DEFILED LAND

There are many references in the Old Testament to defiled land. For millennia, Satan has
staked his claim on planet Earth. He’s marked it with the acts of wicked men. As a
“squatter” (one who settles on land without right, title or payment of rent), the devil
claims ownership of all the souls therein. God clearly tells us how land becomes defiled.
1. Adultery defiles the land. “ . . . You have defiled the land with your prostitution and
wickedness” (Jer. 3:2b). Adultery has defiled the United States of America via movies,
“sexting” (sexual photos sent via cell phone), television, pop music and pornography,
(especially Internet porn). American society, its government and even our churches are
polluted by sexual sins that are detestable to God. (Jer. 3:9; 7:30) Some of those sins are
the reckless perversion and immortality of “Christian” leaders.
2. Shedding innocent blood defiles the land. “Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their
daughters unto devils, and shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their
daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with
blood” (Ps. 106:37-38).
Parts of our nation are built on the bloody massacre sites where whites or Native
Americans were slain; and land that was soaked with the blood of innocent black men
who were lynched without trial.
Shootings in our public schools, workplaces and drive by shootings defile our land. In
Habakkuk 2:12 God says, “Woe to him who builds a town with bloodshed, who establishes
a city by iniquity.” War, rape, gangs, murder, and abuse saturate our cities. America’s
defilement is partly due to the millions of unborn children who are murdered each year by
their own mothers at the hands of abortionists before they take their first breath! (Jer.
7:6-7) God help us!
3. Broken covenants and treaties defile the land. “Then there was a famine in the days of
David three years, year after year; and David inquired of the LORD. And the LORD
answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites” (2 Sam.

21:1). King Saul had disregarded the peace treaty that Israel’s earlier leader Joshua had
made with the Gibeonites and had them killed. (Josh. 9:15) But once King David obeyed
the Lord by offering atonement to the Gibeonites, 2 Samuel 21:14 says, “After that, God
answered prayer on behalf of the land.”
No different than men of old, according to the Grolier Encyclopedia, the United States
government is responsible for making and then breaking more than 389 treaties with the
Native Americans—perhaps more.
4. Idolatry defiles the land. “Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and
hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made . . .” (Ezek. 22:4a KJV). It’s a sad day
for the church in America. We chide the ancient Israelites for having had their household
idols, yet we are no different. Our idols take the form of careers, cars, money, stocks and
bonds, amusement and the works of our own hands. (Ezek. 20:31; 36:18)
Pastor, it’s time for the church to offer prayers that shake the foundations of the land.
Fervent prayers of repentance and petition can actually cleanse the land from its
defilement and enable the people who live on it to respond to the gospel. Genuine revival
will be societal. It won’t be confined within the four walls of the church. (Num. 16:46-48)
Intercessory prayer teams should take to the streets, alleys, roads and the mountaintops
to repent the land. Re deeming the land is the last great job of the church. As we extend
God’s kingdom and declare his glory in the whole earth through prayer walks and praise
marches, God’s blessings will be restored and Satan’s grip on the nations broken. As we
prayer walk our nation, repent for our sins and the sins of our fathers as Nehemiah did
(Neh. 1:6-7); and in unity and purity proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom, Satan’s gates will
collapse. The churches’ gates will be strong and secure. God guarantees it! (Matt. 16:18)
After this, the world’s last great spiritual harvest will occur.
