BSIA welcomes new section chairmen Following its Annual General Meeting which took place on Wednesday 15th July 2015, the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has elected chairmen and vice chairmen to serve its sections of membership. BSIA is very proud of its membership community, and the great contributions that they make to the private security industry. The development of the private “The security industry is largely due to its members’ dedication to their work and their commitment to progress the sector,” said James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA. “Each section’s chairman dually serves their member company as well as the Association. They must initiate vital discussions to guide their section at quarterly meetings and throughout their term to improve the private security sector on the whole. The work undertaken by section chairmen and vice chairmen creates new possibilities for their sections and broadens the potential scope of the BSIA’s impact.” “Chairmen also represent their section on the Association’s Council, which creates the opportunity for every area of membership to engage and be involved with shaping the future of the Association. I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to all previous section chairmen, and extend a warm welcome to each new chairman who will be taking up their new post.” Phil Wright of Brink’s Ltd was also elected at the Association’s AGM to serve as Vice Chair of the Association. Phil will bring a deep knowledge of the security industry from his experience working in secure logistics in both public and private sectors. BSIA looks ahead to political party conference season This autumn, the BSIA will travel to Manchester and Brighton to meet with various Ministers, Peers and other key stakeholders at both Labour and Conservative party conferences, to discuss the core issues that affect the private security industry. BSIA Chief Executive, James Kelly, will take the opportunity to grill Parliamentarians on the future of the political landscape and where regulation of the industry is heading. This year, the Labour Party meets at the Brighton Centre toward the end of September. At last year’s conference, the party was gearing up for an election which at that point was still all to play for, however following Labour’s routing by the Conservative Party at the election, Labour is now in the process of electing a new Leader. A fortnight before the conference opens the party will hold a special conference to announce its new Leader. Although Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham began the contest as the bookies’ favourite, several developments have changed the polls somewhat with veteran left-winger Jeremy Corbyn now the bookies’ favourite to be elected Leader of the Labour Party. Mr Corbyn has the backing of most major unions and several high-profile MPs but is seen as unelectable by the two former Labour Prime Ministers, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Also running for Leader are Shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, and Shadow Minister for Care & Older People, Liz Kendall. Although both are running admirable campaigns neither is expected to win the Leadership. It will be an exciting few weeks in the run-up to conference to discover which Goliath has won this battle. Shortly after, the Conservatives will meet at the Manchester Central in early October. Last year, the party was preparing for a widely-expected second hung Parliament, however this proved not to be the case come May 7th when the party won a surprising majority. With Labour taking a lot of media attention the Conservatives have had a fairly smooth ride since the election, however once the new Opposition Leader is announced we can expect normal service to resume with the Government facing fierce opposition from the Labour Party. On the agenda for discussion at Conference this year are the five key issues outlined by the BSIA in its manifesto, published prior to the General Election in May: • Commitment to lighter-touch regulation with a transition to business licensing • Continue to minimise ticketing on cash-in-transit vehicles to reduce the risk of attack faced by couriers • Recognise the value of partnership working between police and private security providers • Increase export funding to ensure that the UK remains a global leader in the provision of security solutions • Expand the Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s Code of Practice to include privately-owned systems Following the events, the BSIA will continue to build on the relationships formed during conference season with the various Parliamentarians, to ensure that the private security industry is supported by a wide range of representatives from across the political <strong>spectrum</strong>. It is hoped that the private security industry will soon see movement on licensing or – at the very least – some clarity on the Government’s intentions for regulation.
