For the purposes of this<br />

research we have used the<br />

following to define <strong>for</strong>mal<br />

childcare:<br />

Any registered childcare (i.e.<br />

not care provided by friends<br />

or relatives) which is required<br />

in order to enable <strong>parents</strong> to<br />

work or to undertake training<br />

leading to work<br />

1. Pre-school <strong>Childcare</strong> (0-5)<br />

• Maternity Nurse<br />

• Childminder<br />

• Day Nursery (mix of large chains and<br />

independents)<br />

• Crèche<br />

• Maintained nursery schools (i.e.<br />

those in public schools)<br />

• Independent nursery schools (i.e.<br />

those in private schools)<br />

• Pre-school (4+)<br />

• Nanny with childcare qualifications<br />

registed with Ofsted<br />

2. School-age <strong>Childcare</strong> (5+)<br />

• Breakfast club<br />

• After-school club<br />

• Holiday playscheme<br />

• Childminder
