeremiah. The first lesson that we will be looking at
next month is that ‘Your Mission Existed before Your
Birth’. Understand that God told Jeremiah that before
he was formed in the womb he had been appointed as
a prophet. In other words his mission on earth had been
determined before he was born. This is a profound truth
that requires our understanding.
Stay tuned to the March edition of L.I.F.E. for more insight
into ‘Living Life On Purpose’
Divine Inspirations
renew your mind and expect God to do exactly what His Word says.
Preparation: You have to prepare yourself to receive what God wants
to do. Joshua told the Israelites “Sanctify yourselves” i.e. to dedicate, to
prepare, to be made clean and holy. If you really want a job, you will not
just sit at home hoping someone will call you and offer you a job. You will
search the classified job listings, talk to people with similar job skills, send
out your resume and be fully prepared awaiting the wonders of God. If
you are in financial crisis and drowning in debt you will attempt to reduce
your spending, increase your income and let God do the miraculous. “I
have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase”.
God Of Wonders!
We are serving a God of wonders! His wonders are countless. He is
glorious in holiness, fearful in praises and always doing wonders. God
is full of wonders and miracles. He delights to show His power to His
people. God is a God of the miraculous, who loves to answer the prayers
of His people with great signs and wonders. Psalm 77:14 says “You are
God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples”.
Our God is an awesome God!
Are you ready for the wonders?
In Joshua 3:1-5, we find Joshua setting the precedence for experiencing
the wonders God had prepared for Israel. We need to apply Joshua’s
principles today for us to experience the wonders of God. These principles
include but are not limited to the following:
Pray and have faith: Your prayer room is the birthing room for the
heaven-sent, hell-shaking and life-changing experience of God’s wonders.
Prayer produces power and power produces the demonstration of the
Spirit of God. Prayer is vital to the life of a born-again Christian.
Most Christians cannot pray effectively because they lack the faith to
believe that God can perform miracles or do wonders. If we strongly
believe that God cares and He will help us, we will begin to pray
and live with greater confidence. It is impossible to experience His
wonders if we are not praying and do not have the faith.
Pursue intimacy with God: If you want to experience the wonders
of God you must be close to God, letting God touch your heart
and learning to touch the heart of God. It means listening to the
promptings of the Spirit of God and obeying them. There is much
wonder, joy and pleasure available to the one who will pursue God
and become intimate with Him. To be intimate with God, we must
expose everything about us to God – our hopes, dreams, fears and
our sins. The more we open our heart to God in prayer, the more He
will begin to open His heart to us (Psalm 25:14). We also need to
meditate on the Word of God. If His Word is planted in your heart,
you will be able to call on the Word to produce wonders in your life.
Perspective: Joshua told the Israelites in Joshua 3:3 to change their
position when they see the Ark of the Covenant and go after it. This
means that you need to change the way you think. Go after God,
Peace with your past: The pain of your past will sour your present. Paul
never forgot he was the worst sinner, yet he believed that God’s forgiveness
could change his dark past to a bright future. Saul the murderer became
Paul the great missionary. Holding on to your past prevents you from
experiencing the wonders of the present.
Praise and worship: Wonders occur through praise and worship.
Praise is one reason why we were created (Isaiah 43:21). It is our highest
calling. Praise makes the devil flee and releases the anointing of God.
When we pray we should begin with praise and end with praise. Also,
when we worship God, His presence comes right into our midst and the
supernatural occurs. He is the God of wonders (Isaiah 8:18). The ‘Lord
of Hosts’ is God’s battle name. When we worship Him, He goes to battle
with signs and wonders on our behalf. Anyone who wants the Lord of
Hosts to fight for them must first learn to worship Him for who He is
Joshua proclaims “the Lord will do wonders among you”. It is not MAY
DO – GOD WILL DO!
House of Praise introduces
Deaconess Ronke Demola-Taiwo
Pastor @ Home
At House of Praise champions are numerous and failures are never
found and your destiny matters to the leaders. The leadership at House
of Praise is committed to the welfare and progress of each individual in
the congregation. This passion for people led to the creation of ‘Pastor
@ Home’. Pastor Wale and Pastor Tope will be personally visiting
members of the congregation to get to know them on a more intimate
level. Individuals or couples will be chosen randomly by the church
office and notified ahead of time that they will be hosting Pastor and
his wife for a few hours on a specific Sunday evening. No elaborate
preparations are required and the people present should be immediate
family members of the selected congregant or couple. Any arrangement
for refreshments should be limited to a dish of fried plantain with a
cold can of Coca-Cola for Pastor Wale and water for Pastor Tope.
The primary goal of their visit is to fellowship with the individual or
couple and to leave them with a lasting blessing.
Balanced Living–Women’s Forum
e
It is a new day, it is a new dawn, it is
a wonderful time to be in the House
of Praise (HOP), 2011 promises to be a
glorious year!
There is something new in the air…a new
beginning is definitely an incident we
cannot ignore.
To every great beginning lies a past. As we
enter into this New Year, let us take a look
at some highlights of great teachings and
encouragement for the women of all ages
in 2010.
We started off the year with a powerful
poem reminding every woman of all race,
shape, size and background, that she was
phenomenal.
We also looked at the characteristics of the
woman described in Proverbs 31:10-31 and
identified that she was a perfect example
of living a balanced life as a career woman.
Despite the busyness of today’s world, a
balanced life is vital! We have to create time
for our families, children, friends and most
of all our spouses.
Whether single, married or divorced, all of
us have that God-given gift of motherhood
embedded in us. Our reaching out to people
in different ways and at different times
makes us great mothers.
In the final half of the year, we embarked
on a three-part series of wearing the right
New Beginnings, new Perspectives, new Achievements!
clothes for our shape. We embraced our
body shapes and dressed with class.
Harvest time came and we learned that we
reap what we sow and that the right seed
and watering process is vital. In addition
to having the right seeds to sow, we need
great soil - that is a good lifestyle, we need
water - patience, a good attitude and an
unquestionable character. Most importantly
we need to weed - pray.
As women we were encouraged to be open
and transparent, especially with our spouses,
in the area of money. Having a hidden
stash that your spouse has no idea of was
discouraged. Genesis 2:25 explains that the
first God-ordained marriage of Adam and
Eve had transparency, “they were naked and
not ashamed.”
No matter our success as women, we should
not forget that we are meant to be a helper
of man. As we climb the ladder of great
achievements, we should remember the
people that guide and support us, such as
our families, friends, mentors and ministers.
We ended the year with the understanding
that we need to know who we really
are in order to have genuine fulfilling
relationships. When asked “Who are you?”,
often times we are quick to respond with a
name. However, we were taught that self–
identification (to become a better you) was
the first step in making progress to a Goddestined
life.
So you ask, “where do we go from here?” the
answer is “we continue to rise up”.
In 2011 look out for topics related to
women of all ages under this new section
of Balanced Living…
• A new ministry targeting the young
“The Girl with a Mess or a Message”
has resonated with the young female
adults of HOP. We will be building
on this with “The Super Girl” and “The
Profile of Mr. Right” - a talk show
coming up soon…Watch out!!!
• For the newlyweds (0- 6yrs) there is
“BLISS” - a new ministry that will help
put bliss into your marriage and also
answer some of the questions you still
have after the wedding day. This will
also be a forum to help understand the
how-to of a beautiful marriage.
• Also for all women in the house
there will be a Prayer and Worship
Retreat to energize and empower us
for the year ahead.
This year is going to be a year filled with
excitement of what God can do with a
group of God loving people.
God Bless
Real Estate Today
The
As part of the real estate series, on Friday January
21, 2011, Jeff Reitzel spoke at House of Praise on
his principles of achieving financial independence
through real estate investment.
His Dad, Jim
Reitzel spoke as well
WHEN HE WAS 14 years old, Jeff Reitzel was not a very good
student. His father was a teacher so he was not going to gain
any inheritance. He was working at Wendys making $5/hour. He knew
that he wanted to be financially independent so he spent a lot of time
reading about finance and working hard at Wendys. He noticed that
none of his friends had jobs and somehow got by so he decided to invest
every penny of the $800 he made every month in mutual funds. After
the first year, his portfolio gained 10% and he had $11,000 in the bank.
Receive A
Million
At these rates of return, at 15, he calculated that he would be 54 before
he would be financially independent ($10 million for him).
Then he stumbled upon the idea of leverage. If he borrowed and invested
$130,000, his monthly fees would be $800 and he would make $14 million
by his 54th birthday. The natural evolution of his thought process was
to find a vehicle where he would borrow the money and have somebody
else make the monthly payments for him.
Real Estate was it! He could buy a piece of real estate, put a percentage
down and somebody else would make the payments most of the time.
What other asset can you buy in the world that somebody else would
pay for? And what do they want in return? A decent place to live and a
great landlord! That’s a great deal!
In 2002, at the age of 24, Jeff Reitzel bought his first property. Today, he
is financially independent, a renowned speaker and a best-selling author.
Most important to him, he is a husband, an active community supporter
and a millionaire father.
His book, The Millionaire Father, is dedicated to “those who have a passion
for their work, yet dream of someday achieving financial independence.
Those who want the biggest life possible and are actively seeking out
ways to achieve that vision. Those who want to go as far as possible with
as few roadblocks as possible and who want to say at the end of the day
that “I’m glad I did rather than I wish I had.”
MILLIONAIRE
FATHER
8 INVESTMENT Myths
ad, Jim
as well
Do you fit that description? Do you dream of achieving financial
independence and are you actively seeking out ways to achieve that vision?
If so, the big question is Why?
Financial wealth or independence is defined as the unearned income to
finance your life mission. Unearned income refers to money that you did
not trade your time for. You can only get so far trading time for money
because your time is limited. In order to achieve financial independence,
you must have a clearly defined life mission. What is your purpose for
investing? What does that money mean to you?
There are 4 stages in real-estate investing. You must first think like a
millionaire, then purchase a million dollars worth of real estate. Eventually,
you will own a million dollars worth of real estate and finally receive a
million dollars a year in passive income from your investments. Does this
seem impossible? Jeff told us of a friend of his who makes one million
dollars every Friday in passive income! You do not yet know what is
possible because you have not started investing. It is important to set a
goal for your investments. How much would you like to make every year
from your investments?
In order to achieve your goals, you must overcome the 8 myths about
investing.
The first step in becoming a millionaire investor is to change your thinking.
Wake up every morning looking for an opportunity to invest. Let people
know that you are a real estate investor and before you know it, opportunities
will begin to knock at your door.
The most important property you will buy is always the next one! Go out
and possess the land God has placed in our hands!
❝
33% of Canadians rent.
Somebody has to provide the
inventory for them to rent from.
Might as well be you
www.houseofpraise.ca
- Jim Reitzel
❞
1. I don’t need to be an investor, my job will take care of my
financial wealth.
1-2% of people can obtain financial wealth from their income
(actors, athletes). Otherwise, your job will not create wealth.
2. I don’t need or want to be financially wealthy, I am happy
with what I have.
This comment is very selfish. If you are able to obtain wealth
and you are not, you are only thinking about yourself. Money
is good for the good it can do. If you have enough money, good
for you, get some more and help others
3. It doesn’t matter if I want it or need it, I just can’t do it.
The truth is you don’t know what you can or can’t do until you
try.
4. Investing is complicated.
Investing is only as complicated as you make it. Do you truly
understand the mutual funds and RSPs you are invested in?
It isn’t complicated if you understand the products that you
are invested in. Investing in real estate is a process not an event.
5. The best investments require knowledge most people don’t
have.
Your best investments will always be in areas you can or already
understand. Real estate is really not very complicated and you
can easily learn it.
6. Investing is risky, I will lose my money.
Investing by definition is not risky. Speculating is risky.
7. Successful investors are able to time the market.
In successful investing, the timing finds you. In other words,
timing is about being reactive to opportunities. Somebody woke
up yesterday and found an opportunity because they have woken
up for many days as an investor.
8. All the good investments are taken.
Every market has opportunities for good investments
Legal Corner
I Found My Ideal Home ... What Next?
Denise Odetoyinbo
an agreement is not legally enforceable (in most circumstances). Once
the conditions are met, your lawyer will then search the title to ensure
that there are no liens, encumbrances (such as existing mortgages) or
other title problems.
Your lawyer will “quarterback” the transaction for you and ensure that
your deal and all supporting closing documentation are prepared and
delivered in a timely fashion. You will meet with him/her usually a week
before closing (or earlier if circumstances warrant) to review all of the
closing documents and deliver the closing funds.
Once you have settled on the residential property you want to buy,
but prior to the agreement becoming firm and binding, contact
a lawyer licensed to practice real estate law in your province as soon as
possible. Do so before signing the Agreement of Purchase and Sale.
Once signed, an Agreement of Purchase and Sale is a formal contract
and you must ensure that your understanding is completely expressed
in the Agreement. Verbal agreements, representations or promises are
not worth anything. Get it in writing!
When buying a home, your lawyer will help you negotiate the Agreement
of Purchase and Sale. It is essential that conditions relating to financing,
home inspection, lawyer’s approval and if the property is a condominium,
approval of the condominium status certificate are included. A waiver
must be signed as evidence that the conditions have either been complied
with or waived; otherwise the Agreement becomes null and void.
Your lawyer will ensure that any other specific concerns are addressed
in the Agreement of Purchase and Sale, because if it’s not in writing,
The actual registration of the deed (called a “Transfer”) and the mortgage
(called a “Charge”) is done electronically. Your lawyer, who is a licensed
user of the Electronic Land Title Registration System, prepares and
registers your interest in the property electronically. Once the deliveries
have been completed, your lawyer will then access the electronic database
and register the Transfer (and Charge if applicable). The actual registration
is almost instantaneous, and once done, your lawyer will release the keys
to you while the Seller’s lawyer will pay the seller.
Although registration is now electronic and the process itself is virtually
instantaneous, the actual time it takes to close is dependent upon several
factors. First, monies have to be received from your mortgage provider and
banking has to be done on the day of closing. Then the certified closing
funds have to be sent by courier to the seller’s lawyer. Finally both lawyers
have to be available to access their computers to “close” the transaction.
Typical timing for picking up keys to your ideal home at your lawyers
office is mid-afternoon. It could be as late as 5:00 p.m. as this is the time
that the electronic system shuts down, or, if things go very well, as early
as noon. But do not count on your keys to schedule your movers or to
have your appliances delivered, carpets cleaned, etc., until later in the day.
The Art of Prayer
- Kenneth E. Hagin
The chapters in this important handbook on the lost
art of prayer cover such subjects as: praying for your
nation, interceding for the lost, praying for deliverance,
fasting, and praying for those in sin. This book teaches
on supplication and intercession (in its various forms).
Readers are encouraged to use the right type of prayer
for the situation: the prayer of faith, the prayer of
consecration, the prayer of commitment, the prayer
of worship, the prayer of agreement, prayer in the
spirit, united prayer, the prayer of supplication and
intercessory prayer.
How has House of Praise impacted your
life? House of Praise has changed the
way I approach all aspects of my life,
from my spiritual growth to personal
self-development. Pastor Wale, through
the teachings, has really helped me to
gain insight into causes of failures in my
situation. In gaining these insights I have
also been taught and empowered on how to
address them effectively to obtain a positive
change that brings glory to God.
Each time a program is conducted in
House of Praise, a yoke is broken in
my life and changes are evident. The
emphasis on fervent prayer has helped
me to gain back lost ground and has
given me the revelation necessary to keep
moving forward.
What makes you unique? My ability to
Healthy Living
WHEN A LOVED ONE DIES suddenly or a
person experiences failure, it is normal to be sad.
Self-doubt, regret, and depressed feelings may
accompany this. In some individuals, appetite
and sleep are affected and there may be a need
to spend time alone. These are typical responses
to challenging times. These feelings are transient
and usually, one is able to return to normal
functioning in a short time. This is NOT the
case in depression.
Depression is one of the most common mental
health problems affecting about one in twenty
people in North America. The figures may differ
slightly in different countries but this may be
due to how the statistics are collected and other
factors specific to the area.
Depression is diagnosed when the feelings
described above persist for a long period and
cause one to not be able to do things that they
would do normally. In an adult this would
include such things as not going to work,
not participating in family and social life or
engaging in productive activities. In children,
this would cause such things as problems
concentrating in school or hanging out with
friends and significant changes in appetite or
Golden Chicken Vegetable
increased irritability.
Dr. Olabode Akintan, MD FRCPC
What is it and can it be TREATED?
Depression is an illness that affects the body in
a profound way. It affects how the person sees
the world and can even affect bodily functions.
Sometimes it can cause the body to shut down.
Despite the amount of research that has been
done on depression, the single specific cause is
still unknown. A lot however is known about
its effect and it’s course if left untreated. As is
the case in hypertension or stroke there are a
number of factors that increase the risk that an
individual will develop depression.
A family member who has depression or who
may have died from a suicide attempt is a risk
factor. Having a serious medical condition such
as respiratory or gastrointestinal problems or
even a recent heart attack increases the risk.
Major life changing or traumatic events may
also increase an individual’s risk. Although there
are many other risk factors it is important to
note that having a risk factor does not predict
that a person will definitely develop depression.
If you or someone you know has five or more of
any of the following persisting for two weeks or
more, you should contact your doctor or mental
health professional:
• Feeling sad
• Feeling irritable and having low
tolerance for others
• Having problems with sleep
• Feeling tired all the time and
having no energy
• Feeling guilty, worthless or hopeless
• Loss of appetite with associated
weight loss without trying
• Difficulty concentrating at work
or even with minor tasks
Directions:
1. Brown chicken in oil at medium-high heat in skillet.
Remove chicken and set aside.
2. Stir broth, garlic, rosemary, thyme, potatoes and green
beans into skillet. Heat to a boil and cook at a gentle boil
for 5 minutes. Return chicken to skillet and reduce heat
to low.
3. Cover and simmer for about 12 minutes. Sprinkle with
cracked black pepper.
• Not feeling motivated or
excited about things that you
previously enjoyed
• Unexplained body pains and
discomfort
• Feeling like not wanting to go on living
Depression can be successfully treated. If left
untreated it may eventually improve but after
a prolonged period of impairment and loss of
productivity. In some cases however, it can lead
to suicide. An untreated episode of depression
increases the risk of another even worse episode
if untreated and so the benefits of treatment
outweigh the risks.
Medications such as antidepressants have been
shown to be safe and effective treatments for
depression especially when accompanied by
counseling to help build coping skills and
improve distress
tolerance.
There are a
number of
medication
choices and
the choice will
be based on
a number of
factors including
any other health
problems or
circumstances.
Talk to your
doctor about
depression
screening and
treatment
options.
Did you know that violence is an attack of the enemy? I
mean, your instinctive answer would be “yes’’, but when last did you
attribute violence as being an attack of the enemy? When last did
you watch the news, and say “this is the enemy’s work”? So I will ask
you again. Did you know that violence is an attack of the enemy?
Be honest. Violence is and will always be an attack of the enemy.
Do not be fooled by the lies and deceitful exuberance posed by
worldly views, opposite from the word of God. Many people today
have accepted violence to be a thing of the norm. There are certain
aspects of the current society that promotes and celebrates violence.
Many movies contain violence and the last decade alone can be
described as being one of the worst in terms of violent incidences,
for example, the destruction of the world trade center.
What does the Bible say about violence? Well, in Psalm 11:5 it
states: “The soul of the Lord hates those who love violence.” Clearly,
David gathered an insight into what his heavenly father felt about
this subject. God despises the heart of the evil.
Violence can be attributed to three main things: Evil Company, Lack
of Prayer and Forgetting God. In many ways they are all closely
related and reliant on one another. I will share why each of these
contributes to violence and in a future edition of L.I.F.E. magazine
I will discuss further insights about types of violence to be aware of.
Evil Company
I am sure we have all heard the famous adage from 1 Corinthians
15:33, “Be not deceived, evil company corrupts good habit” That is
entirely true. If you repeatedly surround yourself with individuals
of ‘evil deeds’, you will undoubtedly develop their bad habits. The
psalmist again offered wise words to those who need inspiration
in Psalm 17:4 - “I have kept myself from the ways of the Violent.”
David simply meant that he did not surround himself with evil-doers.
Lack of Prayer
We have been encouraged, as citizens of the Kingdom of God, to pray.
Why? Because the less we pray, the easier it is for the devil to find
his way back into our lives, through deceitful lies and most especially
worldly pleasures. You see, there are some things that common
sense or even book smarts cannot solve. Only prayer can. Because
it is with prayer that you gain more confidence to defeat the devil.
Furthermore, the more prayerful you are, the more your heavenly
father hears you. Philippians 4:6 says: “Be anxious for nothing, but
in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your
requests be made known to God.” Therefore, even a simple prayer to
God, to eliminate all forms of temptation with regard to violence,
will be effective. God hears fervent prayers.
Forgetting God
Forgetting God is not an immediate occurrence, it can be gradual.
Sometimes, it is because one lands that dream job and forgets who
gave it to them. It is not the employer. It is not even your career
counsellor. It is and always will be God - the Alpha and the Omega.
Therefore, to avoid falling prey to violence, do not forget God. When
one forgets God, they have unfortunately become prideful. And
God detests the proud. Psalm 10:4 says: “The wicked in his proud
countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.”
Therefore, the more you forget God, the more He will forget you.
My prayer is that whatever circumstance you may be facing today,
shall be rectified by the cleansing Blood of Jesus Christ, who Himself
faced and conquered all imaginable forms of violence through the
strength graced upon Him by His eternal Father. Amen.
Testimonies
God has done it again
Pastor, sometimes I don’t
even know where to start
my story from and what
to say, but the faithfulness
of God in my life cannot
be described with words.
On Sunday January 16 Pastor Wale said we should write down what
we want God to do for us; so I wrote down 3 things. Then he called the
people that did not have a job forward and prayed for them, he said that
we should go and receive a ‘Yes’ this week. Although I was not actively
looking for another contract I just remembered at that time that a
recruiter called me in December about a contract with the Government
of Ontario that paid about $15 more than I currently receive. I had told
him to put me forward for the job. I accepted an interview date on Friday
January 14th to meet with the client on Wednesday January 19th. So
while Pastor was praying, I keyed into the utterances and spiritually, with
faith, received a ‘Yes’ to my own job.
I met with the client at 3 p.m. on Wednesday January 19 with full
confidence in the prophesy of ‘Yes’ that I received on Sunday and selfassurance
in the faithfulness of God that He is always true to His Words,
I RECEIVED A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION TO MY ‘YES’ AT
2:57 PM THURSDAY JANUARY 20, I GOT AN OFFER.
I think it is important for me to mention that I had drafted this testimony
on Sunday January 16th after coming back from Church knowing, without
a shadow of doubt, in my mind that I would send it in before the end
of the week to testify to the goodness of God again.
God gave me choices, I have a contract renewal that I have not signed
and I now have A NEW THING TO LAUNCH ME TO MY NEW
MONTH - JANUARY 2011.
