Career Corner
Choosing or Changing Career Paths
Adapted from a November 2010 article on helpguide.org
Last month we discovered the importance of
integrating your passion with your career. We
looked at the first two obstacles to changing
careers; it is too much work to change careers
and I am too old to change careers. Here are
the last two obstacles:
I don’t have enough skills to consider a new
career. You may be unaware of the skills you
have or underestimate your marketability due
to low self-esteem. However, you probably have
more skills than you think. Consider skills you’ve
learned not only from your job but from hobbies,
volunteering or other life experiences.
In this economy, I’m lucky to have a job. I
don’t want to rock the boat. In today’s climate,
Entrepreneural
intelligence
it might feel like too much of a risk to consider
changing careers. However, if you’re unhappy
in your current job, doing research on other
options will only benefit you in the long run.
For example, you may discover a career with a
more stable long-term outlook than your current
career. And you don’t have to quit your current
job until you are confident of your new career
path.
So how do you translate your interests into a
new career?
Tip 1: Identify occupations that match your
interests. Many online tools can guide you
through the process of self-discovery. Questions,
quizzes, and temperament sorters can’t tell you
what your perfect career would be, but they
can help you identify what’s important to you
in a career, what you enjoy doing, and where
you excel.
If you have narrowed down some specific jobs
or careers, you can find a wealth of information
online, from description of positions to average
salaries to estimated future growth. This will
also help you figure out the practical priorities:
How stable is the field you are considering?
Are you comfortable with the amount of risk?
Is the salary range acceptable to you? What
about commute distances? Will you have to
relocate for training or a new job? Will the new
job affect your family?
While you can get a lot of information from
research and quizzes, there’s no substitute for
information from someone currently working in
your chosen career. Talking to someone in the
field gives you a real sense of what type of work
you will actually be doing and if it meets your
expectations. What’s more, you will start to build
connections in your new career area, helping you
land a job in the future. Does approaching others
like this seem intimidating? It doesn’t have to
be. Networking and informational interviewing
are important skills that can greatly further your
career.
Look out next month for another tip for
choosing the right career.
Pastor Wale’s Column
wasted by mediocrity, something is awakened in me.
living
Whatever unlocks your passion and anger is what you have been born
to correct.
What gives you great satisfaction?
Whatever gives you the greatest satisfaction is a clue to what your mission
is. I find great satisfaction in helping people achieve their dreams and
fulfill their destiny. The Bible says, “…a desire accomplished is sweet to
the soul…” (Proverbs 13:19).
Are you frustrated on your present job even when you get results? Are
you dissatisfied with your present pursuit?
‘Living Life On Purpose’ is a book that was written by Pastor Wale
Akinsiku and first published in 2003. In the next few editions of L.I.F.E.
magazine, we will feature the book in its entirety. In this edition, we
conclude the first section titled ‘You Are On A Mission’. Enjoy!
In the last edition of L.I.F.E. we looked at the first step in identifying
your mission: what are your gifts? Pastor Wale Akinsiku wrote that
“Everyone is gifted and your gift is what has been destined to open doors
to you”. If you are wondering what your gift is, note that it is the thing
that comes to you naturally and also what you can do almost effortlessly.
In this edition we look at the last four questions that you should ask
yourself to identify your mission. We conclude with how to discover
that mission.
What do you love doing?
This is probably one of the most important questions you will ever have
to answer in life. On first thought, the question sounds simple, but many
people today do things not because they love doing them, but because
they have to do it. Many people don’t enjoy their work, but they have to
go because of the bills they are required to pay.
If you assume money is not a problem, what sort of work would you
enjoy doing without getting paid for it? The answer to that question is
a major pointer to your mission in life.
What unlocks your passion and energy?
Your mission in life is something that will automatically unlock your
passion and energy. What are you passionate about? What unlocks your
natural motivation? Your mission in life is something you will be selfmotivated
for. If you are not self-motivated for what you are presently
doing it is probably not your mission in life.
What situation unlocks your compassion or anger?
Racial segregation unlocked the anger and compassion of Dr. Martin
Luther King, the injustice of slave trade unlocked the compassion of
William Wilberforce and the plight of the poor in London unlocked
the compassion of William Booth. What unlocks your compassion? I
personally have a great distaste for average. When I see potential being
www.houseofpraise.ca
Whatever gives you the greatest satisfaction is a great clue to what you
have been called to do.
How to discover your mission
You must be born-again
As previously discussed, being a born-again Christian is the first step to
discovering your mission in life.
Ask God for guidance
God says ask and it shall be given unto
to you. Nobody knows you like God
does. Ask Him what your mission is
and you are guaranteed an answer.
Be Sincere with yourself
Sincerely ask yourself the above
questions. You have nothing to gain
by pretending, but you have a lot to
gain by being honest with yourself as
you ponder on the questions.
Be a partner with somebody that
has already discovered his or
what sort of
work would
you enjoy
doing without
getting paid
her mission
for it?
This is one of the fastest ways
of discovering your mission. In
the story of the possession of the
promised land by the children of Israel,
Joshua sent out a few spies on a mission. They got to the house of a lady
called Rahab, who had been living a life of confusion and frustration.
She joined hands with them on their mission and eventually discovered
that her own mission in life was to give birth to Boaz (the great grandfather
of King David). She was destined to be part of the family tree
of the Messiah- Jesus Christ. What a great honor and privilege for her.
( Joshua 2; Matthew 1:5).
When you partner with somebody who has already discovered his or her
mission in life and is pursuing it, you are a step away from discovering
your own mission. The Bible declares that “...He that walks with wise
men shall be wise...” (Proverbs 13:20).
Inspirations
Encouraging Bible
Verses
Below you will find several Bible verses
that you can refer to for encouragement,
inspiration, and comfort during difficult
times. Of course, if you know someone
who needs to be encouraged, it would be
a good idea to share these Bible verses
with them, as there is much comfort in
meditating on God’s sure promises. May
you be encouraged.
Encouraging Bible Verses on Prayer:
“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and
it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives; and
he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened.” –
Matthew 7:7-8
“For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: you shall weep no
more: he will be very gracious unto you at the voice of your cry; when
he shall hear it, he will answer you.” – Isaiah 30:19
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any
thing according to his will, he hears us: And if we know that he hear
us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we
desired of him.” – 1 John 5:14-15
“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call
upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him:
he also will hear their cry, and will save them.” – Psalms 145:18-19
From the Pulpit: Quotes from Pastor Wale Akinsiku
“Any Christian message that does not leave you with a personal responsibility
is not the full gospel”
“Christian commitment is like the contribution of the pig to the typical
English breakfast – it is irreversible”
“Your job as a parent is to train up your child in the way they ‘should’ go
not in the way ‘you’ want them to go. Don’t live your life through others!”
“The Law of Recognition- Anything you do not believe you should have,
you would not recognize when it comes”
“Whenever you leave your ‘Eden’ you will find it difficult to eat!”
“Respect your body if you do not want people to prematurely pay you
their last respects”
“Whatever is too big for your mouth (whatever you cannot say) is too big
to enter your life!”
Encouraging Bible Verses on the Future:
“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” –
John 14:18
“The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge
in times of trouble. And they that know your name will
put their trust in you: for you, LORD, have not forsaken
them that seek you.” – Psalms 9:9-10
“And we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according
to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
“And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first
heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was
no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem,
coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride
adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of
heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men,
and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people,
and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and
there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying,
neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things
are passed away.” – Revelation 21:1-4
Legal
Loans, Laws, Wills and more
Small Business loans
Your business is doing well but you want to take it to the next level.
You approach your friendly bank manager for a business loan and after
a review of your application he agrees to give your company the loan
on the condition that you sign a personal guaranty. This is a promise
made by the entrepreneur (you) to personally repay the company debt
in the event of default by the business.
You see banks are inherently conservative. They understand that
recovering loans from a new business may be challenging. But a human
agent is different. Your guaranty allows them a belt and braces approach
to risk minimization.
The only safe thing is NOT to guaranty any loan you do not want
to be responsible for.
Criminal Law:
Your rights if arrested:
A knock on your door from her Majesty’s finest. An “invitation” for
a “chat at the Police station”. Recognize that this is NOT a call from
your buddy. Any statement you make to a police officer can and will
be used in evidence against you in court if you are charged with an
offence. If you are arrested, this is no time for trying to convince your
“captor” that you are the wrong person. The only safe option is to save
your explanation for when you see a judge.
You may be worried the police officer will be upset if you refuse
to talk to them, don’t be. In Canada, just because you refuse to talk
until you have spoken to your lawyer does not mean you are guilty of
anything. Once you connect with a lawyer, they will advise you to find
a big padlock, apply it to your lips, then throw away the key. Don’t
worry about finding the key, every defence lawyer has a master key to
unlocking your lips.
So what do you do when faced with this scenario? I have three
simple rules:
Rule number one - keep quiet.
Rule number two is even simpler - Do not forget rule number one.
Rule number three - If perchance you forget rules number one and
two, I hope you can find a sympathetic defence lawyer who will drill
into you the importance of rules one and two.
Insurance Law:
Offence is the best form of defence. As you acquire assets, you also
www.houseofpraise.ca
acquire an invisible bull’s eye. Consider asset preservation and business
continuity strategies such as purchasing appropriate insurance policies.
Policies for overseas medical coverage, disability, business continuity
insurance, critical illness, life, home, automobile coverage etc. They can
protect you. Remember an insurance contract requires both the policy
buyer and insurance company to act honestly towards each other and
to not mislead or withhold critical information from one another. It’s a
contract of utmost good faith. Selective recollection of important facts
when you are getting coverage usually ends in a denial at the point of
trying to make a claim.
Contract Law:
Here is one that will definitely come back to bite you if not handled
properly. We enter into contracts every single day. Most contracts are
verbal. Some sealed with a handshake. Personally, I prefer to ink our
thinking.
In order to be valid, a contract requires an offer, acceptance and
consideration. The parties themselves must be capable of contracting
and must have the intention to create legal relations.
Unless a party can prove that at the time he was not of full mental
capacity, a judge will likely interpret the contract in the manner it was
obviously intended. So next time you want to buy a business, hire a
contractor, sell, buy or lease an asset etc., ink that thinking or expect
anything to happen.
Where there is a WILL there is a way:
What happens if a person does not make a will? In Ontario, that
person’s estate will be distributed according to Ontario’s intestate
succession law. Without a will, the government dictates what happens
to your hard earned money. Not your wife. Not your children. The
government decides.
Like taxes, passing on to the greater beyond cannot be avoided. It
happens to 100% of us. Why not “take care of business” when one has a
chance? Creating a will (even a will kit from Staples) is better than no
will at all. It ensures that those “interesting people” who come around
after you have departed and harass your family will have no legal force
behind them. A well crafted will ensures that your true beneficiaries
receive the product of your years of labour.
Write that will today!
Real Estate Today!
Learn Before You Leap
Source: Thehouseteam.ca
Owning your own home is an exciting
proposition. But before you can know
whether homeownership is right for you it is
important to understand what is involved.
The worst mistake you can make as a new
homeowner is to buy a house that ends up
over-extending you financially. The key is to
make sure that you can comfortably afford the
mortgage payment and other monthly expenses
that come with homeownership.
How much can you afford?
The first thing you need to do is figure out your
net worth. Your net worth is the amount left
over once you’ve subtracted your total debts
from your total assets. This can work as a guide
to show you how much you can afford as a
down payment.
Prepare a budget
Detail all of your current monthly expenses and
debt payments. Be as accurate as possible. Add
everything up and then subtract this amount
from your monthly take home amount. This will
then give you a clear idea of how much you can
truly afford for a mortgage payment each month.
Monthly mortgage payments
Just like when you rent, as a new homeowner,
you will have a monthly payment to make
on your mortgage. The size of your mortgage
payments will depend on your down payment,
the amortization period (25, 30 or 35 years), the
term (fixed rate, variable rate) and your payment
schedule (bi-weekly, bi-weekly
accelerated or monthly) .
The down payment
In order to buy a home, the
first thing you will need is
a down payment. The more
money you put down, the less
interest you will pay over the
life of your mortgage. The
minimum mortgage down
payment amount that is
typically required in Canada
is 5%.
In order to put less than
20% down, mortgage
default insurance is required.
Mortgage insurance premiums are paid once, but
can be added to the principle of the mortgage.
How much can you afford?
Before you start looking at homes, visit your
lender for a pre-approved mortgage. The lender
will look at your finances and determine the
amount of mortgage they are willing to give
you. The maximum amount you can qualify for
depends on a number of factors but the most
important are your household income, your
down payment and the mortgage interest rate.
Remember your budget
Quite often you will qualify for more than you
expected. This is where preparing your budget
beforehand is so important. Remember, your
goal is to not over-extend yourself financially.
Let your budget be your guide in determining
how much of a mortgage to take on.
You now know how much you have to spend, but
not all of it can go towards the purchase price of
your new home. Some of it will have to be used
to cover costs associated with buying a home.
Upfront Costs
Things to remember:
• Deposit: up to 5% of the purchase price,
made when you make an offer to purchase.
• Down Payment: 20% of the purchase price
is required for a conventional mortgage.
• Home Inspection Fee: generally $500.
• Prepaid Property Taxes and or Utility Bills:
to reimburse the vendor for prepaid costs
such as property taxes, filling the oil tank etc.
• Property Insurance: covers the cost of
replacing your home and its contents. Property
insurance must be in place on closing day.
• Survey or Certificate of Location Cost:
$1,000 to $2,000 range.
• Legal Fees and Disbursements: Must be
paid upon closing. Minimum of $500.
• Land Registration Fees: a percentage of the
property’s purchase price. Check with your
lawyer/notary to find out the current rates.
• Property Appraisal Fee: between $250 and
$350.
• Moving Expenses.
• Additional items.
Other Costs
• Appliances
• Service connection fees: Charges for
utilities, telephone, gas, electricity, cable TV,
satellite TV, internet etc.
• Renovations or repairs
• Window treatments
• Decorating materials
• Snow-clearing equipment
• Gardening equipment
• Dehumidifier
Condo Costs
If purchasing a condominium, there will be
some fees in addition to the ones mentioned
above.
They are:
• Estoppels Certificate Fee: up to $100
• Initial payment of the monthly
condominium fees
Sources for your downpayment
First-time homebuyers have a variety of options
for funding their down payment:
1. Accumulated Savings
2. Money gifted from immediate family
3. Money from your RRSP
Using Your RRSP for Your Down Payment:
With the Home Buyers Plan provided by the
Canadian government, you can withdraw up
to $25,000 from your Registered Retirement
Savings Plan (RRSP) and use the money for a
down payment.
Healthy Living
Menopause is the discontinuation of a woman’s natural menstrual
cycle, consequently ending her reproductive years. Symptoms
result from decreased blood level of circulating female hormones and
they include:
• Hot flashes - episodic heat waves and excessive sweating
• Changes in the length and heaviness of the monthly period
• Mood swings, irritability; the woman is often described as being
short tempered
• Decreased libido or sexual drive
• Difficulty sleeping
• Vaginal dryness that can make sexual intercourse uncomfortable
and often painful
It is important to mention that not
all these symptoms are experienced by
all menopausal women.
Menopause comes in two forms
depending on the age of onset: natural
menopause and premature menopause.
Natural Menopause occurs at age 51
for the average Canadian woman,
however it can happen at any age
after 40. Age at menopause is often
genetically determined. It is a result of
the normal aging process and follows
three stages, namely, perimenopause,
menopause, and postmenopause.
Perimenopause starts about seven
years before menopause. At this stage,
symptoms are apparent and there is
a reduction or complete absence of
the female sex hormones called estrogen and progesterone.
True menopause is the stage of complete absence of the
menstrual period for a year. The ovaries are not releasing any
eggs, therefore, there is no estrogen production. At the final
stage, postmenopause, symptoms, such as hot flashes and sleep
disturbances have greatly subsided.
The second form of menopause, premature menopause, occurs
before the age of 40 and is caused mainly by premature ovarian
failure and induced menopause. Premature ovarian failure occurs
when the ovaries of a woman younger than 40 stops releasing
eggs triggering a change in estrogen and progesterone levels.
Induced menopause can occur as a result of a medical
procedure that removes or damages the ovaries. For example,
the treatment of ovarian cancer with complete removal of the
ovaries called an Oophorectomy or use of therapeutic radiation
around the groin area and chemotherapy for any cancers at all.
Diagnosis of menopause is based on history, physical
examination, including a PAP test during which the vaginal
wall mucosa thickness is examined. A simple blood test for
level of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is confirmatory.
Menopause is a normal process of aging. However, its effects
can be weakened or removed through replacement of the female
sex hormones (Hormone Replacement Therapy - HRT) and
lifestyle changes. For women who are not able to take HRT, there are
specific medications to target particular symptoms. Not every woman is
a good candidate for HRT, risks and benefits have to be discussed with
their healthcare professional.
There is an increased incidence of osteoporosis and heart disease
after menopause. Choosing foods rich in calcium, Vitamin D and
Phytoestrogens, have been found to be beneficial. Phytoestrogens have
effects similar to estrogens and they can be found in tofu, soy containing
foods, soy milk, crushed or ground flaxseed and yams. Evening primrosea
supplement available over the counter is also helpful for some woman.
Remember menopause is a natural and expected part of a woman’s
development. You can reduce your risk of long-term problems and
eliminate some of the symptoms by taking the following steps:
• Control your blood pressure, cholesterol, and other risk factors for
heart disease
• Do NOT smoke. Cigarette use can cause early menopause
• Eat a low-fat diet
• Get regular exercise. Resistance exercises help strengthen your bones
and improve your balance
• If you show early signs of bone loss or have a strong family history
of osteoporosis, talk to your doctor about medications that can help
stop further weakening
• Limit alcohol and caffeine intake
• Take calcium and vitamin D
Menopause is the transition period in a women’s life and it is helpful
if women are able to learn what to expect and what options are available
to assist in this transition – speak to your health care professional for
more information.
THIS IS OUR WORLD
This is our world. Deafening gun shots ring through the streets while a dictator stubbornly
clings to power – this is our world.
A detested enemy of the past yet a certain friend of the future, war is quickly declared
despite talks of peace – this is our world.
One might be tempted to say – “no, not here; we are at peace.” Pause for a moment to listen
to the knock at the door – it is the knock of perpetually rising oil prices accompanied by
unwanted guests of fear and frustration. As if this was not sufficiently disturbing, spinning
winds of over 200 miles per hour tear through homes and hearts alike, leaving behind
an overwhelming after taste of loss and pain. To add to these unforgiving circumstances,
we may also wonder why oceans would rise up like army skyscrapers marching forward
and clearing everything in their path – lives, cars, buildings, any and all that can be
imagined. This is our world.
As an added bonus, there is a race between personal income and expenses where the battle
seems fixed due to factors outside our control – sudden yet prolonged unemployment,
unplanned medical bills, education loans, family obligations, an undying mortgage, a
struggling economy and don’t forget those gas prices. If this is our world, is there an
escape? In the midst of certain chaos, is there a guarantee of peace? Is there a stamp of
all-rounded success? Yes, there is a way that is tested and true – Jesus Christ is that way.
Isaiah 40:3 (NKJV) says, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of
the LORD; Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
Young Champions
God - our faith depositor
Oreoluwa Oyelade (13 years old)
God has many names but have you ever seen him as a spiritual
banker in your life? If not, then you have missed one of God’s
names - faith depositor. He gives us faith when we need it! Just as
we ask Him for wisdom to pass an exam, we also ask for help in
times of need, for jobs when we face unemployment and for healing
when we are sick, so too we need to ask for faith to receive miracles.
Here are some reasons why I call Him our faith depositor:
• He supplies courage when you’re afraid
• He is a God of love
• He helps us through challenges
• He is always there for you
• He will provide you with what you need when you need it
• He is a God of endless supplies
• He can never fail
• He will always be there for you
God has always been in the business of supplying faith just as a
bank is in the business of providing money. If you deposit cash, it
means you have money in the bank, therefore, when you deposit
faith, it means you have more power. What do you do with the faith
you withdraw? You use it to experience God’s miracles.
How is your faith account? If you always obey God and love
God you have a high score in the faith bank. However, if you don’t
listen to God you have a low score. You must know that you can
improve your score by listening to God. When God wants to give
you a miracle, you must withdraw some faith from your account
and apply it toward solving your problem. To build up your faith,
trust in God and His Word for your life.
I wish - Joy Edem (17 years old)
Sometimes I wish I were a picture
Why?
Because a picture remains the same
a picture never changes
a picture never forgets
a picture captures the past
a picture speaks of the future
a picture seizes a moment in time
and a picture reflects on it.
But who am I?
I’m constantly changing
I never remain the same
I have trouble remembering
I often forget
I don’t know my future
The past is just that, past
I can never say “This moment...” because moments
are only in the past, never in the present
A picture never ages,
A picture always lasts
But I am constantly maturing
I’m aging fast
A picture makes you think
I only make you wonder
A picture touches your heart
a place I’m not allowed to wander
I wish we were a picture,
A picture of you and I.
Bought with Blood
the divine exchange at the cross
By: Derek Prince
At the cross Christ made possible a “divine exchange” for everyone who
believes in him. What is this exchange? At the cross Christ endured all the
evil due you and in turn made available to you all the good due Him.
In this provocative, Scripture-rich book, acclaimed author Derek Prince
explores the nine “divine exchanges” of the atonement. In place of punishment,
wounding, death, poverty, shame and rejection, Christ freely offers forgiveness,
healing, life, abundance, glory and acceptance.
In addition, Prince gives biblical grounding for five areas of deliverance that
Jesus makes available through the cross: deliverance from this present evil
age, from the law, from self, from the flesh and from the world. Because it is
not enough simply to know about the atonement, Prince presents the means
by which you can make it true in your personal experience: repentance, faith
and a relationship with the Holy Spirit. This new edition of a life-changing
book includes a mini-study course at the end of each chapter, perfect for
individual or small group study.
I.A.
I moved to Toronto in 2008 to purse
a second degree at Ryerson University.
It was there that I met someone who
introduced me to House of Praise. The
moment I started coming to this church I
noticed the constant encouragement for getting more education. I felt
that I was fine since I was working on my second degree. However,
I felt that every time Pastor Wale talked about going back to school,
he was looking in my direction and at times directly at me.
In order to satisfy my conscience and to turn off Pastor Wale’s resounding
voice in my head to go back to school, I applied for a Master’s
degree program at the University of Toronto (U of T).This was a very
competitive program; what an average student puts two months of
preparation into I put two hours because I believed I was not going
to be accepted anyways.
Three weeks before I graduated from Ryerson University I got a job
offer with McMaster University with a wonderful annual salary. Two
days after the job offer I received an acceptance letter into the Master’s
program from U of T. I owed almost $15,000 in student loans and
logically to start working was the way to go. In addition, the Master’s
program would cost $20,000. Everyone told me to forget about the
Master’s program and just take the job. The following Sunday Pastor
Wale encouraged us to pursue more schooling and coincidentally told
us that we should never allow anyone to talk us out of it. He told a
personal story about his friend who went for his Master’s (against
the advice of others) and has a wonderful job now. This story made
me decide to give up the current job offer and pursue my Master’s.
Today things have “really, really, really changed” (quoting Pastor Wale
(laugh!)).Before I completed my Master’s this year, I got a big time job
offer with a salary that was almost double the one that I turned down
last year around the same time. The offer comes with comprehensive
benefits and so much more.
If not for Pastor Wale’s story and encouragement plus the grace of
God who put me in this church, I would have settled. In just one year,
my life has changed for the better. I know that God has more in store
for me. I hope that my story encourages someone to not give up or
settle and to know, like Pastor Wale says, “Where you are in life today
is not the best that you can do”.
God bless
