HOOK ACTIVITY<br />

HOOK ACTIVITY – How to Take Action<br />

Skill – Students will be able to identify appropriate ways to protest/petition regarding changes they seek.<br />

Materials Needed: Chart Paper, Markers<br />

Procedure:<br />

1. Break students into small groups.<br />

2. Each group will choose a recorder.<br />

3. Students will brainstorm ways to appropriately protest/petition one of the following scenarios.<br />

4. Each group will list protest/petition ideas on chart paper.<br />

5. They will put a + / - next to teach idea that would be protected by the First Amendment.<br />

6. Each group will share their ideas with the whole class.<br />

Scenario 1:<br />

The school board is going to mandate:<br />

• All students will wear school uniforms.<br />

• All video games/televisions will be outlawed.<br />

• The school week will be extended; student will attend school on Saturdays.<br />

Scenario 2:<br />

The students want to petition the school board to:<br />

• Improve the school lunches.<br />

• Increase school lunch time.<br />
