Brad Proctor and Lucie LaBoissonnière McInnes Cooper A case study using the 2011 Nova Scotia decision in R. v. O'Regan Chevrolet Cadillac Ltd. McInnes Cooper will provide an update on employers' OH&SA obligation to "take every reasonable precaution reasonable in the circumstances" to ensure workers' health and safety at or near the workplace, and the legal consequences for failing to do so. 1:20 pm – 2:10 pm Session 3A Drug and Alcohol Policies in the Workplace Marilyn Wornell J.D. Irving Limited This session will look at some of the key components of a workplace policy on alcohol and other drugs, including some common types of testing, classes of drugs, violations and the disciplinary process. Dr. JoAnne Savoie, L. Psyc. Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation Concussions and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are currently popular topics in the media. This seminar will focus on the definition and symptoms of concussion/mTBI to help understand this condition and the factors that contribute to its increased risk and prolonged recovery. Discover what resources to look for on the Internet when problem solving your health and safety issues. 2:20 pm – 3:10 pm Session 4B Walk to Wellness Andrew Cutler Freedom Fitness You’ve been sitting down in sessions all day, getting up only to snack on foods and eat lunch. It’s time to get your body moving. This is an active participant session. Delegates who attend this section will be asked to take a brisk 25 minute walk around the block (weather permitting – in inclement weather walk will be inside the convention centre). Friday, April 27, 2012 8:45 am – 9:45 am Session 6 Incivility in the Workplace Shelley Parker, NB Power Dr. Marvin Claybourn, St. Thomas University Workplace incivility has been defined as "low-intensity deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm the target. Uncivil behaviors are characteristically rude and discourteous, displaying a lack of regard for others." Incivility is distinct from violence. Examples of workplace incivility include insulting comments, denigration of the target's work, spreading false rumors, social isolation, and bad manners. Incivility is considered to be an ambiguous form of harassment. This presentation will focus on the effects of incivil behaviours on individuals using one of the most prevalent forms of workplace communication, email. The presentation shows the statistical information which supports the fact that operating a motor vehicle or piece of equipment is a person’s greatest risk for serious injury and death both in and out of the workplace. Frequency, Exposure and Severity are reviewed relative to driving. The presentation connects the relationship between individual due diligence, vicarious liability and bill C-45. The focus of the message is to drive as an ART not an ACT. Many case studies are reviewed to support the need for all drivers to assess their own driving ability and to make changes to their driving behavior to lessen the exposure. 11:00 am – 11:50 am Keynote Toward a Healthy Workplace E. Kevin Kelloway, Ph.D. Saint Mary’s University E. Kevin Kelloway is the Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology at Saint Mary’s University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. A native of New Waterford, NS, he is a graduate of Dalhousie (B.Sc. Honours Psychology) and Saint Mary’s (M.Sc. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology) Universities. He received his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from Queen’s University in 1991 and joined the Psychology Department of the University of Guelph, attaining the rank of Full Professor in 1996. In 1999 he joined the Faculty of Commerce at Saint Mary’s University as Professor of Management and Psychology. In 2006 he was appointed as a Senior Research Fellow at the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. Dr. Kelloway was the founding Ph.D. Program Director for the Saint Mary's Faculty of Commerce (2000 – 2003), is the founding, and current, Director of the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety and was a founding principal of the Centre for Leadership Excellence. Toward a healthy workplace More and more organizations are initiating wellness or healthy workplace programs and the data suggest that such programs can lead to both improved health outcomes for individuals and improved organizational outcomes.
