2012 Health & Safety Conference Safety Services New Brunswick Featured Keynote Presenter Mark Sherman, Irving Oil Refinery, General Manager Mark Sherman is a resident of Rothesay, New Brunswick. Mark joined Irving Oil in 2008 as the General Manager of the Irving Oil Refinery. Prior to this, Mark worked in Fort McMurray for 25 years with Syncrude, the world’s largest producer of synthetic crude oil from oil sands. While with Syncrude, Mark held several operations positions, including Vice-President of Operations. As General Manager of the Irving Oil Refinery, Mark is responsible for operations and for developing growth opportunities. Irving Oil operates Canada's largest refinery in Saint John, N.B., which has reached production rates in excess of 300,000 barrels per day. The refinery exports over 80 per cent of its production to the U.S., and accounts for 75 per cent of Canada's gasoline exports to the U.S. Mark grew up in Port Hawkesbury, NS and graduated from the Mechanical Engineering program at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Mark also holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics from Mount Allison University. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick. Over the past 25 years Mark has been involved in a variety of community organizations and has served as a minor hockey and baseball coach as well as the District President of the Little League Baseball of Alberta. Mark has a particular interest in addressing workforce demographics and skills shortages in Canada through provincial and national participation. Changing Safety from a Priority to a Value In this keynote address, Mark Sherman will share the success story of the Irving Oil Refinery’s significant improvement in safety performance over the past few years. The refinery achieved a record 0.47 Recordable Injury Frequency (RIF) in 2011, a considerable decrease from its RIF in 2008 of 1.92. The refinery also ended 2011 with 2.4 million workforce hours without a lost time injury. The concept of safety as a core value at the Irving Oil Refinery has lead to a culture shift across all facets of the organization, increasing the accountability of managers and their teams, and ultimately improving their safety performance.
