EXTRAORDINARY CHALLENGES, PREDICTABLE RESPONSE
Mother Nature just didn’t want to cooperate in 2011. Weather was a major challenge for
both staff and volunteers throughout the year, culminating in Tropical Storm Irene, which shut
down the High Peaks and the Adirondak Loj just before Labor Day weekend. In May, heavy rain
and high winds hampered the JBL Fly-In, the annual airlift to bring supplies and materials into
the remote Johns Brook Lodge. Bad weather forced the postponement of the Lake George
Work Weekend twice. But the biggest and most destructive weather event of 2011 was Irene,
which hit the Adirondacks with devastating force in late August. The storm washed out the
Adirondack Loj Road, stranding Loj visitors and staff for several days, and forced DEC to close
the High Peaks Wilderness. The Loj remained closed for nearly two weeks during the prime
September hiking season, resulting in considerable financial losses for the Club.
But despite the weather, ADK volunteers and staff carried on. Within days of storm, staffers
were patrolling the trails, assessing the damage, and helping DEC plan restoration efforts. A few
weeks later, a group of volunteers would not let rain, mud, or chilly temperatures deter them
as they worked to get JBL back into shape. These are just a couple of examples of the steadfast
dedication of the ADK community, whose commitment to the Club’s mission remains unabated
regardless of the obstacles they face. (You’ll find more examples inside this report.) We are
proud of the efforts of ADK volunteers and staff in 2011, but we are not surprised. ADKers are a
hearty bunch of outdoor enthusiasts. A little thing like the weather is not going to stop them.
Sincerely,
Neil F. Woodworth, Executive Director
James Bird, President
ADVOCACY
In 2011, ADK once again proved that a
small advocacy program can have a significant
impact on public policies concerning
natural resources. This was evidenced as
we continued to raise concerns about the
potential environmental impacts of gas drilling
using high-volume hydraulic fracturing,
particularly in state forests and on other
public lands. At ADK’s urging, the Department
of Environmental Conservation (DEC)
agreed to prohibit surface drilling on stateowned
land. ADK also racked up significant
legislative victories, including passage of
a measure that authorizes DEC to regulate
large water withdrawals. (Fracking requires
millions of gallons of water for a single well.)
Governor Cuomo also signed two pieces
of legislation designed to protect Allegany
State Park, which is vulnerable to drilling
because the state does not own the subsurface
rights to all of its 65,000 acres. One law
will allow long-dormant subsurface claims
to revert to the state. The second gives the
Lows Lake
Preservation strong regulatory authority to
protect Allegany State Park from private drilling
activities.
Following deep cuts in environmental
spending, Governor Cuomo and the Legislature
left the Environmental Protection Fund
(EPF) essentially intact. The governor proposed
eliminating the Tug Hill Commission,
but ADK successfully lobbied lawmakers to
restore the agency’s funding.
An ADK lawsuit from several years ago
paid off big time in 2011. ADK had joined a
number of national organizations in challenging
the Bush administration’s cap-andtrade
program for mercury, a program that
left the Adirondacks and Catskills vulnerable
to mercury contamination. In March, more
than two years after our final victory in
federal court, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency proposed the first-ever national
standards for mercury and other toxic air
pollutants from power plants.
Wilderness Legal Defense Fund
2011 saw the establishment of the Wilderness
Legal Defense Fund (WLDF).
The fund was established to enable
ADK to take legal action, if and when
it was deemed necessary, to protect
the wild lands and waters of the
State of New York. Many years in the
making, the Board of Directors voted
unanimously in favor of the Fund. A
$1,000 challenge grant was issued by
an anonymous donor and by the end
of 2011, ADK had raised $10,000. Our
deepest thanks goes to James Covey
and the Niagara Frontier Chapter for
spearheading this effort, and to all
those who contributed to this Fund.
In August, in response to a lawsuit by
ADK and Protect the Adirondacks!, the state
Supreme Court ruled that the bed and waters
of Lows Lake are Wilderness. Justice Michael
C. Lynch ruled that the Adirondack Park
Agency (APA) erred in 2009 when it left the
popular canoe route unclassified. He also
affirmed that the lake had been included in
a 1987 Wilderness classification. The ruling
confirms that state-owned lakes and ponds
in the Adirondacks are part of the Forest
Preserve and must be managed accordingly.
FIELD PROGRAMS
Supervised Volunteer Trails Program
In February, the Supervised Volunteer
Trails Program traveled to St. John in the
U.S. Virgin Islands. For one week, twenty
volunteers worked on the Johnny Horn Trail
in the Virgin Islands National Park, creating
waterbars, widening drainage ditches, and
re-grading 75 feet of eroded trail.
In late April, ADK hosted a Road Scholar
(formerly Elderhostel) trail maintenance service
project at the Loj. The Road Scholar crew
spent the week completing maintenance on
Heart Lake ski trails and mountain bike trails
in the Wilmington Wild Forest. National Trails
Day, held June 4 in the southwestern Adirondacks,
was a success with over sixty volunteers
attending. The High School/Teen Trail
Crew, led by two capable ADK crew leaders,
concentrated most of its efforts in the Johns
Brook Valley in the High Peaks Wilderness
and the West Canada Lakes Wilderness.
The Supervised Volunteer Trails Program’s
regular season ended in August, but
a few additional projects were completed in
September and October. In September, the
Canadian group Randonée returned to the
Adirondacks to build three pedestrian bridges
in the Wilmington Wild Forest. In October,
the annual Fall Trails Day (FTD) event was
held in spite of cold temperatures and heavy
rain, with a record 140 people participating.
All told, over 320 volunteers participated in
trail projects led by the Supervised Volunteer
Trails Program in 2011.

ADK’s 2011 Professional Trail Crew
2011 Summit Stewards (L-R) Devon Reynolds, Gina Edwards, Zack Bell, Sam Brooks, Libby Nichols,
Julia Goren, Coordinator
Professional Trail Crew
The ADK Professional Trail Crew had
a long and lucrative season in 2011. Over
twenty-one weeks, the sixteen-member Pro
Crew earned over $250,000 from a trail contract
with the Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC). The Pro Crew worked in
DEC Regions 5 and 6 in the Adirondacks and
Regions 3 and 4 in the Catskills. In Region
5, the crew worked primarily on trails in the
High Peaks Wilderness. Notable projects in
the High Peaks included replacing footbridges
on the Opalescent Trail and at the flume on
the Northville-Placid Trail near Wanika Falls.
In Region 6, the Pro Crew worked in the Five
Ponds and Ha-de-ron-dah Wilderness Areas
and the Cranberry Lake and Horseshoe Lake
Wild Forests.
The Pro Crew
spent fourteen
weeks in the
Catskills building
new trails and
repairing old favorites.
In Region 3,
the crew repaired
the footbridge
Chubb River flume bridge on NPT
(Photo: Jim Mandle)
over the Neversink River in the Slide Mountain
Wilderness by adding 1,800 cubic feet of
stone to one of the abutments. In the Shandaken
Wild Forest, the Pro Crew constructed
close to 3 miles of multi-use trail. In Region
4, the Pro Crew continued to add trail and
structures to a new multi-use trail network
in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest near Windham.
And it would not be a complete season if the
Pro Crew did not spend time repairing the
popular Kaaterskill Falls Trail.
The Pro Crew completed its regular
season on August 16, but a fall crew worked
in Region 7 through October to complete
the DEC trail contract amendment. That crew
installed rock steps and a scree rock barrier at
the end of the popular trail leading to Tinker
Falls in the Labrador Hollow Unique Area
south of Syracuse.
Adirondack High Peaks
Summit Steward Program
The 22nd season of the Summit Steward
Program was a busy one. Winter and spring
were filled with projects; sunny weather in
June, July, and August brought record numbers
of hikers to the summits; and Tropical
Storm Irene brought dramatic changes to the
High Peaks.
ADKhighpeaks Foundation check presentation at Cascade Trailhead
Thanks to a grant from the ADKhighpeaks
Foundation, we were able to hire an
additional steward, which allowed us to
provide weekend coverage on Cascade from
mid-June through August. During that time,
we spoke to over 4,100 people in 30 days of
coverage on Cascade.
In 2010, we expanded the steward training
to include a two-day Leave No Trace®
course. In 2011, we added training in identifying
alpine bryophytes (mosses, liverworts,
etc.), graciously provided by Jerry Jenkins and
Sue Williams of the Wildlife Conservation Society
and the White Creek School. Stewards also
were trained in Wilderness First Aid through
Wilderness Medical Associates.
Thanks in part to the increased staff, we
were able to complete some important projects
on Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, Iroquois,
and Gothics. Signs were replaced on Cascade,
Skylight, Marcy, and Gothics. Typically, most
of our project work is accomplished in the fall,
but Tropical Storm Irene disrupted our plans.
In the immediate aftermath, Summit Steward
Coordinator Julia Goren and Summit Steward
Zack Bell assisted the DEC by scouting trails
to help assess storm damage. A subsequent
assessment of alpine areas showed they had
weathered the storm just fine.
Public outreach continued to be an
important part of the Summit Steward Program
in 2011, both on and off the peaks. We
conducted a number of outreach programs,
including programs at the ADK Genesee
Valley Chapter, the Alpine Club of Canada’s
new members’ weekend, The Wild Center,
the Adirondack Nature Conservancy’s annual
meeting, the Johns Brook Lodge, and the
High Peaks Information Center. On the peaks,
the summit stewards made contact with
19,211 hikers.
In terms of research, 2011 was a very productive
year. We continued our participation
in regional efforts such as Mountain Watch,
assisted researchers,
re-photographed all
fifty of our photopoints,
and continued
work on the photographic
analysis
project funded by
the Northern States
Research Cooperative.
EDUCATION
Marie L. Haberl School
Outreach Program
Snow was abundant in winter 2011, and
every fourth-grade class in the winter portion
of the “Three Seasons at Heart Lake” Program
got a chance to try out snowshoeing.
“Three Seasons at Heart Lake” participants
In the spring, we saw several additions
to our school programming, including
snowshoe and Leave No Trace® programs for
sixth graders from Hawthorne Valley Waldorf
School, a “Hike Safe” presentation for Arongen
Elementary School, a spring exploration
hike for Keeseville Elementary School first
graders, and a program on safe and responsible
hiking for 140 students at Queensbury
Elementary School.
In the fall, Long Lake rejoined “Three
Seasons” after a year off. Sally Vrooman of
the Morristown youth program brought ten
students for a Leave No Trace® and geology
hike up Mt. Jo, led by Environmental Education
Program Manager Thea Moruzzi. And
for a second fall in a row, the Blue Mountain
Lake Museum invited ADK to provide programming
for their kick off to Take a Child
Outside week (for third-grade classes).
In 2011, ADK received more requests
for school programming outside the “Three
Seasons at Heart Lake” program than ever
before, a sign that more and more teachers
are recognizing the value of environmental
and outdoor recreation.
Interpretive Programs and Workshops
In the spring, High Peaks Information
Center staff provided valuable assistance to
the Education Department. Michelle Minnoe
helped with community and school outreach
programs, and Audrey Hyson planned
lectures for HPIC and Johns Brook Lodge.
This cross-training of HPIC staff allowed ADK
to spread its educational message more
effectively to the thousands of day visitors to
the High Peaks while strengthening support
for ADK Education.
ADK’s four Summer Naturalist Interns—
Lauren Richard, Larry Montague, Jamie
Landry, and Dove Henry—did a great job
educating the public, making more than
8,000 contacts during the summer of 2011.
As Mt. Jo summit hosts, they interacted with
more than 5,000 people, and 350 people
participated in Campfire Talks.
Three experienced volunteers put in a
total of 60 hours at the ADK Nature Museum.
This freed staff to complete other projects,
such as the new and improved Heart Lake
Tree Trail, designed and implemented by
Summer Naturalist Intern Larry Montague.
ADK also offered a full slate of outdoor
workshops, including day hikes, backpacking
trips, and skills courses. More than 400
people participated in about 100 courses
and trips. For the first time since 2005, ADK
ran an eight-day Wilderness First Responder
course, which was completely filled.
Outdoor Leadership—Leave No Trace®
Over Memorial Day weekend, Leave No
Trace® Traveling Trainers took up residence
at Heart Lake to conduct an awareness workshop,
lead an evening campfire program,
share Leave No Trace® ethics with hikers at
the Loj trailhead, present an evening lecture
at HPIC, and train incoming ADK seasonal
staff. Leave No Trace® programs in 2011
included a Trainer course for staff in June,
a public Trainer course in July, and Master
Educator courses in August and September.
Outdoor Leadership Coordinator Ryan Doyle
and Environmental Education Program
Manager Thea Moruzzi ran a custom Leave
No Trace® Master Educator course for Adventuresports
Institute at Garrett College in
McHenry, MD.
Leave No Trace® Master Educator course September 2011 participants
at Racquette Falls
“This is a great program! It is a real
paddling trip—not like the wimpy
one at St. Simon Island on the Georgia
coast, which I took in 2004. The itinerary
contained a good variety of basically daylong
paddling trips. Being at the lodge
on the lake added a lot to the trip, just
wonderful. We had a fabulous, fun-loving
group, game for whatever conditions
or challenges faced us. Ryan Doyle is a
terrific leader—he is very knowledgeable,
passionate about the Adirondacks and
preserving our wilderness areas, and a
calm and responsible leader of outdoor
activities. He is able to be flexible and
assert leadership appropriately, as well as
having a genial, friendly, great personality.
Excellent at dealing with different skilllevels
and desires of the various group
members, if they occur. Don’t lose or
change this trip. It is a winner!”
FACILITIES
It was an eventful year for ADK’s North
Country facilities. Once again, ADK’s dedicated
and talented volunteers labored to
make our lodges more attractive and more
comfortable. At the same time, Mother
Nature had a different agenda. Heavy rains
and mud hampered the Johns Brook Lodge
fly-in, while Tropical Storm Irene temporarily
shut down the Adirondak Loj.
The North Country volunteer work
weekends left incredible improvements in
their wake. At Heart Lake, three new canvascabin
tent platforms were constructed. An
improved Loj entranceway was completed
with built-in benches overlooking Heart
Lake and a new wood box, and the walkway
to the beach was rebuilt.
Johns Brook Lodge (JBL) volunteers
made over the two bunk rooms with new
paneling, insulation, and windows. The JBL
fly-in was a challenge as we battled rain,
massive flooding, and deep mud, but we
managed to complete the airlift in two
segments. After nearly a full day of flying on
May 2, operations
were washed out
until May 6, when
the rest of the
materials made it
to JBL.
Tropical Storm
Irene swept
through the North
Country in late
August with devastating
results. Local
homes, businesses,
Top: New sign by Frank Sorbero
Above: Transom windows and new
pine paneling brighten the bunk
rooms at JBL windows at Johns
Brook Lodge
and roads were
demolished. DEC
closed the High
Peaks backcountry,
and the Adirondak
Loj was closed for ten days, including the
Labor Day weekend. Adirondack Loj Road
was washed out at the second bridge, stranding
about thirty guests for four days. ADK
staff, themselves stranded at the Loj, kept our
guests comfortable and well-fed.
ADK was able to get all guests out
of the Johns Brook property before the
storm. Hutmaster Seth Jones and assistant
Brendan Wiltse rode out Irene at JBL and
witnessed the incredible power of nature.
The ADK bridge to Camp Peggy O’Brien
and Camp Grace was washed out, but was
later replaced by the ADK Professional Trail
Crew. ADK’s Member Services Center in
Lake George also lost power and was out of
commission for two days after Irene. Considering
the devastating impacts of Irene
on neighboring areas, ADK facilities came
through with relatively minor damage.
Columbus Day weekend was busy as
usual, but the remaining fall weekends saw
Marcy Dam before (top) and after (above) Tropical Storm Irene.
a downturn as many hikers were uncertain
of road and trail conditions. The fall volunteer
work weekends were certainly needed
after the recent weather events. On the
weekend after Columbus Day, a muddy
group of about twenty-five braved cool
temps and rain to help get the Johns Brook
Lodge back into shape. Heart Lake Property
Work Weekend brought unusually sunny
weather as a group
of about sixty-five
chopped, stained,
built, raked, sawed,
FORESTS and TREES
In the Adirondacks, trees are
always with us, wherever we go.
They clothe the landscape in
green finery; they provide shelter
from the storm and give us shade
during the heat of the day. They
capture our attention and grace
our photographs. In their variety
and combinations trees con tinually
reveal and record changing
forests that integrate the land -
scape and give distinct character
to each mountain as we climb.
It seems appropriate, then, to
pause awhile to make the
acquaintance of these trees and
their combinations that we walk
among, to learn their kinds and
their environments, and to share
their natural history.
Black Fly Affair: A Hikers Ball
MEMBERSHIP
& DEVELOPMENT
ADK ended the year with 16,233 member
households, an increase of 133 households
from 2010. ADK added 2,579 new members
in 2011, over half of which came from two
successful direct mail campaigns. Approximately
25 percent of the member households
possess multi-year memberships,
which raised our overall retention rate for the
year to 85 percent. Membership dues provided
18 percent of the total revenues that
support ADK’s core program areas. Together
with individual donations (and to a lesser degree,
corporate and foundation), $1.3 million
was raised. The trails appeal, student intern
appeal and the year-end appeal all yielded
higher revenues than in previous years.
Early in 2011, ADK’s Board of Directors
approved the creation of the Northville–
Placid Trail Chapter (a.k.a. NP Trail Chapter).
ADK’s 27th chapter will focus on enhancing
and promoting the Northville-Placid Trail
(NPT), which stretches 133 miles through
some of the wildest and most remote parts
of the Adirondacks. The NPT was the first trail
project undertaken by ADK after its founding
in 1922.
A bequest received from the Estate of
John Winkler enabled ADK to fulfill its dream
of a building a new web site. Planning for
the development of the site began late 2011.
The new site promises to deliver greater
functionality and navigational ease, along
with member and chapter portals, site search
capabilities, reservation system and a more
robust e-commerce system.
The Black Fly Affair: A Hikers Ball drew
240 people to the Hiland Park Country Club
in Queensbury on
May 21. Guests ate,
drank, socialized,
danced, and had
a great time. A
new venue for the
event, the Hiland
offered three spacious
rooms for
unhurried browsing
through the silent auction items and a
large ballroom, where the main event took
place. As always, the live auction was spirited
and competitive. The third annual Black Fly
Affair raised nearly $42,000 for ADK’s education
and intern programs.
In response to the trail damage and business
losses resulting from Tropical Storm Irene,
ADK conducted an online auction in November,
raising $5,176 in much needed funds.
Forecasts of thunderstorms and showers
threatened to put a damper on ididaride!
Adirondack Bike Tour, but Sunday, Aug. 14,
turned out to be a beautiful day for a ride
in the heart of Adirondacks. The 2011 ride
attracted cyclists from 14 states, including
California, Florida, and Washington, plus the
Canadian provinces
of Ontario
and Quebec. Participants
ranged
in age from 9 to
6th annual ididariders
79. All told, 326
cyclists (228 men, 98 women) did the ride,
with 287 completing the 75-mile loop and 39
doing the 20-mile option. Thanks to the 33
ADK members, including 18 from the Cold
River Chapter, who provided much of the
volunteer support. Our premier corporate
sponsors, Eastern Mountain Sports, Adirondack
2-Way Radio, Cooperstown Brewing
Company, and Garvey Auto Group collectively
contributed over $10,000 in product
and services. More than $23,000 was raised
for ADK’s Education programs.
ADK held its 11th annual Presidents’
Dinner on October 22 at Michael’s Banquet
House outside Albany. Will Manzer, Chief
Executive Officer of Eastern Mountain Sports
(EMS), was the keynote speaker. The Club’s
most prestigious awards were presented to
recognize “outstanding service and achievement”
in the service of ADK’s mission.
2004 and has led numerous adventure travel
trips, received the Distinguished Volunteer
Award. ADK President James Bird personally
presented the President’s Award to the ADK
advocacy and public affairs staff, including
Director of Government Relations and Conservation
Allison Storellicastro, Public Lands
Advocate Joelle Ingram, Executive Director
Neil Woodworth, and Communications
Director Paul Ertelt.
ADK’s volunteers, leadership, members,
supporters, and staff are our greatest assets.
ADK thanks you for meeting the challenges of
2011 and strengthening ADK’s effectiveness in
achieving our mission. ADK wishes to express
its sincerest gratitude to all the individuals,
ADK chapters, corporations, and foundations
whose support has enabled ADK to achieve its
mission of keeping the “wild” in wilderness.
